TH the approach of examnatons comes word of a novel es- '4 _,/ perment orgnated by a Professor n Course. 'He wll._,.~. -.~ ~ ask each student n hs course to head ' -r. jhs paper wth answers to the questons, "Dd y o u study n any way for the examnaton on Sunclay? "and "What tme dd you retre last nght?" These questons, he says, are n no way prompted by relgous motves and are to be used smply to fnd out how general s the practce of Sunday studyng and of late nght xvork. The professor strongly advses aganst work on Sunday and aganst workng later than eght o'clock on the nght before an examnaton. " Rather spend the evenng before at the theatre and retre early, feelng fresher for the test of the succeedng day," he says. The agtaton produced by these questons should be productve of much good for both students and professors. f the student could realze, wthout consderng the queston from a relgous pont of vew, that after sx days of conscentous work the seventh passed wthout lookng nsde a text-book would make hm better prepared to resume work on Monday mornng; f the Professor could realze ths fact and correspondngly regulate the assgnments for Monday, t seems that both would have more cause to be satsfed wth the result at the end of the term. The effect of late nght work upon a student's examnaton paper, cannot fal to be harmful to hs work n the blue book. All the facts may be there, but the head s " lke a trunk packed n a hurry." Crammng may be of some assstance but there should be a good rest between such preparaton and the examnaton. Correctly used the plan s admrable and deservng of careful consderaton by both professors and students at ths tme. Tlhe next ssue of THEF TECH wll be on February 4 th. The artcles by the Professors wll then be contnued.

Grant to Company B.; G. E. Wllcomb and E. F. Jenkns to Company C.; M. E. Weaver and L. A. Russell to Company D. For some tme past, posters have been placed n the varous buldngs gvng notce of thle competton opened by Technque 19o2 to the Sophomore and Freshman Classes, n whch a copy of ths year's Tcchnque s offered to the '03 or 'o 4 man who hands n fve best grnds. There may be some uncer ty among the Freshmen as to what a " grnd "xpand how t should be worked up, but ths unyanty cannot extend to the Sophomore class, aht s hoped that the offer made by Technquel brng about an energetc competton. The Board of Drectors of the U. oma. A. A. have re-engaged George Woodruff as coach of the football team for the season of 9o wth the ttle of Head Coach. The Board also authorzed the appontment of graduate assstant coaches, lmted to sx, the appontments to be made by the Drectors. What the power of the assstant coaches wll be and the extent of Woodruff's authorty the Board has not fnally decded but t s sad that the head Coach wll probably be the fnal authorty n decdng upon the system to b)e used and the style of team-play, whle the assstants wll have charge of the development of ndvdual players, teachng them thoroughly the rudments of tle game and how to play ther ndvdual postons. Ths acton probably means the abandonment of the guard back play and that the Pennsylvana team wll agan reach her former standard. A Sure Thng. " 've got a great scheme to make money n Wall Street. All you've got to do s to b1uy when stocks are gong up and sell when they are gong down." " But how are you gong to tell whether they are gong up or down?" ", Wat and see."- Lzfe.

16 Tmw - a"te The Yale-Harvard track meet wll be held at New Haven ths year, probably on May. The Annnal Conventon of the New England ntercollegate Athletc Assocaton wll be held n Boston on Saturday, February 9 th. Grant of Pennsylvana, Hall of Brown, and Gallagher of Cornell wll run for the twomle ndoor champonshp of Amerca. Grant won ths event last year. A Brunswck newspaper dspatch states that at a meetng of the Bowdon Athletc Assocaton n December, " t was unan-, mously voted not to play Tufts, ether n baseball or football, the comng'year. Ths acton was taken on account of charges of professonalsm made aganst Tufts, and because at the close of the football game, whch Bowdon won from Tufts n November, the ball was kept by Tuft's men." The vote was taken on advce of the Athletc Commttee, composed of undergraduates and alumn. The Technology Basket-ball Team last Saturday defeated the Dean Academy Team by the large score of 22 to. Ths was M.. T.'s frst game, and we have reason to be proud of the excellent showng the men made. Dllon played the best game for Tech, but every one on the team played wth sprt. n consderaton of the fact, that Basket-ball s each year becomng more popular as an ntercollegate sport, and as all the larger colleges and most of the smaller ones are enthusastcally supportng ther teams, Tech men should show nterest n the work ther team s dong, and should gve t ther best' support. The twelfth annual ndoor athletc meet of the Boston Athletc Assocaton wll be held Saturday evenng, Feb. 6, at the Mechancs Buldng under the sancton of the A. A. A. Thle handcap events are the same as a year ago, ncludng forty-yard dash, 9 ft. lmt; 6oo-yard run, 30 yards lmt; 45-yard low hurdles, four flghts, 9 ft. lmt; ooo-yard run, 50 yards lmt; mle-run, 60 yards lmt; puttng 6-pound shot, 6 ft. lmt; hgh-jump, 6 nch lmt; three standng-jumps, ft. lmt. There wll be an nvtaton 40-yard.,dash, scratch. For novces there wll be a 40-yard dash, scratch, and a 440-yard run, scratch. As usual the chef feature of the meet wll be the team races. Matches have already been arranged between Harvard and the Unversty of Pennsylvana, between Cornell and Prnceton, between Amherst and Wllams, and between Andover and Exeter. Races are beng arranged between Dartmouth and Bowdon and between Brown and M.. T. Technology wll also be represented n the ndvdual events by a team chosen from those who made the best showng n our wnter meet. The events are open to all regstered athletes. Entres should be made wth John Graham, B. A. A. before Feb. 6. The followng table gves the number of men from Harvard, Yale, Prnceton and Pennsylvana who have been on the All- Amercan football teams for the last ten years, as chosen by Mr. Caspar Whtney. Besdes these four colleges Cornell and West Pont have each had two representatves durng ths perod, and Columba, Mchgan, and Lafayette one apece.. 18 170 THE- r'teo:h n evdence n the frst year class; ths year, he would ' lke to suggest that, although the Walker Buldng may not be a brllant example to place before Tech's youthful archtects, stll t would be decdedly out of place to project t nto the realms of free space at the present tnme, when all avalable fnancal ad s needed for the gymnasum. The two enterprsng Junors who'bravely attempted to concoct a preparaton of A No. dynamte, should travel out nto the wld woods and set up ther stlls beyond the reach of the polce and Tech nstructors. THE LOUNGER s ndeed glad to hear that one of the members or our august Faculty and a partcularly good frend of hs has declared n favor of an exam. theory whch has always been a source of great comfort to ts orgnator, THE LOUNGER. The aforementoned Professor beleves that better results are obtaned n the preparaton for the sem-annual ordeal f a man goes to the theatre on the evenng mmedately precedng the exam. Now ths has always been THE LOUNGER'S pet theory. He has practsed t for many years and the. proof of ts effcency les n the fact that he s stll at the nsttute. The Professor thnks that by workng steadly up to the evenng before the test and then changng one's.tran of thought by spendng the evenng at the theatre, better results are sure to follow n the examnaton bluebook. Now THE LOUNGER, as he has sad, agrees entrely wth the Professor, but he has one suggeston to make. f such a course would prove of such beneft to the students t seems as though the nsttute should take steps towards havng Tecnology nghts at all the theatres durng the examnatons. The Bursar mght dstrbute tckets from the lttle wndow that has so endeared tself to the hearts of all Tech men. And f ths theory works well at exam. tme why would t not be equally effcent all through the year? THE LOUNGER could surely, make better rectatons n Appled after hs mnd has been taken entrely off the subject for some tme. And f we are to have the sytem extend through the whole year perhaps the Corporaton would lease the Colonal before t becomes too popular and devote t to the use of the students. The character of attractons mght arouse some dscusson, but ths mght be left to the Bursar's dscreton. n whch case t would surely be perfectly satsfactory to all. t s always a source of pleasure to THE LOUNG;ER to notce that hs exhortatons are not wthout effect, and, accordngly, ths week he s delghted to announce that the rapd growth of nfantcsm has progressed as far as the Junor class. THE LOUNGER was called upon last year to remonstrate about the dangerous warlke propenstes whch were so strongly T}F LOUNGER felt a complcated conglomeraton of feelngs pass through hs bosom when he saw the latest addton made to the already well-flled Trophy room. THE LOUNGER has watched wth great nterest the advance of ths room, peopled at frst wth two banners and a cup, tll ts precncts were narrowed by the arrval of a Freshman football pcture and the Manager of the Muscal Clubs. THE LOUNGER cannot but smle when he notes the arrval of the Y. M. C. A. Advertsng Manager among such congenal company. He can see the ntense rvalry whch wll preval; the.aforementoned Muscal Club's manager publshng flarng posters; Technque puttng Tech war songs n evdence, and the Y. M. C; A. ssung tracts. THE LOUNGER gves forth ths tmely notce out of the goodness of hs heart, so that hs proteges, the Freshmen, may not be surprsed f, when descendng from Room 42, they should be sdetracked and coerced nto any old thng. t s seldom that one apprecates, or as THE LOUNG;ER'S frend, Professor B-t-s would say, "approocates," the practcal value of much that we beleve we beleve n the lne of " appled." t s only last week that THE LOUNGER brought to notce the example of Technology archtecture exemplfed n the Walker Buldng, as a type of what our archtectural department could endure. And t s wth the same feelng that he notces, as he daly passes through that wndng and obscure place known as Engneerng alley, the landscape feature on the left sde as one turns the corner of the fence to collde wth someone leavng the alley. Here we have somethng whch may be studed assduously wth great beneft. A smple constructon, t s true, but of what ngenuty. Consder the effectveness of the structure. For two years the rans and storms have faled to destroy ths monument. True, the wall now has a fne parabolcal curve, and the earth behnd t has sunk to the level of a course X. man's expectatons to get through hs exams. But the sagacty shown n such a feature s enough to balance all ts weaknesses. Week by week, we may expect to see that wooden wall bulge more and more, but what of that? The alley s well paved, and t were a fastdous ndvdual who should wsh to use the plank walk.
