Dck Sampson '59, ex-presdent of FC, and Jerry Stephenson '59, former UAP, brought up the problem of ncreased tuton at MT, urgrng that nscomnn at least express an "awvareness of the stuaton." Sampson felt that "the trend towvards hgher tuton was unfortunate for hgher educaton n general, and especally so for MT." He also stated that: "Students, who are especally famlar wth the reacton created by hgh tuton, should express ther opnons on the subject."' The nscomn-1 sesson brought out the followng facts: Hgh tuton dscout'ages those students n the lower ncome brackets fronm even consdern- 1T serously enough to dscover the excellent system of ad offered. "No matter how good _MT scholtrshps are, MT must have the chance to offer them," sad Sampson. From left to rght: the old and the new. PR/es ;, azrz 'was magnatvely presented at Northeastern Unversty's Alumrn Hall on Huntngton Avenue by the Unversty's Jazz Socety. The jazz players performed before a vd-hte movc screen, the upper half of whch was llumnated by an attractve bank of red, blue, and purple lghtng; the scene looked, as n a Hollywood dream representaton, as f everythng n a room wnhere jazz s made, except the nstrumlents and the muscans, had vanshed. Only Haxvkns' poston, too far forward on the stagle, and too nuch removed from hs accompanmnet, for my taste, spoled the lluson. Hawvkns' colleagues, the young, well-groomed Paul Naves Tro--Paul Neves on pano, John Neves on bass, and Alan Dawson on drumns-whch appears nghtly, \W ednesdav throug1h Saturday, at a charmn g club at fortyseven Mount Auburn Street n Harvard Square, provded excellent backng. Paul contrbuted paradoxcally cluttered an-d unfed solos; Joht', a Shearng and Pomeroy alumnus, lad a frm rhythmc foundaton for the group and furnshed a drv\ng, thunl-ng solo, the notes alternately hhll and low, bouncng up and dowvn lke a rubber ball; Alan Dawson, wonderfully addcted to "droppng bombs" (slppng n heavy accents on the bass drum, or when wth brushes, on the cynmbals), swvungl wth an effortless, polshed propulson. o Revew The Sprng season has started and mght say t started very well: the "Charles Playhouse" s gvng us a wonderful performance of "The Crucble" and the Repertory Boston, nc. s presentng a splendd verson of Lug Prandello's "Sx Characters n Search of an Author". To queston exstence, lfe, to doubt realty, to assert lluson as past and fact as an occasonal present s the favourte theme of Prandello and Very seldom wll ths theme be absent from hs plays. "Sx characters" deals wth ths subject n a masterful fashon: t s set n a theatre, on a bare stage, where the two factons, make-belef and true characters, are opposed, explaned, lad down, and descrbed. There are no acts n the strct sense of the word, nor' specal sets or costumes: two nterruptons, for "coffee-break" and because of an error of the stage-hand, two small sets brought n by unon workers whle the acton goes on, and dark dresses for the sx characters, are the only techncal aspects of ths play wthn a play. f readng the play turned out to be very borng for me, ts producton by the Repertory company s certanly not so. The drecton by Stephen Aaron s energetc, Xvvacous, magnatve, wth a specal menton to the blockng and nterpretaton. Rather than play t straght and phlosophze for hours, Stephen Aaron blended t wth a satre of the theatre, as well as delghtful bts of comedy nserted n the mdst of the heavrt tragedy n whch the characters are nvolved. Suspense s bult from nothng, tenson s created from a smple story, and the spectator s played wth, n a powerful jugglng and pushng-around of sentments. Dean Gtter as the Drector gves us an extremely funny performance, and the scene where he "'showes" the actors of hs company how to nterpret the drama, just lved by the characters, s a brllant parody of theatrcal personaltes, a superb and realstc mtaton of "the people behnd the scenes". Ray Renhardt as the Father s strong, artstc,,ell studed, though a lttle exaggerated at moments; t s however a good perforlnance, certanly worth mentonng. Undoubtedly the wvnner of the whole evenng s Dora Landey as the Stepdaughter. A beautful grl, she s the personfcaton of vce, as the "author" the characters are searchng for w ould have lked her to be. But her talent s not her beauty: she s a very fne actress, wth an astonshng range of sentments and expressons at her dsposal, a careful portrayal of her character, a vgorous presence on stage, and an easness borderng casualty. A grl for the role or the role for the grl, nobody knows. Wendell Clark has one scene, n fact one lne, and t brngs the house down wth laughter. But 'll let t be a surprse, for t's worthwhle. One small comment about Susan Mle), (ngenue): t s very good to have studed dcton, but t s very bad to mpose t on spectators. n all the performances 've seen her gve, her tone and her tmng s the same: a chld separatng and pronouncng all the words, as he learns to read; not only s t embarrassng but annoyng to have an actor say hs lnes n the same tempo, wth the same beat. Susan Mley remnds me of a schoolteacher readng fromn "Mother Goose". 'Sx Characters n Search of an Author" has tprandello's message: "... you too must not count overmuch on your realty as you feel t today, snce, lke that of yesterday, t may prove an lluson for you tomorrow" and the Boston Repertory, nc. carred t well and vgorously, n a show worth seeng more than once for ts good drecton, orgnal settng and careful actng. You have a date wth the Wlbur Theatre next tme you go to a play. To ths end, the Natonal Defense Educaton Act, whch provdes for student loan funds and graduate fellowshps as well as other benefts, should be wvelcomed. n the past year a great number of nsttutons have appled for funds under the Act and MT's.renouncemnent (reported elsewhere n ths newspaper ) that t s one of these nsttutons comes as no N Urpr/se. There has, howe~er, been consd]erable resentmnent anrmsed by an obscure rder, tacked onto the bll on the 'Senlate floor', wvhch provdles that ndvduals recevng fuul~ds under the Act must take a loyalty oath. The ndvduals n the graduate.l',thools of poltcal scence and cty plannng who would hatve to take the oath, should they be lucky enough to roe/rle the fellowshps, may feel no quahns about dong.s,~. But there are certanly others who wvould be unwllng to take the oath and these others are far more lkely to be loyal Amnercans w,\ho consder the oath an nfrngenent on ther rg-hts than to be subversve nd/vduals. TFhe outr/ght Commnunst, as Senator John F. Kennedy has ponted' out, would not hestate to perjure hmself. When Dr. Stratton begns hs "nft~mnal" tak- wth students n Kresge he wll be settng a precedent for our days at the nsttute; one whch we hope w/1 be carr/ed on and utlzed to ts fullest value n tao future. T-he Presdent of the nsttute says he wll express hs personal op/n/ons on many of the problems of the present day technologcal educaton. Undoubtedly these personal /ews w/ll to a great extent, express the general polces and thoughts of the admntraton. For many who have been askng "Why am here?", there wll probably be an answer. For those who are convnced they are n the rght place there wll perhaps come a better understandng of what MT stands for now and what place t wll take n the future of the academc world. on the Red front On the afternoon of Aprl 11 Dr. Frederck Schwarz of Sdney, Australa spoke on the subject of The Threat of World Communsm before an audence of about 200 students and faculty crammed nto room Hs rather startlng thess was that at the present trend the Unted States wll surrender to Communst forces about the year After presentng ths he moved to some advce as to what we can do n an attempt to reverse ths dsastrous trend n world affars. Dr. Schwarz was educated at The Unversty of Queensland where he receved degrees n scence, arts and Doctor of Medcne and Surgery. Lecturng n mathematcs and scence at the Queensland Teachers College and medcal practce have have been hs profess'onal nterests. Relgously he s an evangelcal Baptst, and t was 'through ths that he became nterested n the Communst move toward w'orld enslavement. Well read n the basc Cornmunst wvrtngs and verbally sharpened by debates wth top Anglo-Saxon Communsts, he s well qualfed to lecture on the topc. He s a consultant of the House Un- Armercan Actvtes Commttee. Dr. Schwarz' lecture frst showed how we are losng on the fronts of the Mltary, Econonmy, and (most mportant of all),..ommuncatons. The tremendous m~ltary and economc advances of the Communst block are famlar to most of us, but the surprsng fact s the crushng defeat w,%e are sufferng n the communcatons feld. Dr. Schwarz had wth hm many examples of the beautful propaganda lterature of the Red press prnted n all the consequental languages of the world. He cted examples such as the hundreds of Communst agents he has seen at work n ndan vllages spreadng the Red le. There s no nformaton from the Free World to cormbat ths onslaught of propaganda n the fertle mnds of people such as these nnocent, but unfortunately gnorant Hndus. Dr. Schwarz beleves that unless ths fantastc flood of Communst propaganda s effectvely countered by truth from the Free World (not electrcty and electrc lghts by whch to read Communst propaganda), we wll lose the very crtcal areas of Southeast Asa and Afrca to the Red tde. Once these are taken Western Europe wll fall by sheer weght of numbers and South and Central Amerca wll follow sut. Ths leaves only North Amerca, whch, bewldered and confused, wll surrender wthout a shot rather than be annhlated. Communst rule n the Unted States wll be accompaned by mass slaughter of all those who do not conform to ther rules for slavery just as t occurred n the Ukrane, North Korea, and Hungary. All ths by 1973 unless YOU do somethng about t NOW. Dr. Schwarz admts that he does not have all the answers or even a consderable porton of them. He does hope that the Amercan people can be enlghtened to the fact that Communsm s our mortal eremy, not just another dctatorshp to oppose; Amercans must strve wth all ther mental and physcal resources to combat the rver of les comng from Moscow, Pepng, and Warsaw. We must be ready to dedcate our lves to these ends. Sdelne: Dr. Schwarz appeared agan at MT, ths tme by moton pcture, n The Crmson Shadote, whch was shown Tuesday evenng. Watng at the door to room 4-270, where the flmn was shovn, was a small group of students dolng out some rather rratonal verbal and lteral arguments to the effect that Dr. Schwarz s advocatng Ant- Chrstan mnethods and that Russa s nether truly Commun/stc nor bent on world domnaton. Sgnng ther mneographed publcaton were: Pete Catejo '62, Barry Sheppard '60, Gus Horowvtz '62, Dave Vlkomerson '62, Kenny Seymour '60, George Lermer '60, and Arche Thomas '62. These students clam that "Ths (Communst) dctatorshp must be opposed just as every other dctatorshp should be opposed, ncludng Franco, Chang Ka- Chek, Kng Saud, and all the South Amercan dctators." and further that "Russan Communsm can be stopped by havng democracy, by supportng t everywhere t exsts, by lvng t n Amerca." These statements are fast approachng the rdculous. Accordng to the frst we should reject Natonalst Chna, our strongest and most steadfast ally n Southeast Asa. Accordng to the second our democratc lvng and support of world democraces for close to twko centures should check the Red hoard; t stll advances. What we need are Amercans wth a full apprec/aton for the Communst menace and a desre to cornbat t wth full force of word and deed. -PEB Jr. 4/ LA DueHEsSE ANNE A Charmng and nformal Corner of F'rom*e SUMMER GARDEN OPEN RESTAURANT EVERY DAY.
