Ffteen Eastern Senors Selected To College 'Who's Who' By PAT WERT Ffteen Eastern senors have been named to "Who's Who" n Amercan colleges. These students selected for scholarshps and leadershp were chosen by a commttee of sx faculty members and sv students by secret ballot. Each student was requred to be a senor and had to receve more than one-half the votes of the commttee. Fve Rchmond students, Fred Engle Jr., George Hembree, Eleanor McConnell, Harold Moberly, all graduates of Model Hgh, and Marjore West, a former Ludlow Hgh graduate were selected. Three Covngton students, all Holmes graduates, were chosen. They are Betty Lee Nordhem, Vvan Pelly, and Roy McEndre. Other Kentucky students selected were' Claude Bvns, a Wallns Hgh graduate from Lousvlle, Matte Gardner of Elzabethtown, Jane Wlhote of Frankfort Hgh/ Mary Edmond Burton, from Harrodsburg, Lous Mannng, a Lynch Hgh graduate, Clnton Helton of Mt Vernon Hgh, and Betty Jane Hawkns, a Carton Hgh, Carton, North Carolna graduate. Teacher Exams To Be Gven The Natonal Teacher Examna- - tons, prepared and admnstered annually by Educatonal Testng Servce, wll be gven at testng centers throughout the Unted States on Saturday, February 7, 95. At the one-day testng sesson a canddate may take the Common Examnatons, whch nclude tests n General Culture, Mental Abltes and Basc Sklls, and Professonal nformaton; and one or two of nne Optonal Examnatons, desgned to demonstrate mastery of subject matter to be taught. The college whch a canddate s attendng or the school system n whch he s seerng employment wll advse hm whether he must offer the Natonal Teacher Examnatons and whch of the tests he should take. O. Box 592, Prnceton, New Jersey. A completed applcaton, accompaned by the proper examnaton fee, should reach the ETS offce not later than January 9, 95. New Band Leader For Eastern Harold F. Atksson, Aurora, Mo., has been named band drector at Eastern. Atksson s a graduate of Drury College, Sprngfeld, Mo., and of the Eastman School of Musc of the Unversty of Rochester. He served as drector of musc for the Cleveland, Okla., schools before enterng Eastman for hs graduate work. He comes to Eastern from the Boston Unversty School of Musc where he was dong further graduate work and was frst horn player wth the postgraduate orchestra. He succeeds Wllam Tarwater, Jr., who has been called nto mltary servce. Tarwater came here from Peabody College last September. He had made remarkable progress n developng the college band. Shortly after he began hs work he was ordered to report for actve duty wth the Army. Eastern pettoned the Army to postpone hs nducton untl' the close of the frst semester but the petton was dened by headquarters offcals of the Thrd Army. Caduceus Club Elects Offcers By MARTHA PERGREM Actve work of the Caduceus Club was resumed wth a busness meetng Monday, Oct. 9. Offcers elected are: presdent R. V. The followng Monday, members and guests of the club were entertaned by Mr. Hopp, who gave a very nterestng lecture on "Hypnoss." Frosh Tea Held At Presdent's Home On Tuesday, Nov. 2, the attractve home of Presdent and Mrs. W. F. O'Donnell was the settng of a lovely formal tea. The charmng atmoshere of the home was accented by soft candlelght, fall flowers, and sweet musc. The tea was gven n honor of the freshman women by Mrs. E. Y. Case and Mrs. W. F. O'Donnell, who were asssted by the sophomore women. HUDDLESTON "There were 439 dfferent students enrolled n art classes last sprng and there are nearly that many ths semester," related Dr. Fred P. Gles, Head of the Art Department at Eastern. "Some seventy-two stulents are enrolled n one class." Many young people have gone from Eastern's Art Department to become a success n the professonal world. Recently there appeared n the Exhbton Room of the Arts Bull, dng a water color exhbt by Mr. Lawrence Becker. Mr. Becker came to Eastern from Wheelng, West Vrgna and was a fullback on "the 946 Maroon eleven. He reelved hs Masters Degree n Art from George Peabody College, NashvUle, Tennessee, n 948. He s now head of the Art Department n East Central Junor College, Decatur, Msssspp. Ten dfferent courses were offered n Art ths semester at Eastern wth Dr. Gles, Professor Alle Fowler, and Professor Dwght D. Gatwood as nstructors. Dr. GUes receved hs B. A. degree at North Texas State, hs M. A. and Ph. D. at George Peabody College, a B. Mus. from Southern Methodst Unversty anr dd addtonal graduate work at the Amercan Conservatory of Musc. Mss Fowler and Mr. Gatwood receved both ther B. S. and M. A. degrees from George Peabody College. EXPENSES DEDUCTABLE Accordng to the December ssue of Mademoselle magazne, teachers can rejoce at the appealscourt decson that Nora Payne Hll's summer school expenses were deductable from her federal ncome tav. Eastern's 950 Homecomng Was College's Greatest By LAURA ELLS Ah, yes, Wnter's whte glory has fnally settled over the campus, but not n tme!! Eastern completely outfoxed her. Our dear old alma mater had a cold but beautful day?2 «h t0 d,?p ay her beauty, brans, and brawn for the 950 Homecomng. Coach McBrayer Speaks At Clnc "Ablty to teach boys how te to play basketball s the secret of successful coachng," Paul McBrayer cage mentor of Eastern and a former Al-Amercan guard at the Unversty of Kentucky, told Southwest Vrgna and East Tennessee coaches and players durng a well-attended basketball clnc n the Vrgna Hgh School gymnasum on Nov. 29. " am constantly searchng for better ways to teach basketball - McBrayer, whose Maroons met Vrgna Tech there, declared. He added that "perfecton n fundamentals s the real answer to the problems of the game." Despte adverse weather condtons, hgh school and college mentors from throughout the area braved slppery roads to drve to Brstol for the clnc, many of them brngng along ther key players Coaches and players of the local hgh schools, ncludng Slater and Douglass, sat n on the clnc. Player Demonstraton McBrayer, ranked as one of the outstandng teachers of fundamental basketball n the naton, used fve of hs Eastern Kentucky players n demonstratng the type game played by hs club. McBrayer went through fundamentals of passng, shootng, floor work, defensve play and team attack. The Eastern coach stated that n screenng prospects for the Maroons that Jumpng ablty, speed and hgh school background were studed. McBrayer added that he kept a chart on hs squad members, studyng mprovements n shootng, ablty to keep possesson of the ball, and personal fouls durngthe season. Lkes Pvot Attack The pvot attack n hs opnon, McBrayer sad, s stll the best offense. "t takes a great boy to play the pvot n modern basketball," he sad. "He must be a good shot, good.feeder, unselfsh n hs passng, and be able to 'take f under the basket." McBrayer, usng a player to demonstrate, showed the fve pvot spots used n hs offensve system. Followng the clnc, whch drew school offcals, school board members and scores of fans n addton to coaches and players, a flm of the Oho Valley Conference tourna- ment fnals last season was shown. n ths game Eastern Kentucky, swtchng to a control type of game, came from behnd to defeat Western Kentucky after tralng by nne ponts at the half. : Fletcher, McAuley At Cwens Meet Ramona Fletcher and Conne McAuley were recently sent by the Cwens as delegates to Natonal Conventon of Cwens held at Penn. State College, Pennsylvana. The schedule for the conference ncluded a seres of workshops and dscusson groups as fell as actvtes for entertanment. Representatves from Cwens chapters all over the Unted States worked together to promote natonal unty of all the actve chapters. There was no lack of brans n the deas for the floats, the canddates, and the precson wth whch the parade progressed. e Next came Beauty's tme to shne. All the canddates for queen assembled n the Lttle Theatre from where they paraded nto Walnut Hall for the nspecton and approval of the fve judges. These were three men and two women who graduated from Eastern n 940. The judges fnally selected Mss Blanche Mc- Cown as the 950 Homecomng Queen of Eastern. Mss McCown, a sophomore from Harrodsburg, s a brunette wth the prettest blue eyes you ever dd see. That sprnklng of freckles across her nose only adds to her 20 years of charm and beauty. She s a mghty sharp lttle gal, 5-5 and 8 lbs. She s an elementary educaton major and s an actve member of Cwens, who she represented n the parade. All We can say s congratulatons, Blanche, you deserved t!!! Before the brawn took over on the feld, the canddates and queen were presented to the alumn, students, and frends of Eastern n a colorful pre-game ceremony. Kyma Club presented each canddate wth a mum trmmed n "Bg E's" colors. Mss McCown was escorted onto the feld by the presdent of the Alumn Assocaton and crowned by Presdent W. F. O'Donnell wth a crown of whte carnatons. She carred a bouquet of red roses. The mghty Maroons then took the feld and took the Bowlng Green team rght off ther feet wth a rousng 34-7 vctory. t was a fttng way for the thrteen senors to end ther last home game. The annual barbecue was held n the cafetera and, of course, the food delcous. Homecomng Dance The homecomng dance was a huge success! Musc was furnshed by George Doyle's band of Lexngton. Walnut Holl, of course, looked as lovely as ever. Hats off especally to Bll Horn and hs Kyma Club and to each and every person who helped make Homecomng-950 the very best day of the year! Yes, n case some of you poor over-worked students have been, too busy to realze t, Chrstmas wll agan be on December 25 ths year. On December 6, everyone here at Eastern wll be on the way home to spend Chrstmas and New Years n hs own way. Some wll have to go as far as New Jersey, others wll go to Pttsburgh, New York, Chcagb, and ndanapols, whle sone only have to go as far as Ashland, Covngton, Lousvlle, Harlan, or Lexngton. But every Joe, Mary, Jane and-johnny wll spend hs Chrstmas and New Years n much the same way. Whether n New York, Pttsburgh or Lousvlle, you wll probably gather around the Chrstmas tree wth your famly and open the many beautfully wrapped presents. Everyone, especally the younger ones, wll have the wonderful feelng of gvng, as well as recevng. Later, the famly wll probably gather around a bg table, whch s completely weghted down wth everythng good to eat, wth just as much eagerness as had exsted around the Chrstmas.tree.. On New Year's Eve, most of us wll welcome n 95 at a neghborhood party or, n any case, wth many of our frends and relatves. Hundreds of thousands of people wll celebrate New Year's Day at one of the many major or mnor football Bowl games, wth maybe some of Eastern's populaton ncluded n ths. All of ths s just as t should be n every home n the Unted States, but many Amercans wll be unable to be around on Chrstmas or New Years. We must not forget the solders who are fghtng for world peace n Korea. We must not forget, ether, the reason we are celebratng ths wonderful and glorous holday. The brth of Jesus Chrst s an event whch has been celebrated for over 500 years by the Chrstan world, and should be remembered as such. Enjoy your holdays, but don't forget those who have made and are makng them possble. C, for an all-mportant battle wth the hghly touted Wolfpack of North Carolna State. Ths s a "must" game for the Maroons, for Coach Everett' Case's North Carolna squad s rated one of the top three n the naton. The Wolfpack s headed by AU- Amcrcan Sam Ranzno, a hgh scorng forward. Ranzno s backed up by three sensatonal sophomores, 6-9 Larry Lvngston, 6-8 Bob Goss and 6-8 Bbo Speght. More Trouble Ahead After tanglng wth NC State, the Maroons wll fly back to the Bluegrass for a Frday nght battle wth the Flyers from the Unversty of Dayton.
