"Once we got nto a real lfe stuaton "Baker explans "t was just phenomenal. Wnnpeg s tradtonally such a conservatve cty that we were surprsed wth how well t went over." The most obvous queston to ask of a servce that provdes the farthest-out n far-out and the most unbeleveable n unbelevable s: Where do you fnd people to do all these crazy stunts? Says Baker proudly "we have contacts everywhere. There s about 50 people dong stunts for us rght now. Surprsngly they aren't all "Red-Rver-Beer-Bash crasher" types ether. "We have people n ther 50's and 60's helpng us out who just want a good tme every now and then." The talent behnd Scheme- A-Dream s pad $5 per stunt to be crazy and f they work all day they receve a specal rate. May of ther stuntpeople have full-tme jobs. They provde servces occasonally to have a good tme. Although Scheme-A-Dream uses classfed ads to round up ts talent they also have people comng n off the street offerng ther specalty servces. Rght now Scheme-A- Dream s workng on a Valentne's Day Specal. They're promotng vsts from cupd to a loved one for $9.99. And f you don't thnk that a man dressed n a whte daper and red tghts wearng wngs s funny wat untl you see the promo-cupd dashng down Portage Avenue advertsng the St. Vtal's Valentne's Day Specal ---wearng nothng but the scanty cupd attre. "you should see them when they see upd handng out promotonal brochures. People are just amazed." On Valentne's Day Baker estmates a cupd wlll have ten calls to make. For fve to ten cupds that's alot of house calls. We've sent upd to weddngs too usually on request from the brde. upd brought these two together so they're not really marred untl upd makes an appearance." Ths s the same cupd who wears red tghts a daper and carred a bow and arrow. But s there anythng a company who caters to dreams won't do? S Hc Tueday February "We don't do strppers. We get alot of calls from people who want strppers at a prvate party. We'll just refer them to someone else." "Once someone asked for a baby elephant. There wasn't one n Wnnpeg but we could have got one from Montreal. The clent wasn't wllng to pay to have the elephant shpped from Montreal so we couldn't do the stunt." Scheme-A-Dream s a twoperson offce whch presently handles everythng from orderng paper-clps and wrtng songs for stunts to marketng and advertsng technques. " dressed up as a can-can grl once" Baker recalls and catered to a man. t's crazy."?444- '.. s' ' have a recepton area a receptonst to handle smaller stunts such as gorllas and sngng telegrams leavng the Executve free to concentrate on larger stunts and promotonal detals. Movng out of ther 8 feet by 4 feet offce (est.) may also see Keth Rogerson workng n the offce as well as performng stunts n the afternoon when t's awkward to get hold of someone at short notce. "We're thnkng of franchsng rght now. Our name sn't that well known yet so we're sellng a concept not a name." Dean Bye was recently n algary. ' The Busness Admnstraton course. took was one of the best 'd ever taken. 'm always lookng back n my books. And the course we all hated Report Wrtng turned out to be one of the most valuable.' And Scheme-A-Dream s growng. Because ot ts success n Wnnpeg Baker and Bye have recently decded to expand. They have hred a new man Keth Rogerson to learn management procedures n Wnnpeg whch wll leave Baker and Bye free to travel to Edmonton and algary to set up offces there. Scheme-A-Dream's expanson ncludes a larger offce located on Donald Street. Snce they presently rent offce space n Malabar's premses they wll have to forfet the convenence of havng ther costume rentals rght next door. But the new offce wll Baker predcts that the company wll hre a manager for Edmonton. Settng up an offce and tranng a manager would nvolve ether Baker or Bye movng for sx months to a year. Fortunately there s nothng qute lke Scheme-A- Dream out west. Edmonton provdes no servces comparable but algary has two. - One company caters strctly to the elte whle the other caters strctly n food. There's alot of ground n between that leaves the market wde open for Scheme-A-Dream. "We wll provde caterng servces too" Baker says "but our specalty s crazy stunts." Snce Malabar's s the only costume rental n Wnnpeg and the largest n anada Scheme-A-Dream rents costumes for ther stunts drectly wth Malabars. And they wll contnue to be Scheme-A-Dream's costume source although they have no contract wth the costume rental. Before expandng to Vancouver or out East they are gong to wat and see how the operaton wll work as a three-offce stuaton. 'One of the problems we wll have though" ctes Baker "s that n other anadan centres there aren't outlets the sze of Wnnpeg's to rent costumes from." That leaves branches of Scheme-A-Dream unable to boast the large selecton of servces that Wnnpeg does. But Baker doesn't see the problem as one that wll shut down operatons. "Wth enough notee costumes can be flown out of Wnnpeg" to satsfy someone's comcal whm n Edmonton. "f t's a last mnute stunt though we'd just have to offer them somethng else." Scheme-A-Dream dressed a cupd and sent hm over to support Joe lark when he addressed a luncheon at the Fort Rouge Legon entre. upd was wearng a sgn that read "upd's shootng for you Joe." On the average Scheme-A- Dream puts together three or four stunts per day. They also make publc appearances for promotonal gmmcks at poltcal rallys. They sent Santa laus to see Trudeau at hrstmas when he was n town wth a present from a clent. The only problem Baker cted n these stuatons s that the poltcal fgures' agents won't let a stunperson near them. n promotng Scheme-A- Dream tself the company reles on promotonal gmmcks such as makng appearances at publc ralles and havng a half-dressed upd parade down Portage Avenue carryng Scheme-A- Dream promo's. They also ncorporate rado advertsements nto ther company promoton and buy space n T.V. ude. Baker says they're also plannng on advertsng n a new Wnnpeg publcaton called "The Downtowner." The "dream-weavers" may even be provdng advertsng servces of ther own soon says Bran Baker. A new medum for advertsers n Wnnpeg the hot-ar balloon wll soon be avalable f thngs go as planned. f the owner of the balloon leases hs servces out of Scheme-A-Dream he wll be provdng banner advertsng (on a by 40 foot banner) for $500. But there's more to ths brds eye vew of the cty than meets the eye. Besdes advertsng Scheme- A-Dream wll book tours of Wnnpeg from the balloon for $50. For an addtonal $5 pasengers can go frst class wth a champagne flght. Baker eagerly adds " mght even take that one myself." a gan ;s: Student Orentator netprgggtor Swag tk. csaloos ftrat_- sbenboowor r So 0 0 st a.44:444r M.) e Prjector Red Rver ommunty ollege Student Newspaper Under the over Ed. SA boycotts all polcy- makng commttees by Bll McLeod Student councl voted last. week to wthdraw all student representaton from commttees wthn the college nvolvng admnstratve personnel. The move was taken as a show of support for the 4 students who had been termnated for nonpayment of tuton fees and to brng the serousness of councl's opposton to the termnaton polcy to the attenton of the college admnstraton. `The government has shown utmost dsrespect to the students of ths college by not examnng by Penn Mtchell or respectng our opnons' sad SA presdent Dave hurch. 'The ssue here s not only the 4 termnated students but our opnons beng gnored by government.' The wthdrawal of student representaton means that students wll no longer have nput nto such bodes as the food servces commttee the athletc hoard and the academc councl. hurch reterated that termnaton s too harsh a penalty for late payment. `t's puttng someone on Unemployment deprvng them of ther educaton and wastng an empty seat n a classroom not to menton the other effects on the student.' Mantoba s the only provnce n anada whose communty colleges enforce a polcy of termnaton for non-payment of tuton fees. The regulaton states that any students who haven't pad ther fees fve calendar days after regstraton can be termnated. Ths rule has never been enforced n the past unless the student showed no nterest n the course and had stopped attendng classes. The Western feldworker wth the Natonal Unon of Students Bran Bedford was at last Tuesday's councl meetng. He sad that he knew of no other nsttuton whch operated wth a Axworthy speaks at RR "What possesses men and women to leap over snow drfts at electon tme gong door to door to talk to voters?" Lloyd Axworthy Lberal MP from Fort Rouge asked ths queston Wednesday durng hs noon hour speech at Red Rver. The answer accordng to Axworthy s that Lberals are unsatsfed wth onservatveproposals and polces. n Mantoba "the fundng avalable for educaton should be ncreased. The Mantoba government should be more reponsble on ts manpower and educaton polces" Axworthy sad. He also feels that the Lberals can stmulate Mantoba's economy whch he says s the bggest problem facng Mantoba rght now. Axworthy had harsh words about the lark government especally ther energy polcy and the proposed budget. "The 8-cent excse tax on gaslne had nothng to do wth energy. The conservatves need the revenue to pay for ther mortgage program whch wll beneft only 30 percent of anadans." He called the budget "unfar" sayng that "Mr. rosbe wanted us to pull n our belts so tght that Ed's comng by Bll McLeod Ed Broadbent wll be speakng at RR Thursday n the South ym. He s expected to speak for an hour on NDP polces wth specal relevance to the student. Ed Broadbent frst sought electon to the House of ommons n 968 beatng the P canddate by only 5 votes. Snce then he has always had a large margn. Broadbent was elected charman of the NDP polcy revew commttee at the 969 federal conventon. As a result of the experence he wrote THE LBERAL RP-OFF n 970 a crtque of the government under Perre Ellot Trudeau. Broadbent - feels that the federal and provncal governments should share the cost of educaton equally benefttng the we could have our crculaton cut off." Axworthy could not offer the many questoners an answer as to what a reasonable gas hke would be but defended the Lberal stand sayng "t would be rresponsble to gve you a fxed prce. We want to negotate a blended prce." "We need a responsble body to handle Petroan...the onservatve government had no guarantee that the mult-natonal ol companes would be renvestng ther profts n energy. That's why we ddn't vote n favor of the budget." Axworthy also a tacked the onservatve polcy on the crss n Quebec sayng that they have been hdng ther heads n the sand whenever the problem caomes up. "lark has avoded hs responsbltes wth the problem...the Lberals are prepared to change government programs n Quebec." Axworthy suggested that the government has to look at ts defense natonal dplomacy and economy n dealng wth the ran rss. "That ran rss wll not go away just. because we boycott the Olympcs" he sad. The Lberal government under Trudeau nvested n ar-crafts for defence purposes bought tanks from ermany and dveloped new arcraft programs wtht he ar students by keepng the quatyvof educaton at a hgh standard. Braodbent wll be accompaned by two busloads of the natonal meda and fve RMP offcers to guard hm. SA Presdent Dave hurch wll ntroduce hm. termnaton penalty for nonpayment of fees. `At the most' he stated `other nsttutons hold back dplomas and lbrary and gym facltes but no other nsttuton 've heard of kcks out students.' The SA wll end the boycott when t s satsfed that the admnstraton wll act to ensure that termnaton wll not be used n the future as a means of punshment for non-payment of tuton fees. Some councllors voced fears that not attendng commttee meetngs wll leave the admnstraton wth the ablty to make any changes t feels lke makng wthn the college. `f we Lloyd Axworthy took tme out from leapng over snowbanks to speak to students last Wednesday. tell the admnstraton that we're no longer gong to partcpate n the runnng of the college they mght just say `ood!' sad sports drector Joe Durzo. SA vce-presdent Darrell Drver ponted out that the admnstraton could rase food prces n the absence of student opposton. An ad hoc commttee consstng of two SA executves three student councllors and one student representatve was formed' to negotate wth the admnstraton. Students to meet wth Admnstraton by Patrca Myketa An ad hoc commttee was formed at the student councl meetng last Tuesday to negotate wth the admnstraton re alterng the polcy for termnaton for non-payment of tuton fees. The commttee--consstng of SA executves Dave hurch and Joe Durzo councllors hrs Moore Scott Sheppard Rck Borlase and Al Harve plus student Mchael Balagus--met last week and drew up a set of sx proposals desgned to elmnate the dsadvantages ncurred by both students and college admnstrators when outrght termnaton s enforced. The proposed soluton would see a one-week perod of 'grace' from the day of regstraton followng whch a late fee of $0 per week would accumulate over the next fve weeks. f the student has not made contact wth the college regardng payment after that tme a letter wll be sent to the student ndcatng that he s no longer n good standng and that the tuton and late fees must be pad f the student wshes to be renstated. f the student has not pad or f satsfactory arrangements for payment have not been made the student may then be termnated. The ad hoc commttee met yesterday wth college drector Bran Angood and the assstant deputy mnster n charge of communty colleges Peter Penner both of whom had no comment to make last week on the stuaton as t stood. forces. Students to vote on NUS by Patrca Myketa Red Rver students wll vote February 7 on whether the college wll become a full member of the Natonal Unon of Students ( NUS). Red Rver s currently a prospectve member of the organzaton. NUS encompasses college and unversty student unons across anada. NUS provdes representaton for students n such ssues as tuton fee ncreases and student ad by way of reports and studes lobbyng and wrtng letter to governmental and educatonal offcals vocng student opnon on current ssues of mportance to students. Two representatves from NUS addressed the student councl meetng held' last Tuesday. Max Johnson from the U of M and treasurer of NUS and Bran Bedford Western feldworker brefly outlned the benefts of NUS membershp. Johnson sad that n the case of the current stuaton regardng the termnaton of students for non-payment of tuton fees for nstance NUS could step n to provde background nforamton as to the polces of other nsttuatons reports and studes on the subject of tuton fees and possble support from other NUS member student assocatons. NUS has already been actvely nvolved for the nterests of Red Rver students. When the college's varsty teams were barred from natonal compettons NUS wrote the natonal governng body and suggested that the Rebels be allowed to reach the natonals through Saskatchewan. Needless to say the request was turned down. n terms of servces drectly to student servce afflate the Assocaton of Student ouncls (AOS). (The dentty ards wll be on sale agan at Red Rver n the near future.) NUS s also n the process of mplementng a student nsurance plan. Ths s stll n the development stage. The cost of jonng NUS s $.00 per student per year.

Another ollege Starrng: The Ad Hoc ommttee. Formed at the last councl meetng these hardy adventurers set out to change the face of termnatons at Red Rver. Out of a smoke-flled room n the wee hours came a set of proposals handed over to the Admnstraton (see below) at a meetng yesterday afternoon. The proposals are reasonable and sensble. They are workable: You'll know next week how they went over. Watch ths space. The Admnstraton.. Played by college drector Bran Angood and the assstant deputy mnster n charge of communty colleges Peter Penner they met wth the Ad Hoc ommttee yesterday (see above). You'll know next week how they reacted. Watch ths space. The Boycott. Effectve February there wll no longer be any students sttng on commtees where they would encounter admnstraton types. t's an organzed wthdrawal of student representaton whch wll mean that there wll not be nput and deas from students on such commttees as food servces the athletc board the commttee organzng the upcomng Open House the athletc board and so on. Dependng on the commttee some could be rendered noperable by vrtue of ther not havng enough members to carry on wth. And n the starrng role: Student ouncl. They voted n favor of the Boycott (see above). They gave the Ad Hoc commttee the mandate to negotate wth the admnstraton to hash out a more acceptable means of student fee collecton. They made a good move t says here. By vrtue of ts decson councl s sayng that t's not about to le down and take the termnaton of twelve of ts populaton at face value. ouncl s showng the chutzpuh to challenge an outdated college polcy and to queston the admnstraton's sudden penchant for enforcng t. ouncl s sayng to ts twelve 'termnatees' 'Hey we thnk they were wrong for throwng you out of school. We know t's probably too late to get you back n but we're fghtng to make sure that what happened to you doesn't happen agan n the future.' These twelve students are gettng a voce from ther elected representatves. That's the bottom lne of what beng a councllor s all about. There can be no queston of ther turnng back now. Of course you may ask 'Well why s councl gong to bat for a bunch of people who were careless about an mportant responsblty? Now that they've had to pay the prce for t why should anyone worry about them?' Why? Because beng kcked out of school for ANY reason s the worst possble thng that can happen to a student. For Red Rver students t means dsruptng an educaton n md-stream postponng future fulltme employment and a loss of potental earnng power. t means gong on Unemployment nsurance provdng the student even qualfes n the frst place. t means fndng a job for a year but who'll hre someone knowng that they'll be quttng soon to go back to school? t means forkng out even more money next year (0 per cent ncrease remember?) and because books become obsolete almost annually now t means buyng a few more of those too. f the student had ntentons of droppng out anyways then that's fne. ase closed. But f the student s serous about hs educaton and wants to contnue he shouldn't be booted out at the frst opportunty that comes along. Sure you can say 'Well f they're supposed to be serous about ther educaton why ddn't they make sure t was pad for?' The answer s smple. Termnaton has never been carred out before so why should ths partcular term have been.any dfferent? Sure you read the regulaton n the student handbook that says nonpayment after one week means bye-bye but by the tme the computer catches up wth the late-payers so much tme has gone by that the student fgures that snce nothng has happened yet nothng ever wll happen and there's stll tme to pay the tuton. Ths atttude s so frmly entrenched n the mnds of students at Red Rver that even the letters threatenng termnaton weren't taken serously. So that tells you somethng about the system already. f the student gets ht where t hurts the most n the wallet and f there was a defnte day-month-year deadlne for payment t would shake a few more people up. As t stands there s no motvaton for students to pay up on tme and untl now no reason for them to worry about any consequences. There are those who argue that boycottng was a hastly-made decson and one that they may lve to regret but there are those who wll argue that ths move wll make those n hgher places pay attenton to a stuaton that s detrmental to the students and to the college. There's more of ths to come next week. Don't touch that dal! - by Bob Armstrong None of your Busness but Let's talk about sexsm. 'm sure we've all heard enough by now about the Mss Amerca contest and the frng of Bert Parks a:: emcee and crooner. We've all heard about Johnny arson's cut "We Want Bert" campagnbut wth all ths publcty and controversy perhaps we have overlooked the real ssue. The real ssue s not whether Bert Parks gets to sng that famous song to the wnner of the annual meat lne. The ssue s whether a contest lke the Mss Amerca contest should even be held n ths alededly enlghtened age. submt that t should not: To take a human beng at face value to measure that human beng's contrbuton to socety n terms of a bathng sut contest s to me an unspeakable act. And so before ths annual event that parades young women n front of a panel and several mllon televson vewers lke cattle at an aucton takes place would lke to be offcally recorded as sayng wll not stand for t arty longer. Now sure you may say "What are you gong to do about t?" ndeed that s a far queston. t may not seem that a colutnst for a weekly college paper somewhere n the wnderness of the subartc can do much to keep the networks and ther sponsors from holdng ths event. However f 000 or 0000 or columsats for obscure weekly newspapers all showed ther dspleasure that would mean somthng. No ssue n ths campagn provdes a better showcase for the essental poltcal phlosophes of the three major partes or provdes sounder ground on whch to base a vote February 8. onservatve energy polcy stems largely from ther fath n the ngenuty and drve of the prvate sector of anadan socety the need for fnancal responsblty on the part of all anadans and the benefts of reducng our dependence on foregn ol. The NDP "made n anada" energy platform s based on ncreased government nvolvement n energy ndustres ncreased corporate taxes and ncreased expentures n the areas of research and conservaton. of Lberals the most reluctant of the three to reveal a concrete polcy favour slghtly ncreased government nvolvement and hgher corporate taxes then the onservatves but lower taxes than the NDP. The queston of government nvolvement n the development purchasng and sales of petroleum products s beng dealth wth through dfferent models for Petroanada a crown corporaton establshed by the Lberals n 974. At the tme of ts ncepton. Petroan was.supposed to renforce the natonsnterests n the multnatonal domnated ndustry. n ts bref hstory t has been most actve n northern exploraton the offshore potental of Newfoundland Labrador and Nova Scota. and the Tar Sands projects n Alberta. onservatve polcy on Petroan has changed drastcally snce the last electon campagn. Last sprng lark called for the dsmantlng of the crown corporaton. After comng to power a task force was struck to advse the government on whch of the corporatons' assets should be sold to the prvate sector. The task force recommended that the proft makng aspects of the corporaton be sold and that shares n the remanng projects be gven to the general publc free of charge. Just before hrstmas lark announced a new approach where Petroan would become a "sem-prvate" corporaton: Half of the shares would be gven to anadan ctzens 0 percent would be offered for sale to the prvate sector and 30 percent would be retaned by the federal ndustry and would be contracted by the federal government n exploraton ventures and ol and gas deals wth other countres. The Lberals are as crtcal of ths arrangement as they have been of ts two predecessors. The Lberals would retan Petrocan as a wholly owned crown corpora t on. Petroan was establshed accordng to the Lberals because prvate ndustry was preoccuped wth proft not wth the long-term exploraton needs of the country and f t ncorporated a shareholder system the potental of Petroan would be undermned by the conflct between the proft goal of the shareholders and our natonal need for exploraton n hgh rsk areas of our ol and gas potental. The Lberals would have Petroan make all of the naton's petroleum deals. They contend that petroleum prces can be kept down f only one company s bddng for foregn ol for anada. Energy : the great dvder overnment nvolvement n the petroleum ndustry Perre and Joe offer you a choce The New Democratc Party s callng for a Petroan wth ncreased partcpaton n all aspects of ol and gas exploraton refnement and nternatonal sales. Broadbent wants Petroan to be the number one "ol busness" n anada by 985 ( t s presently anada's eghth largest ol company). The NDP would extend Petroan's retal operatons across the country and ssue credt cards to help expand ts busness. The NDP lke the Lberals want Petroan to make all of anada's mport and export deals. Expanson of Petroan's nvolvement n the Ol Sands Projects n Alberta and the refnng secton of the ndustry would also take place' under an NDP government. The onservatve Party s the only party that has put general prcng polces nto real fnancal terms. A onservatve government would stand by ts decson to ncrease domestc ol prces by four dollars a barrel ths year and by four dollars and fftycents a barrel per year thereafter untl our domestc prces are equvalent to 85 percent of the prce of ol n the Unted States. A onservatve government would ntroduce a new - energy tax whereby all revenues resultng from prce ncreases of over two dollars a barrell would go to the federal government. Under the present arrangement 45 per cent of the prce ncreases to the provncal overnment 45 per- cent to the company and 0 percent to the federal government. Under the new onservatve plan these revenues wll go nto a new anadan energy bank or towards the subsdzaton of other projects. The onservatves have also proposed an 8 cent per gallon excse tax on gas consumpton. Perre Trudeau and the Lberals cannot gve an exact fgure on the rse n ol prces that we could expect under a Lberal government but they do say that the ncreases would be smaller and more gradual than those proposed by the onservatves. The Lberalswould arrve at a fnal prce after negotatng wth the producng and consumng provnces of anada as they dd when they formed the government. The NDP does not offer a new domestc prce for ol ether. They recognze the nevtablty of prce ncreases but thnk that a federal commsson to control ol prces and profts should advse the government on acceptable proft margns at every stage of the ndustry and ol prces would be adusted accordngly. Under > Ol ompany Profts an NDP government no ncrease n corporaton profts from prce ncreases would be allowed untl ths commsson has an opportunty to consder the present proft levels of the ndustry. Ths however does not mean that ncreases could not happen under an NDP government wth the extra revenue gong to Petroan provncal government or federal coffers. Producton of heavy ol n the tar sands developments should be provded to anadans at cost. The NDP and Lberal partes have comdemned the onservatve 8 cents a gallon excse tax on gas because of the effect that t wll have on lower ncome groups and transportaton ndustres. The Tores clam that the heavest burden of the excse tax wll not fall on these groups due to ther proposed $80 per adult and $30 per chld users r olt. N ; 0.0; f OA. rebate for famles that make less than $000 per year and ther 0 cents per gallon rebate to commercal users of gasolne. f elected the NDP would cancel the onservatve government's recent approval of the a lcense for the export of 3.75 trllon cubc feet of natural gas to the Unted States. They feel the new lcense whch wll ncrease our natural gas exports to the Unted States by 40 percent could undermne anada's energy future. The Lberals feel that the onservatve government made the decson to grant the lcence wthout lookng closely enough at the consequences of the move. The Lberals also thnk that the grantng of the lcence should have been part of a package deal whch would have guaranteed that the gas wold be shpped va a anadan ppelne. The Tores stll feel confdent that anada has a surplus of gas n the ground. The revenue generated by the sale s substantal enough to warrent the rsk and s mportant n ther general fscal responsblty platform. All three of the major partes are callng for ncreased conservaton measures to ensure our energy future. The Lberals would undertake a $.4 bllon home nsulaton grant program' for anadan householders a removal of the federal sales tax on home nsulaton and contnue strct conservaton measures wthn government operatons. The onservatves feel that the ncrease n the cost of ol wll help force anadans to be conservaton mnded. That s also one of the onservatve ratonales for puttng the extra 8 cent tax on gas. They would also have strct conservaton standards wthn government a ences.

Dom Deluse s hung up on food n `Fatsos. tterarp Rebtetu by Dan Tervoort THE BBLE rght now the top best-seller of all tme s a tedous work by an overndulgent lterary hack who rvals Harold Robbns and Jacquelne Susann n the producton of sheer sleaze. Ths book has been labelled a "masterpece" by some a "classc" by others and "a work of art to rval Shakespeare" by a poor deluded New York columnst whose judgement s marred by a severe bran dsease. Unfortunately the sttled prose style and lack of strong dentfable characters makes THE BBLE at best. a good quck read n the ven Of JAWS. The man deas or plot of THE BBLE s nothng but a bla tent rp-off of Alex Haley's best-sellng ROOTS n that t concerns tself wth the tracng of the generatons of the two ntroductory characters Adam and Eve. THE BBLE s chock full of gratutous volence and scenes of sex for sex's sake. The openng scenes of the novel deal wth a nude man and woman ( unmarred as far as could tell ) lvng n sn n a garden hdeaway. Ths s very objectonable for a novel classfed as "famly readng." The book s also full of needless scenes of explotve blood and gore. Multple beatngs sacrfces murders stonngs and a new orgnal method of torture known as crucfcton pervade the entre book n blunt Mckey-Spllane-type style. One almost expects Mke Hammer to appear from a darkened alley and pull out hs "roscoe" and take care of the evl Ramses. haracterzaton s hardly adequate. The man character od s portrayeed wth lttle or no characterzaton and therefore he does not appear to be belevable. The son of ths character Jesus s portrayed as somewhat of a sant wth all good characterstcs and no bad ones to balance out the character. He comes across as a cardboard stereotype rather than a flesh and blood beng. The book s also flled wth numerous nconsstences that make the gongs-on hard to swallow. On one hand the book makes a pont of puttng down ncest but on the other hand f Adam and Eve were the frst and only people on Earth who could ther sons mate wth but ther mother? On one hand od s a knd benevolent beng but on the other he wpes out the entre planet except for Noah. t s rumoured that the book s gong to become the next n lne of $40 mllon scence fcton spectaculars. The specal effects (ggantc floods plagues partng seas burnng bushes that talk) should be able to pull n the kds whle the excessve sex and volence wll be sure to attract the DRTY HARRY devotees. The dance musc and fun captured not only the magnatons of the chldren present but also captvated the large adult sector of the audence: Snow oose s a chldrens fantasy whch follows a young grl on a journey through a marsh where she comes upon a wounded snow goose. Along the way she encounters a colorful entourage of characters consstng of a mysterous Freddy Fox (Francsco Alvarez) a tortose and hare ( Mark hambers and Marlyn Rderman) Buzzy Bee ( Ruth ansfeld) Jester ( Davd Holmes Jr.) and Dsco Duck (Tedd Robnson). Heather the young grl was played by ale Petursson-Hley. D-Anne Kuby was the Snow oose. The show was choreographed by Stephane Ballard who has been assocated wth the ontemporary Dancers for several years. The company has had great responses from the Snow oose whch was performed on ther November 979 western tour and ther recent tours of Wnnpeg schools. The musc accompanyng the dance showed ncredble varety rangng from the Teddy Bears' pcnc and Dsco Duck to Frank Snatra and Jeanette MacDonald. Also on the program was a. work choreographed by Rachel Browne Artstc Drector. 'Songs and Dances' s set to the musc of Odetta and moves through chldren's game songs and flrtatous romps to rousng gospel. 'onstructon ompany' a dance of foot-stompng fun choreographed by Stephane Ballard and set to the musc of anadan composer Andre agnon was also presented. 94 s a schlock epc by Bll McLeod 94 s the knd of schlock epc whch would take my threeyear-old son to see f had one because that s the level of ntellgence needed to enjoy ths pcture. t s a staggerng dsappontment after the hlarous Anmal House whch starred the same man characters. Off The Record by Robyn Osemlak As the new decade begns to unwnd we have many mlestones to mark. Already. Opus ded last year. Ths year t s Autumn Stone. Yes t's true. Autumn Stone s gong under. By the end of ths month Wnnpeg's hallowed long har and short har muscal servce wll be defunct. To quote there's no room for the samll busnessman. One can't really say that t marks a trend. But another of Wnnpeg's more progressve record stores s also on the sellng block--records on Wheels. t looks lke we'll be left wth the more "chart-orented sales outlets but there are one or two record stores that do show promse." Another small mlestone we can mark s the use of the B5's & Jean Mchael Jarre's Oxygene n Eaton's fashon ads. Next tme you're n the store check t out. ould t possbly mean the total acceptance of new wave by busness establshments?? But we forget...new Wave s passe. old Wave s where t's at. The 3nd NHL All-Star game proved to be as entertanng as any hockey game could be. At least n the mnds of hockey fans. An ar of electrcty swept through the Detrot arena as the world's oldest professonal hockey player skated onto the ce. You guessed t-- none other than orde Howe. The fans patently awated the three star selecton. ampbells star Reg Leach deservedly receved the Most Valuable Player award.
