FRANK WOOD, PRNTER, 352 WASHNGTON STREET, BOSTON. -~~~~~~~~~... ~ -, S the weeks slp by and we begn to realze that the term s nearly half over, the ev en ts assumes a promnent place n our thoughts. Most r~1~ 1 of us wll remember ~'" how t h e afternoon ] Tech partes ended two years ago; how t h e "Technology Assembly" was planned and carred out last sprng upon very short notce, so that there should be no precedent establshed of a year wthout at least an attempt at a general socal event. The success of that occason practcally ntated t as an annual addton to our festvtes. Already the Junors are dscussng the best means of runnng ther assembly, or promenade, whchever t may be styled. n the frst place, the only practcal way to lmt the tcket holders to the number that can be accommodated n Perce Hall-whch s the only one n Boston suted to our needs-s by placng a far prce upon tcket&. There appears to be some dversty of opnon as to how the affar shall be run. The best way out of the dffculty, t seems to THE TECH, s to throw upon the nsttute Commttee the responsblty of electng each year fve men from the Junor class to manage a Technology assembly. Ths overcomes any local class acton of clques, gves each class ndrectly an nterest n the ball, and makes the management a poston of honor. Precedent would soon establsh thngs so frmly that many present troubles would cease to exst. The early part of February s probably the best season to gve the assembly, beng just before Lent, n cool weather, and before the hard work of the second term has farly begun. Several members of the Banjo Club have expressed ther wllngness to play at the assembly f wanted. A plan for two or three days of festvtes, such as most other colleges enjoy durng the wnter term, has called forth much enthusasm. Ths wll be dscussed n a later ssue of THE TECH. L TTLE by lttle the " Technque" edtors are realzng the dffcultes of ther task. As the work to be performed s more fully outlned, they become aware of ther dependence upon our students at large for contrbutons, suggestons, and general assstance. Would that the mass of students could be brought to understand these condtons as perfectly as the edtors themselves. Then, ndeed, would " Technque" shne,-but the mere thought blnds us. However, snce suggestons are n order, let the '95 edtors carefully avod unnecessary parody n verse. R..,4. OF

6 4 ' -THE TECH. Neglect of ths was a lamentable falng n our last annual. No matter how beautfully expressed even a lofty dea may be, ts effect s almost completely counteracted by the bare suggeston of metrcal mtaton. S most of us are aware, athletes especally, the gym. s lghted by daylght and gaslght, by the former chefly. We can hardly expect one-dollar gas to compete wth old Sol n brllancy, but nevertheless we do desre and need better llumnaton at the end of these fast-shortenng days. t s almost an axom, stated by those who are supposed to know, that exercse, to be most benefcal, should be taken n a cheerful f-ame of mnd. But who can be cheerful n a dmly lghted structure? ncandescent lghts would answer every purpose, gvng ncreased lght better dstrbuted, and superor ventlaton. The electrc plant n Walker Buldng, or the cty crcut, could supply power convenently. HE rumor reaches us that a proposton has been brought before the Faculty to allow a week's ntermsson at both Thanksgvng and Chrstmas. t s very evdent that such a recess would be at once benefcal to student and nstructor alke, and would lead to most successful results. Every Tech man has looked wth dsfavor upon the one day usually granted at Chrstmas, whle the three days at Thanksgvng have hardly been suffcent to gve the much needed rest whch s desred at the mddle of a long and severe term of work. Even f the summer vacaton was shortened somewhat, t would seem preferable to have two short seasons for recreaton at tmes when t s most needed. Although we dscredt the report that such a proposal has actually been made, t s, nevertheless, worthy of careful consderaton. The fact that many men drop out before the fall term s completed, s no lttle argument n tavor of ths scheme. HE leasng of'the Wnslow Rnk to the New England Art Students' League, wll be an advantage to the nsttute n more than a fnancal way. The League has a membershp of about two hundred, and s supported by the dute of Boston. Naturally, therefore, t occupes a promnent socal poston n our cty. The purpose of the league s the common ad of ts members n the study of art; ts desre now s to make the new "Grundman Studo Buldng" the art center of Boston. s The extensve repars have progressed so rapdly that even at ths early date a far dea of the new arrangements can be obtaned. n the center of the buldng wll be a dance hall, 5 x 48 feet. At one sde of ths s to be a banquet hall, 60 x 30 feet, whch wll contan a small stage for prvate theatrcals. At the front of the buldng the lbrary, recepton rooms, smokng room, and busness rooms of the Art League wll be placed. Grouped around these, takng up the remander of the frst floor, wll be dsposed some of the studos of the members of the League. The second floor wll be gven up entrely to studos, the largest of whch wll be occuped by Mr. Ross Turner, nstructor n water color at the nsttute. Among the other noted artsts who wll occupy studos n the new buldng wll be Arthur Dowe, Max Bartman, Mme. Peralta, Mr. and Mrs. Stone, Langford Warren, Mr. Claus, and others. There wll be thrty-sx studos n all. One room on the frst floor wll be occuped by a branch store of Wradsworth & Howland, dealers n artsts' materals. Ths wll brng a large supply to the Tech students wthn three mnutes of any buldng of the nsttute where such materals are used. Whle t s to be regretted that the fnances of the nsttute made ths lease necessary, yet evdently the value of the nsttute's property wll be enhanced, by addng greatly to our ste already happly surrounded. 9 THE E TEXCH. r f n ts very mdst, Technology certanly has an atmosphere as cultured as the Back Bay can gve t,-one t would be extremely dffcult to equal elsewhere n the country. (OMMU GATONS. The Edtors do not hold themselves responsble Jor opnons expressed by correspondents. To THE EDTORS OF THE 1TECH:- There appears to exst consderable doubt n the mnds of many of the men at the nsttute as to the exact shades of Technology's colors. beleve the offcal announcement when they were chosen was that they should consst of " cardnal red and slver gray," but ths defnton allows a consderable dfference to be observed among the flags at our football matches, and on other occasons where our colors are promnent, whle all actually come wthn ths defnton. Now, what would suggest. s that the nsttute Commttee should decde just what shades we are n the future to go by, and, havng decded, post the same n a glass case n Rogers Corrdor, or some equally good place. f have not made myself plan, would suggest as a model the way the members of the Boston Athletc Assocaton have ther colors posted n the lbrary of ther clubhouse. R. W. To THE EDTORS OF THE TECH:- Where can the sprt of farness of one class toward another be better shown than at the cane rush? But '96, however, descended to the low, unsportsman-lke trck of usng barbed wre on the flagpole. t was no credt, therefore, to '96 that her flag waved unfought for, for no one cared to be all cut up n attemptng to tear t down; '97 made a mute appeal to the farmndedness of the spectators by not attemptng t although one '97 man dd start the attempt, untl throttled by at least seventy-fve jublant Sophs who nearly tore hm to peces n ther wldness. f'96 had put up her flag and guarded t successfully, t would have been a proud day for her; but never, never has any class but '96 been gulty of such an act All honor, then, to the man who made the attempt, and may the gnomny of ths unsportsman-lke act follow '96 to the end. am, respectfully, a sympathzer of '97, c. A. M. The Lbrares of the nsttute. THE nsttute possesses what s known as a workng lbrary. ts thrty thousand volumes and many thousand pamphlets, perodcals, and papers have all a drect bearng upon nsttute work, and have all been carefully selected from tme to tme, as the'r need has become apparent n the development of the courses. The collecton embraces the wdest range of scentfc work, and s dvded nto lbrares whose dstrbuton and general arrangement s at once unque and advantageous. The several departments have been arranged n the dfferent buldngs where they are most convenent for the varous courses. Thus we have a dstrbuton and locaton as follows: Mnng Lbrary, Rogers, Room 9. Bologcal Lbrary, Rogers, Roonm 13. Geologcal Lbrary, Rogers, Room r4. General Lbrary, Rogers, Room 5. Mathematcal Lbrary, Rogers, Room 34. Lbrary of Poltcal Scence, Englsh, and Hstory, Rogers, Room 40. Physcs Lbrary, Walker, Roonm r5. Chemstry Lbrary, Walker, Room 43. Archtectural Lbrary, Archtectural, Room 32. Engneerng Lbrary, Engneerng, Room 40. t s furthermore characterstc of all the nsttute lbrares that they are accessble to all students. A student s at lberty to take any book from any lbrary, provded that he conforms to smple and necessary regulatons. The one rule set down s that the name of the borrower, the name of the book, and the date be wrtten n the record book provded n every lbrary, and that n most cases the book be returned the followng day. t s obvous that such a smple regulaton mposes a trust on the student, the volaton of whch produces serous embarrassment n the work of others. But, on the other hand, the advantages of such a free use of books as ths regulaton permts can but be of the greatest value. Taken all n all, the selecton, arrangement, and manner of conductng the lbrares could hardly be surpassed, as far as actual beneft to the stu- dents s concerned.

66 THE TECH. Nnety-Sx Vctorous. FOR the frst tme n four years the Sophomores have won the cane rush. For them to wn the football game, however, s rather to be expected. At three o'clock last Monday, '97 started the game by ganng ten yards wth an openng wedge. The ball was lost on four downs, and '96 then worked to the opponents' lne n seven mnutes. Howland made the frst touchdown; Sas faled for goal. A second touchdown for '96 was made by Rockwell eght mnutes later. Ths gan was secured manly by a 25-yard run of Rockwell's. Sas kcked a good goal from near the sde lne. Agan '96 swept down the feld. Howland was pushed over for a touchdown, but Sas faled for goal. The Freshmen then braced, and n short tme sent McElwane over for a touchdown. Goudy's try for goal faled. Here a sde rush occurred, '97 tryng successfully to secure some placards carred by the Sophs. The men had hardly begun to play agan when tme was called. n the second half, Manahan replaced Robnson at center; '96 worked the flyng wedge for a 20o-yard gan, and hurred the ball toward goal. Just at the lne the ball was dropped by a Soph, and pcked up by Waldo, who, however, was forced to make a safety. Rockwell now broke through several tmes, but was well blocked by McCormck; '96's advance caused great enthusasm on the Sophomore sde of the feld. The crowd, headed by a German band hred for the occason, trumphantly marched to the flag pole and back, and rased some new transparences to please the Freshmen. Wth ths encouragement '96 quckly made another touchdown, but as usual the try for goal faled. Play was now pretty even, tme fnally beng called wth the ball on '97's twenty-yard lne. Sophomores, 20; Freshmen, 4. Good work was done for '97 by McElwane, Washburn, and Underwood, whle Sas, Batchelder, and Rockwell showed up well for '96. Three of '95's old players, Sas, Batchelder and Glman, played on the Sophomore team. The teams lned up as follows: '96-rushers, Brown, Mayo, Glman, Robnson (Manahan), Whtng, Meade, Batchelder; quarter back, Tower; half backs, Howland, Rockwell; full back, Sas. '97--rushers, Underwood, Vnton, Worcester, McCormck, Heard, Wash-.burn, Parker; quarter back, Mansfeld; half backs, McElwane, Waldo; full back, Goudy. Referee, Edward D. Clark, '94. Umpre, H. W. Hayward, '95. After the game, those of the Freshmen who were courageous enough to enter the rush, formed themselves n concentrc rngs about those holdng the cane. Most of the '97 men present seemed to prefer watchng the combat from the outsde. Unfortunately for '97, the Sophomore class dd not show the same sprt. They made up two wedges, ready to bear down upon the Freshman crowd from dfferent drectons. Suddenly, however, one of the wedges broke loose to catch an unlucky Freshman, who had been dscovered wearng 6 clmbers." The culprt was drven up among the "bleachers", and fared roughly at the hands of the crowd. He was rescued by some '94 men, but was releved of hs "clmbng rons" before gettng free. The Sophomore wedges once more formed for the rush and started toward the lttle Spartan band of Freshmen. The rest must be left to our readers' magnatons. When tme was called, twenty mnutes after the start, t was almost mpossble to separate the contestants. Wth the assstance of upper classmen the hands remanng on the cane were at last counted. As a result, the Sophomores were accredted wth twenty-one, the Freshmen wth ten. Had '97 been as numerous or as well organzed as ther rvals they would have fared better, undoubtedly. But they take ther defeat gracefully and must now look for other laurels.,_1.,,ta -&d ~

k Are there no photographers n '97? Thanksgvng vacaton approaches! Take advantage of the lberal przes offered by the '95 "Technque" Board. The Archtectural Socety s to have a dnner "when the desgns are n." Freshman (who was n the hottest of the rush): " don't feel sore physcally, but do mentally." The game wth Wllams, scheduled for last Saturday, was cancelled, owng to the crppled condton of our players. Anarchy s makng ts way at the nsttute. At least the manufacture of volcanc bombs progresses quetly n 2 Rogers. A pcture of the Junor Class on the steps of the Natural Hstory Buldng, was taken for "Technque" last week Thursday. The Socety elected fve new members, Herbert H. Barnes, J. Foster Whte, Geo. S. Moynehan, Jas. L. McQjuarre, and Chas. M. March. A standng joke: Prof. Cr-ss (manpulatng the water wave model), "the smaller cranks are moved by the acton of a greater crank behnd." The members of Course X. were taken down to the wharves on Thursday, November 9 th, to nspect the Gloucester, of the Baltmore lne of steamers. Mr. Adams has recently placed on exhbton n the Freehand Room of the Archtectural Buldng a new lne of casts, whch are sad to be very drawng attractons. The Class of '96 wll have a class group taken Frday, November 17th, at P. M., on ''FE -PEF:C-. 67 THE TEH 67: the Natural Hstory steps. All members of the class are expected to be present. Course., '95, has formed a football team, and challenged Course V., '95. The game wll probably occur ths afternoon on the Clover Feld. Two 5-mnute halves wll be played. t should be the duty of each member of the Class of '96 to see that hs class assessment s pad. Mr. M. E Perce s the class treasurer, and should be called upon as soon as possble. "Do you beleve n 'caporal' punshment?" one student asked another. On one sde of the large bulletn board n Rogers corrdor the mornng after the electon: "Professor F. wll omt hs lecture n Descrptve Geometry ths mornng." On the other sde was found, "He voted for Russell." Professor C "Ths experment wll prove the prncple, f no accdent occurs." Tres t-strng breaks-laughter! Professor C : "Well, at any rate have proved that the unexpected always happens." Several '96 men served as ushers at the Charty Far n Musc Hall at ts openng, Monday evenng, November 6th. Leutenant Hawthorne was agan, as last year, chosen marshal for the evenng, the Sophomores actng as ads. Prof. Elhu Thomson's lecture, to be delvered at Odd Fellows Hall, Lynn, at eght o'clock ths evenng, has been enttled "Lghtnng." " We wsh to correct an error whch appeared n No. 4, concernng the electon of 'the executve commttee of the Sophomore Class. R. Johnston was the successful canddate for the poston on the commttee nstead of P. F. Johnson, as stated n THE TECH of the above date. A short meetng of the Freshman Class was held last Saturday n Huntngton Hall. The offcal class electon reports were read by the temporary secretary, and Mr. Bragg took the char. t was voted to assess members of the class twenty-fve cents each for current expenses of the class, and then the meetng was adjourned. The Sophomore cvls are now at work surveyng a seres of connected felds out at Clarendon Hlls. Professor Burton proposes to make an exact survey of a consderable area there, whch s of some nterest geologcally. After completng the work, the result Nwll be embraced n a topographcal map of the dstrct. Professor Cross was charman of Secton B of the nternatonal Electrcal Congress, held n Chcago last August. Secton B had to do wth-subjects combnng theory and practce, and papers were read by many emnent electrcans from ths country and abroad. Several of the mechancal and electrcal students of the nsttute were n attendance. At some tme durng the month Leutenant Hawthorne proposes to gve a stereoptcon lecture to the Freshman class on the subject of "Small Ordnance," takng up prncpally the rfle. The lecture wll be gven n Room 37, Rogers, and wll be open to men nterested n the subject from the upper classes, n so far as the room wll accommodate them. We are not aware who were to blame folr the contemptble dsplay of egg throwng at the cane rush last week; but unfortunately appearances seem to mplcate several Tech men, who were ably asssted by the lttle urchns upon the grounds, boys not supposed to know better. Any student at Technology should be above such actons, whether he be Freshman or Senor. On November 7th the Photographc Socety held ts regular monthly meetng. W. M. Partrdge, '96, was elected vce presdent n place of Mr. Azel Ames, who was forced to resgn on account of press of work. Other routne busness was transacted, and the plan of work for the year dscussed. Mr. W. W. Crosby, Mr. W. H. Lawrence, and Mr. H. W. Nchols were elected honorary members, and Mr. Mortmer Frank, '96, Mr. C. Drake, '96, and Mr. D. W. Rchards, '94, actve members. Mr. E. B. Brd, '9, well known to many of our present undergraduates, has made the llustratons for " Olla Podrda," the Wesleyan Junor Annual. Last year he suppled nearly all the cuts for Amherst, Wesleyan, and Tufts. He has done work f6r Brown, and n fact nearly a1l the colleges n ths part of the country. Just by a slp he lost the contract for the Unversty of Pennsylvana's Annual. Would that more Tech alumn were lke Mr. Brd, who retans hs nterest n Technology at ts hghest ptch, keeps n touch wth our present condtons, and has many warm frends n consequence. He has a pleasant studo n "The Pelham," on Boylston Street, where many an dea s orgnated, to be multpled later n varous books and magaznes. The "Technque" Board have offered the followng przes: Best orgnal, purely nsttute song, words and musc not necessarly by same author, $25; best new college song, applcable to M.. T., $o; best artstc contrbutons, frst prze, $o; second prze, $5 best orgnal poem, $5; best collecton of grnds and quotatons, $5; best lterary and mscellaneous matter, $5; best value n advertsements, total amount beng $oo or over, $25; to all others on all ads. secured, o per cent. The board reserve the rght to

THED TECH.9 69 wthhold any prze n case only undeservng contrbutons are receved. Contrbutors should confer wth A. D. Fuller, T. B. Booth, or G. 1H. Matthes on lterary matters; F. B. Masters, G. H. Davs, or Allson Owen on artstc matters; A. L. Canfeld or E. H. Huxley n relaton to advertsements. "Technque" s an nsttute publcaton; hence every student should assst n any way he can. The Senors n Course V. have receved notce to choose ther theses and commence work mmedately. Ths s a departure from the old custom of begnnng thess work at the frst of the second term, and s caused by khe change n the course of study whch took place ths year. Begnnng wth the Class of '94, the Senors n Archtecture wll have a course n constructve desgn; and n vew of ths fact, the Faculty have requred that each canddate for a degree n Archtecture shall, n addton to makng a desgn, solve some of the dffcult problems n constructon whch would be met f the desgn should be executed. Ths has been optonal prevous to the new arrangement, and consequently comparatvely few have chosen constructon for a thess. The new requrement has met wth favor among the students, snce t requres them to become famlar wth a very practcal branch of ther professon. Mr. Geo. R. Fuller, a graduate of the nsttute, read a very nterestng paper before the Socety of Arts, Thursday evenng, November 9 th. The subject was the "Removal of Pathogenc Bactera from Drnkng Water." Mr. Fuller s at work n the Experment Staton at Lawrence He clams that snce the Lawrence water s purfed by sand fltraton, the death rates by typhod fever and lke dseases have been cut down exceedngly. The sand flter n use at Lawrence s two and one-half acres n area, and a smlar one for Boston would requre an extent of twenty-one acres. The system of sand fltraton s n use n Berln and London, where the typhod fever l rates are far below those of Amercan ctes. The advantage of the sand flter n cholera tmes was llustrated by the good health of the cty of Altona, whch draws ts water from the Elbe below Hamburg. n Altona the, number of deaths by cholera was 328, compared wth 7,6r deaths n Hamburg. n the Unversty Mzagnazze for October we fnd the followng tems: " The '94 'Technque' s a very full book; t s profusely llustrated, and gves one the mpresson that there are some exceptonally clever men both wth pen and pencl at the Massachusetts nsttute of Technology." "Both the Worcester and Massachusetts nsttutes of Technology deserve the greatest credt for a unformly good showng whch they made n football. Ther Facultes are opposed to athletcs, and when t s consdered that the gfted athletes bf' both unverstes thnk nothng of carryng thrty hours per week of rectaton, n addton to ther tranng, the success they have attaned under the crcumstances s truly remarkable. The M...T. has held the champonshp of the Eastern ntercollegate League." "Among the smaller leagues s the one between Worcester nsttute of Technology (meanng, however, the M.. T.), Trnty, and Brown. At present wrtng Brown refuses to sancton a rule urged by the other two members, stpulatng that each member of a unversty eleven must take ten hours per week, Ths rule s undenably n the nterests of clean football, and Brown wll probably grant the pont fnally. Varous ugly rumors have been afloat concernng the Brown eleven, and ths department takes great pleasure n publshng an extract from a letter by the manager of the Brown Football Assocaton: 'Nether Mr. Donovan nor Mr. Mllard were fnancally nduced to enter Brown Unversty. These men have told me personally that they never ntended to enter Yale... There s not a canddate for the football team aganst whomn the charge of professonalsm can be brought.'" 1 f, r P. 14 U 70 THE TEC-. Brown, 36; Tech, o. LAST week Wednesday Tech receved ts severest defeat of the season at the hands of a team whch n years past has generally been as badly beaten by Technology. Our team has been n crppled condton for several weeks, but t s hardly probable that we would have beaten Brown even wth our regular team n good condton. Just as long as student opnon contnues n ts present dormant state, dong nothng to nduce our best men to appear on the football feld, we may expect defeat nstead of vctory. When we glance at the fne physques of many Tech men who can and ought to be on our teams, t makes us ashamed to compare our records wth those of other colleges wthout half the materal at ther command. The weght of student sentment makes men play, and gves them honor for so dong. An audence, composed largely of lades, encouraged the Brown team as t started the game, at Ten yards wth a V, followed by gans through the lne, and a 25-yard run around rght end by Mllard, took the ball to Tech's 3-yard lne. Here Tech got the ball, but soon lost t, whereupon McCarthy was pushed through for a touchdown. Mllard kcked goal. Tech made eght yards wth a flyng wedge, but could gan no more, and had to punt. Tech's defense was extremely poor, and, coupled wth Brown's splendd nterference, heaver lne, and more dashng play, allowed the ball to be n our terrtory and n Brown's possesson most of the tme. Agan McCarthy was pushed over for a touchdown, Mllard falng for goal. Brown, o; Tech, o. Brown fumbled badly several tmes, but the quckness of her half backs saved her. Brown broke through the lne, and ganed around the ends almost at wll, though Tech occasonally braced and held her heaver opponents nobly. Two more touchdowns were added n ths half, one goal beng kcked. Mllard made a beautful run of sxty yards from Brown's 5-yard lne, but tme was called before Brown could proft by the gan. Brown, 20; Tech, o. The second half was a repetton of the frst. Except for the magnfcent playng of Thomas and Curts, asssted by Andrews, Perkns, and Manahan, the score would have been far worse than t was. The rest of the team played a lstless game, whch was not excusable even n an uphll struggle. Brown scored three more touchdowns, and Donovan kcked two goals. Brown, 36; Tech, o. The team work of Brown far excelled ours. We, however, had several substtutes, whle Brown played the men aganst whom so much objecton has been rased. The teams lned up as follows: Brownrushers, Denson, Aldrch, Hastngs, Coombs, Smth, Nott, Robnson (Colby); quarter back, Donovan; half backs, Mllard, Casey (Hopkns); full back, McCarthy. Techrushers, Underwood, Newell, Washburn, Manahan, Robnson, Perkns, Parker; quarter back, Humphreys; half backs, Curts, Thomas; full back, Andrews. Referee, E. Weeks, Brown, '93. Umpre, Frank Mason, Harvard. Attendance, 800. Two 30-mnute halves. Last Thursday afternoon, as the result of a challenge sent by the Baker's Dozen, the Senor Chemsts, and Chemcal Engneers lned up aganst each other for a quanttatve analyss of the Clover feld. Course V. started wth the ball, but soon lost t by n-.: K:X--

TrHE TErCH 71 effectual attempts to break through the Baker's Dozen center. "Analyt" made a gan of ten yards around left end; "Appled Mechancs" was the sgnal for a smlar one about the rght end. The Chemsts then braced, but after hot resstance were forced by ther more mechancal opponents to ther o-yard lne. Here the ball was fumbled, and Lncoln made a fne run down the feld to Course X.'s o-yard lne, and would have made a touchdown but for a cramp. The half ended wth the ball n the center of the feld. Score o-o. n the second half, Clement scored a touchdown for Course X. after a pretty run. The punt-out faled. The playng was even for the rest of the game, the score remanng, Course X., 4; Course V., o. 16 72 ""r-n "TEC ThE rech. AGAN the mll has ground out ts annual supply of mssng caps, torn shrts, and straned muscles, and the Lounger can settle down n the serene certanty that another cane rush s well over. Just why the underclassmen evnce the most btter hatred for each other at these tmes, and then relapse nto unconcern for each other's exstence, has always been a matter of great speculaton to the Lounger. But as long as such condtons reman, the Lounger makes t hs annual task to wtness the fray, and to urge the laggng contestants to "get nto t." How many fantng hearts has he thus nduced to beleve that further exhauston wll add greatly to class fame. On these occasons, too, he has stfled many a reckless scrap, and held back many a mucker whose sympathetc efforts are extended to every contestant, and whose yells always mngle wth those of the Ruggles Street youngsters. The Lounger's sympathy s always wth the Freshmen, so he holds them especally worthy of commseraton just now. But although 'ts true that ths rush s over, ths game s lost, and ths opportunty for flag floatng s past for them, what of t? Just thnk of the poor weaklngs now strugglng wth the rudments of algebra who xvll become ther lawful prey n one short year! Surely the experence so btterly ganed by the Freshmen wll ad them n layng low these upstarts who have not yet started up! For present consolaton, the Lounger can only advse the Freshmen to dscover Howe '96 succeeded n recoverng lost property last year; and, n the sprt of true frendshp, he would warn them not to advertse n THE r' ECH for mssng artcles of clothng. The Lounger has lttle to say to the Sophomore. Hs great task, handed down from hs ancestors, s done, and the Lounger s glad. of t. The Sophomore may now carry hs cane, and hmself, as well, wth all the pomposty and darng of a Boston polceman,- untl the rush s forgotten. Thoughtless. Three sectons of Freshmen n Englsh sat, And of sentences remeded many, Tll at last the Professor wrote on the board, " thnk that but lttle f any " cannot remember the rest," he sad, " But that s enough for you; f you wshed to make that sentence correct, 3Pray tell me what you would do." Then a Freshman rose wth a doubtful ar, Whle the others breathless sat, And sad, " Professor, to make t just rght, thnk should leave out the ' that.'" N. T. D., '97. Ta()l(e) of a Shrt.
