BOSTON. lhe gayly decorated shop wndows, the Jd ~ eager, hurryng crowds, the mystery and expectancy pervadng all about us, serve to warn us that the holday season s agan at hand. We at the nsttute have been well ngh too busy to note the approach of ths day, once the joyful antcpaton of a more careless exstence, but nevertheless wll t fnd us prepared to enjoy wth all the old tme fervor ts gve and take delghts, ts sweet home festval. n the haughty ndfference of our own dear nsttute for such a trval thng as custom, we sound our "Holdays" wthout the fnal "s," t s true, yet the jolly Tech. man s ever a cheerful sufferer, and you always fnd hm gayly acceptng the stuaton, and perhaps extractng a month's satsfacton n a graphc pcturng to some far frend of hs martyrdom. T ;s a wse man that taketh what he can get," says the Quaker n Hellyet, and we all agree. THE TECH scorns any mputaton that t s accessory to the condton of thngs that allows another holday promnence over the one sacred to our chldhood. We would gladly to-day gve the Chrstmas goose equal and greater attenton than that whch we pad hs rval, the Thanksgvng turkey, only four short weeks ago, but lack of space forbds. After but lttle more of our edtoral extra day, we hope to gve our readers many lghter thngs to dgest, and thus assurng each and everyone that though brefly, t s none the less emphatcally and heartly sad, we extend to all, Faculty, nstructors, undergraduates, far readers, and Freshmen, our best wshes for a joyful Chrstmas. / =, ' HE TECH naturally hears /'l many complants among the undergraduates whch do fr 1a, not reach the authortes '/7/J.' more nearly nterested and X. concerned. Wthn the last - ~ '~--/5~ '7 few weeks, the close condton of the ar n the new rectaton rooms of Walker has occasoned much dscusson, and many hard thngs havng been sad, one of the edtors of THE TECH set about to nvestgate the matter. Through the kndness of Mr. G. Russell Lncoln, who very cheerfully consented to make an analyss of the ar n the several rooms mentoned, and who conducted the expermnents and compled the results wth untrng energy, we are enabled to present for general consderaton the followng facts n the matter. The amount of carbonc acd n the ar of Rooms 26, 28, and 29, Walker, on Thursday, December 6th, O A. M. to P. Mv.: Room 26 -bottle placed on last row of seats near door parts n o,ooo; bottle at ext flue, 6.o90

102 12THE2 TECH. parts; thrty-sx persons present. Room 28 -back of the room, 8.78 parts; at platform, 7.8; thrty-two persons present. Room 29 -three wndows open at top; back of room, 7.96; platform, 8.8; about the same number present as n the other rooms. Some authortes gve for the allowable percentage of carbonc acd for good ar, sx parts n ten thousand, but a more conservatve estmate s fve. The outer ar contans approxmately three parts. t s not to be understood that hgher percentages are dangerous, however, for n crowded theaters, etc., the number of parts s often as hgh as thrtyfour. On the other hand, as s well known, the slghtest ncrease above the normal, decreases to a marked extent the ablty of the bran to sustan contnued effort, and t would seem, therefore, n vew of the facts gven above, and especally as the nsttute lays such great stress upon proper ventlaton, that there s some ground for the complants made n the matter. Room 26 s by far the best ventlated of the three, and has the regular ventlatng flues. Room 28, on the other hand, has only an entrance flue, whle room 29 has but an ext, each beng practcally useless wthout the presence of the other. t appears that the old Archtectural room was merely parttoned off, and the ventlaton left to take care of tself. The two other rooms are, doubtless, equally bad, but ar could not be taken from them as the doors had been left open. There s no cause for alarm, but much room for mprovement. HE football season s over, and our closed athletc meetng s a thng of the past, and there s but one event remanng ths term to call for the attenton and thoughtful consderaton of those among us who have at heart the welfare of athletcs at the nsttute, - Ths s the annual meetng of the M.. T. Football Assocaton. At ths meetng the manager and secretary wll present ther reports, and the general condton of the sport as a factor of nsttute lfe wll be dscussed. Besdes these general topcs, the subject of most mportance to be consdered wll be the course to be pursued next year n ths branch of athletcs. The unsatsfactory poston n whch our strong team was placed ths year has gven rse to the dea among many that football, as an nsttute sport, although so well developed n'88 and '89, has lately retrograded. On the contrary, the prospects at present are very brght, and there s no reason why we should not, wth the support of the students next fall, succeed prmarly n wpng out ths false mpresson; and then, by unted effort, n placng our football on the old champonshp bass. Through some msunderstandng, or for some at present not generally known reasons, we were excluded durng the past season from the Eastern ntercollegate Football Assocaton, of whch league we had been a member for several years, and n whch we had twce ganed supremacy. Ths year the condton of affars was naturally very unsatsfactory to most of the supporters of the team. To be sure, our vctory over the champons of the league afforded some consolaton for most of the subscrbers; but should another season see us n no assocaton whatever, t s far to suppose that the football enthusasts wll greatly dmnsh n number. Therefore, t behooves the nsttute at large, n order to keep alve and brght ths football nterest, to take steps at ths approachng meetng that wll sgnal success n ths all-mportant branch of college athletcs. After dscussng the matter wth many football players, and wth men who understand the queston and are anxous as to oar football future, we fnd that there s a generdl desre that the assocaton appont a commttee to present a formal request for readmsson to the East-

THED TElCH. 103 f ern ntercollegate FootballAssocaton. The members of ths league have always made money by playng.our team n Boston, and our demands should be acceded to f presented n the proper manner. n the case of falure to gan ths pont, the commttee should, t s thought, be empowered to report on the stuaton and the advsablty of formng a dual league wth one of the strong teams of the New England colleges,-a report from whch defnte plans could be adopted. At the comng meetng t wll be well to have all these matters dscussed and all suggestons fully sfted, n order that the proper measures may be undertaken and that no steps shall be made that wll deterorate our prospects. Above all, let the best suted men be apponted to handle ths vtally mportant matter.,- -.. < T really seems m-s -.. : possble that a -'.;,'.,., y ear has passed snce '92 chose her class-day off- A-7!~~ =--cers, but the no- :~ ~ ~...- tces of '93's nomnatng commttee have remnded us that tme fles, and that now everyone s askng everybody else, "who's elected?" n vew of the occurrences of last year, t may be well to remnd '93 that she s before us for the last tme, and that mstakes now made can never be remeded. The commttee has presented to the class fbr consderaton the names of men well known to the undergraduates of the nsttute. These men have worked earnestly and sncerely for ther class and for Tech. Ther nfluence has been for the general good, and ther places wll be hard to fll. t s an honor for a man to be mentoned on ther lst. He should be mndful of ths, and f he s defeated, should deprecate the hot words of hs too eager followers, and should do hs utmost to further the plans of the successful canddates. Every Senor havng been careful and decded n castng hs vote, should be determned now to abde by the verdct of hs classmates. There s lttle reason why the nsttute should be dsturbed by any feelng developed ths year by these electons. S was antcpated -v -X the wnter put an end to the long-drawnout t e n n s tournament. Tenns at the nsttute has been a mere farce ths year. The majorty of players have defaulted rather than accept the poor accorn modatons offered them. The mserable condton of the courts, and the lateness of the tournament s not due entrely to the management, but also n great measure to tlhe members of the assocaton. The meetngs must be attended, otherwse nothng can be done; they are so few and far between that a certan fee should be forfeted by the members for absence, n order to enrch the assocaton n one at least of the two essentals, cash and nterest. f the Assocaton cannot be properly supported and carred on, then let ts members brng t to an honorable end, thereby savng the nsttute the panful spectacle of ts slow and weary death. 12 104 The Sophomore Dnner. -= '--HE annual dnner of the Sophomore Class took place at Young's Hotel last Frday evenng, and was an occason long to be remembered. As a proof that the class sprt s not yet dead, seventy men fled nto the hall to lay out the extensve menu provded by the Executve Commttee. The festve board, extendng nearly around the room, was soon loaded wth the substantal thngs of lfe untl the well-seasoned oak groaned aloud to the tune of" Oh what a dfference n the mornng." t was a pleasant concdence that the Annual Dnner of M.. T. '75, was takng place n an adjonng room, and whle the evenng was yet young, the Alumn were drawn from ther own board by the resoundng Tech. cheers of the undergraduates, and showed ther hearty fellow-feelng n a loudly cheered, delghtful speech by ther Vce Presdent, Mr. B. L. Beal. The proper, comfortable, happy state beng at last attaned, the Presdent, C. F. Tllnghast, n a fttng speech, ntroduced the presdng offcer of the evenng, Mr. E. H. Huxley, who, wth hs usual urbanty, superntended the followng lst of toasts: "The Class of '95," George W. Hayden; "The Tech.," Andrew D. Fuller; " The Eleven Hundredth Student," Thomas B. Booth; " Class Sprt," Edward Leber; " Athletcs," James W. Thomas; "Our Junor Year," Albert Geger, Jr. Mr. Huxley called upon Mr. Hayden for the frst address, and n well chosen words, the former presdent spoke of the past career of '95, and urged the class to develop more nterest n all ts undertakngs. Mr. Fuller 1THE TECH. - then gave a short hstory of THE TECH, and assures us that our crculaton wll' lose none of ts present rotundty through hs remarks. A number of pleasng selectons were then gven by a quartette composed of Messrs. Schmtz, Wason, Reed and Sas. n response to "The Eleven Hundredth Student," Mr. Booth presented an nterestng hstory of the nsttute, ts growth and hgh standng of the present day, endng by suggestng a method facltatng a more thorough co-operaton of the entre student body. Mr. Leber arose apparently to roast "The Class Sprt," but, owng to the large attendance, decded to keep the roastng for the grnds, and congratulated the class on ts present success. A dffcult pano solo was well rendered by Mr. Reed; and then came "Tommy's" turn, and three rousng cheers for the captan of the 'varsty team. Mr. Thomas gave the class an nterestng vew of ts standng n athletcs, and prophesed brght prospects for the future. On the vague subject of" Our Junor Year," Mr. Geger offered hs hopes and ambtons, the usual heat joke not beng neglected; and as a soothng fnal Mr. Smetz rendered a bass solo, dong t all by hmself. Then after repeated cheers, and some many encored songs by the quartette and Mr. Sas, n the choruses of whch the whole assembly joned wth more or less success, the curtan dropped on '95's second successful dnner, and all pursued a more or less devous course for home. THE MSTLETOE. Ages ago the scalds have sad Was fashoned thereof an arrow head, And a blnd old god wthout defnte plan Shot the same at a marred man, Who ded of beng too much mpressed Wth the feelng that some one ought to be kssed. 14 106 THR~T~FCf- 106 TTLE TECH. t s very gratfyng to know that Professor Lanza expects to receve and set up hs three thousand pound testng machne wthn a very few days. There seems to be qute a lttle competton wth respect to an nsttute pn or button. The latest s a square lapel button, wth a grey T upon a red background. t has been suggested that the Senor Dnner occur ths term, before the sem-annuals shall have gven any more members of the class an opportunty to "change ther course." ",Theres a noose tem for you," murmured the Freshman to the Edtor, as they watched some futle efforts to ensnare an old owl who had found Boyslton Street an attractve thoroughfare. The dnner of the Archtectural Socety wll be held at the Parker House upon the evenng of December 2 9 th. t promses to be a very enjoyable affar, and all ts members should take advantage of t. Snce the departure from Tech. of Mr. C. E. Lockwood, the Banjo and Gutar Club has been n the hands of Mr. Geo. F. Shepard, 95, who s dong all n hs power to put t upon ts former bass. The Mechancal Engneerng Socety contnues to follow ts antquated polcy of electng offcers for the year and then dong nothng. Why not follow the example of the Cvl Engneerng Socety? Mr. D-: "Mr. R., wll you please crtcze the theme whose subject s, ' Fortesfortuna adjurat."' Mr. R., '96: "To begn wth, the subject of the theme should not be n French"!! t s rumored that a member of '9-'92 has been the recpent of three good postons snce he left the nsttute; and he has found, after a few days' tral of each, that he was not suted for work of the knd demanded. Poor fellow! What's gong to happen? Twce recently "nsttute of Technology" matter has appeared under the same headng as news from Harvard, Amherst, Dartmouth, etc., n the Sunday Herald. Tech. college stock s on the rse. Although the growng nterest of '95 and '96 n gymnasum work s most encouragng, there are many upper classmen who have not vsted the buldng snce ther last drll there. "Come down," '93 and '94, and "get a move on." A new lne of seats has been placed n the front of Professor Rchards' lecture room, presumably for the beneft of those grnds who desre to rvet ther attenton even more frmly upon what s beng sad and done over the desk. Rdler contnues to play hs same lttle gag" on every student who s forced to get notes at hs shop, by askng them f they don't also want covers for them. 0 no, Rdler! not when we can buy them at two thrds your prce elsewhere. Nearly all the mnng engneers of last year's class attended the Summer School of Mnes at Drfton, Penn., last June. The benefts and the successful management of these trps are much apprecated by the students. Now s the tme to arrange your grnds and hand n your contrbutons for "Technque." All work, sent n at any tme, wll be credted to the author and wll count toward the przes. Complete lsts of przes wll soon be posted and publshed. Mr. Swan, '9, s very popular wth hs large class n Marne Desgn. Every one n the M. E. drawng room can testfy that the marne archtecture men work hard. One man shaved off hs beard because the wnd hndered hm. Some queer thngs we see: Freshmen reclnng on drawng room tables; Sophomores wedgng themselves between doors; thrd-year Chemsts fghtng for stools; Senors playng Yankee Doodle wth a pencl on ther teeth. E 4 U

-ran The heads of the M. E. department should see to t that the wndows on the north and west sde of the drawng room are made tghter. At present the breezes blow a young hurrcane through the room on a wndy day, and every one s complanng. "'No!" sad the nstructor n drawng n room 30, Engneerng Buldng, "No, ths s not a concert; the fourth year men are only exercsng ther lungs. They have to put n so much extra tme n the afternoons that they must take some sort of exercse." For the convenence of the students n thrd year Theoretcal Electrcty, Mr. Clfford has produced some very neat notes. They are lthographed from the orgnal, a method new to thrd year men. Doubtless these notes wll prove a boon, and tend to make a hard course easer. Those Freshmen who receved a flunk n chemstry, and from the latest reports we fear there are more than several, would do well to take the sound advce gven them, and spend the prescrbed number of hours a week upon t; and perhaps upon a few other subjects as well. Professor Dewey has arranged a promsng debate on bmetallsm for the class n Economc Problems. The class s equally dvded, references assgned, and statstcans apponted for each sde. The debate wll take place at the regular rectaton hour, Wednesday, December 28th. The presence of an unfastened seat n Professor Cross' lecture room caused the Senors consderable amusement on Saturday mornng. As each new vctm entered and sat down n t, he was gven a shakng up compared wth whch a trp n an elevator would be a case of stable equlbrum. Thank heavens! At last! t s a student at cultured Wellesley who "respects Tech. men for ther earnestness of purpose, and admres ther college sprt, more than that of any other college, for ts true manlness." 107 PH1~ T~CH Three cheers for her, and may her opnon be propagated enormously throughout the land! One of the Junors serously consders ssung a busness card to ths effect: "Cussng by Proxy. Satsfacton Guaranteed." What a boon for our o'ertaxed, yet scrupulous Mechancals. Here perhaps s a relef from those "blue streaks" that now dart so frequently across the Drawng Room (30 Eng., of course.) THE WAY WE FREEHAND DRAW. Mr. A-ms: "W-e-l-l, thnk you should put some more charcoal upon that shadow, so as to defne the masses more clearly." Mr. Cu-ng, assstant (fve mnutes later): "My, my! that s entrely too black. Suppose you blow some of that charcoal off. There, that's better." The Frday matnees n Walker Buldng, from 4 to 5 P. M., ntroducng many new and nterestng features of electrc sgnalng, are very popular wth all of the Course V. men. So popular, ndeed, that the Faculty have decded to gve an evenng performance from seven to eght, n Huntngton Hall. Evenng dress wll be n order. Steps are beng taken to organze a Freshman dnner club, composed of from ffteen to twenty of the leadng men of the class. t s the ntenton to make the club a permanent nsttuton, and f the fundamental prncple s carred out, t wll undoubtedly be a success, and wll, n ts way, do consderable good. More wll probably be heard of t later. The new Faculty rule, whch requres the choce of Courses to be made by the Freshmen at the end of the second term, carres wth t another pleasng nnovaton. On Thursday last Presdent Walker delvered an nterestng and nstructve lecture to the Freshmen, relatve to the approachng selecton. Ths s a new dea, and s a good one. t s pleasng to note the ncreasng nterest manfested n mltary drll at Tech.-n Captan Hurd's company s ths especally evdent.

o1 111r114R -111rCm. f we are to have drll here at all, t should be drll that s thoroughly up to the Tech. standard. As long as t s confned to the Freshman Class, t must necessarly be looked down upon to a greater or less extent,-fortunately the "'less" s begnnng to predomnate. The spontaneous applause whch greeted the menton of the name of Mr. A. J. Purnton, n the Senor lecture n Frcton the other day, testfed to the esteem n whch that popular nstructor s stll held among hs former students. Mr. Purnton resgned hs nstructorshp n Mechansm n 89, and has snce held the poston of Electrcal Engneer for the Brockton Street Ralroad, of Brockton, Mass. SCENE N THE LUNCH ROOM. Freshman: "How much do owe you, Mrs. Kng?" Mrs. Kng: "Ffty cents, please." Sophomore: "How much do owe?" Mrs. K.: "Thrty cents." Junor: "How much?" Mrs. K.: " Twenty-fve." Senor looks at Mrs. Kng wth a knowng wnk, and walks out. Several Tech. students have been caught lately patronzng the Oak Grove Farm Lunch Room. Doubtless t s owng to the rumor that varous young lades, from the "Msses' Boardng Schools" around the corner on Newbury Street, frequent the place. However, we trust but few wll yeld to ths temptaton (t s a strong one, we must admt), and neglect home ndustry. Mrs. Kng has not brbed us for ths puff. We learn that the recepts from the pool table at the chapel are decreasng daly. Ths s no McKnleysm, or Republcan hgh tarff ssue, but merely a sgn that our sportng element have become aware of the fast approachng semes. [To mantan our long upheld standard of poltcal neutralty, t s necessary to add that the above does not, on the other hand, sgnfy or ndcate any approachng reducton n dutes.-ed.] A certan '95 man who spent hs summer vacaton workng n a steel plant near Baltmore, Md., has learned what terrapn s. He went " to town " one pay-day nght and vsted several places where he saw the sgn, "Terrapn and Oysters." On hs return he told hs roommate how the fellows had asked hm to have some terrapn, but he refused, because,- "Well, say ' budde,' what knd of a brd s a terrapn anyway; s t anythng lke a canvass-back?" Nether '94 nor '95 had a pcture of ts baseball team taken last sprng. Ths s much to be regretted, for baseball at Tech., though confned to the lower classes, s a strong branch of our athletcs, and should be well represented n "Technque." Unfortunately, the early date of the annual examnatons prevents the mantenance of a 'varsty team, but that s all the more reason for puttng our excellent baseball materal on permanent exhbton n our Annual. t mght be well for '94 and '95 to endeavor, even at ths late hour, to collect ther teams for a photograph; '94, at any rate, ought to nsst upon ths, f t apprecates the excellent work of ts team. The frst cross-country run under the auspces of the Tech. Athletc Club was held last Saturday afternoon. Consderng the fact that the ponts scored theren are to count for the class cup, there should have been more entres than the followng: Dorman, '93, Owen, '94, Taylor, '94, Batchelder, '95, Rockwell, '96, Norrs, '96. The course selected was from the gym. to Cooldge's Corner and return, a dstance of about sx mles. The tme made was very credtable, and stands as the nsttute record. At 3.O the men were started, and n 3 mn. sec. Batchelder crossed the lne, a good wnner. Dorman, '93, was second; tme, 3x mn. 30 sec. Taylor, '94, thrd; tme, 31 mn. 46 sec. A short tme ago one of our Junor Cvls had occason to patronze a Chnese laundry, wth a loss of four collars as a result. The 4, v r Z a F

~ ~ r~~k1bo 0 Chnaman promsed to "makee a' yte," but produced only two of the mssng collars, and when our Cvl frend demanded all that were due hm, one of the Messrs. Antpodes allowed hs anger to rse,; together wth a flatron that was handy. Upon ths evdence of warm nterest, our hero sezed the lght char upon whch he had been sttng, and when the flatron came uncomfortably near, ths lghtweght argument completely floored the Chnaman. mmedately our Cvl grabbed hs collars, and took the rapd transt home. t s rumored that he wll take the stump for restrcton of mmgraton. Last Thursday mornng, at the tme of the usual drll rectaton, Presdent Walker addressed the Freshmen on the matter of selecton of course. n general, although he could gve no absolute advce, hs talk certanly tended to show that every course had ts own partcular advantages, and opened to ts graduates the fnest of postons, f they are only capable, by honest work, to gan a place at the front whch ther tranng deserves. Ths choce of course, sad the Presdent, must certanly be made by the end of the present term, nasmuch as the regular work n the separate departments wll be commenced at that tme, nstead of at the begnnng of the second year, as heretofore. f, however, at the frst of that year, a student of hgh standng fnds that, for some mportant reason, t would be better for hm to take some other course, he wll be allowed to make the change. Nnety-four held a class meetng last Frday n Room, R. B., Mr. Meade presdng. t was voted that, owng to the present bankrupt state of the class and the proxmty of the Semes, the Annual Class Dnner should come off durng the frst three weeks of the second term. Messrs. Pechn, Baldwn, and Greenleaf were apponted as a Dnner Commttee. The affar may partake somewhat of the nature of a "Supper,"-n hopes of makng t -r -E,11r1:1 C1 100 a more general socal event, as a larger number of the class would probably attend, on account of a slght decrease n the expense. The class then voted to pay ts share of the Senor Dnner Commttee's defct, amountng to some twenty-fve dollars. The queston of another Senor Dnner was brought up, and, upon moton of Mr. Prce, a temporary commttee of three was apponted to consder all sdes of the matter, t beng understood that the fnal commttee should be backed by the class, thus removng any possblty of an ndvdual fnancal loss, besdes the necessary loss of tme. The char apponted Messrs. Daves, F. Holden, and Blss. Next, the recommendatons of the Executve Commttee of '93 were consdered. Mr. R. B. Prce and Mr. C. W. Dckey were chosen to act wth Mr. Meade as '94's members of the " nsttute Commttee." Nnety-four, as ndeed all classes must do, heartly favors the nauguraton of ths commttee, whose dutes are to " promote the welfare of Technology both at home at abroad." After a few words by Mr. Prce upon the past atttude of '94 toward THE TECH, and ther present duty to t, snce they are so soon to be responsble for ts support, the meetng adjourned. Under the Rose. Under the rose s the happest phrase, Leadng us back through the shadowy haze That vels dull Now from the Long Ago, To the tme when young blood n a rollckng flow Went gallopng on through an endless maze. Oh! for the hours we stole from the days Of a careless youth that no sgn obeys, Save the lps that kss and the cheeks that glow Under the rose. Fate leads us on through her devous ways, Brds may warble ther lghtest lays, Echong blthely the thoughts that grow Faster than Pan when Death s slow; But the lghest thought s the one that strays Under the rose. Orator Edmund Enos Blake. Hstoran... Wllam Gahrel Houck. Poet... Harold Anthony Rchmond. Statstcan... Percy Holbrook Thomas. Prohet Henry Adams Morss. The electon for Marshals s most satsfactory. Messrs. Tantor and Dllon are both athletc men. Nether belongs to any fraternty or socety. They are bothmnost representatve men. Nor should less be sad of Mr. Gorham, who has always been closely dentfed wth hs class, and at one tme was ts secretary. Mr. Gorham s a member of Delt Ps and Hammer and Tongs. No second-rate man s "Mary" Blake, and a good oraton s assured. Mr. Blake s a member of D. K. E., and was presdent of Nnetythree n the Sophmore year. He was Socety Edtor on last year's "Technque." The successful canddates for Hstoran and Statstcan are, as yet, untred men n lterary work. Mr. Houck s now secretary of the Class, and has held offce n the Cvl Engneerng Socety. When he became one of us, he decded that a fraternty pn would add luster to hs tolet arrangements, and mmedately set about, accordng to hs most approved and nterestng methods, to " look the matter up." Aftergvng much thought and consderaton to the subect he found that t was mpossble to obtan any blanks for membershp from ether the Bursar or Presdent. He decded to wat a lttle whle; perhaps knd fate would gve hm the means of fulfllng hs fondest hopes. He stayed n hs room evenngs, and wated for some one to call to admnster the secret rtes to hm; he always tred to edge hs way nto the center of any group of students wth the hope that he would obtan a cue to the all powerful spell. He watched and wated, and questoned all the Freslhmen of hs calber about ther vews and projects on the subject, notably the one who had advertsed for a chum. Fnally hs reward came; on a brght, sunny day (at whch tme hs true color seemed most notceable) hle receved a letter. The letter smply stated that the D. F. Chapter of A. S. S. fraternty consdered hm a most worthy and sutable man for membershp, and that, f he would lke to become one of them he must wear the enclosed green rbbon n hs buttonhole for a week, and meet some 'of the members of the fraternty on the " clover feld" on a certan evenng later. Dd our hero falter, thnkng hmself perchance mposed upon? Not he. He wore the green rbbon, and even went so far as to cut the red sealng wax off the back of the letter and paste t on the end of the rbbon. Wth a proud ar he strutted about hs daly dutes, and he scarcely found the tme to exchange hs customary pleasantres wth the restaurant grl. The gates of hs college paradse seemed to stand TECH. 111 ajar, and the path thther seemed qute short as lhe gazed at the open sesame on hs breast. Frst of all he wrote a letter home, tellng the " folks" of hs good fortune, and enclosed n hs letter a long column of possble expendtures he would have to make n hs new lfe. Ffty dollars, he calculated, would buy hm a fne pn set around wth damonds, and a heavy gold chan attached. Then he mght also want cuff buttons and studs to match. t was a neat lttle sum he fnally added up, and he chuckled wth delght as he saw hmself arrayed n hs elegant fnery. Hours seemed days to hm as the eventful evenng drew near, and when he started for the " ' clover feld" hs exctemnent had reached the hghest ptch. He came, he saw, he ; he found hs frends (as he had slly termed them to hmself when thnkng of ths evenng), and rglt gladly dd they welcome hm. Was ever a Freshman so popular he thought to hmself; and hs frends playfully tell the story, now, that they all heard hs hat band crack as he grasped them one after another by the hand, and varous grps and odd sgns were explaned to hm. As the frends had on masks, he was scarcely able to see the convulsons and fts of hystercs they were undergong. But the end came all ere long. He was told he must be left n slent medtaton for some mnutes, n order that he mght collect hs mystfed senses, and thnk over the solemnty of the occason, as well as rehearse the varous sgns and passwords they had taught hm. Thus they left hm, standng blndfolded n the center of the feld, wth both legs ted together, hs hands lashed behnd hm, and a muzzle over hs mouth. Yes, he wated for them. The mnutes grew to hours, and stll he wated. At frst he swayed back and forth restlessly; then he moaned n hs muffler as a feelng of numbness stole over hm; he peregrnated about on two soldfed extremtes, untl he fnally fell to the ground a helpless mass of concet and freshness. And thus he was found by a good Samartan n the early dawn. And the sequel s n full conformty wth the events that precede t, for fellow Freshmen stll approach hm n the Mechancal Drawng Room, and congratulate hm on hs rse, he recevng them wth suave url)anty, and a sprt unassaled by any suspcon that of all " unholy roasts" hs s the most devlshly good one.
