'f LTHOGH the Departments of Hstory and Economcs would be glad to welcome all students who wsh to use the lbrary n A\~1 ;~ Room 40, t s mpos- ~~' sble owng to the ' crowded condton of affars to permt the lbrary to be used as a general study room. -[t~,%the Freshman class, n partcular, s provded wth accommodatons n the drawng rooms and the readng room, for the study of mathematcs and modern languages. ntl other arrangements are made t s hghly desrable that Room 40 should be reserved for the specal use of students n hstory, lterature, and economcs. 3HROGH the courtesy of the "Technque" Board of Edtors a bref two hours has been accorded us n whch to revew and crtcse the product of ther labors, the college annual for ths year. Yet n the bref nspecton we have been able to gve t we feel that we can do t full justce, for such s ts make-up that ts vrtues are strkng, ts faults glarng, and ts commonplaceness extensve. The '94 " Technque" appears n a most attractve dress, and has met wth a large and well-deserved sale. t s a much larger volume than the llustrated catalogue ssued last year, and of about the same sze as the effort of the class of '92. The analogy to the '92 "Technque" s most strkng. Wth the excepton of a few specal features-the most attractve portons of the whole book such as the hstory of the nsttute, and of ts three Presdents, and a more ambtous mscellaneous department together wth a better arrangement coped n the man from the volume of last year, the standard set by '92, whle t s certanly not mproved on, s-and many wll, doubtless, consder ths a great complment-closely adhered to. t s far too easy n a general crtcsm to wrte harshly, but a bref revew of the whole may accomplsh " better results." The class hstores are certanly good, f we except that of'95, whch does not rse above medocrty. The varous hstores already mentoned together wth the trbute to Professor Letang, are worthy of great prase both for ther ncepton and ther executon. The course hstores, agan revved, do not rse above former standards, and are at tmes monotonous. They are llustrated, however, n the best of taste. The mscellaneous department s well vared and n the man nterestng. t must be acknowledged, how-

!32 2THE TECHo. ever, that much that s trte has found ts way nto these columns, and that the verse s far too much n parody. The musc we refran from crtcsng. Our offce does not boast a pano. n ts commonplace features, ths "Technque" s fully up to the average. ts statstcs are complete and well arranged. All the departments of our socal lfe receve due attenton. The llustratons, always an mportant feature, are none the less so n ths volume. Great credt accrues to the artstc staff, although at tmes t must be sad ts members have fallen short of the deal, and one artst t would seem needs to be nformed that evenng dress s not good form at afternoon receptons. Nnety-two made ths mstake too, by the way. One crtcsm we regret to make, but t must be sad. n places ths book lacks the dgnty that we have the rght to expect n t. But enough. The '94 "Technque" has many, many vrtues. t wll please the Tech student, and n dong so wll accomplsh ts msson. t should not be forgotten that there were tryng crcumstances n ts producton, although ths possbly does not act as an excuse, as we hear that much of the best work wthn ts covers was produced under ths very stress of bad luck; and, moreover, we can none of us be perfect. (f5 E feel t our duty to call attenton to the excellence of our muscal organzatons and the dscouragng condtons under whch they labor. Last year the Glee and Banjo Clubs attempted to make short tours throughout New England. They were so lttle known that men could not be found to run concerts n dfferent places for a share of the profts, f such there should be. As a result, our clubs "starred" on ther own hook, and ended the season seventy-fve dollars n debt. Ths year, lkewse, no one wll assume the fnancal responsblty of runnng concerts for a porton of the proceeds, smply because our clubs have no reputaton, and are not lkely to attract large audences. t seems dsgraceful that ths should be the case when our present organzatons stand so hgh among college clubs. Even n Boston are they slghted. Amherst can come here and receve a great puff n all the papers; Technology can do-fully as well and have no attenton pad to her. Such s the farness of the Boston press. The recepts from the home concert, however, may render the clubs more ndependent n ther attempt to make a successful tour. N another column s a crtcsm of an ed- A toral whch appeared last week, n regard to the selfsh reservng of chars n the lunch room. Our correspondent states that he who comes frst s seldom wated on frst. Very true, and most unfortunate. Yet the man wth the most " cheek" here obtans hs lunch frst, just as he gets along best everywhere. Many tmes have we seen a man push through two or three rows of hungry students, and, by rasng hs voce a lttle, receve hs lunch whle the rest stand around and wat for another to do the same thng. He commands both our detestaton and our respect. However, the watresses do ther best under the crcumstances whch are such at tmes as to confuse the clearest head. Be that as t may, affars would be facltated by the seatng of those who do obtan somethng to eat. Surely one selfsh act should not excuse another; then why ought a char to reman dle just because he who " came frst" s unable to use t? And very often men who deserves chars on the prorty prncple are crowded out here as they are at the counter. But we cannot afford space to dscuss the matter further. Suffce t to say that all should seek the best good for all, and that n the lunch room s certanly obtaned by observng "frst served, frst seated." We hope to see both the selfsh man and the unoccuped char "sat on." e r. H F E

THEA TECH2 233 t HAT we are to have an nsttute dnner seems to be an establshed fact. We cannot blame the Junors for feelng as they evdently do n ths matter, snce t would undoubtedly be consdered a dscredt to the class, by the unthnkng person, at least, f they were the frst to omt a custom, pleasant though rather expensve. The present arrangement seems to be the only feasble method of makng the affar self-supportng, and thus merts our commendaton. t becomes rather tedous, ths contnual exhortaton to attend Technology dnners, games, and entertanments; however, the arguments n favor of the nsttute dnner are of such weght that we can but urge every one to consder the advantages to be derved by attendng t, then to balance up hs cash, be economcal for a couple of weeks, and fnally to nvest the requste amount n a tcket to our Technology dnner. E cannot express too strongly our apprecaton of the fact that the Faculty desre to exhbt socal Technology to the publc. All of us deprecate the general "msnformaton" concernng ths part of our college lfe; and now t remans for each one to do hs share toward mprovng the exstng condtons. The nsttute commttee have undertaken an enormous work. f successful, the result wll be to rase Technology n the opnon of nnumerable people; to prove that the nsttute s not the rallyng pont of farmers, wheelwrghts, and blacksmths; to show that the same earnestness pervades our socal undertakngs that characterze our studess. But they must fal unless supported by the entre student body. The matter desred s scattered everywhere, and must be collected wthn the next two weeks. f photographs are wanted, be patrotc enough to contrbute them; f nformaton s desred, furnsh t. And don't always wat to be urged, or even asked; antcpate the needs and lghten the labors of "our commttee." Professor Cross has kndly called our attenton to the collecton of books on Photography n the Physcs Lbrary. Although the collecton s by no means complete, t s well chosen and growng. Among ts hundred and twenty volumes are Amercan, Englsh, French and German works flled wth graphc llustratons and ncludng nearly every phase of photography. Photography for amateurs and scentsts, for chemsts, engneers, archtects, draughtsmen, surveyors, and for general students as well, may all be found there. n short, students of every course at the nsttute wll do well to mprove ths opportunty to learn more of an art so closely connected wth ther work. Durng the past week the Lbrary Department has bused tself collectng bound volumes of the theses of the class of '92, n pr-eparaton for the Technology exhbt at the Columban Exposton. Of the one hundred and eleven new books receved from March 23 to March 3, only the followng, placed n the General Lbrary, are of specal nterest. Dctonnare unversal d'hstore et de geographe. N. Boullet. Dctonnare unversal llustre bgographque et bblographque de la France contemporane. J. Lermna. There are at present 433 current magaznes receved by the nsttute whch are dstrbuted as follows General Lbrary, 3; Engneerng, 2; Physcs, 45; General Studes, oo; Arch. 26; Chem. 57; Bol. 33; Geol. 6; Lowell Sch. Desgn, 6. We hope that the students n each course wll at least learn whch are the leadng magaznes of ther department. Space permts us to menton but one artcle of pecular nterest to Tech. men, namely: "The nfluence of Machnery upon Employment" n the Pol. Scence Quarterly, for March.

234 -'r1- R 1', n ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TH The Glee and Banjo Club Concert. OR Glee and Banjo Clubs have come, been heard, and conqured. Well may we be proud of them. Mr. George L. Lansng, who has nstructed the Harvard as well as the Tech Banjo Clubs, says ours s the best college club n New England. Mr. Grover, one of the most promnent banjosts n the country, pronounces our club the fnest of all the many college banjo clubs he has heard. The Glee Club s not far behnd. What more could we wsh save to have these facts known and apprecated? Last Saturday evenng saw Huntngton Hall comfortably flled wth sx or seven hundred of Boston's belles wth ther gallant escorts. Nearly every number receved at least one well-merted encore. t would be hard to pck out the most deservng selectons for all were of the best; yet, perhaps those most apprecated were performed by the tro,-h. M. Phllps, mandoln, F. S. V. Sas, gutar, and C. E. Stamp, zthern, and by Mr. H. M. Mott-Smth on the cello. These men would grace almost any muscal entertanment. The M.. T. waltz by Mr. Blss and the Glee Club was very pretty, and was most enthusastcally receved. truly the same may be sad of all. The duets by Messrs. Shepard and Howe were a fne exhbton of banjo playng. We have but two crtcsms of the concert to make -the lack of sutable encores, and an unnecessary laggng, especally the delays between numbers. t s hardly poltc, as a rule at least, to repeat a selecton, no matter how enthusastcally receved. An audence desres varety even n an encore; of course t s dffcult to obtan new and "spcy" peces n great number, yet we recommend more attenton to that detal. For the delays there s really no excuse. On the other hand, we must commend the excellent work of both clubs, even under tryng and dscouragng condtons. Ther unconcern and ease durng the performance were unusual. TEH GOMMNGAJlONS. The Edtors do not hold themselves respousble for opnons exfressed by correspondents. To THE EDTORS OF THE TECH: - n the ssue of THE TECH dated March 2 3 d, you publshed a short crtcsm of the habt of reservng seats n the lunch room; but you overlooked the true mert of ths system. Naturally, the man who comes frst nto the lunch room expects to be accommodated frst. On a busy day hs comng frst s no guarantee that he wll be served frst, as thngs are at present; but t certanly ought to secure hm a seat ahead of a man ten mnutes later than he. t s true a fellow may, by turnng up a char, cause other students to eat ther lunches standng up; but these evdently must be students who came n later than he dd, and were served earler. f ths system of reservng chars were abolshed, t would smply gve the seats to those lucky enough to attract frst the attenton of a water. At a restaurant the frst comer s the frst seated, though not always the frst served. The lunch room s really a restaurant, n whch we take a double rle of water and guest. Must the guest stand untl the water s suppled at the ktchen? Such a proceedng would hardly be endured at Young's or Parker's, and ought not to be even n our humble lunch room. R. S. H., '96. The nsttute Commttee. TE last meetng of the Commttee on March 30th was the most mportant one up to date. The trophy room commttee reported that our desres n that drecton wll be fulflled as soon as the necessary space s forth comng, the Corporaton already havng consdered the need of an adequate readng room. The commttee on a unform pn stated that three dfferent men n the nsttute are sellng Tech pns for the money to be obtaned, and rather than favor any one man they recommend the adopton of a new and mproved desgn; they wll nvestgate further. The Ph Belta Kappa Commttee found the members of that Socety on the Faculty were n favor of a chapter here. The next meetng of the Fraternty Government to consder ap- F l K! e R t l m E!! m

Kng, '94, was apponted correspondent for the l)cnver Re Aublcan and the Boston B]udget. Presdent Walker, Secretary Tyler, and Professor Dewey were present at the meetng, and each spoke upon the plan for the students' exhbt at the World's Far. They desre the nsttute Commttee to comple a porttfolo, llustratng Tech's socal lfe. Ths, after due consderaton, the commttee voted to attempt wth a realzaton of the attendant responsblty, but also aware of the great good whch must result therefrom f successfully completed. Charles A. Meade, Raymond B. Prce, and Charles W. Dckey, were elected to supervse the work. To facltate matters, each member of the commttee receved some specal assgnment, as follows: the Co-operatve Socety and Class Day, A. F. Bems; nsttute Commttee, THE TECH, "Technque," R. B. Prce; fraterntes, socetes, and local organzatons, C. A. Meade; dnners, etc., M. Gorham; dances, etc., G. W. Hayden; student statstcs, C. F. Tllnghast and C. G. Hyde; athletcs, J. Rockwell, Jr., and G. Abbott; class and course photographs, W. G. Houck; lunch room and cage, D. M. Bates, Jr.; C. W. Dckey to help where most needed. The greatest part of ths exhbt must be by photographs. All who have class, course, athletc, fraternty, socety photographs of any perod snce 86o, are requested to communcate wth the Commttee. All must cooperate n ths matter, and perhaps sacrfce a few valued souveners f the best results are to be obtaned. Let us be truly patrotc for once. The portfolo, when returned from the Far, wll be placed n the trophy room or some equally accessble place, there to serve as a permanent record of events that must otherwse soon be forgotten n the everchangng phases of Tech lfe. The portfolo wll serve as a foundaton also for smlar future records. AT the Columba Cycle Club games held n Hartford, March 25, F. W. Lord, '93, won thrd n the rope clmbng, and ths counts a pont toward the cup offered by the Athletc Club to the man who won the greatest number of ponts n games open to the M.. T. A. C. between Aprl, 892 and Aprl, 893. Followng s the score of those who won fve or more ponts durng the year: Lord, ' Heywood, ' Crane, ' Batchelder, ' Hlurd, ' Jones, ' Rockwell, '96... French ' Tantor, ' Dearborn, ' Dorman, ' Andrews, ' Clafln, ' Parkelr, ' Hersey, ' Waterman, ' Harvey, ' Thomas, ' Casey, ' Clapp, ' Bakenhus, ' The ponts made by Classes are as follows: 92, 37; '93, 6; '94, 4; '95, 59, and 96, 42. t should be remembered, however, that '92 and '96 were compettors for the cup for a much shorter tme than the other classes. W. Byrd Page, the. of P. jumper, proposes to try to regan the runnng hgh jumpng record ths season. He says he s stronger than ever, and beleves that he can beat hs own 6 feet 4 nches, and M. T. Sweeney's 6 feet 4-1 nches.

2t6 1*''MR E R F "Who's de freak wd a 4 on hs hat?" We have agan receved sad news. C. E. Rpley, 'go, ded March 5, 893, at hs home n Rutland, Vt. On Thursday, March 30th, we were favored wth a vst from Prof. John Alden, of the Worcester Polytechc nsttute. Professor Hoffman's new furnace n the Mnng Lab. blows up. Mr. D. (between gasps), "What made t do that?" Professor Chandler (durng exam. n materals): "Well, ths examnaton s none of my dong, anyway, so you need not blame me for t." The Advertser some tme ago had a good account of Tech's exhbt for the Far and stated that t s one of whch Boston may well be proud. The Technology quarterly may be obtaned of Mr. Andrews, the lbraran n the readng room. Sngle copes 75 cents, yearly subscrptons $3.oo. A daly paper n ts baseball column prnts an advertsement regardng new '93 bats. Our Senor class, however, can gve them ponts on bats, and batters as well. There are stll a few vacant places n the Technology World's Far Excurson Party. Applcatons should be made at once, for the lst wll be closed early next week. Leutenant Hawthorne wll have the Battalon on the street as soon as t s prudent. t s almost mpossble to understand commands n the large Armory wth ts curved roof. Out of sx assstants n mechancal engneerng, who have ther desks n Room o, Engneerng Buldng, four are understood to be engaged to be marred, or nearly so. All contrbutons to THE TECH of any sort must be wrtten n nk, on but one sde of the paper, and must postvely be sgned wth the wrter's name. No anonymous artcles can be publshed. D. M. Pratt, '93, Course., has just receved a poston wth the Ramapo ron Works. Ths company s a large manufacturer of car wheels, brakes, and other ralroad applances. Overheard n Room 30 engneerng buldng. -Student to Professor: "Wll you come and see my drawng, please?" Prof. H- (absent mndedly, thnkng hmself at home): "Yes, dear." Our muscal organzatons offered to gve the usual beneft concert for our Football Assocaton, but owng to the encouragng fnancal condton of the latter, the ad was as poltely declned as offered. Many astonshng facts are brought out by the thrd year men of Courses. and V. n workng up ther engne tests. The other day two were handed n whch stated that one cylnder developed 840 horse power. The Poltcal Hstory class have come to such a pont that they ever look forward to an apprecatve remark from the nstructor at the begnnng of the hour. At one lecture t was, " Don't be any more foolsh than you can help." What wll t be next? W. B. Douglass, '92, a graduate of Course., wthn a few weeks after graduaton desgned a large roof truss for the new courthouse here n Boston. The company for whom he drew the desgns obtaned the contract n competton wth several much larger establshments. One of the thrd year Archtects s busy reparng hs feelngs just now. He handed n a plan whch he had colored to sut hmself,

THE TECH. The followng, from the Sunday Herald, needs no comment:- The annual reunon of the M.. T. class of '85 was of a somewhat novel descrpton, as t was held last nght, conjontly by 35 members n Young's Hotel, Boston, n close touch and communcaton wth 5 brethren assembled n the Audtorum Hotel, Chcago, chattng, sngng, speechmakng over a long-dstance telephone. Prof. Charles R. Rchards presded n Boston and R. E. Rchardson n Chcago. Speeches were made on "The nsttute Exhbt at Chcago" by Mr. Everett Morss n Boston; "The World's Far, or Why We Get Marred," by Mr. R. H. Perce o Chcago; "Our Palmpset," by Arthur D. Lttle n Boston, and a zther solo n Chcago by R. E. Rchardson. nvestgaton by the nsttute Commttee has shown that our reporters for the Boston papers are not to blame for the poor notes and small space devoted to Technology. They hand n suffcent materal, but the varous edtors n charge of college news appear to take a fendsh delght n curtalng our news. The Comnr 1 40 and was feelng qute proud over hs success, when the Professor dampened hs feelngs by tellng hm that t looked just lke a par of calco pants. We understand that several Course V. men are gong to try for one of those $50 przes whch have been offered for the best desgn for the rearrangement of Copley Square. The desgn s to nclude some monumental feature for the center. Professor Levermore (quotng from a speech of Dsrael's): " 'Mr. Gladstone s a sophstcated rhetorcan, nebrated by the exuberance of hs own verbosty."' X, '96: "6Please repeat." Professor: "Pay strct attenton, and afterward consult a dctonary." Regular exercses n fourth year mechancal engneerng laboratory closed last week. The remanng laboratory work for the Senors wll consst of a ffty-four hour boler test and an engne test to whch Hrn's analyss wll be appled. The boler test wll probably begn Aprl oth, the engne test comng soon after. Professor, durng lecture, makes mstake and s corrected by Co-ed: " make these mstakes purposely at tmes to see f the class s payng attenton, but ths was not made wth that purpose n vew. Merely accdental. Thanks for the suggeston." Perceptble blushes from drecton of Co-ed; bland smles from remander of class. The regular meetng of the Cvl Engneerng Socety was held n Room, Rogers, Thursday evenng, March 30th. F. E. Matthes, '95, read a paper on the "Reclamaton of the Zuyder Zee," whch was receved wth nterest. At the close of the paper Professor Nles made some remarks concernng the physcal features of Holland. The Sophomore course n Englsh, conducted by Mr. Dcknson, s a decded mprovement over that of last year. The Englsh Department have worked hard to accomplsh as much as possble n the tme at ther dsposal, and certanly ther efforts have met wth success. t would be hard to fnd anywhere a course of smrlar nature whch s so nterestng, so general, so nstructve, and wthal, so "compact." Last week Mr. Charles W. Hnnan, '70, now State Gas nspector, delvered two entertanng lectures on llumnatng gas to the Junor chemsts and chemcal engneers. These were supplemented by a vst to the Charlestown Gas Company and then to the Boston Gas Company. The latter's plant was especally nterestng snce the new system for makng the water gas, recently ntroduced here, was thoroughly explaned. The frst "tramp" of the Freshman Battalon from the gymnasum to the armory, the other day, caused consderable exctement among all those on the lne of march. The guns certanly added a great deal to the effect. f suffcent nterest s manfested, there wll undoubtedly be a prze drll at the end of the year. So look out, Freshmen, and do your best n tranng durng the comng weeks, to wn possble honors for your company.

238 mttee would lke to mpress upon these edtors that Technology s vastly more mportant than Boston College and smlar nsttutons, and that t mght be well to cater a lttle more to Technology "trade," and grant us the promnence deserved. The appled mechanc's laboratores opened March 2 9 th. Ths term's work s partcularly nterestng to the students because the 300,000 lb. Emery testng machne, and the 4,000 lb. Mller beam machne, are beng used n laboratory work for the frst tme. Speakng of the Emery machne t may be nterestng to know that the only other machne of ths knd n the country s the one at the Watertown arsenal, although the government wll have a 200,000 lb. machne n ts exhbt at the World's Far. Rehle testng machnes are more common, the one at Cornell beng a notable one. On Sunday, March 26th, a number of students, under the supervson of Professor Mller, made a seres of tests upon one of the 2,000 horse power trple expanson engnes of the West End Ralroad Co. These tests are the thess work of Messrs. Woods and Latham. The man object s to fnd the value and best arrangement of steam jackets. The tests were conducted n much the same manner as are those n the mechancal engneerng laboratores, and from a comparson of the results obtaned upon the two engnes, t s expected that much valuable nformaton wll be ganed. The engne tested has two cranks, the hgh and ntermedate cylnders beng n tandem. The report of the "Technque" Commttee of '95 was fnally consdered on Wednesday last at a meetng of the Sophomore Class. Messrs. Watkns, Wggn, Nay and Tucker were apponted to assst the executve commttee n drectng the electon of an Electoral board of twenty-fve members. Ths electoral board wll meet and elect eght edtors who wll choose ther own edtor n chef. The artstc staff of three members wll be THE TE CH. chosen by merts of compettve work. The report was then adopted and a vote of thanks extended to the commttee for ts labors n that drecton. The nsttute dnner was then brought up; as the hour was closng the subject was dropped, but wll be acted upon at a future meetng. Course V. has always prded tself consderably upon ts array of talent. t boasts of artsts, men who can draw anythng,-even a salary,-of muscans, and of poets. But of late t s begnnng to assume promnence n another feld, athletcs. n the person of Mr. Guy Lowell, the noted Harvard sprnter, t receved a very desrable acquston last fall; and now Mr. H. K. Turner, 95, s to ptch for the B. A. A. Mr. Turner made an envable record as ptcher for the Andover nne, wnnng the Exeter game, and the recognton of hs abltes by such an organzaton as the B. A. A. s a well-merted complment. He wll also ptch for '95, and wll undoubtedly add consderable nterest to the comng Sophomore-Freshman game. Nnety-four held ts second meetng for the purpose of dscussng the nsttute dnner last week Tuesday. A moton was carred to elect two men to serve wth the presdent as a commttee for ths dnner. Messrs. Daves and Blss were thus chosen to act wth Mr Meade. They were empowered to make all arrangements wth the other classes for the management of the affar just as n years past, wth the excepton that a cordal nvtaton should be ssued to '93 to appont a commttee whch should drect the busness matters. The class realzes that ths step mght easly be seen n a false lght. Nnety-four hestated long before gvng up the customary Senor dnner, and only on beng urged by numerous Senors dd they fnally decde to dscontnue ths non-self-supportng custom. t s rather hard to gve no complmentary dnner to the Senors, and stll harder to nvte them to delegate men to drect a general E rn H H F K

THE TECH nsttute dnner. Ths, however, was done wth the best of feelng toward '93, and as an act of courtesy. The slght modfcatons (slght theoretcally, at least) whch transform the usual custom nto an nsttute dnner are beleved to be essental for the contnuance of a pleasant and commendable affar. We prnt below a cuttng, from a Denver paper, on the dnner gven to the Western Assocaton of M.. T. by Presdent Edward W. Rollns. The affar was one of the most successful meetngs held durng the past seven years. nsttute matters were dscussed wth an excellent show of sprt. On Saturday evenng, March 8th, Edward W. Rollns, the presdent of the Western Assocaton of the Massachusetts nsttuton of Technology, gave a dnner to the assocaton at the Metropole hotel. Among those present were the followng: Theodore E. Schwarz, Harry D. Smth, Charres H. Lvngstone, Frederck T. Snyder, Raphael M. Hosea, Frank E. Shepard, Frederck F. Coggn, Jr., Edwn E. Chase, Bradford H. Locke and George B. Lander of Denver; Walter C. Brace of Rco, Charles A. Judkns of Aspen, and Charles W. Goodale of Butte, Montana. Arrangements have been made for rasng a fund to ad n the exhbt to be gven by the nsttute at the World's Far. A letter was receved from the secretary of the Northwestern assocaton, havng ts headquarters at Chcago, statng that quarters had been provded at Chcago for the entertanment of all technologcal men durng the far. The object of ths assocaton s to ad the cause of techncal educaton n ths secton. Between the Mssour rver and San Francsco about 50 graduates of ths nsttuton are now located. The number of students at the nsttute ths year was,300. The growth of the school has been very marked and partcularly snce Presdent WValker was placed at the head of t, and t now ranks frst among the techncal schools of the nted States. THE same old annual round of wre-pullng, contenton, hard feelng, crtcsm, agan confronts us, just as the top and marble seasons lend ther yearly "scraps." Nnety-fve has already passed the verge of that tumblng, fascnatng maelstrom, and s rapdly whrlng about; soon wll the fatal current drag even the cautous marner to hs apparent doom, the vortex s reached, and-thank heavens!-the "Technque" Board s elected. n a sad and magnatve mood the Lounger ponders, thnks of the past,-ts trals, yes, and ts successes, too. The Lounger (but he was not the Lounger then) once "ran" for the "Technque" Board, sprnted, as t were. He won hs heat but faled n the fnals. The surprsng part of t was that many thought he had captured everythng, untl the judges announced that hs frendlest rval broke the tape two nches ahead. Ah! those were sad, exctng tmes for hm; the world had no more charm, van were the honors of lfe; the paths of glory ndeed led to the grave, but they seemed almost too long then. Accordng to the wvse man tme heals all wounds. So t dd n ths case, together wth the summer vacaton. Agan was the earth green as the verdant one once more were honors worth strvng for. The moral, frends, s yet to come. The very next wnter was the Lounger elected to THE TECH Board, and hs enthusasm soon made the mghty Lounger column subservent to hs wll; fame came at hs bddng, and glory enveloped hm. Even the "Technque" edtors felt humble n hs presence. To be sure, dear Sophomores, you cannot all be Loungers, at least, THE Lounger, nether can you all be "Technque" edtors. But ths each one can and ought to do: throw asde all personal, fraternty, and course rvalry, and vote for the men best ftted for the Board; f you coveted a poston and are dsapponted, make the best of t, wn the respect of your companons, and so prepare yourself for future honors. Thus the Lounger counsels wth the wsdom of experence.

240 THE: TECH. M.. T. The tme s comng, when for fame, For mert and for spotless name, Technology shall take her stand As frst and foremost n the land. 'Ts ths her sons have long desred, Whose hearts and brans have been nspred, By years of study 'neath her care, And who wll, one and all declare; 'Ts but the reapng for her own, What she for many years has sown.
