She s actve n Kappa Delta Tau, Women's (Contnued on Page Three) Student nstructors Save L n Monday Swmmng ncdent Quck acton and level-headedness by two Eastern students and ther nstructor saved the lfe of a Lousvlle freshman Monday at the Alumn Colseum ndoor pool. Darrell W Robnson, 18, was pulled from the pool n the closng mnutes of a swmmng class by Gene Francs Pett, a Lexngton junor, who was a student assstant nstructor durng the ntermedate class perod. Pett, and Mss Jance Huffman, also a Lexngton junor, took turns applyng mouth-tomouth resusctaton untl the Lousvlle youth was revved about seven~ mnutes later. Mss Dorothy Klrkpatrck, nstructor of the class, meanwhle cleared the pool area and telephoned for an ambulance. Doctors say they beleved some llness, perhaps pneumona, caused Robnson to fant n the pool and reman unconscous. They sad yesterday normal breathng had been restored. Pett and Mss Huffman, both of whom hold Red Cross nstructors' ratngs, and Mss Klrkpatrck, were prased by QUCK ACTON.., Two Lexngton students, Mss Jance Huffman, left, and Gene Francs Pett, wth ther swmmng nstructor, Mss Dorothy Krkpatrck, rescued Darrett Robnson, Lousvlle freshman, who submerged Monday mornng durng a regular swmmng class. Mr. C. T. Hughes, head of the Health and Physcal Educaton Department for ther quck acton n preventng the- vctm from drownng. Robnson was spotted "no longer than 20 seconds" after he had. sunk to the bottom. He cted the acton of everyone nvolved as the reward of havng "hghly-qualfed" people on hs staff. Ths week's accdent, he sad, was the frst serous one n 33 years. Mr. Donald Combs, Eastern swmmng coach, for whom Pett establshed two school records as a member of the state champonshp team, sad that the ncdent showed "mature judgment n an emergency and plenty of courage." Mss Krkpatrck, who was hghly prased by Mr. Hughes for her "level-headedness and judgment," almost smultaneously saw that the vctm had been removed from the pool and the recovery process begun, cleared the pool of all other persons, called for the ambulance, and nstructed the Jantor to open all ext doors for rapd removal. Mr. Combs, who was not present, but who had receved all detals of the ncdent, sad: 'The kds (Pett and Mss Huffman) reached down real deep to show 'plan, oldfashoned guts' n revvng the boy." Both were taken ll whle gvng the resusctaton. They smply exchanged postons and contnued the process, wthout losng rhythm, he sad. Also gven prase for ther alertness were Wllam Collns, jantor n the Colseum, who met ambulance attendants at the entrance of the buldng, and nurse, Mrs. Mary Shannon, of the College nfrmary, who rode wth Robnson to the Patte A. Clay.

3 J_ - ew *m\ t ( Frday, Oct. 16, 1964 EASTERN PROGRESS PAGE 2 Requrements Hgher Enrollment SKows Drve For Qualty who were not n the* upper half of ther graduatng class. A total of 262 students were dened admsson because they could not re-enter the college from whch they were transferng, 251 students were dened, readmsson to the College due to poor performance last year. Only eght n-statef freshmen were dened admsson. t stands to reason, that as a result of strcter admsson standards, Eastern has not only ts largest student body ever, but ts best, snce only those people that have demonstrated the" ablty to do college work have been admtted. Tuton Hke Wll Be Protested The enrollment news story n last week's ssue of the Progress dd more than ndcate that Eastern s a growng college wth a hgher enrollment than ever before. f one read deep nto the artcle he would see that t also ndcated Eastern's drve for qualty. An unprecedented hgh fgure of 979 students were dened admsson, approxmately doublng the same fgure for last year. Ths s a result of new, more strct, admsson polces adopted by the Faculty last sprng. Largest proporton of those not admtted was out-of-state freshmen From The Lousvlle Courer-Journal For reasons that baffle psychologsts, there s nothng more nfuratng to the college student than ncrease n tuton. He wll accept soarng costs of food, housng, books, beer, madras jackets and sports cars as facts of economc lfe, but a ten-dollar rse n tuton s a clear case of bureaucratc arrogance, desgned merely to complcate lfe. And unless thngs have changed sncee our college days, announcement of hgher tuton rates wll send moans, groans and cres of outrage echong across campuses at the Unversty of Kentucky and the fve state colleges. Part of ths atttude traces to the fact that many students at state schools are there by the skn of ther fnancal teeth, and hardly able to survve a drastc ncrease n costs. And there s a feelng, of course, among parents as well as students that snce they have already pad for the state colleges wth ther taxes they should not have to pay agan wth hgher tuton. Unfortunately, the cost of educaton rses at state-supported schools as fast and as nexorably as at prvate nsttutons. And the tuton rases that wll take effect n the next two years from $110 to $140 per semester for resdents, from $260 to $360 for non-resdents at the unversty, and from $75 to $100 for resdents and $150 to $225 for non-resdents at Who Wll She Be? state colleges reflect drectly and almost h drect proporton, the ncrease n the cost of ndvdual educaton. Even at these rates, however, four years of educaton at a state college or unversty stll consttutes the bggest bargan n the world today. Not only does the student get an edacatlon for a fracton of what t actually costs to keep hm n school, but he gets an educaton of constantly mprovng qualty. The day s fast dsappearng when state schools are automatcally consdered nferor n facltes, faculty and standards to prvate colleges. On the contrary, the advantage of tax support for the state schools, and the economc pnch on prvate schools depend on tuton and endowment are rapdly resultng n relatve superorty n both equpment and the calber of teachng at state schools. Ths contnung and almost nevtable development may cause for some a panful change n educatonal tradtons, but t s probably gong to prove better for everyone concerned. For as the college populaton contnues to grow, an ncreasng proporton of the student flood must be accomodated by tne publc colleges wth access to the publc treasury to fnance ther expanson, and on tn) publc colleges must depend, to an ncreasng extent, the level of our future broad educaton. 6&ST6R 42nd Year JOY GRAHAM managng edtor DOUG WHTLOCK edtor LARRY ELLS busness manager oofess Founded n 1922 GERALD MAERZ campus edtor news edtor feature edtor sports edtors clubs edtor assstant news edtor Tranng, Alertness Help Save Lfe Frst ad tranng pad a huge dvdend for two Eastern students ths week when they alertly saved the lfe of another student n a freshman! swmmng class. The quck acton of Gene Pett and Mss Jance Huffman s a trbute to themselves and to' Eastern's Physcal Educaton Department. When Derrell Robnson* a studnwrt n a swmmng class taught by MFss Dorothy Krkpatrck, went undbr wafer near the end of the C'od, he wes mmedately taken the (Met by Pett and Mss Hbrrmen 1, who appled mouth-tomouth resusctaton to the vctm. Student nstructors n the freshman swmmng class, Pett and Mss Huffman, demonstrated that knowledge of frst ad prncples s somethng more then just "nce to know." How About A 'V Day? They also demonstrated that the tranng offered n our Physcal Educaton Department does more than gve book tranng to ts students, but prepares them psychologcally to admnster ther knowledge. The frst sgn of recovery by a drownng vctm s regurgtaton. When ths happened Monday, t forced Mss Huffman to releve Pett n admnsterng resusctaton. Later Pett took over agan. Swmmng Coach Don Combs sad,."these kds had to reach down real deep to be able to do ths. t s gratfyng to see that our tranng has been frutful." An ncdent of ths type occured at another State nsttuton several years ago, but the absence of traned nstructors resulted n the * Gay Danford Mary Jane Madden.". Ken"Spurlock, Roy Watson, Fam Smth Norrs Mles loss of lfe. We are fortunate at Eastern to have student ' assstants wth Red Cross nstructors' ratngs helpng to supervse swmmng perods. Gong, stll deeper, t s also an ndcaton of the fabrc of whch these students are constructed, Many people are concerned about what s happenng to Amerca when ts ctzens stand by and watch others de. ncdents are n papers almost daly about a group of people standng by whle an accdent vctm helplessly gasps for lfe. True, a large part of ths may be due to lack of tranng. But s t also not possble! that a frghtenng proporton of our populace has lost ts sense of value for human lfe? We are proud to say that ths s not the case af Eastern.. Band Day Means A Lot To Eastern For the fourth straght year Eastern wlt host the largest number of hgh school bands and muscans ever to partcpate n any Hgh School Band Day n) t h e Commonwealth. Besdes the publcty and obvous publc relaton value of Band Day to Eastern, there are also thousands of hgh school students that get ther frst glmpse of Eastern each year at Band Day. Apparently Eastern makes a good mpresson upon) these students, snce Dr. Charles Ambrose, dean of admssons and regstrar, has sad that Band Day s one of the year's busest for hs offce. Hgh schoolers and parents flood the offce all day askng nformaton about Eastem.' t s safe to say that Band Day s one of the reasons for Eastern's soarng enrollment. The: almost unheralded task of organzng the countless detals of an operaton as large as Bank! Day has belonged to Mr. John L. Vckers, executve assstant to Presdent Martn, snce the attracton's concepton n Makng arrarfgetments for over 4,000 muscans s no small task. n fact, Mr Vckers starts makng plans for one Band Day almost before another s past. Mr. Vckers s a man of great personal appeal, and t s no doubt that much of the success of Eastern's Band Day s due n large part to ths. Eastern has been known to set asde days n honor of people before, Coed, Or Not Coed so t would not be breakng precedent to desgnate next year's Band Day as "V-Day" or some! other approprate ttle n honor of Mr. Vckers. Last year's Band Day was called "K-Day" n honor of Mr. Nck Koengsten, drector of t h e Marchng Maroons, who leads the massed bands n ther half-tme presentaton each year. tja*5«allowng Grls Creates Problems (ACP) THE XAVER NEWS, Xaver Unversty, Cncnnat, Oho, ths sprng campagned edtorally for a coeducatonal school. But the newspaper had a columnst who seemed to be campagnng aganst ths campagn. Fred Bernsten wrote: "Some people have decded, after much careful consderaton, that t mght be a good dea to make Xaver a coeducatonal nsttuton. t would be advsable to consder some of the drawbacks. The mmedate problem s a lack of facltes. Xaver, for nstance, has no golf course. Another very practcal consderaton s that the celngs n almost all the corrdors are a bt too low to accommodate the ever-uplfted femnne proboscs presumng, of course, that we mght be able to draw a few of the regulars from Cncnnat's two "hgher educaton" fnshng schools. Qute a few addtons would have to be made to the currculum here. Academc courses would have to be replaced wth courses such as Home Economcs,-Elementary Educaton and sundry other courses usually grouped under the ttle of "art." Armed guards would have to be statoned n the lbrary n an attempt to secure slence. A new telephone center would have to be establshed. A mental health clnc would have to be bult. Petv rats and cockroaches would have to be allowed n the rooms of all transfer dorm students from any of the more ancent grls' to prevent any homesckness for the old alma mater. f these consderatons would not persuade one to abandon so mpractcal a phm, could only pont out that thngs would" never ever be the same at Xaver agan. And a better reason to adopt ths plan do not thnk could be found." The Naton's Best Twrl er - Majorette, Mary Jo Roll, Wll Lead 4,000 Tomorrow, The best baton-twrler n the country, a pretty redhead from Farborn, Oho wll perform for her bggest muscal audence when she leads 4,000 unformed bandsmen tomorrow to kck off Band Day actvtes. Out of spangled unform, she s at ary an* serous freshman, not gven to talk about her achevements. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lee Holl, have always encouraged her nterest n twrlng. Early skll led to her choce as chef majorette wth her hgh school band, leadershp n a twrlng corps, and ultmately to the natonal champonshp. She has been a baton teacher, too, and feels youngsters haven't proper coornaton for the art, "much before the age of eght." Mary Jo's own superb coordnaton gves her skll n sports; she s especally adept at basketball and swmmng. She's also a clarnetst, but band drectors have always preferred to star her as a majorette. Forgot Baton The worst moment n Mary Jo's twrlng career came when she drove off wth her parenta to a contest, forgettng her baton. She has, lke all majorettes, dropped a baton occasonally, but, lately, these occasons are rare. Such s her skll that she has handled flamng batons n many performances. Mary Jo's traned eye sees a new trend n twrlng: the emergence of some masculne stars lke Guy Allen of the basketball Globetrotters, n a feld long domnated - by grls. Stll, most of her young admrers - attracted bv the glamour and exctement of leadng the band wll probably contnue to be lttle grls, the sort who have made up her followng for years. She takes ths adulaton serously and feels that, as an object of admraton to youngsters, she s oblged to observe the hghest standards of conduct at all tmes. After tomorrow Band Day at Eastern Mary Jo s certan to have at least 4,000 new fans, the members of sxty hgh school bands who wll watch her halftlme show on the football feld.
