All of these factors contrbute to a much below optmum program, whch hampers those students sncerely nterested n such tranng. Therefore, Execomm advses the abolshment of compulsory Reserve Offcers Tranng, and the establshment of a proglram whch s nearer to "MT calber." As of the tme of ths commttee's approval, ths resoluton has gone as far as t can go n the realm of student government. Thle book deals wth revolutonares, "trouble-makers as well as makers," each of whom wrought some sgnfcant change n hs partcular felu durng the last century. Among Untermeyer's more obvous choces were Darwn, Pasteur, Staln, Htler and Roosevelt. Sgmund Freud, whose hundredth brthday has just past, was also mentoned: "He started a whole new vocabulary, a whole new lterature... ' Entered as second class matter at the post offce at Boston, M{assachusetts EDTORALS Reason For Falure Vtal to the success of any educatonal program s the ablty of ts teachers---yet all too often nstructors on the college level have nether the nterest n teachng nor the ablty to present and explan materal whch can determne the success or falure of educaton. Ths problem s perhaps most crucal n a rgorous and demandng techncal educaton. The freshman year s often one of dsappontment and dslluson as the enterng student comes nto contact wth nsttute nstructors for the frst tme. Accustomed to secondary school nstructon-where teachng s a professon not a sdelne-he fnds t dffcult to learn from men who are scentsts and engneers frst and nstructors often only a poor second. Closely related to the teachng problem s the falure of the regstraton offcer system. deally a faculty advser, the regstraton offcer often has nether the tme, the nterest or the nclnaton to be of real servce to hs charges. Unabe to turn to the faculty advser for help, the student becomes resentful of the mpersonalty of the system, loses some of hs desre to learn. t s dffcult to blame the regstraton offcer-n many cases, he s forced to assume an added responsblty whch he nether wants nor s able to perform. Wthout Honor Not unaware of these problems, the great majorty of the faculty s contnually strvng to remedy the stuaton. They are, however, faced wth a serous obstacle. Each member of the faculty has, of course, only a lmted amount of tme; and any tme spent as a regstraton offcer, a faculty resdent or n nstructng takes away from the tme they have for research and study. The crux of the problem s that promotons are too often based solely upon research, too often upon the number of techncal papers publshed. nterest n students and tme spent n helpng them s only a mlestone that holds them back from deserved promoton. Any college must attempt to gather as ts faculty the outstandng men n ts feld, t must make ts contrbutons n research-but t must not gnore ts equally mportant oblgaton to ts students. n selectng faculty and makng promotons t must consder nterest n the welfare of ts students. evory tower Tech Who s enved by the freshmen, regarded wth vcarous antcpaton by the junors, and caressed wth a predatory eye by personnel managers? The Senor, of course! t's a delghtful sensaton to be a senor. The heady wne of plannng pours foamng nto the receptve goblet of the future. Quzzes loom less forbddng, deadlnes lose ther productve terror. Mount Everest les below one's feet and the world looks good. One even acqures a tnge of the golden and tender glow that the alumn feels for alma 'mater; the memory of the past wounds n the academa battle recedes nto the forgetful past. Of course, every slver lnng has ts cloud. One task remans and casts a threatenng shadow on the senor's sunny countenance: the Thess. Suddenly, the senor s unceremonously pushed out of the well trodden path of the currculum, and asked to be creatve and orgnal. A lttle cng on the scentfc cake: an dea, a devce, a desgn-maybe of small mportance but stll charged wth all the mystque of creaton. The tradtonal way of dealng wth a thess s to postpone t. There are many hallowed formulas to accomplsh ths: "... 'm too busy now... 'll worry about t later.. 'll knock t off durng Chrstmas vacaton... 'll knock t off durng Easter vacaton... 'm gettng pancky... 'll start on t next week... " Suddenly the end of the term s n sght, and the senor sts many a day and many a nght, beng creatve as hell just before the bell. But that's the way t goes. The Outsde World Then there s the wonderful feelng of beng wanted. Maybe not by the world at large, but certanly by ndustry. They come from all over the country, the smlng personnel men, lke the slave merchants of old, to look over and apprase the merchandse. There are ntervews every week, and the senor reluctantly shakes off the habts of four years, and shaves and puts on a te and a jacket and hs best Dale Carnege manner. The personnel men smle, and talk locatons. promotons, salares, opportunty, gltterng round fgures. Later, over coffee, the senors st around and dsplay fgures lke precous trophes: " have an offer for $ he offered me rght n Calforna, man!" Senor tme s also a tme of occasonal soul searchng and serous thought. What has one accomplshed n college? Was t worth all the effort and work and good tmes foregone and postponed? What has one really gotten out of the Tech experence? The questons and the answers vary wth each ndvdual, yet a few generalzatons stand out. To ths senor, the most mportant and lastng effect of the nsttute l]es not n the formal and academc knowledge and tranng acqured. Of course ths part of our educaton s sgnfcant, t prepares us for our future career and studes, and gves us the tools wth whch to work and create and leave our mark upon the world. But the most mportant product of our educaton les elsewhere, t s ntangble, often below the surface of conscousness, and we wll become aware of t not untl much later n lfe. t conssts of two parts, we shall call them method and character. What do we mean by method? We mean that our method of approachng the world has 'undergone a change. The systematc, logcal and dscplned approach to the problems of matter and mnd cannot fal to leave a deep and lastng mark on the student. Ths analytcal atttude transcends the soluton of techncal or engneerng problems. t becomes appled to any other feld or problem we have to face, be t poltcal, socal, human or other. We have learned not to approach a problem erratcally or emotonally. The mnd has been traned to perform that methodcal jump towards ntal perspectve, and take a good look at the problem. What are the defntons? What are the questons nvolved? What are the emprcal consderatons? s there proof for the assertons nvolved? s the proof vald and logcal? Thus, our whole thought process has become reorganzed and reorented. Ths s of tremendous mportance n our world of today. So many ssues are beclouded, so many men act on mpulse and passon, so much truth s bured under dalectcal covers. Our tranng and method wll be an nvaluable asset n such a world. We must have and use that tool' of reason, for t s stll man's best hope for a peaceful, happy and ratonal future. A New Begnnng What do we mean by character? Many of us have come here straght from the comfortng apron strngs of mom, and also from the sweet and relaxed arms of the average hgh-school wth ts lack of demands upon the mnd, ts mental spoon feedng and ts falure to develop decent workng habts. For those of us, Tech has been a perod of brutal weanng. Suddenly we were on our own. No parents to comfort us. No solctous school-marm bent over our shoulders and cajolng homework out of her lttle darlngs. nstead, the heavy mantle of responsblty was upon us, and there s only one way to bear t, and that s self dscplne and character. Somehow the student learns to forego amusements f necessary, to open a book out of hs own free wll, to realze that hs future s up to hm. f old Kplng were stll around, he mght have added a few lnes to hs famous ' " poem: F you have learned to master your wll F you have suffered through physcs F you have conquered chemstry F you have survved the Boston weather F you have endured commons meals F you have ressted the pressures F you have met and defeated the exams F you have stumbled through sleepless nghts F you have lcked frustraton and blues F you have nourshed the bursar AND... wrtten a thess THEN you wll be Tech-man THEN you wll be a Man, my son. And so the tme has come to part. The author of ths column regretfully puts down hs three favorte tools: the camera, the barb, the flower. The camera: to record the many facets of the Tech scene, The barb: to crtcze, because crtcsm s the leaven of socety. The flower: to prase the praseworthy. t has been fun wrtng t, and we hope some of you lked readng t.
