Fnnsh Students Came and Went A group of 35 Fnnsh students came to see professors they'd met whle the nstructors were teachng at the Unversty of Jyvaskyla n recent years. By NANCY RUFF Thrty-fve fourth-year Fnnsh students vsted Longwood March 30-Aprl 6. The students, physcal educaton majors, on sprng break, from the Unversty of Jyvaskyla, traveled hours va Helsnk and Frankfurt before arrvng at Dulles Natonal Arport. After another four hours by bus, the Fnns reached Farmvlle. Dr. Nelson Neal, who taught dance at the Unversty of Jyvaskyla for fve months, es- corted the group to Nags Head and Ktty Hawk over Easter weekend. He also gave them a tour of Rchmond, and Charlottes vlle. The students were mpressed wth the geographcal varety n such a small area, n contrast to Fnland, whch has few nce beaches and no mountans. The athletc, tanned vstors also saw the Catalnas, Longwood's synchronzed swm team and the dance program, "Wnds of Color." Monday nght the Fnns performed the "Lkunalta" to a full house n the dance studo. The entertanng show combned moderr dance, comedy acts and Fnnsh songs. The guests wrapped up ther vst wth a party at D.T. Bradley's Tuesday nght before leavng the followng day. One student, holdng up a gant pggy bank, nstructed hs fellow Fnns to depost cons so that Longwood students mght vst Fnland. Tuton Holds Next Year PARENTS DANCE N THE STRETS There wll be no tuton ncrease at Longwood College next year for Vrgna resdents. n a rare departure from the natonal norm of recent years, tuton for n-state resdents for the academc year wll be $1,488, the same as ths year. About 90 percent of Longwood's undergraduate students are Vrgna resdents. The college's Board of Vstors set the new tuton and fees Frday. "Ths s very rare; t mght be a frst for Longwood," sad Rchard Hurley, vce presdent for busness and legslatve affars. Dan Hx, fnance coordnator for the State Councl of Hgher Educaton for Vrgna, agreed that the decson was "unusual." The only smlar cases n recent years occurred at Vrgna State Unversty, where tuton and fees for all students remaned the same n , and wth the state's communty colleges, where tuton dropped slghtly last year. "Tuton at Vrgna's colleges and unverstes held steady for a few years n the md-1970s, but has been gong up ever snce," he sad. "ncreases n tuton have been averagng between eght and 10 percent n recent years." Last year, tuton and fees ncreased by an average of 7.6 percent at state-asssted colleges and unverstes, and ncreases also averaged 7.6 percent at prvate nsttutons n Vrgna. Longwood's overall ncrease last year was 4.2 percent for Vrgna resdents and 5.9 percent for out-of-state students. Next year, at Longwood, the overall cost for a Vrgna student lvng on-campus wll ncrease by only $100 - from $5,398 to $5,498, or 1.8 percent - for those on the 15-meal plan. About 70 percent of the students choose ths meal plan. The $100 overall ncrease reflects a $140 ncrease n room and board and a $40 decrease n the comprehensve fee. About 85 percent of the students lve on-campus. Tuton for out-of-state students at Longwood wll be $3,274, a $298 ncrease. The total cost for out-of-state students lvng n resdence halls wll rse from $6,886 to $7,284, or sx percent. The decson to hold the lne on n-state tuton was prompted by optmsm over projected enrollment for next year. "For the frst tme snce 've been here, we feel comfortable n our enrollment projectons. We've had two strong years of enrollment, and everythng looks good for the comng year." "The regstrar's offce has scheduled about 1,900 students for pre regstraton for next fall, as opposed to 1,700 last year," sad Robert Chonko, drector of admssons and enrollment management. "That's an ntal sgn these students wll be back. That rate probably wll be the hghest n our hstory." Longwood expects to enroll about 2,823 full-tme undergraduates ths fall. About 720 wll be freshmen and 197 wll be transfer students.» Longwood expects to receve 4,000 applcatons - a 17.2 percent ncrease over last year - and probably wll close freshman admssons June 1, several months earler than usual. A watng lst wll be used for subsequent applcants. Because of ncreased applcatons, Longwood has been more selectve n the students t accepts, Chonko sad. He also noted that Longwood's percentage ncrease n applcatons s "one of the hghest of any have seen reported by any publc college or unversty n Vrgna." Ths reflects a contnung trend at Longood, where each year for the past sx years" the College has had the largest number of applcants n ts hstory.

Dear Edtor, am wrtng n response to the letter n the March 29 ssue of the Rotunda, submtted by Anne Meade Stockdell. am not wrtng to crtcze Mss Stockdell's vews, but to pont out some thngs to the entre student body that come to my mnd after readng ths letter. Frstly, why s there a constant battle between Greeks and non-greeks? Each student on campus s an ndvdual wth dfferent needs and dfferent talents. Each satsfes hs needs and uses hs talents n dfferent ways. The Greek system s a very mportant part of campus lfe, but do not thnk by any means t s the "backbone" of Longwobd College. Mss Stockdell, ' the Greek organzatons mght be the "backbone" of your lfe, but thnk Longwood would survve f they dd not exst. ncluded n Longwood's goals, and for that matter any other college's goals, s to be an nsttuton that offers a varety of opportunty for each ndvdual. Students choose to be scholars, athletes, SGA members, ambassadors, sprt leaders, members of mltary programs, artsts, performers, etc. A student can be every one of these thngs and be Greek. The fulfllment that students get from beng a member of a fraternal organzaton s very mportant to those nvolved, but Mss Stockdell, you should realze that just because you are Greek does not mean you are among the select. You chose to be Greek to satsfy your needs. Others of us fnd fulfllment n other organzatons around campus. prde myself n beng a good student, a collegate athlete and a Longwood Ambassador and am very "satsfed wth my status." As for socal actvtes, snack bar. D. T. Bradley s, etc., let me ask a queston. Are there other forms of entertanment on ths campus? What about athletc events, dance performances, drama and musc presentatons, lecture semnars, art ex- m unw ' '*-. hlf^'hwh m *3 To the Edtor hbts, and clubs? Yes, Greeks are nvolved n these thngs: not smply because they are Greek, but because they are talented ndvduals just lke the rest of us. Mss Stockdell, we "GD's" do enjoy the "specal actvtes" that you sponsor and can also apprecate the hard work you do wthn your organzatons and for chartes. Don't the Greeks also enjoy events that non-greeks sponsor such as sportng events? Can't you also apprecate the hard work and dedcaton that we do? You seem to consder ndependents prvleged to be allowed to partcpate n Greeksponsored events. Don't be so narrow-mnded as to thnk that those actvtes are the only forms of entertanment we can fnd. could contnue, but thnk my pont has been made. hope the entre student body, Greeks and non-greeks, realzes that each organzaton and each ndvdual on campus s vtal to the "Longwood Experence" and that we are all proud of our afflatons. Let's try not to pretend that our own organzaton alone holds Longwood together! Respectfully, Lynda Chenoweth Have some prde! Dear Edtor, have come to the concluson that many students are not happy unless they have someone or somethng to btch about. Ths, my frend, s a shame because we all know that what one gets from somethng s equvalent to what he contrbutes to t. s t far to assume that ther contrbutons are brngng them an abundance of joy? hope so because t really annoys those of us who do lke Longwood and we are sck and tred of students' unfounded complants. As a Longwood legacy, over sprng break had the opportunty to attend an alumn chapter meetng, and was ashamed of some of my peers as watched ths group of lades, some from classes as early as 1929, proudly remnsce about ther alma mater. have to wonder f seventy years from now wll we have the same prde n our school that these lades shared, or wll we stll be searchng for petty faults and flaws? Beth Wllams Jarman not to blame for S-UN's lack of gan Dear Edtor: am wrtng to respond to the edtoral n last week's ssue that cted "poor campuswde plannng" as causng a low turnout to S-UN's 1964 concert. Ms. Justs felt that certan events conflcted and caused the low turnout. Ths s qute possble, but several of her facts were a bt off. Frst of all, the producton of "Grease" was held on the nght of the concert. Last week's edtoral stated that "the producton of Grease was planned after S-UN had authorzaton to go ahead wth 1964." Ths s not true. All plays are scheduled the year before they take place. n fact, the producton was noted on the Handbook calendar. Secondly, the ROTC was mentoned. Ths event took place at Hampden-Sydney. How can Longwood have any say about what takes place on another campus? Fnally, Ms. Justs sad t would be "logcal" to have an offce that coordnates campus events. t s qute logcal, and we do have such an offce. All major campus events are scheduled through Phylls Mable's offce. Representatves from varous organzatons and departments meet wth her n the sprng to schedule the next year. The meetng for next year took place on March 28. t s qute mportant to schedule thngs properly. am sorry that there wasn't a better turnout for the concert, but t was hardly any one group's fault. Gene Kerns / * Stop Cox Slobs! Dear Edtor, am a very unhappy resdent of Cox dorm. would lke to express by dspleasure at the broken vendng machne n the downstars lounge, that, by the way, was just fxed one week and two days before ths wrtng. Not only was the vendng machne broken, but the cgarette machne as well. What s ths place comng to? t s very dsturbng to walk nto the lounge and fnd that the vendng machne that was just restocked and the glass replaced s broken agan. There was glass scattered all over the floor, and of course the candy was stolen. Ths s no way for Longwood to make money! Rumor has t that the Deltas who lve n Cox on the ground floor are responsble for ths act of vandalsm. t s also rumored that the Deltas wll be charged for the damage to both machnes. do not beleve that t s the Deltas who are responsble for the damage. There s no proof that a member of ther fraternty broke ether of the machnes, therefore do not thnk the Deltas should be charged. do have some suggestons that wll keep the vendng machnes n workng order all year round. f the machnes were placed n the front foyer or study lounge, near both the front offce and the REC's room, there would be less chance of the machnes beng broken. Many resdents have dscussed ths and thnk t s the best possble soluton. Even though 'm dsgusted wth the quantty of vandalsm n ths dorm, beleve n justce and don't thnk the Deltas should be blamed for everythng that happens n Cox. f anyone does have nformaton about the vendng machnes n Cox, please, please, please, notfy campus polce or LAVA (Longwood Aganst Vandalsm Assocaton): they can and wll do somethng about t! Despte only gvng up two hts, Whtby was touched for sx runs and was replaced after a thrd of an nnng by Ftzgerald, who had only seen playng tme at frst base. Ftzgerald went 6 and 2/3 nnngs to get a wn. Thompson came onto ptch the eghth to nsure that the seemngly endless game would end. Hall Hts for the Cycle Whle nearly destroyng Longwood's outstandng defensve statstcs, the game provded offensve stats that went through the celng. Hall had the best game of her career, gong 4-4 and scorng fve runs, but that was just the begnnng. She walked her frst two tmes up and then decded she would rather ht. n her thrd trp to the plate, n the thrd nnng, Hall faced loaded bases wth no outs and jumped on the frst ptch, and as they say n the bg leagues, t was "gong, gong, gone." Hall ht a trple, a double, and a sngle n her next three at-bats, httng for the cycle and fnshng wth eght RBs. Whtby went from the mound to rght feld and proved she could ht, gong 4-6 wth four runs. Daley also scored four runs, addng two RBs and two stolen bases. Sophomore Melssa Gwnn went 3-6 wth three runs and freshman Kell Shemref went 3-5 wth two RBs ncludng the game wnner. n the frst game of sngle elmnaton Longwood ousted Ferrum 9-4. Although out-ht 11-10, LC and ptcher Stacey Thompson pulled out the wn. Chrs LeBel ht 3-4 wth four RBs, the frst RB on a second nnng double whch proved to be the game wnner. Aganst host UNCG n the sem-fnals Longwood was agan out ht (7-5), but agan won. Mller was on the mound as she lowered her ERA to Hall had two of LC's fve hts wth a trple and a double. Despte a dramatc loss, Longwood accomplshed a lot last weekend, leavng Greensboro wth ts head held hgh. Coach Loretta Coughln now posts a 15-5 record, the best ever for a LC softball team. The team's 15 wns are fve more than last year's The Lady Lancers have eght games remanng and, wth the coachng, desre, depth, and ablty that they possess, should wn approxmately eght. Throughout the season and especally n two tournaments, Longwood has establshed tself as a team to be reckoned wth. LC s not the team to beat.

There are good reasons for ths. When bought my copy of Bll Watterson's frst Calvn and Hobbes comc strp anthology, fttngly ttled Calvn and Hobbes, made myself promse that would not run home and read the whole thng n one sttng rght off the bat (as 1 have wth every Far Sde and Bloom County book 've purchased). Exactly what s t about ths lttle kd and hs sometmesstuffed, sometmes-lve tger that appeals to so many people? You'd thnk we'd have had enough of kds n the comc strps: Peanuts, Denns the Menace, Famly Crcus - the lst could go on. These lttle people and ther antcs have been around for years, and suddenly some new kd on the block comes along and more or less steals the show. How? Why? Perhaps Watterson has ht upon the wnnng combnaton, takng the fnest assets of each of our favorte comc kds and rollng them all nto one. Calvn can go from a Lnus-esque comment lke "Hobbes, have a conjectural moral queston. Maybe you can help..." to Menace-sh guffaws about hs frend Tommy laughng mlk out of hs nose durng school lunch. "No one' Who has read a Calvn and Hobbes strp can deny that ths whrlng-dervsh duo could take on the Famly act smart wth mom and dad (but they stll love the lttle bologna loaf), won't eat ther lma beans, and fear the monsters under the bed the mnute the lghts go out. t sounds so typcal, lke t's all been done before. Yet Calvn s so good at dong what he does (Hobbes, too), and s so cute whle he does t, (Hobbes too), that even the oldest gags are fresh and funny n the hands of these two. The publc s nvted to hear Maloof dscuss hs work. Maloof also wll conduct a workshop durng hs vst to Longwood. The workshop wll be Thursday, Aprl 14, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Space s lmted n the workshop; to make reservatons, call Longwood's Department of Vsual and Performng Arts. By NANCY RUFF "Wnds of Color," a hghenergy performance by Longwood's Company of Dancers haled the comng of sprng wth a kaledoscope of colorful costumes, backdrops and lghtng. The show, held March 30 and Aprl 1 n J arm an, was the troupe's second producton of the school year. Under Drector Tammy Tpton Nay's gudance, the students showed professonal ablty n choreographng ther own peces as well as n nterpretng exstng ones. Dance Mnor, Hlary Slvera choreographed "The Awakenng," a modern dance pece. Slouettes crcled a goddess-lke fgure on the darkened stage to the musc of UTFO's "Master Baby." The sprtual "Jacobs Ladder" was the nspraton behnd a modern dance choreographed by Ted Shawn durng the 1920s. Pat Cook, nstructor at SVCC, sang ths old and wellknown hymn as dancers horzontally "clmbed the ladder." An unusual and unexpected dance, "Bts and Peces" was an mprovsatonal work by Cyntha Hawkns of the Erck Hawkns Dance Company and guest of the college n January. Each dancer was requred to move n some way and then establsh contact wth another person "n a clump," as the dance was explaned by company of Dancers Presdent, Susan Hanks. Lsa Ham and Jll Hart choreographed and performed "Beats and Rhymes," a snappy jazz pece complete wth flashng lghts, vvd costumes and hot pnk rbbons. "Just Gong," a dramatc pece by Dr. Nelson Neal and Susan Hanks, conveyed the dea of movng wth the flud sounds of Mannhem Steam- roller and R. Lynch and T. Channng. The dance, wth ts mxture of fast movements and sometmes slow, almost motonless ones, seemed to evoke the tmes when one must take brsk, decsve acton or slowly struggle to take the next step. "Out and About," a Rockettes-lke tap dance was a fresh departure from exstng dance forms. The work, choreographed by Tammy Tpton- Nay was set to "Fgleaf Rag" by Scott Jopln. Wth contagous energy and enthusasm, dancers n "Wnds of Color" establshed a drect lnk to a responsve audence. Creaton Not A Scence By SCOTT LOVNG Dr. Wllam A. Shear gave the fnal Faculty Colloquum Lecture for ths year on Wednesday, Aprl 6. n hs lecture, Shear dscussed the rvalry between the supporters of Creaton Scence and those of Natural Selecton. Shear then went on to explan that Creaton Scence was not a scence at all, but only exsted through the manpulaton of scentfc data. Shear stated that Creaton Scence was orgnally set up as a counterweght to Charles Darwn's deas about Natural Selecton, otherwse known as Evoluton. Supporters of Creaton Scence argue that man was placed on Earth by a Creator, as opposed to the arguement that man evolved through Natural Selecton. Shear wrapped up hs lecture by sayng that Creaton can be argued on relgous grounds, but cannot be argued as a scence. Shear s a professor of bology at Hampden-Sydney College. Erc Kraft, whose seral novel was the featured work n freshman Englsh last sprng, has just publshed another volume n hs ongong hstory of Peter Leroy's hometown, Babbngton, N.Y. Herb 'n' Lorna, the fctonal bography of Peter's grandparents, Gumma and Guppa, has just been released by Crown Publshers, who announce: "From the author of the crtcally acclamed seral novel, The Personal Hstory, Adventures, Experences, FREE PREGNANCY TEST All servces confdental. Last year at ths tme Longwood freshmen were nearng completon of the eght nstallments n Peter's story publshed by Warner Books (New York) and Apple-wood Books (Cambrdge, Massachussetts). n ths seres, Peter grows from nfancy to young adulthood, becomng n "Call Me Larry" the author of Larry Peters adventure stores for boys. n Kraft's latest work, Peter tells the story of hs grandparents' romance, begnnng at "the upstate New York mll town of Chacallt, Lorna's brthplace on the bank of the Whatst Rver, to Babbngton, Long sland, where Herb runs the local Studebacker dealershp, to Punta Chachazuda, Florda, where the couple fnally settles." Ther hstory also traces the brth and development of the erotc jewelry busness n the Unted States. Unknown to Peter, hs grandparents had second careers, n addton to sellng Studebakders and workng n a slde rule factory. An added feature are photographs from the story ncluded n the mddle of the text. Longwood's Broadcastng Class, under the drecton of Dr. Pntton Lockwood, desgned and conducted a rado lstener survey several weeks ago, and the results were recently released. Out of 390 total responses, WLCX receved 103 votes for the most lstened to staton wthn 60 mles. WRVQ (Q94.5) came n second wth 75 votes. Other leadng statons were WRXLandWFLO.
