1 the ~ Joke ~ ''.. Weldy Volume 25, Number 23 Thursday, March 28, 1985 ssue next week WLUSU ons OFS on tral bass by Andrea Cole The Wlfrd Laurer Unversty Student Unon ('NLUSU) wll on the Ontaro Federaton of Students on a temporary bass for the year Only two Board members voted aganst the move; they were Grad Drector Wllam McBan and Arts Drector Jeff Burchll. Monka Turner, charperson of OFS, attended the meetng to make a presentaton to the Drectors. She outlned the structure and functons of the Federaton, and answered the many concerns Board members voced. The Plannng and Prortes Commttee and the Commsson Servces and Revew Commttee presented a bref to the Board whch outlned the moton to on OFS. The cost wll be 35~ per fulltme student, or about $},470. Any expense s seen as a con, of sorts, but on the pro sde, WLUSU Presdent Matt Certosmo sad Laurer wll have a vote at the June OFS plenary meetng. Also, temporary membershp s cheaper than full membershp, whle allowng the school to get the feel of the organzaton. A referendum s requred at the end of the temporary membershp of one year. The two commttees whch studed the matter feel the referendum wll ncrease student awareness, although t wll requre the expendture of more tme and money. Both Dr. John Wer, presdent of the unversty, and Dean of Students Fred Nchols were asked to respond to the OFS ssue. "They were not negatve," says Certosmo...They were farly ambguous, as they prefer to be on matters such as ths." Both Wer and Nchols suggested that the man concern should be WLUSU autonomy and dentty. OFS comprses about 200,000 postsecondary students. Wthn the man structure t contans four commssons, each wth ts own full executve and budget. These commssons look after the four maor areas of graduate, undergraduate, college, and nternatonal students, and they make the polces that bear on ther areas of concentraton. "We do both admnstratve and nformaton organzng, as well as research and lobbyng," says T umer. OFS dd some hghpowered lobbyng for student concerns such as tuton, accessblty, and the new Student Ad program, all Bovey recommendatons. "The rally was used for a lot of dscusson about the speculated upcomng electon," she sad. "n partcular, the Ontaro Federaton of Labour (OFL) used our rally to dsagree wth the repayment loan program n the (Bovey) report. They wthdrew ther support of t" Turner also mentoned that all member schools, whether full or prospectve, wll be nvted to attend a meetng wth provncal Educaton Mnster Keth Norton. "He's a very easygong guy," says Turner wth a grn. "He's a lot dfferent than Dr. Stephenson." Full membershp n OFS costs $3 per fulltme student; however, ths matter wll be decded by the students at large durng the fall referendum. n Laurer had a prospectve membershp, but the subsequent referendum turned down the full membershp possblty. Electon partcpants cleared of wrongdong by Uz Jefferson A moton brought forward by the Plannng and Prortes Commttee of WLUSU, and approved by the board on Sunday, has cleared everyone from punshment for ther actons n the past WLUSU electon. Both WLUSU Presdent Matt Certosmo and the Electon Revew Task Force admt that there were wrongdongs n the past electqn. The task force, n the frst phase of what wll be a twopart report, says former WWSU Presdent Kevn B}ers overstepped hs dutes n more than one way n the past electon. Certosmo sad, "An nfrngement dd occur but punshment for t s beng wthheld." He also sad, "The OMB (Operatons Management Board) decded that nstead of lookng nto the past we would try and establsh a rule followng pattern by reevaluatng and updatng the regulaton." The moton at Sunday's WLUSU Board meetng to clear everyone was brought forward by WLUSU's Plannng and Prortes Commttee char vana Fabrz. Fabrz asked that "all ndvduals nvolved be exonerated of any wrongdong." The Electon Revew Task Force, whch was orgnally gven a mandate to make recommendatons about the past electon to the Plannng and Prorty Commttee, cted three examples of Byers' oversteppng hs dutes. Three charges were based on the fourpage WWSU advertsng supplement Byers had prnted wthout WLUSU approval. The expendture of over $8()() was not approved by the OMB or the board of drectors. All expendtures of ths sze need some type of approval before they can be ordered. The other twc charges were based on the operatng agreement that exsts between WLUSU and WLU Student Publcatons. The contract clearly confnes the rght to publcaton of such materal to Student Publcatons. The task force also feels that the power of the chef electoral offcer (CEO) must be made clearer for future electons. Accordng to Task Force cochar Jono Tce, the CEO ob descrpton wll be under ntense revew durng phase two of the Task Force report The report on phase two wll be avalable to the Board and the publc n October. Accordng to Tce, "n the future, the recommendatons wll be on fle for future reference. The names wll be forgotten but not postons. The purpose was not to pont fngers and create a potentally ugly stuaton but to mprove t" The Electon Revew Task Force was establshed the frst week after the recent WLUSU general electon by WLUSU Presdent Matt Certosmo. The task force was gven a mandate to revew the electon and to make recommendatons dealng wth ths vear's electon and how electons n the future can run smoother. The task force s chared by Jono Tce and, untl recently, Melany Frankln. Frankln relnqushed the char when she was named to the poston of WLUSU Commssoner of Unversty Affars. She wll be replaced by a student who does not have any formal connectons wth WLUSU. photo by KarmVran Enthusastc readers flock to read Cord. 6 page 6 Thursday, March 28, 1985 lle CORD WEEKLY Goodbye As t s the end of the year and ths s the last 'serous' Cord of the year, t should be my responsblty to wrap up the year n some sort of profound way. Should be, that s. nstead, ths space wll be dedcated to a group of people who have gone by vrtually unrecognzed for ther work and effort n the past year. Of course speak of the Cord Weekly staff. Wth a core of some twenty people ths year's staff was able to produce one of the best papers ths campus has seen and has at the same tme weathered a storm of protest and nsults to complete ths year ntact, and stronger than before the year started. There s not the space to pont out each person ndvdually and to gve credt for the fne ob done. Be t suffcent to say each person on staff s nvaluable to the fnal product and each person worked to the best of her/hs ablty to brng you the Cord each week. Snce ths s to thank the staff and to pont out the wonderful work they have done wll stay clear of the low ponts of the year and nstead touch on some of the thngs that made ths year so great There were two hghlghts for the staff ths year, one slghtly more rewardng than the other. The most rewardng moment for most of the staff occurred ust a few weeks ago when we ran a feature on pom~raphy. t was rewardng because as a staff we spent long hours agonzng over whether we should run the feature and the pctures, whether we should run the pctures wth certan areas blacked out, or not at all. When we fnally came out wth the fnal product there were of course the expected gasps of surprse and dspleasure but for the most part people understood why we ran the feature and the pes. J'.'\any people ca~e to the offce and thanked us for the feature.and havnq the guts to run Jt As a staff t was nce to be understood and apprecated for a change. The other hghlght of the year occurred early n the frst term when we ran some stores about the decson to reect the Gay Club's Homecomng Parade Float We receved a couple of letters, one n partcular that was heartwarmng to any student newspaper staff. Some of the quotes from the letter we receved are: "t would be easy for you to gve Laurer a newspaper that was nothng more than a chatty ~kdrop...lnstead, by dealng wth delcate and controversal matters you stck your necks out for others even at tmes when ths means you must stand_ alone." "...for a whle the Cord was the only lttle candle burnng n the mght for the young gay people on campus." 'Your farmndedness and mpartalty, not to menton your persstence, are valued and apprecated." Ths letter and others we receved ths year n support of us when we champoned the mnorty_ or unpopular sde gave us all the strength to serve the WLU commumty the way we thought t was rght and not n the cheerleadng style that others would lke to see. To the Cord staff and our supporters: thank you for a great year, one that helped us all grow a lttle and gave us a better understandng of why we are n unversty and more partcularly, why we slave away at a good unversty newspaper, the Cord Weekly. Before elaboratng further on the penaltes nvolved a few defntons should be made clear; thus reference s made to Page 36 of the Undergraduate Calendar. Cheatng s defned as: "the use, gvng, recevng, or the attempt to use, gve or receve unauthorzed nformaton durng an examnaton, or the presentaton of a sngle work n more than one course wthout the nstructor nvolved." "Penaltes are leved n relaton to the degree of nfracton of academc honesty, and range from requrng the student to redo the pece of work, through falure of that pece of work, falure n the course, to suspenson from the Unversty for a term or more." "Plagarsm s the unacknowledged presentaton of the work of others as one's own." Cheatng s a serous crme wth severe consequences. Many students do not realze the serousness of ther actons or extent of punshments leved. The present cases range n severty, hence n punshment The actons range from a grade of zero n a partcular assgnment, to temporary suspenson for one year, to expulson from the Unversty. n the latter case, the lfe of the student s not only runed here at Laurer but chances of acceptance at any other nsttute of Hgher Learnng s very lmted. s t really worth t? Can anyone afford to get zero on an assgnment whch s probably worth over 15%, let along beng suspended for a 1year perod or longer? What has happened to academc honesty? What makes people resort to such actons? Can t be the pressures nherent n the system? We cannot blame our program for makng us resort to such pressureseveryone. does not do t! Most people cope, gettng ther work done ndepen dently wthout havng to chea_t or plagarze. 'm not sayng that workng wth someone else or gatherng nformaton from varous sources s cheatng. 'm not sayng we should not work n groups, share deas and nformaton that's what the Busness program demands of us! They force us to work n groups, learn to cooperate and share deas. There s, however, a dstnct dfference between sharng deas and cheatng. The penaltes leved for cheatng are not to shock other students. These are penaltes that have been used n the past for smlar crcumstances. The Unversty s not Graduatng student vents steam before leavng Ths beng my last year at Laurer, there are a few thngs have to get off my chest (as t were) before leave ths nsttuton of learnng (Ahem). Frst of all, a word about our lbrary. 'm sure all n attendance that day apprecated knowng these detals and that they all remembered the ncdent ust as dd when these wonderful posters appeared. (Too bad the lbrarans don't see them.) My second comment refers to the "art" (dare say zoophla erotca) whch graced the Concourse for the two weeks mmedately after the Cord prnted a centre feature artcle on the topc of pornography. Tsk Tsk.l'm told t all has to do wth Zeus and Leda or somethng lke that, butforgve me for sayng tl'm offended, seeng a lady and a duck makng t (so to speak). Next, comes the Torque Room. 8 page 8 Thursday, March 28, 1985 THE CORD WEEKLY Byers revews hs year as Presdent The completon of my term n offce as presdent of the Students' Unon now over, have had the opportunty to pause and reflect over the past year. n seekng an approprate ntroducton found t only fttng to quote Machavell who wrot6: "My ntenton beng to wrte somethng of use to those who understand, t appears to me more proper to go to the real truth of the matter than to ts magnaton; and many have magned republcs and prncpaltes whch have never been seen or known to exst; for how we lve s so far removed from how we ought to lve, that he who abandons what s done for what ought to be done, wll rather learn to brng about hs own run than hs preservaton." Whle Machavell was a realst, so was ths year's Board of Drectors, so, n the sprt of realsm, offer the followng: Frst and foremost, would lke to clear the ar and report to all that dd not resgn from my term n offce. say ths for have receved several telephone calls and many knd remarks as well as letters, whch made me feel qute good. t s always a pleasant feelng to be so lavshly complmented! To all of you and especally those who attended my last two (past) Board of Drectors meetngs, am extremely grateful and thank you. t seems to me that, gven ths knd of response, t s worth a bref explanaton. Snce receved my mandate from the students, have performed to the best of my ablty n representng the student body. n ths respect have always sought to be far and honest n perfonnng my dutes. Although had always performed my role, there had been rsng concern from the other members of the executve to my conduct durng the recent electon. As a result of the nfamous "Blue Letter" the executve decded n my absence, that should resgn. Whle can understand the personal motves of these ndvduals who rased the ssue of resgnaton, refused to accept t, and hold no ll feelngs toward them. Although, whenever am n Wlf sand hear Bob Dylan sng "Postvely 4th Street", know what he means. n any case, would lke to brefly present a few reasons for my decson to reman as presdent. Frst, was only fulfllng my role as presdent who s the sole representatve of all the students to that poston by the fact of electon. n ths role as chef representatve of the students, t s the fole of the presdent to the best of hs ablty to "preserve, protect and defend" the legslaton, polces, by laws, regulatons, and resolutons of the Corporaton. Nowhere else s ths so explctly stated than n the poston descrpton of the presdent. Second, dd not resgn for, out of those fve ndvduals who sought my resgnaton, four were apponted offcals who are smply there to perform a bureaucratc functon. They each report to the B.O.D. regularly who are accountable to the students. Thus, they are admnstrators not a cabnet or smlar nner elte, smply admnstrators. t s absurd that an apponted offcal n any elected government would ever seek the resgnaton of an elected offcal and reman n that poston. The other ndvdual who sgned the letter was none other than the vcepresdent and t was only for ths reason that the letter was taken serously. As a result, called an emergency Board meetng of the elected members to whom report, to not only clarfy the ambguous statements that were crculatng. At ths meetng t was clearly evdent that, though my actons were certanly questonable, that had performed no llegaltes. Because there were no motons put on the floor or perhaps a moton of mpeachment, can only conclude that those to whom am accountable to (elected Board of Drectors), beleved that performed no wrong. Whle wll always face crtcsm for my actons durng the electon and, perhaps end up the scapegoat for these actons, am convnced that what dd was rght. beleve, as an elected offcal, that had to place my heart above my head. Asde from th1s ncdent durng the past year, whch wll unfortunately mar the performance of ths year's Executve (ncludng myself), the Board of Drectors performed admrably. To substantate ths pose the followng queston: "Are we better off today as a student of Laurer than we were one year ago?" Wthout a doubt, we are far better off today, than ever before. There are plenty of achevements that the Board of Drectors can be proud to lst. From evenhanded grant allocatons to Campus Clubs to the much apprecated extended hours at Wlfs. Everyone apprecates these changes. These changes by themselves, however, do not warrant the past Board's effectveness. Credblty and accountablty are two key words that mmedately come to mnd. Credblty refers to trust and belef. The B.O.D. have won credblty by effectvely takng stands on varous socal problems, whether they exst not only n socety at large, but rght here on our own campus. By attackng problems such as drnkng, smokng, housng, educaton, and gudelnes for Homecomng Floats, we have taken the ntatve of not only recognzng the problem, but have attacked them vqorously and sought alternatves. Laurer now boasts the Natonal Headquarters for Bacchus, WLUSU has drectly become nvolved wth drnkng by not only warnng students of drnkng and drvng, but by also establshng the "'m Drvng Club" and Laurer and Guelph (smultaneously) were the frst unverstes to offer dfference n the prce of beer between lght and regularnumerous unverstes are now followng sut. Much credblty was attaned durng the summer wth the future of Ontaro Unverstes beng questoned. By publshng our report and puttng forth our vews, we were able to seze an opportunty and ssue student nput nto a crucal area where students are drectly nvolved. consder the attenton that we receved from the Commssoners, Unversty Admnstrators, and the Press to be very good ndcators of the respect that WLUSU earned. Our attenton to the qualty of educaton contnued on November 15th when WLUSU ntroduced the Peanut Campagn and the ANte Study n the Ubrary. Besdes credblty, our B.O.D. has acqured a great deal of accountablty or perhaps, more approprately, legtmacy. n the past year, ths hgh level of legtmacy can be accredted to representng the students, whle remanng obectve. Whether t be n regards to the Cord, the Unversty, or varous groups of ndvduals, the Board has remaned obectve and far n representng the entre Unversty envronment. WLUSU' s success depends not only on our credblty wth the Unversty, but our accountablty to and communcaton wth, the students. Ths nvolves the Coop students who are often neglected. Ths past summer the Turret was opened on occason to allow these students to ~se ther faclty. Extra fundng was also made avalable so that two ssues of the Cord would be publshed, addtonal fundng was also made avalable so that a Semnar on "Women's Networkng" could take place. Let's be honest, the Unversty operates twelve months a year and so must WLUSU, as was demonstrated last year. n most cases, the typcal student at Laurer s far more nterested n the 24 hour study space, a relaxng T.V. Lounge, and a safer campus than n proclamatons or plattudes. t s wth ths phlosophy that the past B.O.D. acted. f one were to carefully revew our past actons: Food n Wlfs, new Sound System n the Turret, a soon to be Bankng Machne, new Lounge Furnture, Free Telephone at the nfo Centre, SAFE, Campus Clubs Room, Watermelon Festval, Arts & Lecture Seres, Safety of Unversty AveHazel St, the Shnerama Bowl, Development Fund Contrbuton, a much mproved Boar's Head Dnner, WLUSU Apprecaton Nght, etc, to name but a few. t s e.asy to see that ths year's B.O.D. were respondng n the students' nterest and more mportantly, we were representng the whole unversty communty. Wllam Kent, drector of the admsson's offce, says students' academc record wll stll be the targest factor n the offce's decson to accept applcants. But he says the Profle wll wegh more for those n the cutoff range. As well, the Profle may be used for decsons on scholarshps and for program counsellng, but wll not be freely accessble to all who mght want the nformaton, Kent says. Rchard Balns, a researcher for the Ontaro Federaton of Students, says he hopes the Profle wll not be used as another barrer to unversty. : As long as t's beng used to nclude, not exclude, we approve of t," he says. "t's mportant that t be done, especally for the margnal students, but we're cautous that t's not as obectve as t could be." B.C. students stage protests VANCOUVER (CUP) Vancouver commuters headng for the cty centre got an early mornng message March 19 B.C. students are fed up wth educaton cutbacks. Hundreds of L..angara, Douglas and Kwantlen College students walked along several Vancouver brdges to show the provnce ther anger over the onslaught of fundng cuts that have ht B.C.'s postsecondary system. The latest B.C. budget reduced unversty and college fundng by fve percent The students carred sgns demandng ncreased educaton fundng and asked passng drvers to honk n support Later n the day more than 1,000 students ralled at the L..angara campus. The brdge protests were part of a provncewde day of concern for educaton. Students from more than a dozen B.C. colleges also swamped the offces of Premer Bll Bennett and the educaton and unverstes mnsters wth calls complanng about educaton underfundng. Donna Morgan, executve offcer of the Pacfc wng of the Canadan Federaton of Students, says students are becomng more actve as the B.C. government's polces ht home n the form of staff layoffs and program cuts. "The cuts are happenng so fast people can see the educaton dsntegratng before ther eyes," she says. CFSPacfc s also organzng a postcard campagn urgng the government to restore the fundng losses and threatenng t wth the loss of students' votes n the next electon. CFSPacfc hopes hundreds of students mal n the cards to the Vctora legslature. Food posonng Versa's fault TORONTO (CUP) The luscous pastres and scrumptous crab crepes served at a Unversty College dnner party March 3 contaned a lttle somethng extra. Twenty students who ngested the Versa Foods delcaces spent 3 to 4 days sufferng from severe nausea, vomtng and fantness. One student, Nadne Gorsky, suffered from such a severe case of food posonng she collapsed n resdence and was sent to hosptal. Despte overwhelmng evdence to the contrary, Versa Foods spokesperson Peter Malchow nssts that the students all had "stomach flu." When confronted March 5 by sck and angry students sayng they had food posonng, Malchow sad: " thnk t's the flu...don't make an acc..usaton lke that. You'd have gotten t rghtawayftwasfood posonng." Accordng to the Toronto Hosptal for Sck Chldren, salmonella bactera posonng symptons show up 24 to 48 hours after tanted food s ngested. A senor employee of Versa Foods, who asked that her name not be used, says the frozen crab meat was to blame because t was mproperly prepared. "t was left out too long," she sad. The employee also revealed there had been a maor malfuncton n the cafetera's food freezers a few weeks ago and some food thawed out Despte assurances by Versa rooas management that spoled food was thrown out, employees nsst most food was refrozen and served to students. Brewpubs should be allowed f you've been followng the press ths year then you've notced a tendency for the "ssues" to nvolve somewhat large amounts of money. The powers that be up n WLUSU have dscussed OFS, the Turret's sound system, a typesetter for Student Pubs, a rado staton, etc. But the most obvous, most useful and most appealng dea yet to be put forward s about to be made a "brewpub". Yeah, a "brewpub". What's a "brewpub" you ask? Well, allow me to enlghten you. A "brewpub" s essentally a mnbrewery attached to a pub. Pcture a brewery smaller than the Brck Brewery and you have the general dea. Now pcture t producng a qualty brew unque to W.L.U., that would sell only n Wlf s and the Turret Brewpubs are common n Brtan and have yet to make an mpact here n the colones. The frst brewpub n Canada was the Troller pub n Horseshoe Bay, B.C., ust outsde of Vancouver. t was started a few years back by a man named Frank Appleton, a former qualty control supervsor for a maor brewery there, who got fed up wth the qualty of beer avalable to hm. He and hs assocates were nspred by an organzaton called CAMRA (the Campagn for Real Ale n Brtan) who successfully rentroduced brewpubs to many places across the U.K. They easly obtaned permsson from the B.C. provncal government and were soon producng 30 kegs ( 1800 ltres) of Bay Ale every 21 days. The beer used only top qualty barley, hops, and malt. The beer was "real" ale, made wthout beng chlled, fltered, artfcally carbonated, or pasteurzed. Because they produced so close to the fnal destnaton and only n kegs, they were able to offer a premum qualty beer at regular prces. t became so popular that they were sellng out by 8:30 or 9:00 p.m. every nght, a mere two weeks after they started. As Dave Patrck, one of the owners ponted out, 'We grossed $600,000 n Ths s about what you'd expect for a pub wth a capacty of 100 people. But ths year, we're proectng sales of about $g{)(,ooo. The 50% ncrease s because the Profs not lazy con't from page 6 one who told a class recently that he marks research essays n an hour. The man s so brllant that he has "read t all before anyway." There are no lazy professors n our school and there are none who aren't, n every sense of the word, "real" people. Take for example the professor who ntroduced hmself and, for hs second sentence of the term explaned, "fm a son of a Bay ale has taken off." Charles Maclean, charman of CAMRA as of Aprl 1984, sad brewpub beer would account for approxmately half the sales volume of a typcal brewpub. He places startup costs at roughly $5Q,OOO. Ths prce would vary dependng on the sze of the operaton desred. Just thnk what ths would mean for Laurer! Thnk of what t would mean to the Student Unon! They would have a very proftable source of revenue; that would put them on the map and allow them to laugh all the way to the bank Of course, there's two sdes to everythng and here's the other one. Rght now, brewpubs are llegal n Mller's Ontaro. Ontaro legslaton prohbts operaton of "ted houses" pubs wth any connecton to an alcohol manufacturer. Wth the monopoly that the Brewers Warehousng people have on beer dstrbuton n Ontaro, there wll be some legslatve hurdles to overcome. But, btch." (Wth the dsappearance of Howard Cosell from Monday Nght Football t was refreshng to see evdence that unfounded arrogance had not really dsappeared from the world at all.) Sensatonalsm only gves rse to conflctng feelngs and dscusson. n a system as perfect as ours there s no need for dscusson. Mr. Czerkawsk acted rresponsbly by submttng such a Another potental problem has to do wth fnancng the brewpub. Not really. Should t cost, say $50,000, then ths would be borrowed from a chartered bank at gong nterest rates lke any other busness venture. No ncrease n student fees or dran on current WLUSU bank accounts would be necessary. The admnstraton wouldn't be nvolved n ths, thereby gvng we, the student body, full and absolute control over ts operaton. Should they have ursdcton over ths sort of thng they wouldn't use t. Not only would t provde plenty of good publcty for W.LU., but have you ever notced how many staff and faculty use Wlfs? They wouldn't dare refuse us, because the profs and staff would revolt! The money generated from the beer, our beer, would be enough to pay back the loan n 2 or 3 years, tops. No, there s no problem n fnancng t Some sceptcs wll complan that Laurer's "too small" for such a large expendture. Laurer, despte beng such a "small" place has been frst n many felds. We were the frst student unon n the country to desgn, construct, and run our own student buldng. Look how What propose s for WLUSU or somethng connected to t, to ntate a campagn for all Ontaro unverstes to band together and pressure the provncal government to change ther much the S.U.B. cost! antquated way of thnkng, and allow brewpubs. Once the postve fnancal benefts of such an undertakng are ponted out to the unversty's BACCHUS started here and look where t's gongnatonwde! We had two pubs on campus years ago, whle even today larger unverstes have respectve student governments, fewer, smaller, or dnger pubs. they'll quckly on Just recently was sent, and forces. f the beer strke had lasted longer, then ths would have been easer to perhaps you were too, a form for a Royal Bank credt card; ths s not a bg deal, but t s accomplsh, but we'll ust have nonetheless a frst for a to rely on the combned weght of tens of thousands of votng, taxpayng students to lean on the government A brewpub here at Laurer would requre fulltme staff (a brewmaster, producton student unon and a bank WLUSU and WLU have been frst n many thngs and we should be the frst n ths as well. NO LONGER should our pubs, and hence US, be held control people, etc.). No hostage by the olgopolstc problem; perhaps Chuck and tyranncal breweres, and Tatham would be nterested n forced to consume a lqud beng a brewmaster? or Dean Amercans call "beer", Nchols? t could also provde because of the provncal parttme obs for students. government's boneheaded As for space, the brewery doesn't have to be physcally ad!3cent to the pub. way of thnkng. 11 THE CORD WEEKLY Thursday, March 26, ENTERTANMENT Puppets are the happy end by Ruth Demeter f you lke happy endngs, you would have been pleasantly surprsed by Happy End, presented by the Unversty of Waterloo Arts Centre on March 20. The show was hardly a tradtonal one, whch made the endng more enoyable than most. Happy End s a puppet show, but the puppets themselves are a very small part of the program. The three manpulators make no attempt to hde themselves, nor do the two women who do the voces of the thrteen characters n the show. Musc for the show was wrtten by Kurt Well. Well has recently been featured here at Wlfrd Laurer n the Musc department's opera Street Scene. Well's hauntng songs, whch feature many sharps and flats, tell stores of the seeder sde of lfe. Ths partcular story features a gang of varous stereotypcal bad guys who are busy plannng a hest on Chrstmas Eve. Ther leader, a woman known as the Fly, s angry wth Bll Cracker, the toughest of the group. n steps the Salvaton and n Army, partcular Halleluah Ll, who tres to save the hardened souls. She spends hours to convert Cracker attemptng by speakng hs language. Her fellow solders dsagree wth her tactcs, and have her kcked out of the Army. Bll s also threatened wth removal from the gang (n a more volent fashon). oppostes Of efforts at salvaton. course, these two fall n love through Ll's The story s told largely through song, as each character sngs about hmself/herself. The gang members sng of the dffcultes of beng bgshots, succeedng at burglary, and lvng characters wthout love. The Army share a host of bzarre and amusng hymns wth those they try to save, tunes lke Brother Gve Yourself a Shove and The Lquor Dealer's Dream. The actons of the puppets and puppeteers are also mportant to the story. Many of the gangster puppets are constructed of scrap materals that look lke weapons of volence. All of the puppets are ncomplete, and the manpulators become extensons of ther characters. Theacrobatc movements of Jean MacDuff, Frank Meschkulet and Robert More madethe puppets more lfelke, and they used ther facal expressons as ether reactons to the characters or agan as extensons of the puppets' personaltes. Ths was remarkably successful; at frst the unobstructed vew of the puppeteers and sngers seemed dstractng, but the talents of those nvolved made ths unusual approach to a puppet show qute successful. Charlotte Moore and Judth Orban both have lovely and powerful voces. Ther solos had great but mpact, even as voces of characters, ther sngng was at tmes mpressve, harsh (for the hoodlums) and at other tmes tender and sorrowful as devout Army members. t s a remarkable achevement to have the vocemakers, muscans and puppets manpulators, work so well together to present such an nterestng show, especally snce none of the humans n the cast was ever dstngushed by name. Ths meshng of characters, whle perhaps not gvng the members a chance n the lmelght, makes for a very enoyable show, as no one s contestng for more attenton. Of course, the show has a happy endng. Halleluah Ll gets her unform back, and she and Bll Cracker seem destned to spend a happy lfe together. Even the wcked Fly fnds happness on Chrstmas Day. Though the seems plot rather preachy, the show never was. Ths unque approach to theatre (and salvaton) pad off wth a most successful evenng of entertanment. Shakespeare flourshng by Tmothy Neesam To add floursh to Shakespeare can be a dangerous task Many a Shakespearan producton has been led to ts demse because of overblown or dramatcally anachronstc theatrcal devces. When the Unversty of Waterloo's Drama Department presented The Merchant of Vence, March 1326 and March 22 and 23, they were takng a chance, usng costumes prmarly from the late nneteenth century n order to add to the qualty of the characters. Remarkably, they succeeded, when they could easly have detracted from or marred the tremendous ease: Shakespearan were great as they wheeledabout the prose rolled off her as tongue she mmcked her sutors wth an excellent use of hand and body gestures. As the plot proceeds, two of her sutors arrve and, due to condtons n her father's wll, must choose one of three caskets (gold, slver, and lead), the correct one leadng to Porta's hand n marrage. A Moorsh Prnce, played by Rcardo Scpo, was sutably stately n flowng robes, sword and knfe on posed ether sde of hs belt. A character who seemed to be holdng hs emotons barely n check, Scpo faled to speak clearly several tmes, and lost hold of hs character brefly when he read stage twrlng umbrellas, fllng the audence n on what was gong on, agan n too much darkness. t should be mentoned that Launcelot Gobbo, played by Kevn was successful. Bottomley, Hghly exuberant, from end to bouncng end of the stage, he preferred to speak to the audence rather than at them. The second act of the play moved far more swftly than the frst, as few blatant scene changes allowed the audence to be engrossed as the varous plot threads were ted together. A sngle table and several chars made up the court scene, upon whch the crux of the play producton. The on performance opened Danca West's remarkably stark set; Dorc columns wth movablebarrers to denote scenechanges were rased at the rear of a twolevel stage. Arstocratc gentlemen, Antonoand Bassano, lolled about the stage wearng bathrobes as though they were smokng ackets; a sngle whte table, upon whch rested a champagne galss, formed the center of attenton, as Bassano planned to restore hs fortune n order that he mght marry the beautful Porta. Antono offers to borrow money from a loanshark n Vence, and the wheels of the plot are set n moton. Porta, n heavy demand by prospectve husbands, and her handmadensall appeared n smple, late Vctoran ther grab; har approprately done up n buns they dscussed some of the more eccentrc qualtes of Porta's sutors (brought on n the form of dated photographs a!! umbled up n a wheelbarrow). Pona, played by Janet Mon.d, handled herself wth Porta's "gold" scroll. Lan Wrght, playng Aragon, was splendd the Prnce of as a tpsy talan, tossng glasses of lquor left and rght (caught perfectly eachtme by one of Porta's handmadens). Unfortunately, Wrght had a tendency to hde hs dcton from tmeto tme beneath hs moustache. Mchael Fletcher's greedy Shylock, the wealthy Jewsh loanshark, gave both breadth and depth to the evenng's performance. Dressed n an ancent blue and whte strped shawl, wellworn sut, and dusty skullcap, Shylock came forth magnfcently; dstngushed n a mserly fashon, wth ust enough of an accent (growng stronger under extreme emoton) to be notceable wthout delberate camp, he managed to rd hs character of the ar that preudced tends to surround hm n many Merchant productons. The producton was masque scene of the not especally wel! handled, as t took place n ust too much dmness to be really apprecated. Saero and Soeno depends. Balffs, dressed as beadles, were almost an encumberance, used to a mnor extent to quell the "crowd" n the courtroom. Shylock was excellent, frst rghteously demandng hs nfamous pound of flesh, then resoundngly defeated by the dsgused Porta's legal wheedlng; Fletcher receved a resoundng ovaton from the audence for hs performance. Gratano, played by Sean Dxon, was excellent n hs dmnutve ragng at Shylock. Both Porta and Nerssa (Elzabeth Shannon) receved approval from the audence as n dsguse they obtaned ther lovers' rngs, from whch Bassano and Gratano had sworn never to part. The play ended on an uplftng note, as we everyone, assume, w lve happly ever after. Despte, or perhaps as a result of, un.ususl costumng, 0 of Ws performance was fathful to the text, and managed at the same tme to retan ts ndvdualty bravo.
