The refnng and cultvatng nfluence of these works of art upon the young people cannot be over-estmate- d. Kamehameha School has upon ts grounds the Bshop Museum, the fnest and most complete collecton n the Pacfc. t s rght that Punahou ahould have the ART GALLERY of the slands, and t s hoped that choce works of art wll be loaned from tme to tme. They wll be open to the publc at all tmes, though there wll be certan days each week when a specal nvtaton wll be gven. The tower over the man entrance s on a substantal base of sold masonry for the sake of the ASTRONOMCAL OBSERVATORY n the dome. The extreme dmensons of the buldng are 104x70 feet, and the heght from the ground to the top of the observatory wll be about 75 feet. The archtects are to be congratulated upon the desgn of ths edfce, whch has been pronounced by many school authortes n the East to be excellent n every detal. The contract for the stonework was awarded to Mr. Arthur Harrson, who has already completed the foundaton and s rapdly pushng forward the walls. Under the careful management cf Superntendent Barwck THE COLLEGE GROUNDS have been greatly mproved durng the last few years. One hundred and twenty brought up from the South Rpas hv tha Mornncr Star, have been set out durng the last three years, and some o these naye reacnea a heght of ten feet. Over two thousand pneapples were canned last year at the college for home consumpton. Chna oranges, papaa.5, guavas and mangoes are also canned n consderable quantttes for the THE BOARDNG DEPARTMENT. whch has never been n better condton than today. The food s wholesome, abundant acd well served, and the rooms are spacous and comfortable. A laundry s carred on n a specal buldng n one corner of the grounds. THE PREPARATORY SCHOOL, at 73 Beretana street, on the ste of the old Armstrong home, has just opened ts thrteenth year, and provdes a course of study, mproved from tme to tme, thoroughly ft tnt: the pupls for the college. An efll cent corps of teachers has been carefully selected and retaned, and ther work has been fathful and panstakng. Mss M. A. Brewer has been the prncpal snce 1SS9 exceptng last year and has been very successful n the management of the school. The work at TE COLLEGE has been unusually satsfactory ths year. Mr. Perre Jules Fren teaches the French language, hs natve tongue, and also the Greek. Frl. Anna H. Hasforth, of nsterburg, Prussa, conducts the German classes and gves nstructon n calsthencs; Mr. A. Young men and young women are carefully prepared for Amercan colleges and unverstes, and those who are now n Yale, Prnceton, AVesleyan and other nsttutons, have by ther standng shown evdence of thorough tranng. Mr. W. E. Beckwth, nephew of Rev. Dr. Beckwth, and a graduate of Wllams and Eastman's busness col- - lege, wll arrve n tme to assume mmjbz charge of the new busness college department whch opens Jan. 7th, 1895, and t s the purpose of the trustees to establsh a manual tranng school n tne near uture. There s a cryng need of A NEW GYMNASUM, as the classes n calsthencs cannot be conducted successfully out of doors on account of ether excessve heat or wet grass. Besdes, certan apparatus s necessary for the scentfc treatment of undeveloped muscles. Whle Oahu college s n no respect sectaran, t s avowedly a CHRSTAN SCHOOL, and ts nstructors seek to surround the boys and grls entrusted to ther care wth the best nfluence; every effort s make n developng true manhood and true womanhood, and n cul- tvatng a sentment among the youth n favor of reverence and pety, and also of honor, purty, courtesy, respect for authorty and the lghts of others, rememberng that n tbe Bble are the sources of the hgbesc educaton and the hghest lfe, and that the formaton of character s the frst object of all true scentfc educaton. 1 m TELEPHONE WRES ALL RGHT. X.Saturday after f V noon, about two 1 o'clock, Smon Von Topaz, formerly a member of the mounted patrol, sent a bullet crashng through hs bran. ff Hp1 two hours atpr at tht Queen' Hosptal, wthout reganng conscousness. Hs funeral took place Vf.fctpnlav fftprnnnn. nndpr thw n n - t- f "V n x nr whch bfxly the deceased was a mem ber. A detachment from Company E also was n the funeral march, whch was led by the Hawaan band. The nterment took place n Xuuanu Cem etary. There was a report crculated on Saturday to the effect that Von Topaz had not commtted sucde, but was the vctm of foul play. There was no foundaton for the report, however, as crcumstances and the evdence prove that t was a premedtated affar. The ex - polceman owed consderable money about town, and, accordng to a statement made by hm, hs credtors were pressng hm for payment. He felt annoyed at frst, and fnally the mportuntes caused hm to be come despondent. On jvrday nght he called at the polce staton, and n the course of a conversaton he asked f a bullet, sent through the temple, would cause nstant death. He was nformed that t would. He then left, remarkng that he bad made bs wll. Nothng was beard of the eccentrc ndvdual untl the polce were nformed that be had shot hmself n a bouse near Smth's brdge. t was afterward dscovered that he had used 3S-cal-bre a revolver, the ball enterng the head above the left temple. The fatal shot was fred whle he was lyng on hs beu. A coroner's nquest was held on Saturday nght, resultng n a verdct of sucde. A natve woman who had been lvng wth the deceased testfed that he came home on baturuay afternoon, ana alter he had been n the house a short tme, he requested her to go to store and purchase an undershrt for hm. A moment or so after she left she heard the report of a pstol, and turned back to hnd Von Top: n a dyng condton. Another woman stated that the deceased complaned of havng a severe pan n hs chest, and told her at the same tme of hs fnancal troubles. From a hackman t was learned that the deed was premedtated wthout any doubt. The drver says that he took Von Topaz home, and as he alghted, he shook hands aud bade hm good bye, sayng he was gong to blow hs brans out. The hackman thought nothng of the threat, belevng the man to be of unsound mnd. Von Topaz was a resdent of ths country for a number of years, and was about 40 years of age when he took hs lfe. t has beea erroneously stated that he was a marred man and a father. From people who are famlar wth hs prvate lfe, t s learned that he lved wth a natve woman, but was not marred. He was a up to the tme of the revoluton, hack-ma- n when he joned the regular army. Later he was put on the mounted polce force where he remaned untl a short tme ago. y The dead man's room was searched yesterday.
