3 2 CAMPUS COMMENT Aprl 14, 1949 FROM CRADLE TO GRAVEll Somethng has gone out of the Amercan way of lfe. Somethng drastc has happened to the sprt of ndependence that was an essen~ tal characterstc of the average Amercan. The phlosophy that the government s responsble for the wel~ fare of the people, and quote, "from the cradle to the grave" has become the accepted thng and ths has led to a grasshopper way of lfe as compared to the ndustrous ant way of lfe. There was a tme when chldren were brought up wth the dea that they were respon~ sble for the securty of ther own future and that unless they worked for a lvng they would not get a lvng. As t s workng out, too many people seem to thnk that the varous relef measures and economc securty safeguards were passed so that they could take a pad vaca~ ton as. soon as there are suffcent funds. However, t stll holds true that there s lttle or no satsfacton n lvng unless a person s dong somethng constructve and gvng somethng to the communty. t can be seen by anyone who s the least bt nterested, that the happest person s the busest person, and the busest person s not always the one that s rushng around the most. t all goes back to the dea that f you do for yourself and don't depend on others to do for you, you wll get out of lfe more than you put n. DTTO! The tme of electon s here! New offcers are beng elected n all the clubs and organzatons of the college and on the shoulders of these newly elected offcers wll rest the responsblty of the affars of the college lfe for the comng year., Here n Amerca we are very lucky. We have electons every now and agan durng whch we exercse our rght to vote on who s gong to do the work we do not fnd tme or have the nclnaton to do. Once these fortunate people are elected, we can heave a bg sgh of relef and st back untl the strenuous perod rolls around agan and we have to exercse our prerogatve of the ballot agan. There s nothng lke democracy to make lfe easy. ts many benefts are very much apprecated, and all who have lved under the democratc system wll admt that t s much easer to do t ths way than to have a totaltaran form of government wth someone headng up the government who wll tell us what we have to do and then make us do t. CAMPUS CONfl\1ENT CAMPS OR CAN'T Wouldn't you lke to thnk the thoughts and lve the lfe of Dan Boone (n a modfed fashon, of course)? Well, one of our alumn has done ths - durng summers. He s vvlam Gould Vnal, "Cap'n Bll," of Nature Educaton n the Unversty of lvlassachusetts at Amherst, Massachusetts. Among our numerous promnent gradu~ ates J\tr. Vnal has accomplshed a good job of developng nature study and camp work, and nstructng future teachers n these felds of study. See what he dd durng the summer of 1948 to show what one man who s nterested n camp!1g can do. "Cap'n Bll" orgnally ntended to take a summer off. That ddn't come out as planned. t resulted n seven jobs nstead of one. These were some of the promnent jobs: he drected the Massachusetts Audubon Workshop for two weeks to tran camp nature counselors held at Rvers County Day School; he had twenty students of nature study from Holland, and from Battle Creek, and other ctes; he taught at Boston Unversty Sar~ gent Camp for one week; he entertaned the South Shore Nature Club at Vnehal; and he was apponted honorary charman of the Marshfeld Far Dance Festval.. Asde from these unexpected jobs he was re~elected a member at large of the Natonal Councl of Boy Scouts of Amerca, and had a conference wth Mrs. Martha B. Swassy, of Duke Unversty, who was dong research on chldren's museums and camps. Ths man has done much to further the nterest of students nto the feld of camp counsellng and drectng. f that s what can be done at the Unversty of Massachusetts and at a good many other good colleges and unverstes, why can't t be done here? n New York, Pennsylvana, Maryland, and many other states, camp and outdoors study projects are well on the ad~ vanced way, but Massachusetts, the state of educatonal progress, lacks a good many of these advances. The pty of t s that We do have wonderful potental summer~camp areas wth our beautful lakes, rvers, and hlls and forests, yet we do not' take advantage of them. Even the summer campers of the Unversty of Massachusetts had to go to New Jersey, New Hampshre, and Maryland to be n proxmty wth farly decent camp facltes. Why not have the students stay n Massachusetts? We've got' what s necessary for good camps. t may be that a few state~bult camps for students of colleges where they can drect studes n camp~ ng and develop a well~rounded personalty n leadershp can be erected, or old ones re-opened. They can then fnd ther "summer dongs" to be thorough and practcal experences n dealng wth camps n the communty or n utlzng communty resources. Then they wll realze that f they are to become competent partcpants n the ongong socal prpcesses of lfe, that they cannot master these processes by classroom verbalsm or by text books alone. We need n Massachusetts state~run camps for college~student drectorshp. "Cap'n Bll" Vnal has gven an excellent start toward ths goal.. Now t's the state's turn to take over! r-u-hn-f-_f_u_u-l_-.-fl, OO-NUT SHOP ~ Pastry. j Doughnuts & Coffee l. -nll-._q_ulf_tl._"t_"_nll_h_"~ U-"'-:--"J-"-t-U-UJ'-"U-f'-"~'-al Legan/s Apothecary The Modern Drugstore! The growth and development of leadershp n drectng, vater sports and more extensve out~ door actvtes w be put to an end. Durng ther senor year at Camp Howes the grls are n charge n the classes wheren they teach the sklls offered by the camp. These three weeks n June and the ten days n September gve them a chance to teach classes on ther own n an envronment n whch physcal educaton should be taught. Besdes gvng them many addtonal n!ethods and means of teachng, Camp -lowes gves the grls somethng ntangble, but more necessary. t develops ther personalty and character by gtv~ ng them ndvdualty, self-confdence, and an outdoor lfe. The state owes a camp to the college. Perhaps t s nadvsable to put Camp Howes nto operatng condton agan, but a spot wth a good waterfront and plenty of room s needed. Modern educaton s growng. Shouldn't the st;:;te of Massachusetts educate her future teachers n the most well rounded way possble n order that they may educate the chldren to become the best ctzens of the communty? n tme, ths camp knowledge and beneft should become avalable to all teachers preparng to presde over any group or classroom. Doesn't Brdgewater Teachers College need Camp -lowes? To the Edtor: 3 A K. P. Major \\That s the matter wth some of these so-called mature college men? After many months of watng, savng, and prayng, a few peces of much~ needed furnture arrved for the smok~ ng room. Ths furnture, although t doesn't seem much n the eyes of those who sat back and let ther more ndustrous and school-mnded frends take care of the plannng, fnancng, ajd undertakng, represents the answer to nvocatons to people n authorty. t s these same ndvduals who leave cgarettes on the edge of a char whle they run to ther locker or go for a ' coke." f only these people would thnk of the hardshps nvolved n the procurng of ths furnture whle they are standng on t or draggng t across the floor they would kck themselves and never do t agan. Jm Flanagan and Joe Kudera kept the "brutal tactcs" down to a few scraped knees. (The contest had several tussles thrown n for spce, but these quckly subsded upon the referee's whstle. The stretcher bearers on the sdelnes must have been dsapponted.) The "Rollers" led by Paul Salley and Bob Lemos were aptly supported by the efforts of \Valt Morrson, 'V ally Gleekman, Gene Margozz, zzy Greenberg, and Berne 1\'lller. Caps The "Caps" sprted by Bob Carter's thrteen talles, plus good backng by ]\lal Dllon and \Vll Ford, kept ther opponents n a whrl.
