Gbson's Gallant Grdders Defeat Rck's Renegade Recruts CA:rvlPUS CO~l~ENT Two-hand-touch football clmbed to an all hgh on November la, on lower campus, when the All Star sextet, coached by Walt Gbson, trumphed 30-0 over a staunch ex-soccer team squad nstructed by Rcky Sargent. - \Vll Ford, Frank Hennessey, Roy Johnson, John Hughes, Warren Thuotte and Phl Cleary wth capable substtutes Bob Flemng, Jm Flanagan and Wally Creedon performed for the vctors. The energetc although conquered. team was led bv Ted \Vllamson and Dck Hovey wtl full support by Tom Devne, Al '\7 alsh, Ray Lemeux and Paul Salley; wth 'Valt Morrson, Bob Lemos and Dck Sahlberg profcently com-. posng the actve reserves. The openng perod of the game w tnesscd Ford makng three touchdowns whle the remanng moments saw the tallyng of two more scores by ughes and Johnson. Dean A.ndersson, actng as peacemaker and referee, made sure that the game was played properly. He was on the ball at all tmes, and rarely dd he and hs trusty whstle mss a trck. The lnesmen were Cagnna, Dennson and Gordon, who, needless to say, dd ther desgnated duty. College Squad Defeats Alumn Team The offcal openng of the basketball season proved vctorous as the Andersson-coached Teachers Team whpped a gallant Alumn on Sat., No\,. 15, n the Boyden Gymnasum. Spectators became tense wth exctement and enthusasm as soon as Marsh Douthart got the jump ball at the sound of the whstle. mmedately Ed Zon, Rckey Sargent, Bob Teahan and Joe Kudera sprang nto acton. The Alumn quntet, composed of Regna, l\legas, Tobn, Dzenowags, and Campbell formed a zone blockade n a van effort to ward off the Red and \x/hte; but to no aval as Zon stormed the wall for a hoop. Later, Sargent and Douthart managed to snk one and two free-shots consecutvely. Before tme was called, Kudera broke loose to toss n a one-hand pushup shot from outsde the foul crcle and then he got a free throw; whch was later followed by a one-hand hook-shot by Sargent. One of the players was temporarly ncapactated, but the stuaton was quckly remeded as Dr. Andersson (coach to you) rushed to the rescue. Ths quarter was played tactfullv and calmly as each team attempted to judge the other's power. The perod ended The next canto proved to be more effectve as the teams worked harder, played more profcently, and possessed better co-ordnaton; even though effcent passwork was lackng. Ths round saw Flanagan make a skllful hook-shot from the sde court asssted bv Zon, who had just prevously sank t~ o successve free-shots. Further acton evdenced Douthart and Teahan scorng, wth Teahan also throwng one of hs llsually accurate set-shots, followed by Lemos, thus endng the half After an nformatve pep talk at haf tme by Coach Andersson, the men spurred 011 to greater heghts to really keep the Alumn guessng. Teahan started the actvty by tallyng wth a free-throw; followed by a freeshot and then a hook-shot by Pappas, wth an assst by Nolan; who later made two pushup shots, wth one ad by Douthart, thus concludng the thrd quarter More ponts were totaled by Kndera, Teahan, Flanagan and Lemos n the last round closng the contest wth a landslde vctory of for the Teachers. The frst tournament showed, as Coach Andersson remarked after the contest, "That the boys looked good". Captan Zon mentoned that "The fellows worked well but stll needed much more practce." November 21, 1947 Soccer Results- Bradford Durfee Textle Game Durfee nvaded the O\ver campus and barely managed to delver a wn over the Teachers on Tuesday, November 4th. From the openng whstle, tern pers flared and feelng ran hgh, much to the delght of a small number of \vldly partsan spectators. An energetc and enthusastc set of cheerleaders put n ther frst appearance an d added greatly to the color of the scene. n the fadng moments of the game, a desperate offensve by Ed Sweeney and George Papas backed by the brllant defensve work of Dck Hovey, proved to be n van, as the Teachers faled to tally a fnal tyng goal. Ftchburg Teachers Game A. collapse of the local's defense presented a 9-2 wn to an aggressve Ftchburg team on Nov. 6, here at Brdgewater. No ndvdual challenger may be sngled out as outstandng because al of them shared n the offensve barrage. Dck Grmley valantly tred to bolster the B.T.C. defensve untl he was removed early n the game due to a leg njury. Led by Berne Mller, who scored two face savng goals, the Brdgewater forward wall operated wth sprt and determnaton, but was unable to match ther opponents' skll. The loval and cheerful dsplay of sprt by the large crowd of onlookers, who needed lttle promptng by the smooth performng cheerleadng unt, was especally notceable and worthy of the Brdgewater tradton. As an mpartal observer, we can say that the team has potentaltes; and we can expect to have a good season; but we must remember that tlle Alumn team was not completely up to par, so the frst game can't be a postve measurng gude for the season. Another tem to note s that we shouldn't judge the value of the players bv the ponts they talled as every l1~an contrbuted toward makng the game a success. As y~t the varsty team has not been selected, but the lneup for the Alumn game was as follows: Frst team: Zon, Sargent, Douthart, Teahan, Kudera; and substtutes, Lemos, Smth, Flanaga n, Pappas, Nolan and Mazukna. The Alumn support was: Megas, Tobn, Campbell, Regna: wth subs, Fonon, Edgar, Yurkstas, Parsons and Buckley. The vvacous cheerleaders, Joan Bull, Jean Parknson, Catherne Sala, Mary Correa, Ruth Alce Henderson, and Mar gar e t Jenkns looked "mghty pretty" out there n ther attractve ensemble of red dresses and whte blouses; they surely added to the zest of the team, and to the atmosphere of the game.

As was expected, the game was fast wth the Alumn havng the edge. They felded practcally the same team that they had n ther four years of college. The college team was composed of one senor, one junor and sx sophomores. They provded stff competton consderng they hadn't played together before. The frst half was np and tuck all the way wth a te game n prospect. However more experence playng by the Alumn decded the outcome. The score was 31-26, a close game. The Alumn was represented by forwards Maron Moore, Helen Kazanovcz, Betsy McCosh, Vrgna Perkns and guards Mldred Lappen, Rta Custeau, Dornda Lovell, Kay Rogers and Jean Schlochsten. The college team n cl u de d Dot Lews, Jean Campbell, Helen KudEc, Janet Dunwoode, Vrgna S t e t s G n, \1ary Oakley, Terry Cocoran, and Ruth Roffee. They played a valant but losng game. Phvlls Schneder and Andy Farnswort1~ served as the arbters. vve hope that you'll all be all "wet" when you go to the "Y" for the only way to learn how to swm s to try t. f you enjoy beng agle, or. at least tryng to be, then come out to tum b1ng,vth Lorrane LaLberte n charge. The grls have a chance to develop ther bodes nto well-coordnated unts. Thev have a good tme dong t. You can -even learn to stand on your head -f you want to. A good nvgoratng nsde sport s bowlng, whch s conducted every lyfondav afternoon. ndvdual and team scores ~re kept so that you can keep a record of your progress. Ths sport wll probably be co-recreatonal. f you haven't the tme ths quarter, you wll have a chance to partcpate on Thursdays next quarter. Marlyn Ftzgerald s the competent drector ths year. ' l11-111_111_1111_1111_1111_ll_nll_UU", A sport that has been gatherng plenty of supporters ths year s png pong. Some of the "W oodtes" have COLLEGATE GRLL j been becomng very profcent n ths Specaltes sport and are really provdng everyone l else wth plenty of competton. Hamburgers & Banana Splts Thus vou can see that W.A.A. has el1deavor~d to gve you a dfferent and = 1 enjoyable program for the wnter "Where Everybody Meets" months. The Spotlght On Zon, Teahan Photo by Morrson That cowboy from the west-the western part of Massachusetts, s none other than Robert Teahan, who was born at an early age, and hals from Holvoke. Bob was elected as last year's basketball captan not only because of hs outstandng ablty, but because of hs conscentous atttude and steady enthusasm. From beng actve n hgh school sports to beng n the nfantry and artllery, and to enterng B.T.C., he says that although they were ntrgun~ experences, he values, above all, h~ attendance at the college. Bob lkes all types of musc, from cowboy to symphony, and to top that, he sngs. Hs lfetme ambton s to polka lke the "Baron" (Edwn Zon). We tactfully tred by subtle nqury to fnd out what he dd when out on dates, or how he kept occuped n hs free tme, but Bob stopped us short wth, " lead a dull lfe"-we know dfferent. Bob s very wllng to gve all promsng young athletes advce-on what not to do n order to keep n good physcal condton. Actually, Bob s an ardent athlete and works out vgorously to mantan the proper dexterty and necessary skll to play a champon game. He also took part n soccer as goale, and n baseball as ptcher and frst baseman. We all look forward to seeng Mr. Teahan play hs best ths year n a heavy basketball program of twenty games. Ths year's basketball captan, "Baron" Edwn Zon, s pctured as beng fve feet eght nches, 145 pounds, wth blondsh har set off by sparklng hazel eyes. Ed, Brdgewater's own, was dentfed as beng qute a lmelghter at the local academy. Numbered among hs many hgh school actvtes, ust to menton a few, are hs poston as class presdent, and baseball, football, and basketball athlete. Ed recently nherted a 500 acre estate n Poland, and rumor has t that he's on the lookout for a woman that wll work a plow. Serously though, hs ntentons are well-meant, and he promses to gve her a,vhole hour off for lunch. By steady nqury, we found out that he,vas petulant over ten-ffteens. We're sure Ed sn't alone n hs thougllt, but t's all for the good of the Common, vealth. After medtatng and delverng a smle all hs own, he pleasngly repled that fred chcken was a treat that he woudn't often mss-that's a subtle hnt, grls; now you know how to get your man. Mr. Zon (nm\' we're beng tactful) you know, spent three and one-half years n the Pacfc Theatre, wthout ever seeng a move-rght, we know that we shouldn't have sad t. Ed, who,vas an aero-photographer n the Naval Ar Corps, thought that Chna was extremely nterestng, and made the statement that Chnese women are comparable n attractveness to U.
