They always SOllrrJ omnous even to the senors! Freshmen especally have our sympathy. They could be seen at sundry spots n the "Ad" buldng quzzng the upperclassmen and starng bugeyed as they were told long and sad tales of the multtudnous D's and E's annually handed out - of proctors stalkng about the room countng off the moments as you st btng your pencl - of sheet nfter sheet of mmeograph paper beng handed out wth just thousands of pecular and trcky questons farly poppng off the pages. Schedule Roundup After hearng all ths the freshmen were slghtly dzzy and sck and were apt to stagger to the bulletn board for dverson and consolaton, vanly hopng to read about a comng dance or a comng tea. Horrors! What met ther eye nstead! The Exam Schedule! Oh Golly Gee! Out came the pencls. The crowd grew bgger and bgger as sghs and groans and moans re-echoed up and down the corrdor. All ths was too much for one day, for exams were a realty not somethng nebulous off n the dstance. t really wasn't as bad as t seemed. Nothng ever s. Or s t? The fear of thngs s far "vorse than the actualty, so they say. (contnued on page 6) Palestne Stuaton Dscussed by Rev. Hunter The Rev. Davd R. Hunter, secretary of the Department of Chrstan Educaton, delvered an nterestng and nformatve lecture to the faculty and students of Brdgewater Teachers College on Tuesday, January 13, 1948, n the Horace Mann audtorum. The Rev. Hunt~r, who has recently returned from a vst to Palestne, s well qualfed to speak on the subject, "Wll the Unted Natons Plan for Palestne Work?" He went to Palestne, prncpally, to study the Arab sde of the Jewsh-Arab problem n Palestne as he felt that not enough w~s known about the Arabs n ths controversy. He sad that the Jewsh people had been more successful n havng ther sde of the queston presented to the Amercan publc. After makng an unbased survey, and studyng both sdes of the queston wth mpartal judgment, the Rev. Hunter sad he s defntely pro-jewsh. " ddn't see anythng n Palestne whch contradcted n the slghtest any of the pretentous clams made by the Jews n t.hs country. No Englshman or Amercan who has vsted Palestne can deny that the mprovements n Palestne have been phenomenal." -e explaned that the Jewsh populaton s n favor of mprovng Palestne and makng t a progressve country. (contnued on page 3) AD TO EUROPE Last weeks assembly program took up and presented the problem of ad to E mope through CARE. XX, NO.5 RATES: $1.30 A YEAR Be ndependent Today, more than at any other tme, we are subjected to all forms of hgh pressure salesmanshp. Our personal opnons, our codes of lvng, and the forms of recreaton we follow are largely the result of someone else's effort and thought. We all recognze the need of conventon n relaton to our as: socaton wth other people but we do not and we must not let our opnons of the current ssues before us be drummed nto us by a small group of people wth an axe to grnd. Whether the queston s one of natonal mportance such as Unversal Mltary Tranng or one as relatvely mnor as the polcy of a college club, we should look at both sdes of the questons and judge the facts avalable on ther own strength. To prove ths contenton, just turn your rado on, pck up your daly paper, lsten to the arguments on the street corner, and last but not least, lsten to yourself as you talk. How many of the deas you expressed today are your own and how many are from the daly press, the rado, or a magazne you have read? Naturally, we can't all see thngs frst hand, and we all can't be authortes on the current events except through readng and lstenng but we should be dscrmnatng n what we read and what we accept as fact, and what we know s fcton. Do you lve n a world of the frst person sngular or the frst person pural? One of the basc needs of man s the need of new experences to round out hs lfe. The experences can O)ly come through a mnglng of actvtes and nterests n every phase of lvng. The rough edges of a stone are worn away by the constant droppng of water, and the rough facets of our personaltes are worn by constant contacts wth other people. Here n Brdgewater, as well as any other place, ths process of growng s n progress. We can keep to ourselves and enjoy a quet uneventful college career or we can get out and be a real part of college socety and broaden our outlook by partcpatng n the dversons offered away from the classroom. Board Meet the board - W. A. A. Board, that s, perhaps some of you have wondered just who or what s responsble for the women's extra-currcular athletcs on the Brdgewater Teacher's College campus. Take a look at the above pcture and you wll get an dea of \vhat makes \V.A.A. (\Ve Avd Athletcs) tck. f you are dssatsfed wth the sports offered or the manner n whch they are presented, there are the grls to see. They form the nucleus of the board. Ffteen actvty drectors wth the members of the physcal educaton faculty a', advsers, form the complete board. The offcers are elected by the students and try to represent your opnons. Let them know what you want and they wll do ther best for you. Every organzaton needs a good leader and we have one n Dot Lews, our presdent. Dot s a senor, majors n physcal educaton and lkes all sports, especally basketball n whch she s very profcent. Her job requres tme, patence, and plenty of work. \\lth cooperaton, Dot and the board have planned a lvely and vared program ths year. Ther hard work s payng oh n bg dvdends. Dot was basketball drector last year. Frst vce presdent, n charge of cuttng capers (socal actvtes to the novce) s Gen Powers. Gen, a senor, majorlg n Englsh, has always partcpated n sports, preferrng basketball and softball. She plans socal events snch as teas, varous and sundry partes and the annual \V.A.A. banquet, besdes actvely helpng out other commttees. By the way, Gen was the All Amercan grl of her class last year n the Gym Jam and was softball drector last year. Actvty drectors need a drector and she s Jean Lttlefeld, second vce presdent. Jean, a senor physcal educaton major, s actve n sports and especally good n basketball and feld hockey. She has to help get the actvtes started and then keep track of them. The task of recordng the actvtes partcpated n by each grl falls to the recordng secretary, Helene O'Hara. A junor, majorng n scence, she has been actve n many sports and has served on numerous commttees. When t comes tme for awards Helene wll be busy checkng the lsts of people elgble for awards. She s also drector of archery. Clare Dans, a junor physcal educaton major, as correspondng secrebuy, keeps the attendance records and the mnutes of each b-monthly meetng. Her man nterest n sports has been modern dancng and archery, besdes, partcpatng n most of the others. The keeper of the treasnry s Barb MacDonald, a junor, and a scence major. Her all mportant duty s to sgn checks and keep us nformed about the state of the treasury. Barb enjoys all sports and lkes partcpatng n them. Her "lttle shadow" s Jean Grant, a sophomore and a scence major. Assstant treasurer ths year, Jean automatcally takes over treasurer's dutes next year. She s an ardent dscple of modern dance and s takng lessolls weekly n Boston. Publcty of varous sports s a necessty n \V.A.A. and we have a good "publctor" n Carol Schneder, a junor and an elementary major. Carol's artstc flar gves many of the less popular sports a "push". She was the All Amercan grl of her class last year. Basketball Banter Congratulatons to the \V.A.A. Board for placng basketball on the schedule for next quarter. Ths popular sport wll be ohered on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 4:40 to 5:40. The prescntly overcrowded schedule should be allevated some\vhat bv the absence of the senors who are tra~ng thrd quarter. Elane Doucette, Jean Campbell's able assstant, wll drect the games whle "Soupy" performs her dutes n the lttle red school house on the Campus. Congratulatons to Ardys Farnsworth on becomng a Natonal Rated Basketball Offcal. "Farnsy" s the second Brdgewater grl to obtan her "na~ tonals." Barbara Crocker earned hers last March. t s also adeu to Ardys, who leaves us at the end of the semester. The Tr-V team no\v holds undsputed clam to frst place n the ntramural standngs. Team Seven was toppled by the senor physcal educaton team. Prevous to ths defeat they \vere ted wth the Tr-V for top honors. Tentatve plans are beng formulated for a basketball play-day on the campus n March. t s very smple to go over to the gym, play basketball and meetng vctory or defeat, stll enjoy yourself. For the pcople who make the games possble, t s not so easy. The drector, offcals and faculty advsers spend arduous hours to make your recreaton pleasant. A specal note of apprecaton to Hortense Archambault, who has been offcal tmer and scorer for the majorty of games played n the past two years. Now when you see these grls on campus, you wll know who they are and what they do for W.A.A. Any complants or complments wll be cheerfully accepted by them au. RelllCl11 ber, ths s "your" organzaton. \\1 e want to please all. The physcal educaton professors s<.:rve as the board's advsers. Mss Caldwell gudes the actvty drectors and gves some sports a needed "push". Mss Decker has to approve money expendtures n her capacty as advser. j\'ss MerrO\v helps out wth extra actvtes shch as offcatng, playday commttees and general advce. Mss Morarty watches to make sure her "darlugs" don't have to partcpate n too many sports, as f that were possble. Tuesday \V cdncsc1ay Thursday Comng Actvtes ForW. A. A. The frst half of the wnter sport season s now completed. Roughly three hundred grls have partcpated to make the program successful. The sports have been vared enough to make the program nterestng and plable enough to meet the abltes of most grls on the campus. Ths cornng quarter, \V. A. A. offers another dfferent program. For those who \vould lke to mprove ther dancng and have fun, W. A. A. offers square dancng n the gym on Tuesday at 3:30 wth Paulne Pfko n charge. Modem Dance contnues as an actvty under the drecton of Marlyn Cuehlo. Because of a growng nterest n volleyball, t wll be offered on Wednesday afternoon. f the nterest warrants, t wll be offered as a co-recreatonal attracton on Frday afternoons. After some dscusson, W. 6 January 23, 1948 Westfeld Teachers Defeated \Vestfeld's nvason of the Boyden gym on Saturday, December 13, met wth defeat at the hands of the Andersson fve by The frst few seconds of the game saw Bob Teahan snk hs specalty, a long set shot. Ths was just the begnnng of eght mnutes of wld play. The opponents found t dffcult to penetrate the zone defense, but compensated for ths by makng long shots, endng the frst perod 12-8 n the black marauder's favor. The next quarter was slghtly better for the Red and Whte, but the shootng and the passwork stll much below par. Teahan, Sargent, Lemos, Douthart, Kudera, and F1anagan contrbuted ponts resultng n a score of for the home team. After the usual peptalk at halftme, the locals mproved ther tactcs to become the aggressors for the remanng two perods. Marsh Douthart made a fast lay-up shot durng ths tme. Both teams contnued to fght for supremacy whch was stll kept by Brdgewater at the sound of the whstle. The fnal score was The last ",quarter saw a clever assst by Rckey Sargent to Jm F1anagan, who made a fast layup, and then basket aded by Kudera. The crowd wtnessed and applauded the set shot and overhand hook shot drven to the mark by none other than the Hap. Ths game put thc game score for Brdgewater at three wns to two losses. The J. V.'s were delvered a beatng by the Brdgewater Hoboes on the same day. Thc game was fast, furous, and awkward for the most part, but mproved as both teams szed up each other. Although the challengng team won 37-31, ths tally fals to explan the loss for thc Jayvees. Both teams played wth about the same skll, but the "Lttle Fve" were undoubtedly not at ther best. Dennson captured honors by makng ten ponts, the top ponter for the squad. B. T. C. Loses To Superor Becker Club A rampagng squad of superor players representng Becker College trounced our amateur array at Wareester on December 8th. The score was The Red and Whte traveled to the B aston Garden on December 10, 1947, where they lost a "heartbreaker" to Keene Teachers' College by a score of The toll exacted by the Becker fasco showed clearly as our players exhbted a general lack of tmng and coordnaton whch allowed the Keene team to roll up a 12-4 lead n the frst quarter. mprovng n every department as the game progressed, Brdgewater outscored the attackers n the last three Textle Fve Downs Varsty Despte a fne dsplay of foul shootng, durng whch Bob Teahan regstered eght conversons out of nne attcmpts, the locals were defeated by an alert New Bedford Textle fve n a rough game played at New Bedford on January 8th. Led by Captan Bob Horowtz, who was capably asssted by the 16 pont contrbutons of Edde Foy and Al Morey, thc Textle team found lttle trouble n penetratng the Teachers' defence. Captan Edde Zon, Marsh Douthart and Bob Teahan sparked the bref offensve spurts whch fnally dd materalze as the game progressed. Joe Kudera's steady performance at hs squad post, prevented the opposton from turnng the fray nto a rout. The JayVees easly kept abreast of ther opponents untl second-half substtutons turned the tde and resulted n a 68 to 33 massacre. Between the halves, Jm Flanagan \vas the recpent of a gold basketball presentedto last year's successful New Bedford squad of whch he was a member. Salem Evens Up A vstng Salem aggrega ton was pushed to the lmt on January 15th by a valant Brdgewater fve but fnally trumphed by vrtue of a sngle basket scored n the last fve seconds of play. A np-anel-tuck battle ensued from the openng whstle and by the last chapter, t had narrowed elown to the offensve team of Ronald Courteau and Mke Karabatsos versus the scorng thrusts of a local combne consstng of Rcky Sargent and Joe Kuccra. t remaned for rangy Ronald Courtcau, the Salem center, to flp n the decdng basket whch avenged a defeat admnstered by B. The Spotlght On Sargent, Drscoll Our ncxt sketch ntroduces to you one of Brdgewater's fnest all-around athletes, Erck Sargent. Ths husky young dynamo comes from North Attleboro Hgh School where he partcpated n basketball, baseball, and football. Although best known for hs prowness on the grdron, Rcky also excelled as a member of hs hgh school's dramatc club. (Mr. Davoren-please note.) A two-year htch n the navy, durng whch he served wth the Amphbous force n the assault on Oknawa, falcd to take any of the aggressveness out of Rck. Ths fact s easly proved by smply observng Erck's fery performance n the soccer goal, on the basketball court, or on the baseball damond. Outsde of sports, Mr. Sargent s the spark~ plug behnd many of the publcty campagns at Brdgewater. After the "Masked Marvel Affar," we are all eagerly' awatng the gems of gcnus n regard to hs new duty as publcty drector of "Young Howard" for At ths pont, Rcky requested a plug for hs commercal enterprses, but, n as much as t s aganst the polcy of ths paper, we had to refuse. As for hs pet peeve, 'They don't let 'J.' out long The SllOtlght 011 Sargent am Dl'scoU enough; n fact, they don't let 7.' out enough; n fact, they don't let 'J.' out." Joseph Drscoll, newly elected presdent of the freshman class, s paradoxcally conspcuous by hs notceable quetness, almost demureness. t requred only a short whle to dscover why he was chosen to lead hs classmates. Mr. Drscoll s easly recognzable by a crop of brown har, a par of glasses that connotes the wearer s a student, a modest manner, and a frendly voce. Only these trats plus a dsgused personalty that wll bubble forth only when he s caught off guard, or after a fe\v mnutes of personal contact, could have gotten Joe nto offce. 7 6 Over-Confdent Durfee Loses n the best game of the season to date, the Red and vvhte trumphed 45-43, over one of ther stongest and most fearful opponents, Bradford-Durfee Tech. An enthusastc but small crowd of onlookers wtnessed ths seemngly unobtanable vctory n the Boyden Gym, on January 10, The Durfee boys came to B. T. C. wth an ar of over-confdence, because of ther long strng of vctores aganst hard challengers. Obvo).lsly they underestmated the pluck of the locals, who fought for all they were worth. Of course, we should allow the nvaders some leeway by mentonng that they played on.a strange floor; nevertheless, the ;oy of the Teachers was no less great as they blew up the Durfee myth of supremacy. The frst quarter saw Sargent snk a nce layup, and later assst Douthart n a shot. The Durfee men had good teamwork, passed skllfully, and made ther shots count. The next perod wtnessed Kudera and Zon formng a good defensve blockade, thus makng t dffcult for the opponents to make much headway. Mazukna, who flled Bob Teahan's poston due to the latter havng a knee njury, played a hard and fast game of ball. Happy kept Booth, one of Durfee's hgh scorers, to a mnmum number of ponts. Marsh Douthart was defntely "hot" as evdenced by hs makng basket after basket. Flanagan made a clever backhand hook shot that brought cheers from the crowd. After halftme, the passng and teamwork wcnt much more smoothly and the tmng was better. The locals had a better opportunty to operate because of ther greater speed, whch compensated for ther lack of heght. The last canto had the spectators excted and up on ther feet. t was dffcult to guess who would be vctorous as the lead changed hands many tmes n as many mnutes. Kudera and Douthart made a couple of skllful asssts to Ed Zon; Mazukna sank a clean foul shot, and Kudera made a set shot from back court.
