Sngle copes, o cts. each For the beneft of students THE TE CH wll be peased to answer all questons and obtan all possble nformaton pertanng to any departnttent of the College. Contrbutons are requested from all undergraduates, alumn, and offcers of nstructon. No anonymous manuscrpt can be accepted. Entered n Post Offce, Boston, Mass., as Second Class Matter. T s wth no small concern - that THE TECH has beheld the crtcal condton n whch the Muscal Organzatons of Technology have been placed. Asde from Athletcs, probably no other lne of student effort s more mportant n developng a true college lfe and n brngng our outsde nterests nto promnence, nor s there any other branch of socal undertakng so worthy of support as the mantanance of the Glee, Banjo, and Mandoln Clubs. To the Banjo Club, especally, Technology has n the past turned wth pecular and honest prde; nether has a kndly sprt of applause n the work of the Glee Club been ever lackng, nor commendaton ever wthheld of the rapd strdes toward more perfect success whch the club has recently made. The Mandoln Club n ts ntal season last year won many laurels throughout the course of concerts. Ths year, however, f report s true, the nterest of the past has so far relapsed that the clubs wll fnd extreme dffculty n successful reorganzaton unless a great deal of energy and enthusasm be dsplayed on the part of those the most closely dentfed'wth the movement, and unless the proper sprt of competton for postons be shown by the student body. The present apathy whch s evnced s wholly dscredtable, and should be frowned upon by every man who has the best nterests of hs college and ts socal undertakngs at heart. n vew of the necessty for mmedate acton, THE TECH hopes to see such an arousng of nterest that effcent clubs wll soon begn tranng for a concert course whch wll, f possble, be far n advance of all prevous attempts. E are glad to see that the opportunty for the study of Latn s apprecated, and a small class n Latn Readngs has been formed ths year. Asde from the study of scentfc termnology, there should be a number each year to study a lterature of whch the best s accessble almost to the begnner. Meanwhle t s nterestng to note that the class s begun wth men from a scentfc course, actng wth the hearty approval of the professor n charge. ONCE more Technology places an eleven n the football Arena, and asks for the hearty support whch such a team undoubtedly deserves. Not only should the fnancal ad from the nsttute at large be suffcent to defray the necessary expenses of a college team, but every player who can assst the eleven at practce n any way should come out regularly. f Technology s ever to be successful n football, t wll be through ths twofold support; and wth the materal at hand, there can be no better year than the present one. t seems a

- 14 THfEl T1EnCH ' A pty that there should be excellent players at college who refuse to play when the postons for whch they are pecularly ftted are now the weakest on the entre eleven, and have been flled only wth extreme dffculty. The fund of materal from whch. the team has been drawn has been ndeed small, and the wthdrawal of these old players s keenly felt. The practce durng the past week was also hampered by the absence of regular members of the eleven. Nothng can be more dscouragng to the captan than ths real or apparent neglect of the work, and half-hearted support. n order to wn success ths year there must be hard practce and conscentous tranng. f every man does hs duty the team wll establsh a record of whch Technology may well be proud. PON Nnety-nne THE TECH desres to urge the prme mportance of early representaton upon ts Board. Wth an unusually large number of men, and wth a constantly ncreasng lst of nterests and undertakngs, the complete record and announcement of class events becomes more and more necessary, and, ndeed, more dffcult unless the Board s able to depend upon the men of the class themselves to advance the news tems. Too often n the past, the lack of sutable acknowledgment, and the apparent dsnterest of the edtors n the Freshman classes, have been drectly due to the men of those classes themselves. The Edtor n Chef wll meet personally any man n Nnety-nne, or n the college at large, who desres to try for the Board, on Saturdays throughout the term at twelve o'clock. For the beneft of all, we wll state that locals are partcularly desrable, and consttute the frst lne of effort. pon once enterng nto the competton for places on the Board, a personal nterest n the work of every man wll be taken and the charman wll stand ready to assst hm n whatever way may be possble. Nnety-seven and Nnety-eght have stll fresh laurels to wn n the edtpral feld, and we would advse a hearty co-operaton on the part of each class, Nnety-seven wll soon be called upbn to take the place of Nnety-sx, and Nnety-eght that of Nnety-seven. The necessty for further representaton s apparent. N an edtoral of last week we referred to the hgh ntellectual tranng whch mght be obtaned at a techncal nsttuton when those n charge were themselves men of broad and lberal culture. t s true, however, that here, as well as elsewhere, the student hmself must be responsble for whatever of beneft he derves from hs college course. n llustraton of our statement, THE TECH feels that t can do no better than to quote from an excellent artcle by E. L. Hall n the September number of The Bachelor of Arls : To a young man who s flled wth a noble enthusasm for study and learnng, wth hgh aspratons and noble ambtons, every Amercan unversty wll afford ample opportunty. As Matthew Arnold says:- 'The seeds of godlke power are n us stll; Gods are we, bards, sants, heroes, f we wll.' n the youth s the true unversty; and unless our boy carres to college a hgh sprt, a love of the beautful, a desre for all thngs true and precous, he wll not fnd them there to be forced upon hm. He wll fnd a splendd opportunty, that s all. N the September number of The Haarvard Graduates' Magazne, always, by the way, a model college perodcal both for lterary skll and for excellent make-up, there s an exceedngly nterestng and tmely contrbuton n the department enttled "From a Graduate's Wndow," n whch the author makes a vgorous plea for the use of Englsh both n collegate ceremones and for mural nscrptons. Wth all respect for the chershed memores of the Past, when Latn was the language of all educated men, the author beleves the tradton now outgrown. Nor does the use of Latn add one wht to the dgnty of any address. Concernng the two methods 6f pronuncaton, the,t wany-weedy-weeky" M a em

- THs TECCH s and theolder style, the wrter wttly remarks: "Although t s now twenty-fve years snce Harvard adopted the elder Weller's predlecton for a ' we,' she stll chooses to confer her honors wth a ' V.'" n regard to the mottoes nscrbed on Memoral Hall, the author says: "The whole buldng s a memoral to Harvard men who lved and thought, and fought and ded n Englsh; they were the brothers, the companons n army and n pece of many of us; they were men of a new race, who gave ther lves to preserve a country whch should n nowse bow before 'The glory that was Greece, And the grandeur that was Rome ;' and here where we have rased a monument to express, as best we may, our grattude, and to perpetuate ther honor, we have panted mottoes above them n an alen tongue. The precepts were n Englsh whch they took up nto ther characters and converted nto heroc deeds; and n Englsh should they be commemorated." PART from all fnancal consderatons, t s our earnest convcton that t s the duty of every student to support hs college paper; to contrbute, f he can, artcles of news or other matters of general nterest to the student body; and to assst n makng the representatve of hs college a credt both to the Students and the nsttuton. Secretares of Socetes are partcularly requested to send notces of future publc meetngs, n order that THE TECH may be referred to for programmes of future, as well as records of current events, n the college world. t s not the polcy of THE TECH to contnuously solct support n these columns; we urge, however, these few consderatons n order to create a more enlghtened self-nterest and loyal sprt whch wll enable us to produce a perodcal truly representatve. The Football Outlook. [ 0HE outlook for the 'Varsty eleven ths year s very encouragng. Although the loss of sx regular men wll be severely felt, there s much new materal, and the eleven s rapdly takng form. Ames, Thomas, Swft, Aultman, Rockwell, Washburn, and Le Moyne leave a bg gap n the team, but '98 and '99 have contrbuted well, and f two of the sx who are now n the nsttute could fnd t possble to come out, matters could be greatly mproved. At present the center of the lne s the strongest part of the team. Captan Manahan at center, wth McCormck, Worcester, lmer, Rott, and Robnson, as canddates for guard, gve assurance of strong, steady work. lmer, especally, has been playng n fne form ths year, breakng through and tacklng well. For tackles, Van Horne, Whtng, and Sprnger are the most promsng canddates, whle, n case of necessty, ether lmer or A. G. Robnson could be moved out from guard. End s the weakest part of the lne at present. Rawsop, of last year's eleven, wll play left end, and Heckle, '99, s the most promsng canddate for rght end. Among the other men tryng for the poston are Watrous, Brown, McBrde, Keys, and House. At quarter back we have two good men n Mansfeld and Warren. Both are experenced players, and Warren played several years on the Worcester Polytechnc Team. Mansfeld s usually a lttle faster than Warren n passng the ball, but the latter s steader. Both are rather lght, and Warren does not accomplsh much n blockng off, whle Mansfeld s weak n tacklng. At half back, Hayden and Howland have returned, but the need of proper substtutes

16 FFEE 16 TETC wll be badly felt. Robnson and Htchcock are both new men, and lack experence. They are slow n gettng nto plays, and not very useful n:the nterference. nderwood wll play full back, and Emery s mprovng fast, both n kckng and runnng. n summng up, the team shows ts greatest weakness at ends and half back. The eleven has been out so few tmes that t s hard to judge the ndvdual players. As a whole, they need practce badly, and some of the men are decdedly undertraned. The schedule of games shows sx and possbly seven home games. The colleges and teams whch Technology wll play seem to be wel selected to meet the requrements of our pecular condtons, Hanover beng the most dstant place the team wll vst. All of the home games wll be played at the South End grounds, and t s hoped that there wll be a large attendance. Technology o, Exeter o. TECHNOLOGY'S frst game of the season was played at Exeter last Saturday, and resulted n a te. The nablty of our eleven to score was due prncpally to ts weakness behnd the lne, and consderng that Exeter had already played several games, the score was not surprsng. The most encouragng featureof the game for us was the strong defensve play of the team, and although the men dd not play together well, and the backs contnually faled to support the ends as they should, the lne as a whole was steady. Ths was partcularly notceable n the work of the three center men, who not only stood frm and allowed but one gan through guard, but broke through well, and dd the best aggressve work when Exeter had the ball. The tackles were necessarly weak, as Brown s really a canddate for end, and Sprnger, although he has the makng of a good man n hm, s nexperenced, and does not follow the ball well. The ends were also C'EH weak. McBrde was slow; he put but lttle lfe nto hs work and dd not break up nterference well. Heckle played a hard game at left end, and only once dd Exeter make a large gan around hs end. Warren was steady at quarter but dd not block off well, and was rather weak at tacklng. Of the backs Hayden dd the best work. He made several very pretty runs and tackled well. Robnson was very slow, and evdently does not understand the poston of half back. Hs faults are entrely excusable as he has never played back of the lne before; wth careful coachng, however, he wll make a valuable man. nderwood was not n hs best form, and dd not buck the lne as well as usual. He punted well, however, and on the whole played steadly, though less cleverly than usual. The team as a whole showed a decded need of practce. The men dd not play together, and were slow n startng. The defensve work was much better than the offensve, and Exeter lost the ball repeatedly on four downs. Of course t cannot be expected that the men wll last well n the frst game of the year, yet some of the lne and Hayden showed lack of tranng, and ths s undoubtedly an nexcusable fault. The game began wth Stuart kckng off to Warren. Technology then made some feeble attempts to advance the ball but faled, and nderwood punted. Stuart of Exeter fumbled the ball, and Technology had the ball n Exeter's terrtory. Exeter's center proved strong, and the ball changed hands twce on four downs. Then Tech. began an apparently straght march for the opponents' goal, but Robnson fumbled at a crtcal moment and the ball agan changed hands. The remander of the half was uneventful except for a beautful run by Gbbons around Mc- Brde for thrty yards. The ball remaned near the center of the feld, and frequently changed hands on four downs untl tme was called.

The second half opened wth a kck-off to Plunkett. Technology secured the ball on four downs, and agan lost a good chance of scorng by a fumble. Exeter made several gans by brngng her ends and tackles over, and Gbbons followed these up by a beautful end run, carryng the ball well nto Technology's terrtory. The ball changed hands on Tech's 25-yard lne, and three tmes the Exeter lne stood frm, and nderwood punted forty yards. About three mnutes before tme was called Technology seemed to wake up, and probably would have scored n a mnute more. The men nterfered better and dsplayed the only evdences of team work seen durng the game. Tme was called wth the ball on Exeter's 20-yard lne. The men lned up as follows: TECHNOLOGY. 14 A_ 18 T'HE T1E3CH. q q Mr. H. A. Gardner, a former graduate of the nsttute, Class of '93, has been gven charge of the second year Drawng Room ths year. The Freshman drll unform wll be the same as that adopted last year, wth the possble substtuton of whte n the place of black cloth n the chevrons. The frst desgn problem for the Junor Archtects ths year s a study of the Dorc Order as used n a " Pavlon between a Grll of Honor and a Portco." Mr. L. M. Azebedo, '98, of Brazl, arrved n Boston on Frday, October 4 th, after a week spent n quarantne at New York, owng to a case of smallpox on board. Much of the effcency of the nsttute Commttee bulletn board s destroyed by the neglect of the secretares of the dfferent organzatons to forward notces of meetngs. The Class of '98 s fortunate n possessng a number of men of marked artstc ablty, whch has been shown by the work already done for the '96 and '97 " Technques." Mr. Shedd, the former nstructor of the second-year Archtects, has been oblged to leave the nsttute on account of ll health. Mr. Gardner has been apponted to take hs place. Captan Bgelow passed through a very tryng ordeal durng the summer. Hs two chldren were serously ll wth typhod fever, but, we are glad to learn, have now nearly recovered. A complete explanaton of the freshman drll queston s contaned n a paper wrtten by Presdent Walker. t s publshed on the frst-year bulletn board, and copes may be obtaned at the offce. - The Frst Annual Recepton tendered to the new students of the M.. T. by the nsttute Y. M. C. A. was held Saturday, October 5th, at 8 P. M., at the cty Assocaton buldng, 458 Boylston Street. The '96 class electons wll be held Saturday, Oct. 2th. Nomnatons made n wrtng, and sgned by not less than fve persons, must be fled wth Mr. H. G. Fsk, Secretary, not later than Thursday, October oth. The frst meetng of the Bologcal Club was held last Saturday, October 5th, n Room. t was devoted to talks n regard to the lfework of Pasteur and Huxley by Professors Sedgwck and Hough, Dr. Bgelow, Mr. Keth, and Mr. Crampton. The canddates for the 'Varsty eleven are McCormck, Hardy, and Manahan, '96; Worcester, Mansfeld, Warren, Goudy, Hooper, Hayden, '97; lmer, Hubbard, Watrous, Clfford, Tew, Smth, '98; Rott, lke, Taylor, Sanchez, and McBrde, '99. The Boston Y. M. C. A., on Boylston Street, has called Mr. R. E. Lews to become College Secretary of Boston. He may be found at the Assocaton Buldng, and wll be glad to render any assstance possble to the students of Technology or other colleges. All books and magaznes taken from the lbrary n the Rogers Buldng must be entered n a record kept by the lbraran, and are not to be retaned beyond the followng day (Sundays and holdays excepted), save by specal permsson. Volatons of ths rule wll result. n excluson from lbrary prvleges. The '98 class electon wll be held Monday, October 2st. Nomnatons made n wrtng and sgned by ten persons, and ten only, must be fled wth Mr. H.. Lord, Secretary, durng the week endng Monday, October 4 th. Extracts from the consttuton bearng on the electon have been posted on the '98 bulletn. A meetng of the class of '98 was held last Frday at P. M. n Room, Rogers. Mr. l : -

lmer made an earnest appeal n behalf of the class football team. The Treasurer's report for the year '94-95 was accepted as read, and a hearty vote of thanks was extended to Mr. Sargent, who has left Technology to enter busness. There has been a marked change made n the Mltary Department ths year, most notably the establshment of a course n mltary engneerng, and the drllng of the whole class on one afternoon nstead of on two, as heretofore. The latter wll gve a good opportunty to Captan Bgelow of performng expermental regmental maneuvers. The cadets wll all drll on the same day nstead of on two dfferent days, as was the case last year. The organzaton wll be that of a sngle battalon nstead of a regment of two battalons. Students takng Course B wll attend the lectures gven n Course A, and n leu of drll wll recte n Wagner's c" Securty and nformaton. The members of the nsttute who were recommended to the War Department ths year by Captan Bgelow, were: E. H. Huxley of Newton, Mass., C. F. Tllnghast of Provdence, C. A. Meserve of Allston, and G. W. Hayden of Roxbury. n case of war these men wll be gven a preference over the other applcants for commssons, owng to ths recommendaton. Presdent Walker's annual address to the Freshmen was gven n Huntngton Hall on Frday, October 4 th. After a warm welcome to the new class, General Walker expressed the hope that the members of '99 mght " soon become acclmated to Boston's weather" and accustomed to the lfe here. He stated that the nsttute was founded "upon the essental manlness of young men," and that no matter how the standard of other colleges may be lowered, Technology wll ever am to mantan the hgh level upon whch she has, up to the.present tme, moved. kph13]e~"' 1 EC A t Heffelfnger wll coach the nversty of Mnnesota team. The Harvard Freshman class numbers 465, a gan of 47 over last year. Wefers, the Boston sprnter, has been takng the Yale entrance examnatons. Lehgh promses to put on the feld an exceptonally strong team ths year. The Cornell muscal clubs, thrty-fve members, have been abroad all summer. The ndan School at Carlsle, Penn., wll put a football team on the feld ths year. The Yale-Harvard champonshp yachtng cup has been won by Yale twce, n 894 and 895. The faculty of Harvard durng the summer confscated all sgns found n the students' rooms. The enterng class of the Harvard Law School numbers 25, of whom 8 axe Yale graduates. Phl. Draper, the Wllams full back, has been dong oo yards n o0 seconds n practce recently. W. C. Wurtemburg, the old Yale quarterback, has developed a strong team at Dartmouth ths year. At Bryn Mawr two new departments have been opened, one of art and archaeology and the other of geology.

20 TrH TT1F'1CH, The Freshmen and Sophomores of Dartmouth have had two rushes, both of whch were won by the Freshmen. t s proposed to have a seres of matches for the freshman champonshp between Amherst, Dartmouth and Wllams. The Lehgh nversty Glee and Banjo clubs made a trp along the New Jersey and New England coasts durng the summer. Harvard and Yale made rather a poor showng n ther openng games, and nether team s as strong as t was at ths tme last year. Brown, Wllams, Amherst, Dartmouth and Andover have adopted the Yale-Prnceton football rules. Exeter wll play accordng to the Harvard-Pennsylvana-Cornell code. The present entrance class at Boston nversty s the largest ever known n the nsttuton. The number already regstered shows an ncrease of ffty over last year. Football practce at Brown ncreases n nterest every day, and the number of men who report for practce s steadly ncreasng. About forty men are at work on the feld. The enterng class of the Yale Law School wll number at least oo. The senor class numbers 60, and the graduate class 25, makng the total membershp of the school about 200. Seven members of the '94 Harvard eleven have returned to college. Lews, center on the '93 eleven, pton, end n '92, and Waters, captan of the '93 team and tackle last year, are coachng the canddates. The nversty of Pennsylvana wll try a new system ths year wth her scrub eleven. Knpe wll organze and captan a regular team, contanng no Varsty substtutes, and havng ts own code of sgnals and system of play. A new char has been establshed n Columba College ths year, to be known as the "Seth Low Professorshp of Amercan Hstory." ts object wll be to mpart accurate nstructon n Amercan Hstory and the development of the prncples of consttutonal lberty. The Boston Herald says: Football runs n the Manahan famly. Tom Manahan made the Harvard 'varsty two years ago, and he would prove a valuable man at the present tme for Harvard at rght tackle, John Manahan s the sturdy center and captan of the M.. T., and a younger brother s now playng rght end for the Englsh Hgh. The freshman class n the scentfc department at Yale wll probably be about ffty men smaller than last year, the addtons n the entrance requrements demandng nearly a year's added work. The standard has also been rased n the law school and as a result about twenty-fve members of the senor class have been condtoned or dropped and have gone to the Columba Law School. The faculty of Harvard College have passed a vote prohbtng any muscal or dramatc performance by Harvard clubs or socetes, except n places to whch, and from whch, the men can travel n one day. Ths has caused a great deal of dssatsfacton among the Hasty Puddng and the Glee Club men, and efforts wll be made to have the Faculty rescnd, or at least modfy, ther vote. The Yale gymnasum has opened for the college year. Henry S. Anderson, who had charge of most of the floor work on the gymnasum the past year, has resgned, and accepted a poston as nstructor of the nversty School, Cleveland, O. Mr. Anderson wll have exclusve charge of the gymnastc work of the members of that school. Hs successor has not been announced. t s probable that two Yale undergraduates who have shown profcency n gymnastc work wll succeed hm. N f - t K 5

,Afrca,,,,, - ~ ~ ~ ~ E TE H2 rhe TECHCM 21 " Tommy" Curts wll play wth ths fall. The 'Varsty Football team s earnest support from the Freshman year. B. A. A recevng class ths The specal commttee of the Baseball Assocaton hope to devse a scheme for payng off the debt. The Freshman class contans consderable good football materal. Ther class team should be well up to the standard. The rule adopted last season to the effect that no 'Varsty football player shall play on hs class team wll serously crpple the Sophomore team ths year. Warren, W. P.., '95, s at Tech ths year, and s a valuable addton to the 'Varsty. He played quarter back on the Worcester Tech team for the last two years. The followng men of last year's freshman football team wll not play on the Sophomore team ths fall: Nesbt, Snellng, Le Moyne (Capt.), Farley, Tobey, Sargent (H. B.), Mara. n lookng over our "new arrvals," there seems to be some excellent athletc materal. The "heavy weghts" should report to Captan Manahan at once, the track men should send ther names to Captan Cummngs. Of last year's 'Varsty team Rockwell, Washburn, and Goudy are stll n college, but are unable to play. Van Horne and Mc- Cormck wll come out later. The other losses are Thomas (last year's captan), Le Moyne, Swft, and Coburn. THE Lounger s glad to make an exclusve announcernent. The second week of term tme fnds the class of Nnety-nne daly playng the role of Freshmen to large and nterested audences. The Lounger's constant am to nstruct leads hm to make ths statement, more partcularly to' brng t to the eyes of the actors themselves. After all, ths s a somewhat expected state of affars, for although a few of the more glarng and protuberant eccentrctes have been removed, there s yet dscernble that pecular somethng whch everywhere betokens Freshman adolescence. Our present Sophomores exhbted all these characterstcs a year ago-a fact whch Nnety-eght would not admt for worldswhch only goes to show how wonderful s the dfference 'twxt the Freshman and hs all-suffcent predecessor. t s, ndeed, true that some lamblke and youthful attrbutes clng to certan men whatever the length of tme they spend n college, and the Lounger, havng had acquantance wth several such specmens, can aver that the experence was not partcularly edfyng. For the sake of Technology and the world at large, let the Lounger express hs hope-later, perchance, hs convcton--that Nnety-nne contans the mnmum number of these ndvduals. Apropos of the progress whch the new men have made, the Lounger mght note the fact that no longer does the shy Freshman wat to be served at the tables n the lunch room. He has seen the expedency of rsng n hs mght and battlng wth the serred columns of hs fellows about the magc dead lne-hght counter-behnd whch le temptngly dsposed the vast array of comestbles for the nsatate throng. The Lounger's use of mltary terms n the above may appear vague, especally to the dogs of war recently unleashed n Nnety-nne; but Captan Bgelow's glossary has been kndly placed at the dsposal of THE TECH'S subscrbers, and any hazness may hence be easly removed.

22 T-.,E R TETH All of whch leads naturally enough to -a consderaton of the personneloftechnology's famous Sybartc retreat, of the new crop of luhch-room grls whch have ths year been specally mported. The Lounger sees n ths crcumstance, snce t ndcates the departure of last year's fgurantes, only the clear loss of much conscentous effort. t s gven to but few to realze the tme and care necessary to properly educate a denzen of our subterranean restaurant. To so order thngs that the eager servtor wll recognze one's face from afar, and hasten to set forth for hs especal delectaton the chocest vntages of the larder, s, forsooth, a work of patence and eke of "jollyng" truly monumental. Well does the Lounger recall the doclty and deftness of hs own partcular mad of a year ago, though he hestates to descant at length, lest he mperl the success of the efforts he s puttng forth at the present tme. Whle mournng wth hs wonted sncerty the absence of the departed, he stll contrves to " llume " hs countenance wth one of those wnnng smles whch he trusts have lost none of ther old-tme effcacy.
