The dscusson, brought about by the tragc case of the late Tom Clark, lasted for three hours and nvolved frank dsclosures of general "hell.-week" methods used by the varous fraterntes. The comprehensve dsclosures, heretofore held secret for the most part, were made n order to facltate a rapd decson by the nter-fraternty Councl as to whether or not any restrctons should be placed on fraternty hazng. CAMBRDGE, MASSACHUSE'TTS, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1956 ""' " ' ". :' ` ' `) -- '"- r. _ rs cfcally those ponts of hell week where physcal or emotonal breakdowns were nvolved. The man ssue brought up was the phlosophy behnd and the danger nvolved n rdes off campus. Ranked by the presdents as the underlyng reason behnd most of the danger nvolved n nformal ntaton proceedngs was the extreme lack of sleep entaled by these proceedngs and the dmnshed powers of judgment whch result. Another pont mentoned as beng possbly made dangerous by lack of sleep was emotonal stress brought on by certan methods used n some hell weeks. Charman Luhrman brought out the problem as beng "where the lne s to be drawn between excessve and non-excessve emotonal stress, n that the excessve stress leads to a breakdown n judgment as exhbted by the Clark case." t was also brought out n the meetng that all but two of the fraterntes on campus have ther pledges do work.wthn the house durng spare tme, whle eght augment ths program wth strctly supervsed work outsde of the house n the feld of socal welfare. The dscovery of the body by volunteer frogmen culmnated an ntensve sx-day search. Clark was frst mssed Frday mornng when he faled to return to the fraternty house after havng been dropped off on a lonely Lncoln r oad near the reservor Thursday nght wth nstructons to return to the house by 8:00 the next mornng. W\Then hs contnued falure to return became suspcous, offcals of the fraternty notfed hs parents, and the followng mornng Dean of Students E. Francs Bowdtch and the Cambrdge authortes were also nformed. The search started off on a small, routne scale wth Sergeants Norton and Markn of the Cambrdge Polce Department n charge. Sunday the search was put n the hands of Leutenant Granger of the same department and by Monday mornng fve polce departments were on the case, ncludng squads from Cambrdge, Waltham, and Lncoln, along wth the Metropoltan and State polce. The only clue uncovered by Monday evenng by whch tme hs father had arrved from llnos, was the fact that Clark had approached a Lncoln couple at ther home Thursday nght, but snce he was lmted by fraternty rules as to how much nformaton he could gve, the couple was suspcous and turned hm down. At ths pont, several theores exlanng Clark's dsappearance were prevalent, among whch the most promnent were that he may have passed out n a feld near the pont where he was dropped off, that he may have vsted an alng sster n the Mdwest, and that he may have drlowned n the nearby reservor. Gradually the last of these became the most feasble, as the flrst was proved mprobable by ntensve "human-chan" searches of all the surroundng felds and marshes by polce and fremen along wth volunteers from the nsttute, and the second was ruled out by a routne check. At ts peak, the feld search ncluded three lght planes, two helcopters, and an estmated total of 500 searchers. As the drownng theory became ncreasngly promnent, the search became concentrated on the reservor tself, and several boats along wth another helcopter were called n. The frst bg break came Thursday afternoon, as a patch of relatvely newly formed ce was spotted from a hoverng helcopter, and soon afterwards a scarf and shoe, later dentfed as Clark's, were found near the hole. The polce proceeded wth draggng onelatons mmedately, and after nothng was found by nghtfall, volunteer frogmen were called n to start work wth underwater searchlghts the followng mornng. The search was resumed Frday mornngas the seven-man crew of frogmen worked n shfts. Fnally, at 2:50 p.m., the body was recovered and the worst fears of all concerned -were tragcally confrmed. Clark's father, who earler n the week had commented btterly concernng fraternty hazng methods, but who after the fndng of the body was termed "understandng" by nsttute Presdent James R. Klla-, flew to llnos wth hs son's body Saturday mornng. Technq emanagngb oardname d Warburton New General Manager Ralph J. WALKER MEMORAL GYMNASUM, 2:00 and 7:00 pm several tmes. We entered the Beacon Hll Theatre a few evenngs ago prepared to wtness an event comparable to an atom bomb test. We were warned well n advance of our ascent up the famous old hll that no one would be admtted to the. theatre after the man feature had begun. Moreover, we were greeted by a theatre employee who handed us a rather legal-lookng document n the form of a pledge promsng not to reveal the endng of Henr-Georges Clouzot's "Dabolque." Beng a poor secret-keeper from way back, we were frankly rather frghtened by the prospect of sgnng the pledge and subsequently keepng mum. Fully expectng the ushers to be armed wth bayonets, we were somewhat cornforted by ther handsome faces and shny tuxedos. We emerged from the theatre two hours later, a bt shaken and frmly resolved to steer clear of bathtubs and wcker baskets untl our jangled nerves settled down to ther normal state agan. Our bathtub-phoba, orgnated early n the flm when both the wfe and mstress of Mchel Delasalle, a handsome but terrbly'brutal romeo, decde to team up and do away wth the vllan by drownng hm n the famly bathtub. Now t s a well-known fact that Frenchmen, too, take baths occasonally. Thus they couldn't leave the remans of the deceased there ndefntely, fully dressed and n pretty ghastly shape at that. So our lady frends smply hauled hm off n an overszed wcker basket that just happened to be lyng around the house. (Ths s the source of our temporary averson towards wck-er baskets.) The old boy's carcass was eventually deposted n a nearby swmmng pool. And then the trouble begns. 'What goes on after the late lover'ps submerson n the pool makes the precedng events look lke fun and games. There s a progresson of werd happenngs wth a tnge of the supernatural cleverly desgned to make one look under one's bed for nghts to come. Although the plot calls for no extraordnary dramatc ablty, the character portrayals are effectve. Paul Meursse s adequately spteful n the role of Mchel Delasalle, former tenns champon -who apparently found sex a much more engagng enterprse. Hs coarse mstress, Ncole Horner, who orgnates the plan to dspose of the man around the house, s played by Smeone Sgnoret. Perhaps the best performance s by Vera Clouzot n her role of Chrstna. Delasalle, Mchel's fral but fathful wfe who plays murderess only wth the encouragement of Mstress Ncole. The Delasalles own a boardng school at whch most of fthe acton takes place. n contrast to the usual cnema verson of a boardng school at whch the chldren run roughshod over the arassed faculty, the antcs of these schoolboys are ndeed mld when compared wth ther teachers' shenangans. All these gongs-on do reach a clmax, but, beng good scout, we'll say no more. For we don't want to commt the double sn of breakng our pledge and losng the prce of your admsson for the Beacon Hll Theatre. -by Fred Epsten '57 Julard Strng Quartet The Jullard Strng Quartet presented the thrd n the MT Humantes Seres of concerts last Sunday afternoon n Kresge. The quartet s made up of four members of the ensemble faculty of the Jullard School of Musc. Robert Mann and Robert Koff, the volnsts, both performed wth a deft touch and precse clarty. Raphael Hllyet handled the vola well, lendng a sold support 'Lo the ensemble. and performng well n the few outstandng opportuntes that the vola parts offered. The 'cello was played by Claus Adam; although Mr. Adam had a tendency towards roughness n the lower regster when playng rapdly and loudly, hs patterned bass parts were fne and hs pzzcato notes 'well done. As a unt, the quartet was very well ntegrated, dsplayng a fne sense of tmng and complete mutual understandng of the works they performed. The program began wth Mozart's "Dssonant" Qu~artet. standng room only "Kng of Hearts" by Jean Kerr and Eleanor Brooke Drected by Thomas Roach Produced by the Tuffs Communty Players Tuffs Arena Theatre, Medford, through February 25 t s all too often the case wth many of us that our playgong habts defeat themselves. Wth the hgh prce of tckets, and perennally low level of funds, most college students are restrcted to a very few of the bg Boston shows n the couarse of a season. We try to pck those whch have had good revews, whose story appeals to -us, and to whch we can get tckets! But gong to the theatre can be fun even f "Mssrs. Lee and J. J. Shubert'. do not head the programwthn easy dstance are some of the very best amateur groups n the country, presentng ther work -wth a verve that would do credt to many a supposedly "pre-broadway" show. My case n pont s "Kng of Hearts", now n ts second week at Tufts. Orgnally a Broadway show of two seasons past, t s a lghthearted, blatantly theatrcal comedy about a cartoonst and hs secretary-fancee. Larry Larkn, whose sudden acceptance by the "ntellectual" publc gves hm an amazng resemblance to the real-lfe Walt Kelly, has sacrfced hmself to brngng -wholesome, soul-cleansng wt and humor to hs publc. As becomes rather evdent, hs cartoons, whose smplcty brought them nto ntellectual promnence, are now so ntellectual that the kds have qut readng them. The net effecf of ths overly-wse gentleman.s to motvate n hs secretary, hs "ghost-wrter" and all about hm emotons rangng from adoraton to obscenty, and brng off n grand style a tongue-n-cheek tale of romance among the "newly ntellgent." For many and vared reasons, amateurs more often attempt plays that wll be wthn ther capactes than certan professonals. Fortunately, ndeed, for the audence s thea treated to a well-understood, hghly polshed producton,, complete wthn tselfwth few amends necessary n regard the personaltes starrng n the show. Unlke the Broadway aplay whch succeeds because of ts stars or ts plot, the good amateur producton must stand on ts own feet, provdng entertanment on ts own merts. The Tufts Communty Playrspro b o bl e of the -os actv of our_ local amsteur groups, has certanly conformed to these crtera n "Kng of Hearts." Handlng hs role of the neurotc and exhuberant Tarry, Rchard Lndsey pulled out of the hat a well-rounded character, wth so many twsts and complexes that he s a vertable "psychatrc manual" n hmself. As Larry's dolzng secretary, Judth Labrack gves the femnne love nterest a warm look and ntrgung smle, although a. bt too physcally strong character, whle Sol Schwade, who appeared n last sprng's Dramashop producton of "The Kng and The Duke," plays Larry's frustrated publsher wth all the satrcal wt at hs command, and brngs a brllantly lghted curmudgeon nto every scene. Robert Lebacher, as Larry's ".ghost-wrter", does hs young man wth flatness substtuted for sarcastc btterness durng most of the play, but stll manages to come through for a slam-bang endng. Add to ths a fne young actor named Russell Savage as Larry's '"latest project" n chld development, and you have' a ncely-tuned farce Afull of warm fun and laughter. -AMchael H~all '57 Varsty Wrestlbng Team.
