OR the comng nauguraton of our new Presdent the wsh has been expressed both by hm and by the commttee n charge of arrangements to make the affar as successful and as representatve as possble. Accordng to the present arrangement the entre floor of Symphony Hall has been reserved for the undergraduate body and the nstructng staff. The seatng capacty of the hall beng- about twelve hundred, t s mportant that the undergraduates attend n full strength. ' t s really to be an auspcous occason, and one- whch wll show n strong relef the nterest and regard n whch the nsttute s held by her students, and the showng must be representatve of the school. The nsttute Commttee s to act as a medum between the students and the commttee n charge of arrangements. The nauguraton s to be held on the twenty-fourth of ths month, and THE TECH wll gve a full account of the proceedngs. TH ths week's ssue of THE TECH a change n the edtoral staff wll be notced. The edtor-nchef-shp has passed to Mr. Henry H. Saylor, and the assstant edtorn-chef-shp to Mr. J. Clyde Frut. Mr. Adams and Mr. Sawyer's resgnatons are due to the extra pressure of work on Technque.,,l HE TECH regrets exceedngly that the Sophomores should have started agan the practce of " rushng" the Freshmen n the corrdors of the nsttute buldngs. Every member of the class knows that t s a thng dstnctly dsapproved of by the Faculty, and a thng whch has brought much trouble upon classes whch have tred t prevously. t s a thng that can not be stopped by the offcers and a few members of the class passng resolutons, because t s a fact, and THE TECH s sorry that t s so, that some of the offcers of the class were as much nterested n creatng a dsturbance as any of the -rest. t must be stopped by each

"MB ndvdual member of the class pledgng hmself to cause no such dsorder n the future. f " rushng" must be done, the lower classmen should at least be gentlemen and wat untl the Cane Rush, whch s provded for just that purpose. For the honor of the class, at least, the Sophomores should not create the mpresson that they are tryng to fnd new felds for dsorder, when they should be dong ther best to efface the results of last year's trouble. The nsttute Exhbt at the Pars Exposton. t was announced last wnter that the nsttute of Technology and Cornell nversty had been nvted, as representatve nsttutons of ther knd n the nted States, to send exhbts to the Exposton nverselle, now beng held n Pars. The French government surely does not regret the choce t made. The nsttute exhbt s a remarkably good one, and reflects great credt on those who had the matter n charge, notwthstandng the fact that a consderable part of the materal sent had to be lad asde, owng to the lmted amount of space allotted. One of the promnent features s shown by the Archtectural Department, and comprses prze work of varous knds executed by students of that department, handsomely mounted n four large oak frames, wth plate glass fronts. The Scentfc Departments are represented by photographs of the buldngs, laboratores, apparatus, and summer school partes, besdes volumes contanng problems assgned to students of the several classes. There are also metal and wood specmens whch have undergone varous tests n the Engneerng laboratores. The nsttute s to be congratulated on the excellence of ths exhbt, and the honor of beng chosen to show the hgh standard reached by the scentfc nsttutons of ths country. Trab: Requrements for Voters. Professor Rpley has been beseged by students ths fall who wshed to know whether they could vote n Boston or would have to return home n November to cast a ballot for ther Presdental choce. He has asked THE TECH to publsh a statement of the requrements. Mr. C. S. Ward, '72, a counsellor at law here n Boston, has kndly furnshed the desred nformaton. st. A man, to be able to vote, must be a natve or naturalzed ctzen of the nted States. 2d. He must be twenty-one years or more of age. 3d. He must have been assessed somewhere n the Commonwealth on May, 9oo00. 4 th. He must regster where he has been assessed, before the regsterng lst closes. - 5th. He must pay a poll tax of $2.00 n that place n order to have hs name on the votng lst. Archtectural Socety Catalogue. The catalogue of the premated drawngs of the archtectural department for 9o00 has just been ssued, and the book s certanly a credt to the Archtectural Socety, under whose management t s ssued. The cover desgn n color, by F. H. Bond, Jr., 'O, s partcularly good, but the prntng dd not show t up to the best advantage. The subject-matter of the book s practcally the same as that of last year, comprsng theses drawngs, lfe class work, and pen and nk renderngs. Several new features have been added to the last ssue. Two drawngs from the students n the engneerng opton appear, and the advertsng pages are made more nterestng by the nserton of the summer school measured drawngs. n sze, the catalogue s somewhat larger than the ssue of last year, and on the whole s a better pece of work.

C---L--YCf YP-9- LlLLM Y A Vst to Shoshone Falls. The Snake Rver rses n Wyomng near the head waters of the Yellowstone, flows wth a broad curve through southern daho and then after havng formed the boundary between daho and ts western neghbors, Oregon and Washngton, for nearly two hundred mles t passes nto Washngtc, and at a dstance of a lttle more than one hunded mles untes wth the Columba. The total dstance traversed n ts wndng course s approxmately nne hundred mles. ts head waters have an alttude above sealevel of about eght thousand feet, nearly two thousand feet hgher than the hghest pont n New England. Through southern daho t flows through a broad valley, a hundred mles or more n wdth, whose entre expanse s covered wth thck flows of lava. The alttude of the rver above sea-level through ths porton of ts course vares from sx thousand feet at the northeast to less than three thousand at the west whle at ts juncton wth the Columba t s about eght hundred feet. n the summer of 892 a party n charge of the wrter made a trp for the purposes of geologcal study across the contnent gong va Northern Pacfc R. R. and returnng va-canadan Pacfc. Durng ths trp the mportant places vsted were the ron and copper regons of Mchgan; the Yellowstone Park; the mnes of Butte, Montana; Shoshone Falls; the Coeur d'alene regon; the Columba Rver Falls; Mt. Hood wth ts glacers; Puget Sound; the Great Glacer of.the Selkrks and the Canadan Hot Sprngs at Banf. At Butte, Montana, we had been entertaned by Charles W. Goodale of '75 and Wll Adams of '78. Wthout ther assertons we should scarcely have recognzed that Butte s a most desrable place n whch to lve. Wth ts entre absence of vegetaton, both outsde and wthn the houses, completely bare, brown and dusty yards, there were no gardens, t seemed to us a cty n a desert, a pcture of desolaton n spte of the teemng populaton, the busy mnes and furnaces. t s to these last that the desolaton s due. They pour so much sulphur from the ores nto the atmosphere all the tme that all plant lfe s klled. The vst to the Shoshone Falls was a dgresson from our man route as we were to return to Butte before contnung our journey. We left Butte for ths extended and most nterestng sde trp at seven o'clock on the mornng of June 27. Passng frst along the sde of the Slver Bow Rver and then crossng the low dvde between ths and the Beaver Head or Jefferson Rver, besde whch we rode for some dstance, we found the scenery rather unnterestng. Then we crossed the grand contnental dvde, the summt of the Rockes, so announced by a huge sgn-board, and passed nto daho. -roh l 19 The crossng of the Rocky Mountans at ths pont s as tame and unnterestng as t s at Sherman on the non Pacfc ralway. As pupls n school, and stll later at the nsttute, n spte of the reteraton of our nstructor that our conceptons were not true, we all receved the mpresson that the summt crest of a mountan range must be sharp and ragged wth steep slopes lke those of an ordnary house, f not steeper. But when one has once crossed at Sherman, the grand back-bone of our contnent, that early mpresson s forever oblterated and n crossng agan on the way from Butte, the change of vew s confrmed. nstead of a sharp rdge or crest wth steep slopes we fnd a low undulatng topography, almost a plan n ts smplcty. The only thng to attest ts elevaton beng ts entre lack of trees and most vegetaton. We descended from the dvde nto the valley of the Snake Rver, whch at frst s narrow; we passed through a small canyon just above Beaver Canyon, but very soon t broadens out nto a wde, extensve plan of lava, whch often retans a fresh appearance as though t had poured out from the depths of the earth but a very short tme ago. Occasonally small crater-cones were seen but n general t was one monotonous dead level, releved only by the mountans n the far dstance wth the sentnel-lke peaks of the Tetons towerng above all and formng huge landmarks for all travellers. At Pocatello we changed cars, havng so far been travellng drectly toward Ogden and Salt Lake Cty, to the Oregon Shore Lne whch, runnng drectly from the man lne of the non Pacfc ralway to the Columba Rver and Portland, follows the Snake Rver for more than four hundred mles through southern daho, occasonally crossng t or followng closely along ts banks, often bendng away to a dstance of twenty-fve or thrty mles. We left the tran at quarter after seven o'clock n the evenng at the lttle vllage of Shoshone, the nearest approach to the Falls whch are some twenty-fve mles away. The hotel at whch we had to spend the nght was a very prmtve affar, n spte of whch however, we obtaned a very good supper. Not so much, however, can be sad for the remander of ts entertanment. The rooms and beddng were n such condton that we preferred to reman outsde on an upper verandah enjoyng as long as possble the beautful moonlght. When once wthn we consdered that darkness was more conducve to comfort than would be the ablty to see our surroundngs so we dspensed wth all lght on retrng. Not a lttle to our astonshment we found ourselves stll n our beds when we awoke next mornng. At 8.30 A. M. we began the twenty-fve mle drve to the Falls our party beng accommodated n 6ne open and one covered wagon. As we drove away from the 'vllage the broad, level plan upon whch

20 TE"; TE;OCH we, and even the vllage, were but specks stretched away n all drectons wth nothng to break the monotony. Far away to the south n front of us we caught the dm outlne of mountans and turnng to look back toward the north we saw the horzon then bounded by the same ragged outlne. Between these dstant ranges on the north and on the south lay ths great plan, the broad valley of the Snake Rver, a quet frozen sea, whch once was molten lava. Some of ths lava may be, as has been suggested, comparatvely recent n ts orgn but most of t s probably more nearly a few hundred thousand years n age 'though n geologcal language stll very recent. From ten thousand to ffteen thousand square mles watch the wheels revolve. As hour after-hour passed our glances at the landscape alone dd not ndcate to us that we had ganed or lost n our journey. When we saw a short dstance off at the rght of the road a small shrub, three or four feet n heght we greeted t as one greets an old frend when met n a foregn land. A stranger n a strange land t ndeed seemed, the only shrub seen n the journey. Wth nothng to ndcate ts presence tll we lterally stood upon ts brnk and were lookng down nto ts depths we suddenly found a ggantc rft n the plan extendng drectly across our path. Wthn ts depth we heard the roar of waters, but saw at frst only a placd surface. Leavng our carrages'we went ( m 1 - a p QTrn QTnNT1 ul-vclrr V ^ H TV&B T T of southern daho s bured by ths lava to a depth sometmes of many hundred feet. As we passed on the monotony of the landscape became very tresome. The surface of ths lava s scarcely decomposed at all, often lookng as fresh as though poured out but a few months ago, very lttle or no sol has been formed, or havng been formed the wnds have swept t away. The clmate s dry and no vegetaton exsts except the scatterng tufts of sage-grass wth ts dull brown colors, and cactus wth ts brght red, jellow and occasonally whte flowers. To apprecate that we had changed postonr and were really movng we had occasonally to look at the horses' legs as they moved forward n' easy trot or fo to a more convenent pont of observaton and here saw the famous GC;-t Shoshone Falls drectly below us. Gazng,' almost Wth awe, for a few mnutes we.soon retraced our steps to the carrages and began the descent nto the canyon through a sharp nche whch Nature had kndly provded as a means of access to one of her greatest wonders. The descent s very steep, toward up stream tll nearly at the bottom the -road makes a very sharp angular turn and reaches the level of the rver only a few- feet from the brnk, of the Falls. The hotel for the accommodat6n of vstors s on the opposte bank and we had l'cross over n a ferry-boat, that s attached to a strong cable extendng from bank to bank across the l

~fd "= VM 40bS rver and whch s worked by hand. Drftwood had accurulated around the boat to such an amount that t requred some tme to clear t away, the drvers and myself assstng the ferryman n ths work and also n workng the boat across the stream. As the mercury regstered the temperature at 3 6Q when exposed- to the sun ths was no slght 'task. The ferry crosses the rver just above the brnk of the Falls, so near that a stone can easly be thrown from ts deck over the brnk nto the depths below. Wth the remembrance of'the power of the rapds for a long dstance above the Falls of the Nagara n mnd ths seems at frst glance a most dangerous proceedng but we found as we proceeded on the way that the current here s scarcely stronger than n a large mll pond just above the dam, n fact the surface of the water here s lke -that of a lake n ts placdty. The cause of ths s not at frst apparent but a lttle nvestgaton readly reveals t. A natural barrer runs entrely across the stream at ths pont and really forms a great dam over whch the water pours between a seres of projectng ponts on ts upper edge whch form, slands n the stream. Once wthn the- hotel, a change of clothng, a bath and a good dnner dspelled the wearness arsng from the length and monotony of our rde but the ntense heat prevented gong out tll late n the afternoon. The hotel s bult just at the edge of the Falls and constantly subjected to the jar and vbratons produced by the rush and roar of ther waters. n order to apprecate Shoshone Falls a comparson wth Nagara Falls s of great assstance. As one follows the Nagara from Buffalo down the rver the surface of, ts waters s but slghtly below the level of the surroundng country, then plungng over the Falls, they drop a heght of about one hundred and sxty feet and flow on for a dstance of seven mles through a gorge varyng from sx hundred to twelve hundred feet n wdth, though at the Falls the rver has an extreme wdth of nearly four thousand eght hundred feet, and a depth varyng from one huhdred and eghty to two hundred and ffty feet. The Snake Rver as t approaches Shoshone Falls has already flowed through a canyon for more than ffty mles whch has a depth of about one hundred and eghty feet and wdth three tmes that of the Nagara gorge. The rver tself at the Falls has a wdth of nne hundred feet. Just above the man'-fall the rver s dvded by slands nto sx small streams and falls about thrty or forty feet. mmedately t re-untes and plunges n a sngle leap of two hundred and ffty feet to the canyon below whch now has a depth of over four hundred feet and whch contnues for a very great dstance. Forty-fve mles below Shoshone Falls the Snake agan drops twenty feet at Salmon Falls. Toward nght we walked down stream a short dstance, ascendng to the upper level, and obtaned a fne vew of the Falls. The next mornng we descended by means of steep paths, ladders and wre ropes to the level of the rver below the Falls. 'The vew here s very mpressve and remnds one of Nagara from the Canadan sde, huge volumes of spray and mst arsng n great clouds and shuttng out the vew. Farther down stream a more complete vew was obtaned gvng a comprehensve grasp of all the surroundngs. Returnng to the upper surface agan we found the heat so great that the entre 'party except the wrter confned themselves to the house for the remander of the day. n spte of the heat a vst was made by the wrter alone to the farthest pont down stream from whch the Falls could be seen from the plan above. Here standng on a pont of lava projectng nto the course of the canyon and at the level of the lava plan tself the grand vew obtaned well repad the effort, for from ths pont s obtaned the best concepton of not only the rver and the Falls, but of the relaton of the canyon and the vast plans of lava through whch t has been cut. Far away to the eastward, upstream, the plan stretches as far as the eye can reach -bounded only by the horzon. On the north and the south the dstant mountans seem no nearer or farther away than they dd at Shoshone vllage though we were twenty-fve mles, nearer the one and farther from the other. Through ths vast plan the rver could be seen flowng n ts deep canyon to the Falls over whch t fell wth a roar rvallng that of Nagara and then passng on n the stll deeper canyon beneath our feet tll out of sght n the west where agan only the sky bounded the plan. Dfferng entrely from Nagara or the Yellowstone n ts surroundngs Shoshone s perhaps from ths pont more mpressve than ether. n a cooler part of the day the remander of the party took!a short, walk but were content to get only those vews that were close at hand. A few eagles that had nests around the Falls added a pcturesque feature to the scenery but the rattlesnakes whch were sad to abound dd not add to the charm of walkng or scramblng. However, though often alarmed by excted nerves, and the rustle of a leaf or of dry grass we saw none around the Falls. On the plan above our drvers klled three durng our stay. Leavng Shoshone Falls early. on the mornng of June 30, we returned across the plan to Shoshone vllage, where we took the tran at noon for Pocatello and there changng, "took a sleeper for Butte, where after a most pleasant nght's rest we arrved early the next mornng n the mdst of a severe ran. We smply stopped n Butte long enough for breakfast and thenr proceeded on our way westward. The Shoshone Falls ncdent was closed. GEORGE H. BARTON.

22 th- SE EOH.c11'l, Mr. N. H. Camp, '03, has gone to Yale ths year. The Cane Rush wll probably be held on Thursday, Nov. 22, at the South End Grounds. Sx men are takng Ffth year work n the archtectural course. The annual electon of offcers by the Sophomore Class for the comng year wll be be held n Rogers corrdor, on Frday, October 2th, from 8.30 A. M. to 4.30 p. M. The leaders and managers of the muscal clubs are selectng new men and rapdly fllng the clubs to the requred quota. Rehearsals of all the clubs begn ths week and t s earnestly requested that all men be present at each rehearsal. The Chauncy Hall Club held ts frst meetng on Tuesday, October 9 th. The followng offcers for the year were elected: Presdent, J. Ross Bates, '02; Vce-Presdent, Doyle, '04: Secretary and Treasurer, R. S. Frankln, '02; Member of Executve Commttee, H. H. Fletcher, '02. Meetngs wll be held durng the year for socal purposes. The nomnees for the varous offces of the class of 1902 are as follows: For Presdent, H. O. Bosworth and L. S. Cates; for Frst Vce-Presdent, K. T. Stow and F. H. Hunter; for Second Vce-Presdent, Paul Hansen and G. S. Taylor; for Secretary, C. W. Kellogg, Jr. ; for Treasurer, C. R. Place; for Drectors; C. H. Boardman, Jr.; F. Gannett, and R. B. Pendergast; for nsttute Commttee, J. C. Frut, J. M. Baker, R. A. Pope and. R. Adams. Freshmen Class Meetng. Last Frday at P. M. the Freshmen class was called to order for the frst tme by H. O. Bosworth, Presdent of the class of '02, n order to elect a temporary Charman and Secretary. A large body of the class of '03, evdently from force of habt, responded to the notce to the Freshmen, but the most of them were persuaded to reman outsde. Enough got n however, to close nomnatons for charman, after one nomnaton, and to nomnate two temporary secretares to the freshmen's one before those nomnatons were closed. At ths pont the Freshmen waked up, and, pullng together, they, aded by the charman's closely rulng out other classmen and requrng each canddate to obtan credentals at the offce, managed to open nomnatons for charman and to add three nomnatons for that offce. As the course seems fxed, however, t s hoped that the drlls and practcal work can be made nterestng and not altogether monotonous, and that the lectures wll cover ponts that may be useful to the average young man, even f he s never drectly connected wth the army or mlta n any way n after lfe. The object of the school was, the study, of colonal work prevously undrawn. A day of prelmnary work was spent n old Kng's Chapel, Boston, after whch the school left for Provdence, R.., for a week's trp. Here the Frst Baptst Church, the Rufus Green Manson, the Carrngton House, and some half dozen dfferent doorways were measured and sketched durng the day and worked up nto fnshed plates n the evenng. For the 'two weeks. followng, the school made ts headquarters at the nsttute'perce Buldng, workng on the' unfnshed Provdence work and makng bcycle trps -to such places as Wayland, Weston, Concord and Lexngton. Although Technology dd not wn last Saturday's game wth Exeter, we have every reason to be satsfed wth the te score, as last season, after two games had been played and the team was supposed to be n good condton, practcally the same Exeter team defeated Tech, 24 to o. The game was nterestng throughout, the result beng n doubt untl the very end, as Exeter made her only touchdown n the last three seconds of play. Both teams are coached by Dartmouth graduates-and ther style of play smlar. They played aggressve, straght football, but at tmes ther work was decdedly loose - Exeter's fumbles at crtcal tmes gvng Tech. her touchdown. Maxson dd the kckng for Technology, and on each exchange of punts managed to gan from 20 to 30 yards for hs team, Chubb and Crocker fllng the end postons fnely and always comng down the feld well on punts. Laws and Hlson also played ther postons well, Tech's weakness beng at both tackles. n the second half, T. M. Maxson made the longest runs of the game, one of ffty yards, through the Exeter team, almost resultng n another touchdown for Tech. The frst score was made by the M.. T. after sxteen mnutes of play. 18 28, ; 4 - N,., 4 THE LONGER has been nterested to note that a popular professor of Physcs has entered upon a change of tactcs ths year. Formerly t was hs custom to eject obstreperous and otherwse annoyng nfdels from the precncts of scentfc knowledge-- otherwse known as 22 Walker. Ths year he has reversed the process and s keepng the offenders fastened n the room so tghtly that not only they, but none of the other anmate objects can escape - not even the ar. Ths was the means resorted to on the occason of the frst dsturbance n Sophomore Physcs; how effectve t was only those who experenced t can say. Sghs, groans, wals, - all were of no effect; stll the professor went on, moppng every other mnute hs damp,. persprng brow. At last the agony became too ntehse for even a physcst to stand, and after havng vaguely heard hm announce that he thought he had gven the class about as much as they could endure for the frst day, the class made a break for the door. The result was awful to contemplate. At ths nopportune moment some one made the announcement that the freshmen were about to hold a class meetng. The effect was nstantaneous; a stream of three hundred men poured from one buldng to another, up stars, struck aganst the rotund form of Jantor John and recoled. Then occurred a seance whch THE LONGER was unfortunately compelled to attend: held n Huntngton Hall, under the auspces of the venerable presdent of the Junor Class. The rappng was all done by that gentlemen, and though the effort completely runed a handsome new text-book, nevertheless.the LONGER was unable, and he was seated near the front, to perceve even the slghtest vbraton on the drum of hs ear. He saw the book rse, swftly descend, strke the table and rebound. He saw the table vbrate, and the aforementoned medum grow pale from the force of the blow, but never a sound reached hm from that book. THE LONGER says ths because he does not want t thought that he dd not hear any sounds; the trouble was he heard too many. The howls of -the baffled Sophs, as a certan gentlemen from the Secretary's offce meandered round, and, tappng some of.them on the shoulder, gently requested that -they cease to permeate the assembly wth ther condescendng presence; the cres of joy from the same quarter when ther accomplces, nomnated for offce n the Freshman Class, came trottng back from the Secretary wth certfcates of membershp n the class of 'o4. THE LONGER magnes that many of these certfcates were genune enough, but he contends that they dd not make the possessor a Freshman. THE LONGER can hear the yells of " Order," when a wellknown, fully ntalled football -manager started to converse wth the medum n a stage whsper. THE LONGER can apprecate the thankful look on the physognomy of the gentle presdent when the sttng was over. THE LONGER could also go deeper and say he could sympathze wth and express fully the thoughts of the same gallant defender of the door, but the weather s warm enough already. THE LONGER wshes to make the most hunble apology wthout delay for a grave error n judgment. He has always been thoroughly mbued wth the dea that Technology's great and only organ, THE-TECH, was not apprecated. He was begnnng to thnk, n spte of all nsde evdence to the contrary, that many of hs erstwhle readers looked upon the organ as more closely resemblng a hurdy-gurdy. But no! All these nghtmares have been dspelled by the encouragement of one of THE LONGER'S protegds, who, as he walked up to nvest n No., asked n a tmd voce, "Are they ffty cents apece?" When THE LONGER penned hs honest and most approprate thoughts last week regardng the abundance of new edtons whch make ther appearance two or three tmes n -a whle he thought wth. much complacency that he was done wth the subject. Of course not the subject treated of n the aforementoned edtons.) But now, as the last waxed-paper tube on the camel's back, appears an entrely new work called somethng lke "An Elementary Prmer for Cold" (cash). For those who swng the archtectural pencl, the same s publshed n a neat vest pocket-edton, occupyng some three hundred sxty cubc nches, to be purchased at a cost resemblng ts sze. THE LONGER sncerely hopes that he may not be called upon to speak of ths agan. n the event of much more such agtaton he may feel t, hs duty to - change the text book system, or perhaps even to do away wth t entrely. Jack (out of breath): just saw a crowd of men tearng up th-the street. Dan (excted ): Why, what's the matter? Jack: They were puttng n a-- a sewer. - Wrnkle. t A
