The Feast of Lghts Chanukah s translated "The Feast of Lghts" and s held n honor of the Jewsh Bblcal hero, Judah Maccabee, who had become the leader of a small army of Jews after the death of hs father. The army had been organzed to fght Antochus, kng of the Assyrans, because he had ordered the people to wor~ shp Greek dols and had desecrated the Jewsh Temple. Unfortunately, ths award means lttle or nothng to many of the underclassmen, because of gnorance of the exst~ ence of awards. Commttee Chooses Recpents To receve an award s a great honor, the recpents of whch are decded upon by a commttee composed of faculty members and students elected by the student body. Standards Set Are Hgh The crtera used for the choce are the ndvdual's qualtes of Sportsmanshp, Scholarshp, Servce, and St~b1ty. Personalty weghs heavly as do marks, partcpaton n sports, and extra~currcular actvtes. Each month one of these "4-S's" wll be publczed wth the hope that the students wll be remnded of these deals by someone who exemplfes them.

Every tme you hear the ear-splttng sound of two cars colldng, can you see the results? - a young grl wth the blood spurtng from the hole n her head - a dazed man wanderng around oblvous of the ccle lke slvers protrudng from hs arm - and the horrble grunts and groans of others as the shock wears off and the agonzng hours of pan set n. Can you look ahead to the endless weeks of sufferng n a tracton splnt n the surgcal ward of the local hosptal? Gruesome, sn't t? Do you turn your back and say t's fate? Or do you stop takng chances? n the splt second of a crash you mght be lucky, but death was there just the same, only he was beng erratc. f you have the nerve to drve fast, then you've got to have the "guts" to face the consequences. Drvng at seventy may make you feel as though you're rdng on ar, but seventy mles per hour s over one hundred feet per second. \\Then a dead stop occurs, somethng-meanng you-contnues ahead at the orgnal rate of speed. Each angle and pece of steel and glass n the car then becomes a batterng ram aganst your body, rppng and slashng t to rbbons. Motorng njures occur at the staggerng rate of about a mllon a year wth approxmately 36,000 deaths ensung. Before every holday, the TY1assachusetts Safety Councl estmates the number of expected accdents. Chrstmas and New Year's Eve rate hgh on the lst because of slppery roads and slowed down reactons resultng from drnkng. n gamblng wth death, you lose more often than you wn. Havng a frend s better than havng the memory of one who ded needlessly. By beng careful on the road, you'll be back to Brdgewater n January. WE,LL, S T? Lack of school sprt seems to be somethng of the past at Brdgewater, judgng from the attendance and vocal support at the last game. But, s school sprt worth unsportsmanlke conduct? tlampu!. 7 6 CAMPUS COMMENT December 16,1949 ~.gg~~~~.gg~~.gg~.gg.gg.gg~~! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~-! ~~~-!4{-!4{-!4{~~.f ~-t(~{ ~ FOOTBALL NTRAMURAL HGHLGHTS Led by the great passng of Bll \Vhalen and the runnng of Doug Barrows, the sophomores ran roughshod over the freshmen by a score of 12-0, to regn as kngs of football. Sophomores 12, Frosh 0 The frosh had no chance aganst the clckng and well organzed offense of the sophomores. \Vhalen, leadng the sophomore attack, dropped pass after pass nto the arms of hs team mates as they roamed around n the postons vacated by the bewldered freshmen. The frst sophomore touchdown came shortly after the second quarter when Erne Remondn caught a Whalen pass over center on a play carryng about fve yards. The sophs were prevented from scorng agan untl the last quarter when Whalen tossed a nfty pass nto the arms of Ed Nevrauskas, thus makng the score Sophomore Defense Good The sophomore defense was even more outstandng than ts offense. Tom Brunelle, Dck tvlorn, and Dck Stoknger allowed the frosh to complete only short passes. Stars for the frosh were Don Morey and J am Zono. Morey ran nto trouble wth hs pass recevers by sendng bullet lke passes. Ths reduced frosh offensve to a mnmum. Zono also played a great game, both offensvely and defensvely. Despte the work of these two, the frosh were outplayed n every department by the combned efforts of the sophomores. SOCCER After the competton of the varsty soccer schedule, the freshmen formed a soccer team and ssued a challenge to the sophomores who promptly accepted. The game, whch was played on the lower campus, found the frosh an easy 4-1 vctor. Souza Scores Two Goals Stu Pckard put the frosh out n front wth an early goal. The sophs retalated and ted t up on a nce bt of solo work by Sam Gomez. Then the freshmen began to clck. Frank Souza booted home two scores and Fran Curran scored the fourth goal to wrap up the game for the frosh. The frosh, ho\vever, proved that ther vctory over the sophs was no fluke. n a \vell-played, but hard-fought game they blanked the combned forces of the upperclassmen by a 2-0 count. Agan t was Stu Pckard who put the frosh team off to an early start when he scored clcanly aganst goale, Harry Topham. Souza Scores Agan The teams battled evenly untl the thrd perod \vhen Frank Souza, on a penalty shot, lfted one out of Topham's reach. The upperclassmen pressed hard, and led by Mller and Pappas, threatened several tmes. But the defensve play of Leo Mulready at rght fullback and Carl McCauley n the goal area kept them from enterng the scorng column. t looks as though B.T.C:s soccer future wll be brghter. BASKETBALL ntra-mural basketball got away to a flyng start wth all sx teams swngng nto acton, on Wednesday, December seventh. Steam Rollers 16, Ramblers 8 n the opener, the Steam Rollers, led by Ed Hesford and Fran Bennett, had too much class for the Ramblers, and rolled to a 16-8 decson. The outcome of ths game was never n doubt despte the efforts of Kelly and Topham, who were outstandng for the Ramblers. Olers 19, Captols. 10 n the second game of the afternoon, the Olers, after beng held even n the frst half, outseored the Captols by comng up wth a wn n the second half. Art Housman was especally effectve n the Olers' late surge and topped the game's scorers wth eght ponts. Buddy O'Bren and Gus Antonakos were outstandng for the Caps. Knckerbockers 17, Celtcs 7 The fnal game brought together the Knckerbockers and the Ce1tcs. "Hap" Mazukna's ball handlng and shootng more than offset the Celtc's drvng tactcs. He scored eght ponts to lead hs team to a 17-7 wn. Gregg's four ponts topped the Celts' scorers. t s regrettable that there weren't more spectators at the games. Basketball may not be played at ts best, but you can be assured of sprted acton. Come out and yell for the boys-f not for them, then at them! The center poston s occuped by Marsh "Ducky" Douthart, and hs very capable substtute s Dck Stoknger. Actve n College Upon enterng Brdgewater, zzy mmedately threw hmself nto college lfe by becomng a member of the soccer team, the basketball team and the Dramatc Club. These actvtes left Mr. Greenberg wth too much lesure; so, by the tme hs sophomore year rolled around, he had become presdent of the Scence Club, vce-presdent of the Men's Club and sports edtor of Campus Comment. Stll, he remaned on the Presdent's Honor Lst and n hs senor year became vce-presdent of Kappa Delta P, the natonal honor socety n educaton. Fast Break Type Basketball Used The change to the fast break type of basketball has caused some amount of be\vlderment among the team, but as tme goes on the new system wll work tself out to the best advantage.
