LH E acton of the Faculty n grantng the petton for an ;j 1l: extended recess at Chrstmas may ndcate more than appears at frst thought. We have always held that our professors are alve to the wants and welfare of the students; yet we beleve that the majorty of them have lttle realzed the tremendous ncrease here of late years n college sprt, or the growth of local nterests and of ndvdual apprecaton of the opportuntes afforded by Technology n drectons other than purely scentfc. Ths change, whch has been frequently notced and commended by many of our older students, detracts n no wvay from thle g(ood or efflcency of the scentfc departments ; but, on the other hand, t tends rather to ncrease the value of ther tranng by embellshng t. The Faculty are begnnng to apprecate ths centralzng student sentment whch has, n a dfferent development, become a rulng power. The same deas have been manfested n varous phases at other colleges,- everywhere the tendency beng to replace arbtrary faculty government n all cases possble by a rulng board, upon whch are represented both professor and student. Ths has not yet been accomplshed n realty at Technology, stll the ever ncreasng attenton whch the Faculty pay to student desres confrms us n the opnon that Tech s nfluenced to no small extent by the general evoluton of college governments. t s evdent to those of us who have been here longest, that nearly all the professors look now wth more favor upon the varous socetes whch have flourshed so marvelously her'e, that they also encourage our efforts to unte the students, to ntroduce socal customs, and, n short, to make Tech lfe more lke tle recognzed college exstence. Ths may nclne toward a slght reducton of the amount of actual "grndng" here, but n return t offelrs opportunty to make our knowledge more useful to our fellow-men by the greater faclty n presentng t, and more acceptable by the ncreased ease n mpartng t, whch the more frequent ntercourse wth others under all condtons must occason. Further, snce our courses are desgned prmarly to teach us where to look for facts, and to teach us lowv to study, the commttng to memory of a few formula s of less mportance than the learnng where to get nformaton needed, and the ablty to use to the greatest advantage the knowledge ganed. Let us, therefore, welcome every broadenng of our general opportuntes whch does not cause a serous loss of effcency n the scentfc nstructon of whch Technology s so justly proud.

134 14THE TEOCH. HAT the Sophomore class should show ts apprecaton of the dstngushed gentleman who s gvng lectures on Amercan hstory, by applause on 'hs entrance to the stage, s rght and proper. That ths applause, however, should degenerate nto whstlng and cat-callng, such as marked last Frday's lecture, s dsgraceful. The class must know that t s no complment to Professor Fske to greet hm n ths manner, and should take heed lest such hoodlum dongs become to be assocated wth ts name. ONLY a few years ago the Walker Buldng was known by the deceptve name of New Buldng. At the nstance of THE TECH, the Corporaton bestowed the present name upon t, to the gratfcaton of all our students. To-day the Engneerng and Archtectural Buldngs mght well be otherwse desgnated. Among our many respected professors s one pecularly dear to all who come n contact wth hm. He has been connected wth Technology through all ts struggles, and, as Presdent and professor, he has done much to place the nsttute where t now s. THE TECH desres to see n the near future one of the prncpal buldngs bear the name of ths revered man, that the names of the three ndvduals whose personaltes have entered nto our whole atmosphere, may be daly upon the lps of our students for years to come. The Edtors do not hold themselves reslonsble for opn#- ons exlressed by corresfondenls. 2 To THE EDTORS OF THE TECH:- As a Senor who, for nearly four years, has taken a general nterest n all the dfferent organzatons at Technology, should lke to answer a letter whch appeared n the last TECH. The Athletc Club has long been regarded as one of our worthest and most necessary organzatons, and ths vew would be undenably proved were t to cease to exst even temporarly. That t has helped along other organzatons s undoubtedly true, and ts sprt s to be commended. But why, pray, f the Club flourshed for sxteen years and had money to gve away, why, ask, can t not support tself now, when athletcs are attractng far more general attenton than 3t.,

kfe TECHE. 185 formerly, both at Technology and elsewhere, and where, moreover, we have twelve hundred students to draw on nstead of the seven or eght hundred of a few years ago? The answer s almost self-evdent. Notces of class and other meetngs are posted so that one cannot help seeng them even f he doesn't want to. But where, for nstance, were the notces of the recent class champonshp meetng? Many students, even those especally nterested n athletcs, were known to be unaware that the meetng was to occur upon December 9 th, snce the fact had been publshed only n THE TrEcH a week before, and everybody knows what a student's memory for dates s. n ths case, then, the Club lost much money through ts own oversght. Ths department of advertsng and boomng, whch s necessary n every college, s most defcent here when t s most needed. There s no dearth of nterest among the students, but n ths matter as n all others, the students must be constantly and emphatcally told of events, for, unfortunately, they wll not look thngs up for themselves. So much for that. But then the Club goes to the Glee Club, and n a very gentlemanly way asks for a beneft concert, and ths, should judge from opnons dropped, would have been gladly granted durng the wnter. Not satsfed wth ths, an offcer of the Athletc Club calmly suggests that the Glee Club would do well to gve up a Western tour, and "mantan the good old custom of the prosperous helpng out the needy," snce the trp can do Tech no good, and mght do harm. As several of my frends are members of the Glee Club, know that t takes fully as much tme and trouble for rehearsals, etc., as an athlete takes for tranng. And to what end would the athletes use ths expendture of tme by the Glee Club? To payng off a debt ncurred, partally, at least, through the neglgence of the athletes themselves. Ths appears to me unjust n the extreme. At other colleges the muscal clubs enjoy a tour, and dvde handsome profts as well. f our Clubs want to go on a trp, as ther mert and perseverance ths year certanly enttles them to do, they wll certanly not dsgrace the nsttute ; on the contrary they would be a valuable advertsement, even n the West, where Tech s well known. f they make ths trp, and then have any money n the treasury, t would be most generous for them to help the Athletc Club, whch sorely needs assstance, however ts debt may have been ncurred. SENrOR. To THE EDTORS OF THE TECH:- The concert of the Glee and Banjo Clubs n Huntngton Hall, on Wednesday, was a very credtable one; the Banjo Club n partcular seem to have mproved snce last year. But now, on the eve of ther Western trp, t may be well to offer a few suggestons wth respect to ther general appearance and conduct upon the stage, whch s hardly up to the standard set by other colleges. As frst mpressons go a great way, t would be much better for the men to come upon the stage n a more regular manner, not stragglng on as by chance, makng a very cheap appearance. 'rhen, after havng come upon the stage, t s essental. that the groupng should be more symmetrcal. n ths way the shorter men need not be hdden by the taller ones from the audence. The taller men are usually placed n the center, and the shorter ones at ether end, but always presentng some generally symmetrcal arrangement, each man havng hs hands clasped behnd hs back. After the encore of a pece whch has caused laughter n the house, t would certanly show better stage tranng on the part of the Clubs f ther smles were to be ether concealed or left n the ante room before returnng to the stage. More new peces, fewer solos, and less laggng, would gve the entertanment more of a college ar. These suggestons apply partcularly to the Glee Club, but both wll do well to heed thenm, as they wll add greatly to the good mpresson whch the Clubs wll be expected to make on ther trp. W R. S. V. The Md-year Concert. THE frst home concert of the Glee and Banjo Clubs was gven n Huntngton Hall, Wednesday evenng, the 20oth. Specal efforts were put forth by the management to make the event both a socal and a fnancal success; and takng nto consderaton the nearness of Yuletde and the exstng fnancal depresson, the success attaned was most gratfyng. Eght o'clock found the hall comfortably flled, and a moment or two later the Glee Club fled through the lttle stage door, and gave "Schneder's Band" wth consderable sprt, and responded to a hearty encore. The

136 audence, n whch there were many pretty pars ocf "'laughng eyes," was a very apprecatve one, and every number on the programme was encored, and some twce. Ths certanly speaks well for the work of the clubs. The "Onella Polka," wrtten especally for the Banjo Club by Mr. Lansng, was well gven, and repeated later n the programme upon request. Mr. Barker, '96, n hs tenor solo, Mr. Bates, '94, wth hs rousng " Tubal Can," and Mr. Emerson, '96, n hs pano performance, all dd themselves credt. The Glee Club's "Old Woman" was ther best song, unless ther approprate encore to ths, "There Was a Young Woman," took the palm. The latter was wrtten especally for the club by Mr. Osgood, and t was sung by them for the frst tme n publc. The Glee Club showed a marked mprovement over ther Museum performance, and sng much better than dd last year's club. Lttle crtcsm was offered on ther work, but on the contrary t was pronounced unusually pleasng. A well-known muscal crtc, the edtor of a leadng muscal gazette, who was n the audence, sad that the Banjo Club was the fnest amateur club he had ever heard. "Those Locks of Mne." Those locks 've watched from week to week, Descendng soft upon my cheek; And had made a solemn vow Ther partng never to allow, Though some mght class me as a "freak." love them, you can scarce know how, So lght they toss upon my brow; But now fear the barbers seek Those locks of mne. fnd me n a cushoned char, Perched wth my feet hgh up n ar; And as my locklets fall apart, A pan s sent deep to my heart, So hard t s for me to spare Those locks of mne. The canes wll probably be on hand n the very near future. The mentons for the monthly problem of the Junor archtects have been awarded as follows: Frst menton, Brge; second mentons, Shurrocks, Ames, Low, Gurd, Badgley, and Bourne. Mr. Horace B. 11 T'HE TECH M. Paul Bourget, a notable French novelst now vstng the educatonal nsttutons of ths country, attended one of our French classes last Thursday, and seemed greatly pleased wth the work of the students. A queston lately arose among members of the Cvl Engneerng Socety as to the advsablty of payng ts lecturers. At present the queston s undecded, and wll probably reman so untl a more actve nterest s shown. The Senor nomnatng commttee held a meetng on Frday. Mr. C. A. Meade was elected charman, and Mr. A. B. Tenny was chosen secretary. The next meetng wll be held Saturday, at P. M., n THE TECH offce. The rumors that the new German club was organzed for the express purpose of meetng at the Old Elm and mprovng the fluency of the members' German by means of copous draughts of "mported," appears at present to be unfounded. Resolutons have fnally bec sent to the Northwestern Alumn from the class of '96. They would have been sent about a month ago, but the resolutons offered at that meetng were not accepted, as the class felt that ther apprecaton should be more powerfully expressed. Among the valuable works n the cvl engneerng lbrary, s a copy of " Febman's Topographcal Atlas" n the orgnal edton, whch has now become exceedngly rare, so that the department s doubly fortunate n securng t. The volume has lately been shown and partally descrbed to the Sophomore cvls. The Executve Commttee of the Sophomore class has decded to open competton among the '96 students for the desgn on the classdnner menus. The commttee reserves full rght to accept any desgn. A smple desgn that s easly reduced, s desred. The competton closes Thursday, February st, wth C. E. Trout, secretary of the class of '96. The archtects were refused tckets to the Lowell course of lectures on the ground that they had enough to do wthout attendng outsde lectures. Through the nstrumentalty of the head of the department, however, they fnally succeeded n obtanng tckets. t s understood that the refusal to send tckets to the students of the nsttute s a precauton taken by the Faculty to prevent the students beng overworked. Dr. Drown spoke to the Freshmen last Thursday wth regard to the choce of courses, recommendng chemcal engneerng to those of them who purpose gong nto some manufacturng busness upon graduaton, as ths course treats of both chemstry and mechancs. He also stated that the demand for chemsts n prevous years has been three tmes as large as the number of graduates whch the nsttute has turned out. The Eng-neernlo _Vezvs Publshng Company offers the followng przes for the best graduatng theses presented by students graduatng n 894 from any engneerng course of any college n the Unted States or Canada: frst prze, $7;5; second prze, $5o0 ; thrd prze, $25. A specal $oo prze s offered for a post graduate thess. The condtons mnay be learned by referrng to the general bulletn board. Technology men would do well to keep ths n mnd. The Cercle Francas met for the last tme ths term n Room 23, Walker Buldng, Wednesday, December 20th. The secretary read the mnutes of the precedng meetng, after whch several members gave very laughable stores. Professor Van Daell amused those present wth one of hs personal experences, whch he called ",La Dcrznere False." Desgns for the programme of the play were submtted, after whch the meetng adjourned.

188 T88HE At a meetng of the class of '96, held Dec. 20, 893, the followng resolutons were unanmously adopted:- n consderaton of the courtesy and hosptalty shown by the Northwestern Alumn Assocaton to the undergraduates of the Massachusetts nsttute of Technology durng the past summner, and n recognton of ther untrng efforts to make the vst of all Technology men n Chcago a pleasant one, we, the members of the Class of Nnety-Sx, Massachusetts nsttute of Technology, do hereby extend our hearty thanks and expressons of grattude to the aforesad Alumn. Furtherlnore, we desre that a copy of these :resolutons be forwarded to the Northwestern Alumnn Assocaton, and also be publshed n T-HE TECH. For Class of Nnety-Sx, W. AMES, JR. E. A. BALDWN. T. T. Freehand drawng has become such a bore to the Sophomore archtects that for a number of weeks past t has been almost an mpossblty to fnd a quorum at the classes toward the close of the hour, the average attendance beng somethng over one half the class. To assure a larger attendance, Mr. Adams has devsed a scheme whereby unexcused absence s made mpossble. The roll s not only called at the commencement of each hour, but attendance s also taken fve mnutes before the close of the two-hour perod. To avod any mstake or msrepresentaton, the last roll s taken by nspectng the students ndvdually. Ths method has proven a great success, as s shown by the attendance. THE TECH, lke many of the athletes, has msunderstood nstructor Boos and hs dea. Hs desre s to secure the best good of all at the Gym, as events have proved. The offcers of the Athletc Club called upon nstructor Boos on behalf of the students, and came to an amcable understandng. Mr. Boos, t seems, wshes to do everythng n hs power for the beneft of the students, and heartly wshes to co operate wvth them n pe-tect harmony. He welcomes all to the gymnasum, where they wll be gven ndvdual nstructon f necessary. The rules, he wshes to state, regardng tme of exercsng, have been sus- TECH. pended, and henceforth the gymnasum may be consdered a place of freedom and recreaton. The "Deutscher Veren" met last Thursday n Room, Rogers, wth a very good attendance. After a few prelmnary motons, the electon of offcers for the rest of the school year took place. The results were as follows: Presdent, F. E. Matthes, '95; Vce Presdent, E. A. Baldwn, '96; Secretary, H. S. Baldwn, '96; Treasurer, M. E. Perce, '96. The members of the executve commttee, besde four above named, are R. B. Prce, '94; G. -H. Matthes, '95, and G. C. Hall, '96. The programme commttee s made up of V. A. Mayer, '94; G. Swope, '95: R. Bakenhus, '96; E. G. Porteur, '97, and Mss Wood for the young lades. Mr. Hall read a selecton from Mark Twan bearng on the study of German. The Technzology,tal?-1cr'ly receved last week s one especally nterestng. t contans two artcles of general nterest to Tech men. One, by Professor Porter, on the 1 Hydraulc Laboratory of the nsttute," s very comprehensve, and s well llustrated wth four photographc cuts and a ground plan of the laboratory. The second artcle s by Presdent Walker, on "College Athletcs," n whch he most heartly ndorses gymnastcs and the mlder forms of athletcs n educatonal nsttutons of all sorts; but he does not commend athletcs, except n moderate forms, n a techncal school. The artcle s made up from Presdent Walker's address last June before the Alpha Chapter of Ph Beta Kappa at Cambrdge. All those nterested n the subject would certanly proft by readng ths artcle n the Oqarlcr/l. Charles Doyle Smth, a member of Course., '96, whose (leathl was mentoned n the last Tech, lalssedl away amd parcularly sad crcumnstances. Hs father s an unsuccessful nventor, and hs mother an nvald; and so, n hs brave, unselfsh heart Charles assumed,

! the duty of guardan over hs younger brothers, who wth the scanty funds earned by sellng papers rented a few 'attc rooms. From early mornng untl late at nght Charles worked hard to keep the wolf from the door; and as a knd frend pad only hs tuton, he starved hmself-lvng on bread and water-n order to pay the eght dollars necessary for text-books ths year. Although daly falng, he struggled bravely on, untl from sheer exhauston he fnally gave up. There was no money n the house to buy food, and so, sufferng alone and uncared for, he ded of dabetes, too late for medcal assstance. The famly s now beng cared for by promnent Brooklne people, who would have been only too glad to releve the brave lad of hs burden had they known of t n tme. R. M. Thompson has been elected captan of the Dartmouth football team for next year. Columba College has leased the old Manhattan Athletc Club gymnasum. Over 250 tckets for the Sprngfeld game were sold to Smth College students. The banjo club of the Unversty of Chcago numbers ffty members. The Harvard Glee Club wll travel over,9oo mles on ther Chrstmas trp ths year. Tufts enjoys the dstncton of havng two glee clubs, one male and the other female. There s a movement on foot to establsh a magazne to be publshed by the Junor class n the Yale Sheffeld Scentfc School to represent the nterests of that department. re)g)sh: 139 OH13 Two prvate cars of the Delaware & Maryland R. R. have been loaned to the Prnceton Glee and Banjo clubs for ther Chrstmas trp. E. S. Morrson and H. E. Abbott, of Dartmouth, have been awarded the przes offered by the Enlgzneer/ng- Ne.ws for the best graduatng thess by the students of any engneerng or techncal school n the Unted States. A sut for $o,ooo damages has been fled aganst sx Amherst Sophomores by Photographer Kufeld, because hs employee who had charge of the Freshman class pctures was deprved of them by force by the Sophomores. Harvard Annex wll hereafter be knotwn as Radclffe College, and the graduates wtll receve the degree of A. B. nstead of a mere certfcate of graduaton, as heretofore. The change n the offcal name s due to the fact that Anne Radclffe, an Englsh woman of the 7th century, wnas thle frst Ywoman to make a bequest to Harvard. What Chrstmas Means. T'he poet slngs of Chrstmas, And all the joy t brngs; Of wnter's pearly whteness, Of harps wth golden strngs; Of warmth from glowng Yule log, Of gfts from loved ones dear; And tells us of the freedom Brought wth the wvanng year. The student reads, and mlurmtutrs, "How beautful t seems!" But asks hmself the queston, s ths what Chrstmas means?" Of " Dutch" some ffteen pages, Of " Math." a lttle more; Whle books not yet completed Are heaped upon the floor. The " Semes " just before hm Smle grmnly at hs fate; And bd hm to be joyfll Before t s too late. Th/ree days to be so joyful, Two weeks effects to heal; These are the joys and pleasures The weary students feel. E. S. M., '96.

140 TH-3 E1 TE-CH. The wrestlng bouts should be partcularly nterestng, as Hayden, '94, the mddle-weght champon of Colorado, J. W. Thomas, '95, W. B. Taylor, '95, G. Clapp, '95, and Wallace, '97, have agreed to enter. The annual cross-country run of M.. T. A. C., took place Thursday afternoon at 3.45 o'clock. Three Sophomores and three '95 men of the eght entres, competed. Poor tme vwas expected, but notwthstandng the cold weather, two fnshed wthn record tme. Stou-ghton, of Yale, led the feld to the turn, wth Johnston and Clapp close behnd. On the run home Clapp passed Stoughton, and Taylor shook off Johnson, who stuck to hm untl hs strength gave out. Ths gave to the Junors a walkover, wth the Sophomores a sure second. Clapp, who has always been looked upon as a speedy dstance runner, surprsed hs frends by outrunnng the Yale champon. Clapp's tme was 29 mnutes 52 seconds. The men fnshed n the followng order: G. Clapp, '95, frst; B. Stoughton, '95, second; W. B. Taylor, '95, thrd; R. johnston, '96, fourth; R. Norrs, '96, ffth ; W. P. Anderson, Jr., '96, sxth. The standng of the classes for tle sold slver class champonshp cup to date, s as follows : Class of '94 " ' '96. " '97 Ponts S One Tech record was broken, and one establlshed at the B. A. A. gamnes Decemn1ber 2st. B3urnett, '96, whose jump of o feet 7,- nches at the class games was not allocwed, 38 3 cleared o feet -' nches n the standng broad jump, whch s two nches better than the prevous record, and Boeseke, '95, placed the hgh-water mark n the standng three jumps at 31 feet 2 nches. Technology made an unusually strong showng, whch shows that the Track Athletc Team was organzed for a purpose. n the standng three jumps, Boeseke ( foot 6 nches) won frst, Lord (3 feet), second, and Kubl ( foot 6 nches), a Harvard man, got thrd, the dstances, ncludng handcaps, beng 32 feet 8 nches, 32 feet 7'3 nches, and 32 feet 2 nches, respectvely. Glman and Burnett, both scratch men, also competed. The track athletc captan has apponted E. A. Boeseke, '95, R. H. Farquhar, '95, L. Burnett, '96, H. S. Glman, '96, and J. A. Rockwell, Jr., '96, to the 'varsty team for ther good performances at the recent games. There are now sxteen members on the team. The przes for the class champonshp games wll be made n about two weeks. As a rule, a postponed meetng s a falure; but the cross-country run to Cooldge's Corner and return proved very successful. A large crowd wtnessed the fnsh. At a meetng of the Athletc Club executve commttee t was voted not to allow the records made at the ndoor games, as they were not n accordance wth the A. A. U. rules. A. sparrng and wrestlng meetng, open to members of the Athletc Club only, wll be held n the gymnasum, Saturday evenng, February 3d. There wll be four classes n sparrng, two n wrestlng, and one n fencng. Przes wll be awlarded to frst and second, and ponts xvll count toward the class and ndclvdual chamtonshp cups. The 1-Tarvardl Cyclng Assocaton s very desrous to hold a seres of races wth Technology next sprng. The races should be very close and exctng, as the rders from both colleges are record-breakers. 15 141 TJE "rbcl THE TECH. Lounger antcpates addtonal charms of musc and grl, and perchance, a bonus for the Athletes. n the meantme wll the Lounger keep the dlatory Freshman awake to the attractons of concerts n general, and trusts that the manager of the same wll not forget the exstence of several edtors on the staff of a certan worthy journal. THE Lounger s happy n the pleasng realzaton of a Glee and Banjo Club concert well delvered. t was a pleasure to enjoy the sweet warblngs and lusty plunk plunks n our hstorc Huntngton Hall, wth none of the dstractng sde lghts operated by flghty chorus madens n the wngs. He rejoces that Mr. Sheppard s now manager of these healthy organzatons, and he feels n happer harmony wth the mellow voces and nstruments of our cheerful frends. The old hall presented a mrthful appearance that evenng despte the solemn workers up among the frescoes and the ghastly coverngs of whte behnd the bare platform. The grls were there, and merry ones, too. Grls whose nnocent questonngs make them so nterestng; grls who farly bubble over wth the charm of grlshness; grls whose very jollty the Lounger always enves for he never succeeds n capturng t,-all these were there and lent ther brghtness to the anmated scene. The programme, says the poet, was "rch, rare, and racy," and besdes that, ncluded many unexpected charms. The Lounger was especally nterested n the small boy of the occason, who dd hs duty so manfully. He regrets that the zther player dd not apprecate these servces, and dd not consent to st wth hs back to the audence. The stool act, too, was a very pretty one, although the Lounger regretted the non-appearance of an antcpated stump-stoolspeech. The Lounger spent consderalble tme watchng the clawv hammers fly through the ar, and wvas glad to see so many carefully landed. He wvoulcl complement the leader on hs graceful curves and stately appearance, and s sure he may be comforted wth the assurance that hs duty xvas conscentously preformed. Several tmes the Lounger was moved to get the bases out of the hole on darng sldes, but stll he took much general comfort n the occason. Bravely then may the warblers and the plunkers go forth to do and dare, and to carry the proud name of Technology, el cetera, e/ce/era. When they return the l Revenge s sweet. Thus solloquzed the Lounger a short tme snce. The scene was n a down-town electrc wheren the Lounger was comfortably seated. There entered an old acquantance wth two buxom damsels, whose admraton was evdently greatly coveted. The madens were soon seated, and the strcken youth eagerly followed ther every sylable as he hung frst on one strap and then on another. He dd not degn to recognze the Lounger, who sat n mute expectaton of at least a nod from hs old-tme frend. The Lounger was not there when the dear grls were at hand; and deeply chagrned he sank deeper and deeper nto hs great coat tll only hs sad eyes gazed sorrowfully over the coat collar at the merry scene across the way. But the Lounger had hs revenge. Just when the old acquantance was completely carred away wth ther sparklng eyes, and was followng every charmng word that fell from those ruby lps, there entered the car a portly old gentleman n furs, wxvho laborously made hs wvay forward. Wthout once wthdrawng hs gaze from the attractve faces before hm, the Lounger's accluantance nonchalantly pressed a shnng half dollar nto the palm of the portly old gentleman n furs. A curt "No thank you " awakened the enraptured youth to the embarassment of the occason. Amd the confused apologes of hs old frend and the amusement of the fellowpassengers, the Lounger left the car and solloquzed the solloquy that begns ths truthful narraton. dyl. Her head -was not far fom hs shoulder,- She couldl hear hs breath come and go,- And hs voce, thotugh tender, grew bolder As hle whspered these words soft and lowv. Now \-what w\1as he sayng, -wondelr, And where was ths tend'rest of scenes? Just at the lunch-room counter. As he asked for a plate of beans. E. A. B.. '96.
