8 - Frday, ^'l 4, 1988 EASTERN PROGRESS Page Seven It would be a pleasant educaton In tself jusf'to wander at lesure over England and Scotland, Ireland and-wales, and the fascnatng slands that' consttute the Inner'and Outer Hewrdesj but my plans called for more than sghtartng There was plenty of hard, work ncluded n my schedule last summer, as I had Been fortunate enough to be chosen by the Insttute of Internatonal Educaton as one of the students from the Unted States to attend the Summer School for Overseas 8tudents at the Unversty, of'ednburgh The unversty s reputed to be more lke a unversty n the Unted States than any other n,the Brtsh Isles, but I found as many dfferences as smlartes For one thng, beng a student wth 'ho professonal responsbltes was n tself a delghtful and restful change, and attendng classes "on the other sde of the deek^ was- sheer fun But there were other aspects of lfe n a Scottsh unversty that would be of more general nterest than one's personal reactons to class work I arrved n Ednburg at Waverly Staton on Prnces Street early-on the day that the Summer Bchoo^tarted, and went nto the North" Brtsh Hotel,", for break- or the frst fast *rh«-e * met * tme what becanp 9 most famlar sght throughout the summer Practcally, everybody n the place was readng the newspaper I never n all nw lfe saw such a place for readng newspapers as Scotland Mef; -Women, and chldren they all* rea>f the papers and I mean read them And they folded them neatly, tucked them away n shoppng bags, coat pockets, or under ther arma, and went on about the day's work I never saw a newspaper, or any knd of paper, left lyng about all summer After breakfast, I went out on Prnces Street to get a bus or tax to take me to Carlyle Hall The nght before, when I had boarded the Royal Scotsman n London, the weather had been almost unendurably hot; ths mornng n Ednburgh t was actually cold As many of you know, Prnces Street has shops along the north sde only, whle on the south sde s a deep ravne, beau-* tftuy landscaped and aglow wth gorgeous flowers The Old Cty looks down from ts regal heghts across the msts and across, "the centures to New Ednburgh far below t at «A feet- ; The busy modem cty was enterng on the work of a new day end a new week Buses were emptyng ther hordes of workers, earn were" streamng past, shop doors were beng opened, awnngs adjusted, and flower boxes watered and tended It was hgh tme that I reported to the resdence halls Should t be a bus or a tax? On a bus, I could rde a mle for a tuppence, three mles for fourpence, and anywhere n the cty for sxpence However, I cho3e a tax and luckly so The bus stopped three blocks across the campus from Carlyle Hell, and my two sutcases were untoteably heavy $ My knock was answered by a pretty woman, vvacous and charmng n manner Upon my tellng her my name, she repled, "Oh, yes! From Kentucky When dd you reach Ednburgh?" I told her I had been n the cty less than two hours "Won't you come Into the dnng ha l and have breakfast? Not even another cup of tea?" Shortly before I ME home, I had wrtten the Insttute of Internatonal Educaton n New York, askng whether I needed any type of dentfcaton or credentals to present updo my arrval at the Unversty and had been nformed by Mss Camlla Strong that they knew all about me and were awatng my arrval Mss Strong certanly knew whereof she spoke When one of the Junor Hostesses unlocked my room door and carred my sutcase n for me, I saw that the name plate on the door carred my name Rosemary told me that coffee would bo served n the Commons Room (parlour, to you) at eleven and that I should stop at the Drector's offce before then f possble My room looked out over the lovely lawn and flower beds of the quad, and the French door* opened out on a lttle balcony My room was furnshed very smply, but adequately Thd unque thng that caught my eye the mnute I entered the roon war a bowl of beautful flowers on -the table, freshly cut and aanged that mornng, and lyng besde them was my mal I thnk-1 fen n love wth Carlyle Hall that moment When I went down to the Drector's offce, I dd not have tme to dentfy myself, for I was greeted by name and asked about my trp and about Kentucky as f I were a personal frend nstead of a student just enterng the Unversty;* After a few mnutes of pleasant conversaton, I was handed a large manlla envelope bearng my name and was told that t contaned all of the work In the Unversty, and t work n the Unversty, And t really dd The tme and locaton of classes, the schedule of lectures and lecturers, meal tckets, dentfcaton card, certfcate of membershp n the Unversty, schedule of tours and entertanments, drectons for usng the Lbrary, a map of the Unversty, a map fo the cty, and a complete lst of assgnments, tests, and the "delegacy" of readngs for my secton n lterature were ncluded In thrty mnutes I had completed my enrollment and was free to do as I pleased for the remander of the day I "pleased" to spend t on Prnces Street and on the Castle Terrace (May I say just here that ths WHAT ft A TEN-DAY DICTATOH? How I- longed for un- lmted hours and dollars to spend n them!
