FRANK WOOD, PRNTER, 352 WASHNGTON STREET, BOSTON..K '"'~ ~f S one looks forward to the festvtes of the last week of March, he cannot but realze that the socal sde of cetechnology s awakng from the dormant state n whch t has,,r, /so long exsted. ~~ Then the sprng concert of the Glee and Banjo Clubs, the Junor Assembly, the French Plays, and, ndeed, the Freshman Dnner, follow each other n close successon, and offer to the study-worn ndvdual a few days of socal gayety and relaxaton. The Archtectural Socety wll open a water-color exhbt durng the week, and the Photographc Socety exhbt wll add to the holday attractons. Whle t mght be sad that rectatons wll suffer, the renewed vgor wth whch they wll agan be assumed wll more than recompense any doubtful loss whch may have been ncurred durng the days n queston. Wth the tranng of the Glee and Banjo Clubs durng the entre wnter, the sprng concert bds far to be n every way most attractve. Those who have charge of the Junor Assembly wll do all n ther power to make the event a merry one, and success s assured; whle the French plays wll open up a new lne of effort whch has never before been undertaken at the nsttute. Nnetyseven should fall n lne wth a well-attended dnner. The proposed "Junor Week" offers a chance for a slght relaxaton, such as the Thanksgvng recess affords n the fall, and t s to be hoped that every student wll gve the Junors such support that the Faculty wll sancton t as they have nvarably done all actons of the whole student body, as well as all worthy plans of any nature. E are sorry to note that many nstructors contnue to mark the members of varous organzatons wth undue severty. Ths s the case partcularly n most of our large and well-known organzatons, such as the Glee and Banjo Clubs. Technology men have alxvays taken a very pardonable prde n the Glee and Banjo Clubs, as beng one of the few student organzatons whch presents to the publc that sde of Technology lfe whch s least understood and apprecated. t s undoubtedly true that there are certan phases of college exstence whch have a fascnaton for people n the outsde world, and especally for the average youth at the tender age when he s about to become a Freshman. Asde from the justce or wsdom of ths taste, he wll nsst n takng a very lvely nterest n
8 THE1 TETCH. the Glee and Banjo Clubs, the Local Socetes, the Fraterntes,-n short, all of those assocatons whch make up what s popularly termed " college lfe." t s not strange, then, that a young man n decdng where he shall spend the four years, often referred to as the most memorable and enjoyable n lfe, should hestate serously before choosng a place where socal dversons are dscouraged, or, at least, vewed wth suspcon. t cannot wvell be argued that such men are not desrable, for we beleve that however unfortunate t may be for the perfect development of a human mechansm, or an anmated text-book, envery man endowed wth ordnary ntellgence and human nature has a certan longng for the delghts and pleasures of socal ntercourse wth hs fellow-bengs. t would seem, then, that smply the consderaton of materal advantage to Technology would justfyt a plea for a polcy less unsympathetc n ths respect. t s needless to dlate upon the ndsputable advantages whch Technology drectly gans from ts socal and athletc sdes: these are fully apparent to those who seek them; but evdently there are stll those who can, but wll not, recognze the beneft from our efforts n these drectons. HE Archtectural Socety has nsttuted a custom for tself whch s n many ways worthy of mtaton by other smlar organzatons at TechnologyT. We refer to the carryng through, at stated tmes, of suppers, whch are calculated to draw the men out and rouse n them an nterest n the purposes of the socety, and, ndeed, a happer nsght nto the advantages of Course V. These suppers have n each case been very successful; and the general satsfacton whch has been expressed over ther result has led the socety to regard these affars as mportant, f not actually necessary, to ts work. The varous papers read, and the approprate talks, make the occason always an nstructve one. n vew of the fact that such excellent results have been attaned by one socety n ths way, t would appear that other organzatons mght adopt the scheme to advantage. The one thng to be looked out for, however, s that no socety should be allowed to degenerate nto a mere eatng club. WORD of complment s surely due to the Athletc Club for ther part n brngng an mportant undertakng to a successful ssue. The proper management of a large athletc meet lke that of last Saturday, calls for the exercse of patence, energy, and executve ablty. These qualtes were happly not wantng when the tme came, and the wdely expressed satsfacton wth the arrangements, and the management of the affar as a whole, reflects much credt upon the Athletc Club and upon ts energetc offcers. E are sorry to be called upon to remnd the secretares of several socetes that ether ther reports are not receved at all, or they arrve too late for publcaton. A small amount of care n ths drecton wll make a consderable dfference n the locals whch appear, and wll ncrease the nterest n the respectve socetes. The fees are one dollar for ntaton and one dollar for each openng of the courts. t s desred to put the Tenns Assocaton on a frm footng agan, and to open some good courts. Ths wll depend entrely on the number of memlbers receved. Every tenns player should not fal to respond to ths appeal. The programme so far announced for "Junor Week" s: Exhbtons by both the Photographc Socety and the Archtectural Socety, durng the entre week begnnng March 26th; the Glee and Banjo Club concert n Huntngton Hall, March 28th; the Junor Assembly n Perce Hall, March 29th; the French Plays n Copley Hall, Marchl- 3 oth; the Freshman Class Dnner, March 3st. Everybody should make a specal effort to attend. We read n an nterestng artcle of the cralad that Mme. 12 THE The New England Champonshp Meetng. THE New England Champonshps held under the auspces of our Athletc Assocaton, together wth the Frst Regment Assocaton, last Saturday evenng n the South Armory, proved to be hghly successful. The games, whch were very well attended, were admrably arranged, and consderable enthusasm was manfested throughout the evenng. The successve events came off wth scarcely a delay, addng not a lttle to the nterest. The frst event of the evenng was the Seventy-fve Yards Run, n whch there were eght tral heats and two sem-fnals. Wefers, of Boston College, won the fnals n eght seconds, followed by Patterson, of Wllams, and Whttemore, of Harvard, thrd. Ths event was followed by the one most nterestng to Technology men; namely, the Class Team Race. On the draw, '96 got the pole, but lost t mmedately to Owen, '94, who kept hs lead and fnshed wth a clear gan of ten yards. On the second relay, Clapp, 95, gave Curtss a stff chase, but the quarter was fnshed wth '94 stll ahead and the other classes fobllowng n order, whch was kept up to the end of the race. n the last quarter, Lord started wth a lead, closely fobllowed by Thomas, '95. Rockwell, '96, made a splendd fght for second place, but owng to the dstance behnd he could only gan on hs opponents to wthn a few yards at the fnsh. The teams of the dfferent classes were made up as bfollows: for '94, Owen, Curtss, Andrews, Lord; for '95, Boeseke, Clapp, Tllnghast, Thomas; for '96, Sears, Bakenhus, Drscoll, Rockwell; for '97, Sumner, McElwane, Wuchet, and Lane. The Thousand Yards Run followed, wth a large feld of contestants. Hll, of Harvard, won n 2 mn sec., followed by Gallegher of Worcester, second, and Lakn of Harvard, thrd. n the Tug of W ar between the Naval Battalon and the Frst Regment, the former won TEACH. easly wth two trals. There were but few contestants n the Half-mle Heavy Marchng Order whch followed. Poland won n 2 mn. 45 sec., wth Gllrary second and J. J. Bradley thrd. n the Runnng Hgh Jump there was a large number of Harvard entres. Stngel, of East Cambrdge, won wth a jump of 5 ft. o10-4 n., wth Chaney of Harvard, second, and Stckney of Harvard, thrd. The Three Hundred Yards Run opened wth three tral heats. Wheelwrght, of Harvard, won the fnals, wth Keane of Suffolk A. C., second, and Whtren of Harvard, thrd. The tme n ths event was sec. The Harvard Class Team Race proved to be one of the most nterestng events of the evenng. Nnety-fve won by a pretty race, followed by Nnety-four, Nnety-sx and Nnetyseven. The tme made was somewhat slower than that made n our own class team race. The runnng of the Hgh Hurdles resulted wth Chase of Dartmouth, frst, Coonly of Harvard, second, and Lord of Technology, thrd. Merrll, of Harvard, prettly won the Sx Hundred from Dadrnun, on the last lap. Blake, of B. A. A., took frst place n the Mle Run, wth Cooldge of Harvard, second, and Allson of Worcester, thrd. The Regmental Company Team Race was nterestng, and was won by Company A, of the Second Regment. The jumpng of M. F. Sweeney, the champon Hgh Jumper of the world, was watched wth a great deal of nterest by all. t was hoped that he would be able to surpass hs record, but owng to varous crcumstances he was unable to do so. A great deal of credt s certanly due to the Leaders of the Assocatons, and the Offcers of the Meetng, for the very satsfactory way n whch everythng was carred out. Beautful slver przes were gven to the frst, second and thrd n each event, and a large number of entres made each well deserved. F L. a M
13 Yale wll not play -wth professonal baseball teams ths year. The Unversty of Wsconsn has a course n sngng college songs. The Harvard 'Varsty took ther frst row on the rver as a crew last week. The cost of the two new dormtores at Harvard s estmated at $250,000. The U2nvc1rsy fcv'czv for February contans a drectory of college publcatons. Prof. -enry Drummond has been called to the presdency of McGll Unversty, Montreal, Canada. Chauncey M. Depew delvered the Washngton address at Smth College on Washngton's Brthday. Attendance at Chapel s stll compulsory at Prnceton, many reports to the contrary notwthstandng. The Faculty at Cornell are consderng the advsablty of lengthenng the college year at that nsttuton. The Harvard and Yale football teams were lately gven a dnner n New York by the resdent Yale alumn. A company of Harvard students are to act the " Phormo" of Terence n Sander's Theater, Cambrdge, n Aprl. The Unversty of Chcago cleared about forty thousand dollars last summer by rentng ts dormtores to World's Far vstors..t11t1a) M TREH. Mltary drll wll probably be dscontnued at Stanford, owng to the lack of nterest - r ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ among the students, only fve takng the course ths term. Mr. Fred W. Pckard, of Bowdon, s gettng up a 'Cycle Tour through the Brtsh sles for the summer of '94; the party s lmted to twenty students. Students from any college may jon. The Yale Scentfc School has added botany and French to ts requrements for admsson n 895. n Latn, one more book of Vrgl s added, and an examnaton n standard Englsh works s requred. The Senors at Prnceton wll get out a photograph book, contanng the pctures of '94 men, the most promnent professors, the college buldngs, and the organzatons of the year. The book wll cost only $4.00. Handsome Dan, the Yale mascot, has agan won the hundred-dollar cup whch awas offered by the Amercan Feld Club for the best bull dog n Amerca. He now owns the cup, havng won t a suffcent number of years. The Amherst system of self government s n danger of beng abolshed on account of a dsagreement between the Faculty and the members of the senate. The latter are about to resgn, and the students refuse to elect any successors. "The workng of the new system ntroduced at Massachusetts Tech, by whch the rankng of frst and second year classes wll be determned by means of short, numerous, and unwvarned quzzes and tasks, wll be closely watched by all nterested n educatonal methods."-thc Brunzolznztan. At Prnceton, no proctors or montors are allowed n the examnaton rooms, each student beng strctly on hs honor. Ths system, t s learned, s workng wth great success. ce has nterfered consderably wth the outdoor work of the Yale eght. t s hoped that the outdoor tranng, recently begun, wll not be nterrupted by any more freezng weather.

The naval tug-of-xwar was a pretty feature. The outdoor games of the M.. T. A. C., open only to members, wll be held ths year May 5th. Next Saturday the annual meetng and electon of offcers of the Athletc Club wll be held n Room, at noon. After conference, Secretares Lamont and -erbert have decded to prohbt football matches between Annapols and WVest Pont. There are ffty-seven canddates for the 'Varsty Baseball team. The Arena buldng s hred for practce untl the weather s proptous for outdoor tranng. n the games of last Saturday there were 27 total entres, or 98 ndvdual entres. Ths s the largest lst of entres of any scratch games ever held n Boston. t s a fact that at Cornell the men on the ntercollegate athletc teams have a standng of over two per cent better than the average standng of the xvhole college. The Freshman-Sophomore baseball game wll probably occur durng the frst part of May. May twelfth seems to be the best date for the match, although the managers have come to no agreement as yet. Technology was represented n the New England Team Racng Champonshp at Worcester on March 3d, and won second place. There were seven teams entered, sx of whch competed. The races were run n heats accordng to the Bagnall-Wlde System, and n the frst round M.. T. was beaten by the wnners of the fnal heat. The Tech team ran: Owen, Thomas, Lord and Rockwell. They ran a good race, and the fnsh would have been closer had not Thomas and Rockwell fallen on the sharp corners. Second place was decded by runnng those teams whch had been beaten by the fnal wnner. Worcester Academy defaulted, leavng the Worcester Athletc Club's Second Team vs, Technology. Ths tme Tech was represented by Owen, Clapp, Andrews and Rockwell, and they were easy wnners. As n the tral, Tech lost the toss for the pole, but Andrews took the lead after a sharp spurt, and Rockwell opened out the lead whch had been gven hm. The przes for second place were sx very pret ty wrought-ron lamps wth slk shades. Tech may run another team race wth W. P.. the frst of Aprl. 15 THE TE:C T ODn PROB has agan bestowed hs smlng favor upon us, and the Rogers steps have blossomed as the rose. The l,ounger hestates to ssue the yearly pastel on Buds and 1-rd Voces, for B]uds are scarce, and some varetes of the Brd famly are more so just now, yet t s stll a pleasure to be able to chroncle that for another season the busy students lhave ssued from the dark resorts of wnter and basked n lukewarm sunshne " on the steps." The steps have not yet shed ther clumsy mantle, and the wndow seats have stll a somewhat chllng effect; 1but wthal these petty ncumbrances there s no tme so delghtful as when, after the wnter's hbernaton, the frst opportunty comes to ndulge n md-dclay reveres n full gaze of the passng world of Boylston Street. Once more do old-tme faces appear, and old acquantances are renewed, as one after another stops to exchange greetng and to nhale the brsk ar of these fne M;arch cdays. Agan has the odorferous ppe and more popular cgarette sprung nto promnence, as the merry dlers have congregated to pass the hours wth fancy free. The Boston Unversty grl s agan wth us, and Dame Rumor says she s a trfle more comely than usual. Verly Sprng s upon our heels. Th'l'ese are balumy days n the Sgnal Corps. ts members, who gve ther gratutous servces n ths sphere of usefulness despte the many dsadvantages and dscouragements t nvolves, are fosterng love and veneraton for Amercan patrotsm by exchangng ll-tmed jokes and worse concocted remarks through the medum of energetc gestculatons. These message senders follow wth relgous care the passng events of the day, and by solctous questonngs exchange common cvltes on all those subjects so attractve to the Freshman mnd. Earnest nqures regardng George Washngton, and nsprng remarks on the health of " Leutenant H." are ever popular and n order, and waysde reflectons of less general nterest are by no means neglected. Only the Bugle Corps wth ts perodc strans at melody rvals the sturdy band of sgnal men n pont of nterest, but as regards numbers and general frvolty thle, are scarce to be compl)ared wth the latter august body. ndcleed, as one havng authorty has sad, f the daly ncrement to the Sgnal (Corps contnues, the battalon must needs become an magnary lllantty. l'xcep)tng ths dre possblty whch would gve us one mnghty army of vgorous communcators, t s a clever dsposton that turns all the " ndsposed " nto a common reservor, even though the makng of ll-constructed sgns s the only outlet for pent-up enthusasm, as the hour drags along. t s ndeed a hghly slpeculatvte sutbject for consderaton as to what the shades of Professor Morse would thnk of ths most modern a(laptaton of the famous alphabet. However, as t )revents the reckless cuts of other (lays, and forms a unon of kndred mnds, wth many attractons and boundless possbltes, the Lounger does not complan. Besdes that, t s a harmless dverson for the Freshmen. Now that we have been duly nformed by an artstc crtc, who s, of course, well compl)etent to judglcle hs own work, that the comng " Technque " s to be stunnng," and, as has been knowngly addedl, " for the frst tme," t s, l)erhaps, n order to awat the ('a/1t of our Junor annual b)efore passng comment onl ts perpetrators; but such a startlngly complacent ntroducton as greeted T 'echnology n. Rogers Corrdor, under the desgn of a " stunner," can scarcely escape passng comment. Ths Masterpece of labored artstc skll, wth ts flghty superscrpton, remnds one of those assurng posters,-- the harbngers of town electons, n whch self-confdent canddates bddng for popular favor, set forth ther merts to the excluson of other canddates of equal promse. Publc opnon s ever slow to confrm such flatterng estmatons, however deserved they may be, and bestows prase most begrudgngly upon those who can sng ther own prases so well. f, ndeed, the comng creaton of the Junors, s to follow ths l)precursor's predcton, the Lounger would recommend the Brd as the most fttng object for dedcaton. The Technque Bulletn notces are always a center of attracton, and t s to be hoped that they may be as truly artstc and as devod of personal promnence, as possble. t s, however, only far to say that the Lounger s assured that the present seemng ostentaton s largely due to nexperence, ll-judged enthusasm, and youthful ndscreton; all of whch are, of course, characterstcs oft tmes common to us all.
