15 ANNUAL REPORT OF THE DRECTOR To the Trustees and Members of the Feld Columban Museum. have the honor to present a report of the operatons of the Museum for the year closng September 30, Much of the work of ths frst full year has necessarly been of a preparatory character and of systematzng the methods for conductng the affars of the nsttuton. Necessarly also from the very nature of the crcumstances under whch the orgnal nstallaton was accomplshed, much re-arrangement and re-adjustment has been carred on n all of the departments. And as to the buldng tself and ts nteror arrangement, consderable reconstructon and re-adaptaton has been demanded to render the buldng more ft for the unexpected uses to whch t s now devoted. Vewng ts present condton, t would seem almost as f nothng had been done. And yet n contemplatng what has been accomplshed from the commencement, the crtcsm of dleness wll certanly not fall upon the executve force. ncome and Mantenance. n accordance wth the nstructons of the Executve Commttee, the Drector prepared n January last a budget of the ncome and cost of mantenance for the actual year of The total estmated ncome for the year was ^70,770. The estmated expense for the year was $104,296. An effort has been made to ncrease the revenue and decrease the expenses, wth the result that by takng the actual fgures for nne months of the year to October, and estmatng very carefully and conservatvely the fgures lkely to be made for the three remanng months, t s found that the ncome for 1895 wll be $74,095, and that the cost of mantenance for 1895 wll be $80,672, a very gratfyng contrast wth the estmate made the frst of the year. These fgures do not nclude specal cash donatons, nor do they nclude specal appropratons for materal and permanent mprovements made by the Executve Commttee. The Membershps. The By-laws publshed elsewhere n ths report explan the dfferent characters of membershps and dsclose the condtons under whch they may be secured. PuBUCAT The frst edton of the Gude to the Museum was prepared durmg the early sprng of 1894, and appeared n tme lor the openng day. June. Owng to the somewhat unsettled stale of the collectons at that tme, there was much dffculty n prep.t'" ' -trate plans, or even descrptons. Ths Gude contaned 84,.^L.md provtled a systematc, although condensed, presentaton of all the materal then n the Museum, ndcatng the locaton by

The numerous changes and arrangement of materal entaled much alteraton of the proof, so that the edton was more expensve than usual. The edton was 3,000. The second edton of the Gude was publshed as soon as the frst was exhausted, and the opportunty was taken advantage of to make the numerous changes requred by re-nstallaton. Ths edton was also of 3,000. A subsequent edton of 3,000 was ssued n March of ths year. whch should be the medum of n October, 1894, a plan was outlned for a seres of scentfc and hstorcal publcatons presentng to the world the results of the research and nvestgaton conducted under the auspces of the Museum. The publcatons are ntended prmarly to convey nformaton upon the collectons and expedtons of the Museum. There s no restrcton, however, as to authorshp or subject, provded the papers come wthn the scope of scentfc or techncal dscusson. Each number as ssued s treated as a separate monograph on the subject, so that the publcaton seres ncludes what n other museums and scentfc nsttutons appear under the ttle of transactons, memors, bulletns or catalogues. n order to provde for volume bndng, a sectonal plan has been adopted, and the followng seres have thus far been establshed: Hstorcal, Geographcal, Botancal, Zoologcal and Anthropologcal. Each seres has ts own volume numbers and consecutve pagnaton. Ths plan has the obvous advantage that the publcatons of each department are kept dstnct, and when bound for lbrary use the numbers are already classfed accordng to subjects. Another great advantage s n enablng the Museum to enlarge ts exchange lst; nstead of sendng an entre set of publcatons n each case, only that seres s sent to an nsttuton or ndvdual that s of especal nterest thereto. The followng publcatons have been ssued: Pub.. Hst. Ser., Vol., No.. An Hstorcal and Descrptve Account of the Feld Columban Museum. Pub. 2. Hst. Ser., Vol.. No. 2. The Authentc Letters of Columbus. A prnted acknowledgment form s sent wth each pubhcaton so that the Museum may be more certan to be apprsed of the recept of the pubhcatons. A request s added n each case that the publcatons of the recpent be sent n exchange. About 100 personal letters have been wrtten requestng that back volumes be sent to complete sets of books, journals, etc., already on the shelves of the Lbrary, or askng to be placed on the permanent malng lst for contemporaneous publcatons. Lbrary The Lbrary w-as organzed n March, At that tme the collectons of books on hand were 1,390 ttles from the Department of Ethnology, and 350 ttles from the Department of Mnes and Mnng of the Exposton. The Kunz collecton of books on Geology, Gems, Metallurgy, etc., and the Baltmore and Oho collecton on Transportaton were added shortly afterward. There were 6,300 ttles and 460 ttles respectvely n these two lbrares. The Cory collecton on Ornthology, consstng of 587 volumes was purchased and added to the Lbrary on October 5, Through the generosty of Belot College the splendd ornthologcal lbrary of Edward E. Ayer has been condtonally presented to the Museum. The total number of books accessoned and nventored to October, 1894, was: Gfts, 2,864; loans, 869, purchases, 3,406. The accessons durng the year October, 1894, to October, 1895, have been: Gfts, 421 bound volumes, and 465 pamphlets; loans, 123 bound volumes and 79 pamphlets; purchases, 1,170 bound volumes, 51 unbound volumes, and 16 pamphlets. All books publshed n foregn countres have been purchased through agents n London, Berln and Lepzg. Most Amercan books have been purchased through Chcago houses. $3, was approprated for the purchase of books for the Lbrary, of whch approxmately $1, was spent for general reference works, sets of scentfc perodcals, etc., and about $ for books n each of the Departments of Anthropology, Botany, Geology, Zoology and ndustral Arts. The whole number of perodcals subscrbed for s 94. A large number of the volumes receved from the Department of Ethnology of the Exposton were unbound, and as a matter of preservaton were sent to the bndery, together wth the accumulatng numbers of current scentfc perodcals and old sets of unbound but valuable publcatons. The total number of volumes bound s 495. The large collecton of pamphlets acqured n the "Kunz Collecton" have been classfed accordng to subjects, and fastened n cheap bndngs, makng them thus avalable for mmedate and constant use. A new system of shelf classfcaton has been prepared on the

Ths s a typewrtten catalogue, and probably fve or sx thousand cards have already been prepared, but a large amount of work s, of course, stll necessary to complete the catalogue. The Lbrary has been qute generally and constantly used by the Curators. The number of books drawn for desk use ly Curators durng the year amounts to some 630 volumes. All perodcals are rescrvetl for the use of Curators for three days,.\ftcr ths tme they arc exposed upon the tables of the readng-room for publc use and reman there untl the recept of new numbers. Correspondence relatng to offers of materal are preserved n the same manner and an alphabetcal card ndex contanng all names that enter nto the correspondence s kept for each set of fles. The catalogue of specmens or "Department nventory" s prepared by the Curators of departments. A set of books has been provded each department and the nventoryng s beng pushed as rapdly as tme and crcumstances permt. The catalogung of specmens s, of course, an mmense undertakng, but the progress thus tar made s satsfactory. n ths drecton the followng has been accomplshed: Department of Anthropology, 15,000 cards; Department of Botany, 9,041 entres; Department of Geology, 8,000 entres, 4,000 cards; Department of Hstory, 1,455 entres; Department of ndustral Arts, 3,261 entres; Dvson of Transportaton 7,251 entres; Department of Zoology, 388 entres; Department of Ornthology, 1,900 entres; Lbrary, 9,551 entres. Accessons. A detaled lst of all of the accessons receved for the Museum, ether from donatons, loans, deposts, for examnaton, Museum expedtons, and purchases, accompanes ths report. As wll be observed, the number of the accessons durng the year has been qute large; statstcs do not sgnfy much where there s such a varaton n the sze and character of the accessons themselves. Your attenton s therefore drected to a few of the larger and more notable acqustons. The materal receved through Museum expedtons, especally that of Mr. Allson V. Armour, referred to elsewhere, has added a large amount of valuable scentfc materal to the collectons of several departments. The donatons and purchases n Egyptan archeology has enabled the Department of Anthropology to devote an entre hall to ther exhbton, and helps to fll the great need of materal llustratng the of the Old World. Frends of the Museum have been archeology lberal n ther donatons to the Department of Botan}', and partcular menton should be made of the generous contrbutons of Mrs. M. S. The Department of Geology, besdes acqurng a large amount of new materal by the recent vst of the Curator to the New England States, has been the recpent of numerous ndvdual specmens and complete sutes of ores and mnerals. An equpment of mcroscopc and scentfc apparatus for cuttng sectons of rock and mneral for mcroscopc examnaton wll enable the Curator to carry qjx lnes of nvestgaton that would otherwse have been mpossble. n the Department of Hstory the parts of the group of the Columbus Quadrga were assembled n the Museum model room and

Prof. Holmes ftted out for surveys and observatons n Archeology. He secured at.all ponts a large amount of valuable nformaton that he s now embodyng n a contrbuton to the Museum publcatons, llustratng hs work from the wealth of sketches obtaned by hm on the trp. He secured altogether about one thousand specmens n Archeology from He Yucatan, Chapas, Oaxaca, Vera Cruz and the valley of Mexco. also establshed desrable scentfc connectons and correspondents n all parts of the country vsted, and, as wth Dr. Mllspaugh, secured a knowledge of the countres and the peoples vsted that wll be of great value n future work. The expedton as a whole was out for three months, and durng that tme covered a great deal of very nterestng terrtory, much of t theretofore unvsted by scentsts. Four lectures n the Museum course have resulted from the trp, two delvered by Dr. Mllspaugh n the Sprng seres, and two by Prof. Holmes scheduled n the present course. All of the expenses of the expedton were borne by Mr. Armour, and to hm the nsttuton and the Curators who accompaned hm are ndebted for the prceless results obtaned. The expedton to San Domngo was conducted by Mr. Geo. K. Cherre, Assstant Curator n the Department of Ornthology. He departed n November, 1894, and returned n the latter part of May, Hs work was very thorough, very laborous, at tmes qute dangerous, and exceedngly successful. Most of hs work was done n the nteror and on the Carbbean slope and along the Ngua rver, and the clmatc danger to whch the Curator was subjected s apparent from the fact that four of hs gudes were strcken wth fever durng hs stay upon the sland. Mr. Cherre obtaned one thousand nne hundred and ffty-eght brd skns, sxteen mammals, eghty reptles, and a number of specmens of fsh and Crustacea. Among the brds, two speces proved neav to scence and a number of others are very nterestng as representng rare and lttle known forms. Capt. Mner W. Bruce, unattached, but a student n Ethnology and an explorer n the Northwest, of repute, was outftted by the Museum for an expedton to Alaska and Sbera n June, Capt. Bruce faled to reach the pont of hs destnaton last season on account of an accdent to the machnery of the vessel n whch he saled, but he wll mdertake the work agan ths season, usng the materal he had purchased for exchanges last year. The work n Massachusetts and Connectcut was carred on n company wth sev-. r.!..fh«r geologsts under the gudance of Prof. Kmerson, of.\mherst t. ', and Prof. Hobbs, of the Unversty of Wsconsn. A complete seres of specmens llustratng the dfferent formatons of the <freen Mountans and the rocks of the Connectcut Valley was obtaned, and several specmens llustratng structural features. 27 Oct Annual Report of the Drector. g has rendered valuable assstance. About sxty large photographs have been obtaned and a number of fossls and specmens llustratng glacal and other phenomena. South Park Commssoners The appropraton by the Board of South Park Commssoners of $15,000 per annum, to be appled to the mantenance of the Museum has been one of the gratfyng and encouragng ncdents of the year. t s a substantal evdence of the co-operatve and helpful atttude of the Commssoners. The Drector begs to acknowledge the very frendly and cordal atttude mantaned at all tmes, and often under very tryng crcumstances, by the Superntendent of the South Park system, and hs subordnates. They have aded the Museum effectvely whenever the opportunty presented tself. Photography. The necessty arsng for photographc work of a nature that the general photographer could not execute, such for example as llustratng publcatons and lectures, as well as preservng numerous condtons and objects that could n no other way be llustrated n the collectons of the Museum, t was detertnned, n October, to establsh a photographc secton for work for all the departments of the nsttuton. The Curator of the Depart ment of Botany, who s sklled n the requred processes, consented to take charge of the work. One of the rooms n the North Balcony makes an excellent dark chamber, and three cameras wth the necessary lenses, one mcro-camera and mcroscope, and the materals and chemcals needed were procured. The work soon became of greater volume than could be performed wthout assstance n the detal and routne, and an assstant was gven Dr. Mllspaugh from the staff of the Lbraran. The results of the photographc work are as follows: Negatves made, 310; photo-prnts, 115; lantern sldes for lectures, 119; prnts to llustrate publcatons^ 42; photographs taken on expedtons, 131. Fully as much work as was performed n the last year s already on hand for mmedate attenton. Prntng. A prntng offce was establshed n the latter part of March to execute the large amount of labels and general prntng that s so necessary n the Museum. The ntenton s to replace all of the hand-wrtten, and n many cases, llegble labels, wth prnted ones, and each department of the Museum has commenced upon ths process of substtuton. The amount of labor nvolved n such an undertakng s, of course, very large, and the establshment of an offce was, therefore, not only a necessary but an

Warehouse and Workshop. The purchase of a warehouse and workshop, by order of the Cxecutve Commttee, whch buldng s locatc<l on the corner of Ffty sxth Street and Jefferson Avenue, has provded the nsttuton wth ample room for storage purposes and wth rooms for carpentry, modelng and plaster work, and for taxderny. three knds of labor whch could not be permtted wthn the Museum buldng as at present arranged. The small rooms, n what may be termed, the second galleres of the Courts, whch t was thought mght be utlzed for these purposes, have by force of crcumstances been pre-empted by the Curators of Botany, Zoology and Ornthology for laboratores, by the posonng and dsnfectng laborator^. by the guards and by the departments of prntng and photography. These twelve rooms are already nadepate for the purposes to whch they arc devote*!, and more room for workn:: s alreadv one of the great needs of the Museum. L<-M NM' Hkv -The most mportant permanent mprovements durng the past year have l»een the constructon of steam heatng and electrc lght plants, whch systems are nstalled n a new boler house at the west of the buldng, and have gven the greatest satsfacton n operaton. The steam plant has three 100 H. P. bolers. 12,000 feet of steam ppe an<l 70 radators. The electrc lght plant has a capacty of forty.2«h)-candle power arc lamps. The problem of heatng the mmense area wthn the Museum walls was r» f.f r<!ur»l the most serous consrlrraton. t was fourd

29 Oct Annual Report of the Drector. 21 mpossble to heat the four great courts wth ther heght of seventy-eght feet, and t was an almost hopeless undertakng to warm the eght}- spacous doorless halls. But the necessty for t compelled a means. The entrances to the halls leadng from the courts and leadng n and out of the long and narrow annex passages were ftted wth large movable parttons fllng the entre space, n whch doors were constructed. By ths means all the exhbton halls were enclosed, and beng provded n each case wth ample steam radaton, a mnmum temperature of about 55 degrees was ordnarly mantaned throughout the buldng. The boler plant beng located at the West Annex, t was feared that steam n suffcent quantty could not reach the East Annex. But the constructon was so excellent and the return system so" capable that all of the halls mantaned about the sama temperature except on very cold days. The courts are treated as streets, and vstors seem to readl}^ adapt themselves to ths condton of affars. Ths arrangement practcally closes the Department of Botany durng the colder months, for, except on the few warm days of the wnter season, t s mpossble to vew the collectons there wth any satsfacton. Coverng the grlle work around the sky-lghts of the halls wth asbestos, of whch 15,000 square feet was used, aded very much n creatng an agreeable temperature throughout the buldng. The only occason for lghtng the buldng s for patrol purposes, as the Museum s never open to the publc after dark. A judcous dsposton oj the forty arc lamps has amply llumnated the nteror of the buldng and gven sx lamps for the patrol of the outsde of the structure. The queston of lght and heat naturally assumes an entrely dfferent phase durng the hot months, when the sun drvng down upon the sky-lghts creates an ntensty of heat and a glare of lght that at tmes become unbearable. To obvate ths, sun curtans of unbleached musln were hung under all of the celng lghts throughout the buldng and under the great sky-lghts n the man roof. Ths lessened the heat rays very notceably, and softened the theretofore blndng sunlght. nstallaton, Re-arrangement and Permanent mprovements. The largest amount of work under ths head has been performed upon the roof. The eght gables on the East and West Annexes, have been covered wth tn. Two domes, have been covered wth tn; 3,000 square feet of corrugated ron have been put on the roof, whle aprons to keep out the snow, and sx new fre-proof scuttles have been constructed and covered. Wall strps, gutters, rdge strp*s and star domes have been repared and constructed to the extent of about 5,000
