ExSecretof State John W. Fos ter s n the cty agan after hs bref trp to Hawa, whther he went to se cure a concesson from that Govern ment for a cable from Honolulu to Japan and Australa as a part of the concesson whch the Hawaan Gov emnent had already gven Colonel Spaldng. Mr. Foster found the Ha.. nnvt.nmlnt annaa r.. Sran an further concessons west untl the Congress of the Unted States had decded what acton t would take wth respect to the cable from San Francsco to Honolulu. f Congress votes a subsdy for ths latter cable then Hawa wll grant the concesson for an extenson to Asa and Australa. f, on the other hand, the Unted States does not subsdze the San Francsco and Honolulu cable, the Hawaan Government prefers to be n a pos ton to entertan propostons from other governments whch desre to connect the slands wth Japan and the south. General Foster reports a strong sen tment among the Amercans and some of the Brtsh and German resdents n Hawa n favor of annexaton. The Brtsh and German planters, as a rule. oppose the proposton, prncpally be cause annexaton would abolsh the contract labor system now n vogue n the slands. Under exstng arrange ments the Japanese laborers n the slands, to the number of twenty thousand or thereabout, are all under long tme contracts, whch make mem prac tcally the subects of the planters, by whom they are employed. The Amercan planters, who also use the con tract system, do not. as a rule, beleve that t s good for the country, and ther argument s that what s bad for Hawa must be n the end bad for themselves. They are wllng, there fore, to relnqush what temporary be neft they may get from the system for the ultmate srood whch they beleve wll necessarly follow. General Foster beleves that the Unted States should take some de fnte acton speedly wth reference to Hawa. t s not reht. he says, to leave them n ther present uncertan poston. We ought ether to annex them, he thnks, or announce to the world that we have no further concern n ther affars. f ths be done, t wll leave them free to make other arrange ments whch would doubtless result n the mantenance of a stable form of snr :s now exsts. The ernment would be suffcent to nsure a permanence of these condtons, and the slands mght be admtted on any terms satsfactory to ths Government, provded they were such as to throw ts protecton around them. The present, sad General Foster, s landgrabbn g, an era of and the de taled n ths connecton the extent to whch some of the great European Powers have already gone n ths d recton. n hs opnon, f the Unted States does not gve ts support to the present Hawaan Government and the latter should become too weak to mantan tself n the face of ts pres ent dffcultes, t s not unlkely that some of the great martme Powers may seze the slands n pursuance of ther colonal plan of conquest. t s the Amercan element whch largely domnates the trade of the country, and t has been Amercans for more than sxty years who have left ther mpress upon the destny of the country. More than half a century ago they were the advsers of ts rulers, and they represent today, not wholly, but very largely,, the best thought of the country. KENKFTS OF THE X KAY. Blnd Students Mstnnsh Letters Through the Enteroscope. ST. LOUS, Dec. 3. Dr. Heber Roberts of ths cty, whose vared and successful experments wth the X rays have attracted wde attenton, has recently drected hs experments to beneftng the blnd. The results of these experments called forth adverse crtcsm from Ncola Tesla, whch wll shortly appear n the "Electrcal Revew." Ths crtcsm was shown to Dr. Roberts today, to whch he repled: "Professor Tesla s wrong n statng that have promsed sght to the totally blnd. clam, however, that progress has been made. ntervews have already been prnted wth me n whch dsclamed the possblty of makng practcal use of the X ray n the totally blnd. know of no materal that wll reflect the X ray. The ray must be focused upon the optc nerve f we get the concepton of forms, but ths s not necessary to get the mpresson of the X ray and the changng nfluence created by passng opactes. " cannot state at ths tme what, f any. benefcal results may be obtaned from the use of the X ray wth the nervous and hemorrhagc afflcted." Whle Dr. Roberts was talkng a number of students from the Mssour School for the Blnd came nto hs offce. One of them was named George Smth. He s about 8, and cannot see anythng. He cannot locate an electrc lght n a room. To prove hs asserton Dr. Roberts put the boys face to the flueroscope and turned on the current. Between the crooks tube and the flueroscope the lttle ball to whch the leaden letters A, B, C, were pasted was adusted. Smth recos nzed them. Another student from the Blnd School named Lous Smth was then tred. He can see lghts and shadows, but cannot make out letters. n a brght electrc lght he could no read the leaden letters on the board. Wth the flueroscope he could read and dstngush them. "Professor Tesla says you cannot see those letters wth the X ray any bet ter than wthout," sad the doctor to the boy. "Professor Tesla does not know," he answered. " know what see. Wthout the X ray all s a blur." "All that has been done so far," sad Dr. Roberts, "s merely ground work. f no advance s made from now on, what has been so developed wll be utterly worthless from a practcal standpont. We must smply keep on workng, n the hope that future dscoveres may utlze and make t of practcal value." AN HSTORC CYPRESS. There s a cypress n the vcnty of Padua whch s looked upon as havng been a contemporary of Julus Caesar: and. accordng to another and more plausble legend, t was aganst the trunk of ths tree that Francs. sayng. "All s lost save honor." endeavored to break hs sword. Presents. AH EXCELLENT BUSNESS YEAR All Lnes Represented n Ths Column. Everythng: From a Needle to an Anchor Tool Chests or Damonds. The present season among the merchants s the best they have had n many years, due, no doubt, to the enormous crop of sugar and tho consequent loosenng up of money. Wth most of them the stock kept has been larger and more vared than usual. Some have gone nto more expensve artcles, belevng that wth the good tmes the nclnatons of the publc would be toward a better class of goods. But n shoppng the people fnd much to ther surprse, that these knowntobehghprc ed goods are from 20 to 40 per cent lower than they were two or three seasons ago. Ths may be due to a reducton n the cost of manufacturng, but the secret s probably found frst, n the fact that there s greater competton, and agan because the Honolulu merchants have learned to buy better than they formerly dd. Nearly all the large manufacturers n the East have found t necessary to establsh agences on the Pacfc Coast, and the dealer, buyng from them nstead of through ther own agents, get the beneft of larger. dscounts. The Hawaan Hardware Company, on Fort street, near Queen, has been known for several years to be the headquarters for goods n useful lnes suted to the tastes of people who enoy gvng and recevng Chrstmas gfts. The trade n ths establshment has always been large, and ths year t s not an excepton. The show cases n the store contan many useful noveltes at low prces and suted to ether lades or gentlemens use. Ther specal lne s lamps, and hey have them for every magnable use. The brg rwn brought them a very large stock, whch wll be put n the show rooms today or tomorrow. But there are other thngs for people who do not wsh lamps. A specalty here s sets and sngle peces of sold slverware n beautful desgns. "Mclnernys" s where people go for hghclas s haberdashery for the reason that the goods are carefully selected from the best Englsh and Amercan markets. There s scarcely anythng n frstcla ss the shops of New York or San Francsco that cannot be suppled by Mclnerny. Amercan soft hats or Chrstys celebrated Panamas are here sde by sde wth the best grades of Amercan made umbrellas. There are day shrts and nght shrts, collars and cuffs. Braces and handkerchefs, towels and perfumery, smokng ackets, paamas, leather belts, sashes and tes of every shade and color, and the same expresson apples to gloves. Thes.t goods are found n the corner store; next door on Fort street are two larg" warerooms flled wth footwear for men. women and chldren. n these lnes the stock s as complete as mod ern manufacture, modern methods of buyng and unlmted captal can obtan. The Pacfc Hardware Company lm ts ts stock of Chrstmas goous to handsome lamps, beautful crockery and a very large assortment of pant ngs by D. Howard Htchcock, Mrs. Helen Kelley and Hugo Fsher. Besdes the work of these artsts, there are engravngs and photoengravure s, handsome photographs on platnotype paper, whch so closely resemble steel engravngs, as to deceve almost anyone. For the assortment of pctures, there are frames to match and tnough moldng to buld a fence around Oah u. Ths company has been so busy Hghest of all n Leavenng Metropoltan street cars "always room for one more." There s somethng about a drug store to wn a ladys heart besdes good soda water. At the Hobron Drdg Company, corner of Fort and Kng tdreet?., there are so many thngs that one s staggered n makng a selecton. n perfumes the celebrated Rogers & Gallet s are leaders for Chrstmas pres ents, because they are put up n such beautful packages, and because of tho qualty. The odors are mld n a way. but of suffcent strength to be lastng. And they are not offensve to tho olfactory organs of the most fastd ous, therefore, f a lady passes you on the street and leaves a tral of strongly smellng musk, you may depend upon t that t s not Rogers &. Gallels. Among the other ChrstmaH goods at Hobrons are tolet sets, mancure sets, combs, brushes, etc., any of whch would make a very acccptabu gft. Gong down town agan, the shopp?r wll fnd much to nterest her at the Hawaan News store on Merchant street, opposte Bshops Bank. Although there are two large rooms n ths establshment, the shelves are so crowded wth toys, statonery, Chrstmas cards and muscal nstruments, and wth customers that when an opportunty s obtaned to get near the goods they are so beautful as to confuse the buyer. Everythng, from the toy for the lttle one, to the present for the aged, may be found here. H. W. Schmdt & Sons new estab lshment n the Von Holt Block s replete wth. dry goods. They make no specal preparatons for Chrstmas, for as Mr. Schmdt remarked to a reporter for ths paper: "ts always Chrstmas wth us, and we are prepared for t." The lowest prced goods n the store are 20 yards for $, and the quantty goes from that down, accordng to the qualty. The frm mports drect from the Unted States and Europe, and the stock s very complete. Talors good are somethng new to Schmdt & Sons, but the stock s large and growng. Some of the latest goods to arrve are brocade satns and French slks. The patterns n these goods are the very latest, and are entrancngly beautful. The bg prze doll n the wndow of the Wall, Nchols Company has at tracted the attenton of purchasers to t and other thngs on the nsde of th store. The run on ther Chrstna goods has been toward books of every descrpton, some for chldren am others for grown folks. The doll mentoned above goes to th lttle grl under 0 who wrtes the best worded letter to old Santa Clans. So far not many chldren have wrtten, so that there s a splendd opportunty for some brght lttle grl to become the possessor of a very pretty doll. Letters wll be receved untl noon on Thursday. "Dmonds" has become almost a household word durng the past year. and hs sales ths season have surpassed hs fondest expectatons. Buyng an he does, drect from the largest manufacturers n Europe, low prces obtan n hs establshment. Nt satsfed wth offerng elegant goods at low prces, he has provded addtonal at tractons for hs customers n the Royal Hawaan Quntette Club. Ths band of excellent muscans has provded entertanment for hundreds of people, whle they were examnng the beautful thngs on the counters and Dmo nd show cases. For the holdays Mr. has offered stoves, refrgerator: crockery and glassware, lamps of every descrpton, candlabras, table cutlery, slverware, sold slver, cut glass and noveltes n household utensls. H. F. Wchman has made a specalty of cut glass n hs advertsements tls year, but the customer who goes nto hs store to buy wll fnd that everythng s a specalty, and one lne s not put ahead of another. True enough, the cut glass s beautful and shnes lke damonds n the glare of the electrc lght. The stock of ewelry, da monds and noveltes n sold slver n ths establshment has never been equaled, and Mr. Wchman reports a very large holday trade. Smokers requstes are sold by Hollst er & Co., at the corner of Fort and Merchant street. The stock of ppe, cgar and cgarette holders and ash trays exposed by ths frm make sck the" heart of the man who delghts n such thngs, but who has nether money or frends to help hm on the way to ther possesson. The agta mm n favor of the West ndes sugar ndustry has acqured large poltcal n terest n England and bds far to be come ntatve towara a revval o protectonsm. n mnsteral crcles the agtaton s not at an rensnea. me.mnsters know that an ncreasng body of ther supporters are eager to seze the de cay of the colonal sugar ndustry as leverage toward a revval of protecton generally. ord Salsbury, whle the last Conservatve Government was n power, determned n favor of what was termed "recprocty," or some sys tem that would check the destructve nterference of bountes upon the colo nal produce. t wll be recalled that the London conference, presded over by Baron Henry de Worms, now Eord Prbrght, dscussed ths queston of recprocty and after long sttngs arrved ax no concluson gvng a remote ndcaton of how to balance conflctng nterests Now that the foregn bounty system threatens the absolute extncton of the colonal sugar trade, the Conser vatves want decsve legslatve acton The predctons n Englsh free trade quarters that the European countres would get tred of payng bountes to gve England cheap sugar and provn false. The fear now s that once the extncton of Brtsh colonal products s accomplshed the Brtsh consumer wll fnd hmself n the power of Cont nental rngs whch wll rase prces at ther wll. The stuaton has become so acute farreach ng wth such possbltes of an alteraton n Englsh commerca polcy that the representatve of the Unted States Assocated Presses has felt t advsable to ntervew some of the chef men concerned n the agta ton. T. E. Ohlsen, secretary of the West nda commttee, stated that the chef consderaton of a Government commsson would be remedal meas ures for the dstress n the West n des, and connected therewth the grantng of mperal loans (admnstered through the local Governments on certan condtons of nterest, etc to planters who mproved ther estates The West nda commttee was n con stant consultaton wth the Govern ment, urgng t to call a conference and had reasonable hopes that the n fluence of Mr. Chamberlan would be exerted on ther behalf. The commttee was also n communcaton wth promnent foregn pol tcans and commercal bodes. Regardng the queston of the annexaton of the Brtsh West nues to the Unted States he knew that among the planters there was a strong feelng that they would be better treated f absorbed by the Unted States. Touchng the subect of annexaton Nevlle Lubbock, when ntervewed, sad f the West ndes were to be runed and England was determned to contnue her cheap sugar, leavng the West ndes to starvaton, there was gong to be much rotng and blodshed. The educated masses, growers and others whose money and nterests were n the slands were nearly all patrotc Englshmen. But there was ncreasng feelng among them that n the event of the refusal of England to assst, there was but one alternatve the annexaton of the slands to the Unted States. They would prefer to reman Englsh, f they could, but not at the cost of entre run. The Unted States would not allow an ndustry so valuable to the Amercan people to be destroyed, and when the tme came for the West ndan colones of Great Brtan to be taken over by the Unted States, as the colones seemed to be worth nothng to England, she could not offer to sell, but must gve them to the Unted States. West ndan sugar enterng the Unted States duty free would sut the Amercan people and restore the fnances of the slands to a flourshng a few years. condton wthn Valuable Real Estate. THE PA LAMA MSSON. The Chrstmas gatherng at the Palama Chapel Monday evenng was a splendd demonstraton of the rrand work that s benr done for the many chldren n the Palama dstrct who have heretofore been left to run wld. Somewhat removed from the relgous center of the cty, t has been mpossble to catler anv number of these chldre n nto the Sabbath school, the Y. M. C. A. or any of the nsttutons for gvng the youth a hgher moral educaton than that of the street. Hut a few months have passed snce the frst gatherng was held n the Palama Chapel, but n those few months a wondrous change has been wrought. The hovs and grls were frst brought nto the Sabbath school. They were few n number and came through curostv as much as anvthn g. Xow we fnd the numbers place to healthy, actve nterest. The boys club, the kndergarten, both well attended, are but the frst evdences of the hungry mouths that wen; watng to be fed wth the moral food that wll develop ( lrta manhood and womanhood. Honolulu s a small cty, but the hstory of ths Palam a M.ro n has thus far proven that the emrch must reach out beyond the borders of ts edfce and establsh smaller church homes where dstance wll be no barrer to attendance, and an ndvdualty gven whch wll nspre a desre to make the mso n as powerful n the secton allotted to t as s the mother church from whch t derves assstance for the tme beng. The Portuguese Msson furnshed a good example, am there s no reason why the efforts n Palama should not be equally well rewarded. Presdent Kreuger and hs colony have excted much adverse comment n the Urtsh press on account of the oppressve measures taken aganst Asatc traders Hndu merchants who are lrt sh subects. The P.rtsh naturally take the acton as a move to guard aganst P.rtans ncreasng power. Thsma be true to some extent, but Presdent Krueger may be credted wth a long head when he puts hs foot down to check Asatcs. Hs people have made the Transvaal a whte mans country, and anyone of any experence wll honor them for drectng measures that wll con tnue t as such. Oeneral Weyler started out not long snce to wpe out the Cuban nsurgents before Chrstmas. Xow he has determned to allow the nsurgents to "run wld untl after Chrstmas Ths s a most mercful proceedng, snce t s forced upon the great Spansh general, and to all appearances AVeyler wll feel the chll of the Chrstmas season more than he antcpated wthn hs Havana castle, where he has fled for refuge. Tt s sad that Mark A. TTanna began to lay plans for the nomnaton of McKnley two years ago, when the present Presdentelec t was hs guest at Thomasvlle, da. 5 YACHTS N MARBLE. UNQUE MEMORAL TO THE LATE VCE COMMODORE COLT. A Balldlng of Stone Mot Klaborately Carvt g n Krntu Vartou Outdoor Sports Erected at Hartford b Mrs. Elzabeth Colt. Hartford poasesse.s one of the ncwt unque memoral buldngs n the country. t was recently dedcated and thrown open for nspecton. The structure was erected by Mrs. Elzabeth Hart Jarvs Colt, wdow of the nventor of the Colt revolver, to the memory of her deceased fcon, the late Vce Commodoe Colt of the New York Yacht eub. Work on the memoral was begun n 894 and has been completed under the exsenat or supervson of John. Hlls of Hartford, the desgn beng furnshed by Mr. E. T. Potter of New York.. The late Vce Commodore Colt was a man devoted almost exclusvely to outdoor sports, and he was especally fond of yachtng. All summer long he was to bo found on board hs yacht, and t was only durng the wnter that he returned to hs Hartford home. He took am nterest also n all knds of feld sports as well. The memoral buldng s soldly constructed of stone, moste!alorately carved n desgns representng the varous pastmes n whch ho took pleasure. The most strkng feature n the embodment of ths dea s that the buldng a studded on all sdes wth the prows of shps, cut from sold stone. These prows represent those of warshps, yachts and salng vessels of almost every knd. A representaton of the yacht Dauntless, whch was owned by Mr. Colt, s carved from a huge block of Oho freestone, formng a part of the balcony on tho north sde. Many of the other carvngs are from desgns suggested by Mrs. Colt, who took great nterest and pleasure n 7 My;?w!?rJa ll MH HH V COLT MKMOKAL BULDNG. preparng them and gvng nstructons to the artsts. The two man entrances are each supported by mposng columns of Scotch grante. There are four of these, 0 feet n heght and 2 feet n dameter, and they support stone lntels whch bear the nscrptons, "Erected A. D. MDCCCXCV," "n Memory of," "Caldwell Hart Colt," "By Hs Mother." The carvngs on these captals are to represent anmate and nanmate nature as seen on land and sea. On the east sde are carved shells, tho compass, blocks and other shppng tackle; on the west the heads of bullocks, buffaloes, deer and lambs, whle oak leaves and pne needles are most artstcally grouped beneath. Over the man doors s carved the hosptable nscrpton, "Welcome." At tho east man doors are two columns of Quncy grante, on the captals of whch are carved representatons of agrculture and physcal scence. The grante columns of the west door are surmounted wth captals carve d wth representatons of lterature and the drama. The antes are also carved to represent land and sea. On the east sde of the man entrance are two large wndows wth Mlford grante columns, surmounted by carvngs representng sprng and summer, the two seasons denoted by buddng flowers and flowers n full bloom respectvely. The chef feature of the nteror s an audence hall n whch 00 persons may be seated. Tho starway leadng from the man entrance to ths hall s of cut Portland and Oho stone. There are eght small lancet wndows on a lne wth tho steps, and above these are 24 small wndows, alp of the same sze, wth tny panes of leaded glass set nto the stonework. On the platform landng s a balcony carved out of a sngle sold stone whch weghed 20 tons when t was put n postou. On the south sde of the laudng s a wndow lookng nto the assembly room. Ths wndow s flanked on ether sde by a green spar column. These columns are somethng unque and are unlke anythng of the knd n the country. They are of a most exquste green color and were secured especally for the memoral. On the south sde of the hall s the trbune, or rased platform. On the wall back of t s hung the portrat of the late Mr. Colt whch was panted by Eastman Johnson, the celebrated portrat panter. Besde t s a beautful wndow of staned glass. The eght corbels supportng the roof are the carved prows of shps, and on each prow s a sheld on whch s carved a yacht sgnal. On ether sde of the trbune s carved a shp under full sal. The floor of the trbune s of marble, rased sx nches above the hall floor, the latter beng of maple. The four wndows of the trbune are flled wth marble panels, on whch nscrptons are cut, and there are other carvngs desgned to perpetuate the memory of the late Mr. Colt. n the basement of the memoral s a gymnasum 36 by 68 feet, n whch there s a full equpment of athletc apparatus as well as bowlng alleys, pool and bllard tables. There s a clu broom for lades n the east wng and one for gentlemen n the west wng. Ths part of the memoral s only a suggeston of the fne gymnasum wth whch Mr. Colt, f he had lved, would probably have enrched Hartford. C. J. Bowdex.. TELEGRAPHERS TALES. A. Newfoundland That Kept Watch Valo of t rolled Mukrat Telegraph operators have queer experences at tmes especally at the lonely ralroad statons where travel s lght, hours long and the work s done at nght. An experence meetng of salors, so fax as the yarn spnnng s concerned, s as mld compared to a telegraphers socal sesson as mlk s to a tars shore leave. Several knghts of the key were sttng about a table down town after hours recently, when the tongues began to wag about experences. Gl Bradley started the ball. " was sent one nght to sub on the Texas and Pacfc at a lttle staton called Gordon," he sad. "There was one hotel of four rooms a mle from the telegraph staton and two or threo cabns about the same dstance ol The regular operator had ha rooms over the staton and freghthouse, where supples were receved for the coal mnes several mles away. t was the lonelest place ever struck, but had to work. After fxng thngs lay down on a bench to wat for the next freght. suppose dozed, for umped up wth a start at feedng a cold, wet nose shoved nto my face. There was a. bg Newfoundland dog waggng hs tal as merrly as a buzzsaw cuts through soft wood. Well, that dog ran frst to the lghted lantern on the door, then back to me, and then pretty soon began to thnk somethng was wrong. Up got, and he led me all through the freghthous e, up to the operators rooms and back to the offce ; then calmly went to sleep wth one eye open and one ear prcked up. wated for the tran, but before heard t he began to bark. "The next nght the same performance. Well, after that used to go to sleep, and for the week was there that dog kept watch. You see, the regular was fond of. sleep at nghty so ho could play poker all day. never told on hm, but that was a well traned dog." "Thats no experence," sad Blly Marshall. "There was only half a thrll n that. Why, n 888, durng tho blzzard, was holdng down a nght ob n New Jersey. t was the drearest spot that a ralroad offcal could pck out for a staton. t was so quet n the daytme that you could hear tho sunlght glnt and at nght tho shadows fall. t was snowng when went on at nght, and all trans were blocked, and by mornng was almost bured. My lunch was long ago gone, and felt lke grndng my teeth nto some breakfast. Dnner tme came and went, supper hour passed, and no relef arrved. chewed on lead pencls and rubber bands untl felt lke a grl bookkeeper. pulled n my belt and nearly cut myself n two, but the old hunger was there ust the same. So tred to sleep, but there was no sleep n me wth that gnawng at my stomach. 4 All at once saw three muskrats come up through a hole n tho floor. Muskrat was better than starvaton, so made for them wth a poker, klled one, and the others got away to freeze to death. Sknnng that fellow and dressng hm ddnt take long, and wth wre rgged a broler. THE PACFC COMMERCAL ADVERTSER: HOXOLULtT, DECEMBER 22, S96. You bet your lfe the smell of that cookng rat was ust great oy, and m no chnk ether. t ust tckled me so that fell asleep and only woke up when he was so burned that the odor nearly choked mo. "The snowplow came along soon, however, and when got flled up agan was sort of glad hadnt put down the old muskrat after all. He mght not have agreed wth me. " New York Sun. The Scence of Smles. The gentle art of smlng s the latest thng whch scence has been meddlng wth, tracng back to ts very begnnng and pontng out wth somethng lke a sneer how ths facal expresson frst came to adorn the face of prmeval man. Mr. Edward Cuyer, n a recent lecture n Pars before the Socete danthropolog e, stated that our smles, however wnnng to outward seemng, are smply records of our very remote ancestors selfshness, greedness and pugnacty. The passon that domnated all others n prmtve man was the desre for food. The anmals of those days were huge and ferce, and the mplements of huntng few and crude. The naked hunter, therefore, was forced to go ofttm es wth an empty stomach, but when he made a kll he gorged hmself wth meat. The antcpaton of the approachng satsfacton of hs hunger caused hm to open hs mouth and show bs teeth, partly through pleasure and partly through an nstnctve mpulse to get hmself n readness for the mmedate stowng away of hs food. Wth the progress of cvlzaton, however, ths facal contorton grew to be caused by other pleasurable thngs, and then came the sound of audble laughter. The graceful smle of the hostess, therefore, as she receves her guests s merely an nherted expresson of satsfacton derved from a savage progentor who antcpated a good tme when he had people to dnner or for dnner. Agan, the open smle of more open pleasure s smply a survval of the gapng mouth wth whch the semsman prepared to tackle roast grandmother. New York Journal. A Producer. " took a sled and some dogs and a natve," sad Jansen, "and started out to take hm the thngs he needed most and to brng hm back. t took us three days to ge to Duval. He was very weak. When we were about a thrd of the way the dogs gave out. Next Duval gave out, and we bult a snow house and put hm n t. The natve and tred to hurry along to get a relef party. was no good. Fnally told the natve to go on. A lttle after he had gone the ce broke up and the pece was on floated away. t. was open sky and ce, and was out for sx days and fve nghts wth nothng at all to eat. When the ce closed up agan tred to travel nland. met the relef party of four, two for each man, that had been sent out after Duval and myself. "They took me to the staton. On the thrd day Capt. Clsby decded to amputate my toes and the heel of my rght foot. Almost all the flesh on my feet had to go, too.. He had for n a razor, a fne saw made from a pece of watch sprng, a fle, a buchers backsaw and a carpenters chsel. Every surgeon who has seen my feet snce says that wth the best nstruments n a hosptal the operaton could not have been done better." Last year the Eva completed her cargo of 250 barrels of ol and a ton of whalebone. Capt. Clsby was klled at Cumberland Gulf, whle unsteppng a mast, n August of ths year. ENERGY S WHAT TELLS. Results puts a chapter of phlosophy n a pellet when t says: "f advertsng could succeed wthout energy there would be too many men n t. The benefts of advertsng only come to the men who follow t up." n other words, the natural law apples as well n the commercal world. t s the fttest that survve. So n busness. Among a multtude of advertsers t s the energetc advertser who gets hs share of whatever trade s gong, whether tmes be dull or not, and helps by hs example to dsspate the ghost of dullness. potash, when t struck one of hs pupls, Charles Saura by name, that a combnaton of phosphorus wth the detonatng chemcal mght furnsh a far more satsfactory means of kndlng a fre than the old flnt and steel. He set to work upon the problem, and hs experments and those of hs frends were attended wth success. A year or two afterward M. Ncolet vsted Austra, and gave the dscovery away to German manufacturers. Wthout wshng to rob M. Saura of the posthumous glory whch appears to be the only rewardof hs ngenuty, patrotsm compels us to clam the mert of beng the real nventor for one of our own naton. Mr. Walker, of Stockton, by the use of chlorate of potash and sulphde of antmony, was makng frcton matchs as early as 829. Young Saura very lkely never heard of hs process, but the Germans certanly dd, and t was from hs orgnal dea that ther trade sprang up and fructfed untl the composton of cheaper wood and labor and of mproved machnery drove them out of the market. EVERYBODY WAS PLEASED. NVENTOR OF MATCHES. " see by the Amercan papers," remarket the Kng of the Cannbal slands to the newly arrved mssonary, France, says the London Chroncle, s about to honor wth a statue the "that there s now a decded obecton man who dd not nvent lucfer on the part of your church authortes matches. n 830, t seems, M. Ncolet, professor of chemstry at Dole, n the Jura, was llustratng before hs class the explosve propertes of chlorate of to sendng out as mssonares young men who use tobacco n any form." That s true," repled the mssonary. " use nether lquors nor tobacco, and the dea s spreadng, as you say, that mssonares, should abstan from both." "t s a very good dea, ndeed," added the Kng. " regard the movement wth consderable satsfacton. t pleases me greatly." " suppose, then, you thnk wth us that for a mssonary to drnk and smoke detracts from hs nfluence?" " suppose t does, but was not thnkng of that partcularly. was alludng to the fact that a person whose system s saturated wth ncotne s utterly spoled for roastng. The very best you can do wth hm s to use hm for smoked meat." THE RCHEST MAN ON EARTH. As the uncontrolled master of the Russan Treasury, says London Truth, the Czar s the rchest man on earth. He rules a greater extent of terrtory than any other Soveregn. No other Court than hs can show as much archac or modern splendor. Hs army s actually and hs navy s becomng the bggest that there s. Ctms Class n Aron Hall Yesterday. The closng dance for ths term of Mrs. Gunns dancng school for chldren, was gven n Aron Hall yesterday afternoon. There were between CO and 40 chldren present, neatly and dantly dressed for the occason. All seemed bent on a good tme, and above all, to show what they had learned to do n the realm of the lght fantastc. Each wee couple, smlng and happy, lthly and blthly moved about upon the floor to the musc of the pano. Then, as a dverson for a few moments, lttle Helene rwn danced the hornppe, to the delght of all present, among whom were not a reatvfew grown people the parents, es and frends of the youthful dancers. Refreshments were served, goodbyes were sad, and then the merry gatherng departed to meet agan next term. SEVEN WONDERS OUTDONE. Let antquty cease ts babble. ts Seven Wonders of the World are wonders no more. ts fame s eclpsed. Hereafter, or, at least, tll the century ends, says an Englsh ournal, let us talk only of the Fve Wonders of Pars. For at the Parsan Exposton of 900 we shall see a quntuple of extraordnary devces that wll wpe memores of past marvels out of exstence. The frst wonder wll provde an aeral ourney more than 900 feet above the earth! The scheme s to swng a mda r suspenson ralway from the top of the Effel Tower to the summt of the dstant Trocadero, from whch wll be hung, by rollers, chars makng the ourney back and forth. The Effel Tower s 95feet hgh. f shootng through the clouds n a canebottom ed char s not sensatonal enough to str the blood of our modern novelty lover, let hm enter the surveyng tower, whch wll be bult clo e by. There s nothng partcularly startlng about the suggeston of a surveyng tower, you say. Just wat tll you hear all. You wll enter a leanng cylndrcal tower about 50 feet hgh, and made of tempered steel. t looks lke nothng more mposng than a metallc Tower of Psa. You wll fnd a crcular seat nsde, capable of holdng about 20 persons. You wll st down and probably grasp the ralng pretty tght, meantme holdng your breath. When the seats are all flled you wll suddenly shoot up nto the ar for a dstance of 200 eet. You wll then dscover that your tower s made of concentrc steel tubes that telescope nto each other, and that you are at the apex of the nnermost and now uppermost secton. But the bg tower wll not stand straght up. t wll bend over, ranbow fashon, n a long arc, wth you danglng at the end of t. for all the world lke a fsh at the end of a swayng rod. Then t wll revolve slowly from ts base, swngng you n a wde crcle over a large secton of the Exposton grounds, and fnally land you on a statonary tower, down whch you drop by an elevator to the ground. The scheme of ths tower was chosen as the most startlng of 500 remarkable suggestons. ENGLS SUGAR NDUSTRY. LONDON, Nov. 25. The "submarne sentnel" s the name of a new apparatus, whch has qute recently been expermented wth by the French navy. The fnal tests were made n San Juan Bay by a specal commsson, consstng of Captan Fort, commander of the French armorcla d Magenta; Leutenant Serres, the adutant of Admral Gervas, and a number of offcers from the French Medterranean squadron. The apparatus, whch was operated from the torpedo boat Sarrzn, succeeded n explodng two automatc torpedoes whch had prevously been placed n the channel navfgaton, but wthout the knowledge of the commander of the Sarrzn. The successful result of ths offcal test has been submtted to the French Mnster of Marne, and the adepton of the submarne sentnel by the French navy was strongly recommended by the commsson to the hgher authortes. n the report Captan Fort stated that t was the only apparatus so far known offerng the advantage of beng able to clean the bottom of channels of hostle waters from explosve obstructons placed theren by the enemy.
