1 - 'C"B~ Cm Fals n Attempt M T Student Pacfst Released An MT sophomore was arrested by a Federal marshall on November 22 for symbolcally attemptng to prevent the launchng of a Polars submarne. Donald P. Martn and nne other members of the "Commttee for Nonvolent Acton" went to New London, Connectcut, to protest the launchng of the submarne Ethan Allan, the largest mssle carryng submarne yet launched by the Unted States. Eght of the group went out n dnghes to protest the launchng, whle Martn and one other member swam out nto the Thames Rver and succeeded n boardng the submarne. Though ther symbolc attempt at preventng the launchng "had obvously faled" (the submarne was launched) the members do not feel that ths detracted from the effectveness of ther demonstraton. Accordng to Martn, the man purpose of ths protest was to gan publcty for and str up natonal nterest n ther crusade for unlateral dsarmament. The group had staged about ten prevous demonstratons of launchngs n the precedng months, and the prevous polcy of the Navy Department had been not to arrest the protesters. They were, however, accordng to Martn, "always ready to accept the consequences" and ths tme they dd. The members, nne boys and one grl, were taken to court n New Haven and later mprsoned. On Thanksgvng Eve several boys decded to stage a hunger strke n protest aganst the bal system. Martn stated that on Thursday, Thanksgvng Day, they went to the prson dnng hall, but gave ther food away to other prsoners. Later, they refused to go to the dnng hall. Martn also staged a water strke and after seven days wthout food and fve wthout water hs poor physcal condton resulted n hs beng taken to the Danbury Federal nsttute and fed ntravenously. Under parental urgng he then accepted bal. Martn returned to MT classes on December 2. When asked about hs future plans, Martn, a math major, stated that he "ddn't know" as he mght be n jal. He also stated that f put on probaton or suspended sentence, he would "defntely not co-operate." The Techmen had prevously upset hghly-rated Trnty Saturday nght and lost n the opener to Bates The Trnty game was one of the most exctng seen on the home court n a long tme. The drvng and shootng of Chuck Gamble '62 and the reboundng of Dave Koch '62,gave the Engneers a lead wth about nne mnutes gone n the frst half. Gamble had nne of those ponts. Green '23, Earth Scence Buldng benefactor, s shown wth hs classmate and MT Presdent "Jay" Stratton as they broke ground for the new center wth a two-handled spade Monday afternoon on the West Court (MT's "West Court" s drectly east of the man nsttute buldngs). Fund and wll house most of the teachng and research done here n the earth scences. Expected to be completed n 1962, the Center s the result of a $6 mllon gft from Mr. and Mrs. Green. Mr. Green s an alumnus of the MT class of 1923, who s servng as a Specal Term Member of the MT Corporaton. The buldng was desgned by. M. Pe '39, of. M. Pe and Assocates. Bd nvtatons for constructon are to be ssued before the end of the year and foundaton work s to be started n early Student Expelled For Forgng Stcker An undentfed MT student was expelled from school last week for forgng a parkng stcker. Enterng nto ths decson was the student's questonable past record at MT. The judgment of the Faculty Commttee on Dscplne was that the student dsplayed a total lack of ethcal standards, and that he should be expelled at once and not readmtted. Recommendaton of no readmsson s qute rare, and s ndcatve of the Commttee's strong feelng that "forgng a parkng stcker s just as serous as any other form of cheatng, for whch smlar dscplne has prevaled." Structure Houses Dverse Facltes n September, 1962, the teachng and research facltes of MT wll be greatly augmented n the felds of geology, geophyscs, geochemstry, oceanography, and meteorology when the Center for Earth Scences s completed. Unque Desgn Uses No nsde Columns The new buldng wll be notable not only for ts academc facltes but, also, for ts unque desgn. The structure wll have no walls n the conventonal sense; nstead, the 20-story, 325-foot hgh buldng wll have an exteror of renforced structural concrete wth no vertcal columns or supports nsde. Snce there are no ntermedate columns, four heavy end columns wll support the entre structure. Star, elevator, and mechancal shafts wll be n the ends of the buldng allowng great flexlbty n nteror plannng. Probably the most dstnctve structural feature of the buldng wll be ts oval wndows, whch wll be shaped to conform to the stress patterns encountered n ts exteror. The floor structure conssts of prestressed concrete josts, 47 feet long and fve feet on center, restng on floor hgh Verendel trusses, whose webs are hollowed out by the wndows. The trusses transmt ther loads to the four corner supports and the whole s braced aganst the wnd by the end walls. Except for the entrance lobbes, the ground floor s completely open wth land coverage kept to a mnmum. Cast Concrete Exteror The exteror wll be cast archtectural concrete whch wll be lghtly sand-blasted to expose some of the stone aggregate. Snce most of the present buldngs are stone, the Center wll be harmonous wth the rest of the campus. nsde, 19 of the 20 floors wll be utlzed for academc work. On the frst floor above ground level a lecture hall seatng 250 persons, smlar to the audtorum n Compton Buldng, wll be located. The second floor wll be entrely for class work. There wll be three large classrooms, three semnar rooms and a student lounge. n addton to elevators, t wll be reached from the ground by two starways. Three teachng laboratores for the Department of Geology and Geophyscs wll take up two-thrds of the thrd floor. The remanng area wll be for the storage of the department's rock samples and ores. Laboratores for research and teachng n the felds of Paleontology and n Structural and Hstorcal Geology wll comprse the fourth floor. Expermental Labs Hgh pressure expermentaton work on the phase changes n mnerals wll be done n the laboratory to be located on the ffth floor. The Geology machne shop and faculty offces wll also be there. The sxth floor wll hold a teachng laboratory, research facltes, and faculty offces for Geology. The Crystallography Laboratory and the Cabot Spectrographc Laboratory wll be on the seventh and eghth floors, respectvely. Varous laboratores ncludng the mass spectroscopy room wll be stuated on the nnth floor. Wth room for 30,000 volumes, the Lndgren Lbrary wll serve the entre Center. Located on the eleventh floor, t wll also contan the Schwarz map room. Meteorology Studed The fourteenth floor wll be partally concerned wth chemcal oceanography, the remander wth meteorology, whch wll also be the subject under study flrom the ffteenth through the nneteenth floors. The Headquarters for the Department of Geology and Geophyscs and the Headquarters for the Department of Meteorology wll be located on the tenth and sxteenth floors, respectvely. Ar-condtonng and elevator equpment wll be housed on the twenteth floor as well as radar transmtters. 4 s L s L L C wth -O 0- to Resolved... The ntramural Councl was wse n lettng U the measure concernng ntramural and varsty a athletes de for lack of a two-thrds majorty. As we have sad before n these columns, the removal L of all varsty athletes from ntramural athletcs, even wth permsson of the coaches allowed as an excepton, s too bg a step, and one that has mplcatons far beyond the ntent of the orgnal ( proposers. t s our feelng that coaches of ntercollegate teams both can and should nform ther players - what ntramurals they may or may not partcpate n. And they should feel free to drop from ther squads men who break ths rule, just as they would, we are sure, feel free to drop a man who broke tranng n some other way. We would lke to add that t was most dsturbng to us to hear that one of the prncpal arguments advanced n favor of the measure n queston was that t "protects the varsty athletes from hs house (or dorm), whch would otherwse pressure hm nto playng". What sort of a sprt s ths, whch prompts fraterntes and others to pressure ther varsty athletes nto what s substantally an nfracton of tranng rules? Ths s unfar to both the man and to hs varsty team. We fal to see why, especally n the fraterntes, where brotherhood gets a hgh emphass, ndvdual men should be sngled out for the dsfavor of the group f they fal to partcpate, when they have a good reason. Moralty at M.T. KBTZER Ths problem should be attacked at ts heart by the fraterntes and dorms themselves, however, not by throwng up a barrcade of legslaton to "protect" ndvduals. To gve substance to ths, t would be our recommendaton that the ntramural Councl pass the followng resoluton: "Resolved, that strct adherence to tranng rules s of the utmost mportance to varsty athletes, and that ntramural competton should not be regarded by ether the athletes or ther houses as proper justfcaton for breakng of tranng rules." We would hope that such a resoluton, once passed by the M Councl, would be submtted to the varous dormtores and fraterntes for ther approval or dsapproval. Let those who would pressure ther men to break tranng rules stand up and be counted. The ntramural Councl dd well n not passng the moton before t last Tuesday nght, and n openng the meetng to all for dscusson. MT s the better for t. The Athletc Assocaton can mprove on ths good performance by recognzng the ntent of these who orgnally proposed the measure, and passng the resoluton above. t wll clearly defne the stuaton wthout puttng any basc lmtatons on the tradtonal freedom MT students have always held n the realm of athletcs and extracurrcular actvtes. (Author of " Was a Teen-age Dwarf', "The Many Lores of Dobe Glls", etc.) - C ' --~- ~' ~ - u 8-M 'TS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY f you have been readng ths column-and hope you have; mean genunely and sncerely hope so; mean t does not proft me one farthng whether you read ths column or not; mean am pad every week by the makers of Marlboro and my stpend s not altered n any partcular by the number of people who read or fal to read ths column-an act of generosty totally typcal, you would say, f you knew the makers of Marlboro as know the makers of Marlboro; mean here are tobacconsts gray at the temples and full of honors who approach ther art as ngenuously, as eagerly, as trustngly as the youngest and most nnocent of practtoners; mean the purpose of the Marlboro makers s smply to put the best of all possble flters behnd the best of all possble tobaccos and then go, head hgh, nto the market place wth ther product, confdent that the nborn sense of rght and wrong, of good and bad, of shoddy and mertorous, whch s the brthrght of every Amercan, wll result n a modest return to themselves for ther long hours and dedcated labors-not, let me hasten to add, that money s of prme consderaton to the makers of Marlboro; all these smple men requre s plan, nourshng food, plenty of Marlboros, and the knowledge they have scattered a bt of sunshne nto the lves of smokers everywhere; f, say, you have been readng ths column, you may remember that last week we started a dscusson of what to gve our frends for Chrstmas. Some people wll be surprsed to hear that a student not only can be, but has been, permanently expelled from MT for forgng a parkng stcker.. t s sgnfcant that the student concerned had a "questonable" past record, and that hs behavor before the Dscplne Commttee dd not convnce that body that he recognzed any moral or ethcal error n hs conduct. We feel that ths factor probably weghed heaver than any other n the Commttee's collectve mnd. Somethng that s often not realzed untl too late by MT students s that the school's admnstraton s rather senstve on such "moral" ssues as possesson of a master key, or of an llegally obtaned parkng stcker. MT, t may be safely sad, s no longer an nsttuton solely for the study of scence and engneerng. t s ganng ncreasngly the character of a modern unversty; mplct n ths s a concern - and a responsblty - for student welfare and behavor. The lesson s clear: one cannot go on "free-wheelng" forever at MT. Such non-larcenous acts as usng the parkng lots under false pretenses, happen to be punshable just as severely as would be stealng lab equpment - partcularly when the atttude of the man nvolved betrays a lack of concern wth the ethcs of the stuaton. Many declarers understandably played dummy's J on the frst trck, whch was covered by the Q and won wth the A. One msguded South then attempted to brng n dummy's club sut wth a fnesse of the Q. East won the club K and returned the J, drvng out dummy's A. Dummy's damond J was won by East, who cashed two clubs and exted wth a heart. South fnessed the 9 and lost to West's 10. West then returned a heart and later got the lead wth the spade A to cash 2 more heart trcks for a 3 trck set. Another declarer was able to make the hand n spte of a msguess on the frst trck. Realzng the danger of the enemy heart sut, he promptly led spades to drve out the entry of the dangerous opponent. Fortunately West held the spade A and East the damond A, not vce versa. When West won the second round of spades, he had the opportunty to set the contract by leadng hs sngleton club, but nstead he returned a heart to declarer's 9. t was then a smple matter for declarer to drve out the damond A and establsh 2 damonds, 3 spades, 3 hearts, and a club for 9 trcks and the contract. - Elwyn R. "Watng For Godot" s too complex to be as meanngless as ths producton would ndcate.. When stagng a play, a drector has the opportunty to promulgate hs own deas by vvfyng those ponts n the play that he lkes and de-emphaszng those that he dsagrees wth. Mchael Murray s a capable drector; hs facle use of the Charles' theatren-the round stage wthout blockng anyone's vew ndcates ths. Unfortunately, ether he dsagrees wth Samuel Beckett entrely, or he dd not understand the play, because the ntellectual content s completely de-emphaszed. ntellectually, ths play, a tragcomedy accordng to Reckett, shows the absurdty of modern man's search for salvaton. Two tramps, Gogo and Dd, st by the sde of a road watng :for Godot (God), who wll, they hope, save them, although they are not sure exactly what from. Gogo and Dd do not realze that they, symbolc of the dual sensual and ntellectual nature of man, have t wthn themselves to be saved, as nterchangng the syllables of ther names ndcates. Nothng happens, except for an encounter wth Pozzo and hs haltered servant Lucky, agan symbolc of the dual nature of man. Lucky s ted to Pozzo and does hs bddng whle leadng hm because, to Beckett, ths s the relatonshp of the ntellect to the senses. Lucky's speech-thoughtdream s an ndcaton of the nablty of the ntellect to cope wth the problems of God and death. Pozzo and Lucky are lost, n all senses of the word, n the second act because they tred to fnd somethng. Gogo and Dd are not saved, but at least, by nacton they manage to be no worse off than before. The boy, possbly the Chrst chld, who comes to tell them that Godot s not comng, but may come tomorrow, s as elusve as Godot because he too s a fgment of ther magnatons and a projecton of themselves. n several places, n ths producton, Beckett's stage drectons are gnored.
