MARCH By Subscrpton Snow, Sharaf Call For Cooperaton Bowdon Takes Crown In Debate Tournament By Jack Leonard and Mary Kay Rudolph Bowdon College won the annual Mane stale debate tourna- ment n Hathorn Hall Saturday afternoon. Wth a proposton that the Federal Government should enact a compulsory federal far employment practces a w. the men from Brunswck took three out of the four debates they partcpated n. Rates was n second place wth a two-two record, whle Mane placed last, wnnng one and losng three. Hathaway-Taylor Wn The Bates Affrmatve team, consstng of Rchard Hathaway and Blanc Taylor won both of ts debates by unanmous decson-, whle the negatve team, made up of Donald Weathcrbce and Mor- Advsor All Wet As WAAfGals Flp Her Lghtly Thursday evenng's swmmng program at the Auburn YMCA was clmaxed when swm group members tossed Mss Norton, faculty advsor, nto the pool by way of celebraton. A capacty audence watched the frst performance of the new WIAA synchronzed swmmng group. Manager Lorrane Julan opened the program wth acknowledgments to the many people who had made t possble. The dance numbers carred out the "Tempos" theme wth a tango, a waltz, a march, and a square dance. Rpplng Rhythm Usng regular swmmng strokes and modfcatons, the swmmers acheved a rhythmc nterpretaton of the dfferent tempos n the water. Vared lghtng effects combned wth the dark bathng suts and whte raps of the grls to make the showng mpressve. Smple costumng added color and varety to each number. Partcpants n the tango wore shor' red skrts: those n the march had dstnctve red cockades on ther caps: the rest wore streamers or neck bands. Members of the group nclude: lone Brks, Cecela Dckerson, Judcs Doyle, Shrley Hll, Nancy Howe. Joan McGurc, Gal Olsen, Marjore Teran, Jance Dudley, Dolores Klgore, Prsclla Sargent, Kdth-Rllen Greene, Marjore Tarbeck. June Ryan. Alson Brown, Lorrane Julan, Margaret McGall. Lauralyn Watson, Joan Gbson, Ruth Stocknger. ton Brody lost twce, each tme by a 2-1 decson. The Rowdon Affrmatve team, whch ncluded Charles Orcutt and Wllam Hayes, went undefeated, the negatve team Bruc-. - Wald and Paul Brauntus sufferng the only Rowdon defeat of the day wth ts loss to Bates. Three-Fsted Attack Hathaway and Taylor advocated acceptance of the Humphrey- Ivcs bll, whch has alreadv been proposed to the Congress. In the debate wth Mane, Hathaway, the frst speaker, stated that a compulsory law s needed because "unfar dscrmnaton s prevalent today". He argued bs case on three levels moral, nternatonal and economc. He clamed that dscrmnaton robs Amercan ndvduals of ther rghts; t gves Communsm the opportunty for more effectve propaganda: and t costs money. The Mane negatve team proposed mantenance of the status quo. It ponted out that suffcent progress was beng made at ths tme, and that compulson was an undesrable clement. Conclaton Key Taylor felt that compulson was necessary! and n pontng out the advantages of hs plan showed how the southern problem could be solved. He regarded conclaton a- the most mportant aspect of the plan, but beleved that compulson must be a possble alternatve. He advocated strong local jursdcton as a factor n solvng dffcultes n the south because of ts opposton to federal nterference. In hs closng rebuttal. Hathaway stated that the negatve's status (po was the very thng whch had produced the need for a change, and mantaned that the affrmatve plan was the best one. Judges for the tournament were John J. Maloney. Jr., Paul Choate, Arnold Westerburg, Thomas Delehanty, Charles Jordan, Benjamn Herman, George Ramsdell, and Professors Pomcroy and Berkelman Bookstore Notce Anyone who has not pcked up ther books at the Bookstore for ths semester must get them before vacaton. He spoke before the an- nual dnner of the Augusta Junor Chamber of Commerce. "Durng the last two months." sad Dr. Phllps, "a major struggle has been takng place n Washngton. Through of Agrculture Benson, Esenhower announced hs ntenton to modfy the farm >rce support program by movng n the drecton of freer markets. But no sooner had ths announcement been made than many Congressmen and Senators, both Republcans and Democrats, pounced on Benson. Paradox "Interestngly enough, some of rhose who tongue-lashed the n the strongest terms are also proponents of reducng government spendng, although contnuaton of the farm prce support program means ncreasng expendtures." 5 FOUR THE BATES STUDENT, MARCH 18, 1953 Edtorals I What Prce Revoluton? A frend wth bg problems stopped us n the lbrary the other day. We stood n the lobby and talked behnd the glass partton where the routes from the Stanton Room and the Men's Room converge at the bottom of the second-lloor starway. Our frend was very concerned about the Russan problem, and we began dscussng the thng n earnest. But every now and then a couple of coeds would walk n the front door or go to the desk to take out books. In rfc mdst of talkng about a possble cvl war n Russa, our frend's eyes would sort of slde off n the grls' drecton. We found ths a bt dsconcertng. "In a dctatorshp lke Russa," he would be sayng, "I thnk Bera wll eventually take over cute blond at the desk, who s she? no, I really thnk Malenkov doesn't have umml what a fgure, see. the one who just walked n! I just don't thnk he has a chance to stablze nce legs to stablze the rest of her sn't so bad. ether to stablze the government when so many of Staln's muscle-men are after, arc after who n heck s she, anyway? Nope, t's gong to be rough to fll Staln's shoes and I thnk we ought 1<> take a strong hand the one n the sweater, no, over there Yes, you may be rght, Malenkov may be shrewd enough to handle t all anyway boy, she really has t Hell and consecraton! there arc too darn many women around here!" "What?" We rased our eyebrows a bt. "That's the trouble wth Bates College." he sad, pontng toward the bg readng room. "There are just too darn many women. Here the world s. faced wth so many tremendous problems, and we can't even have a serous dscusson wthout all these, these grls." he stabbed an ndex fnger n the drecton of a cute sophomore charmng her way through the readng room, "wthout havng them dstract us from the basc ssues of the world today!" "But..." "Take classes, for nstance." A wsp of har fell across hs forehead as he wagged at us. "The prof s up n front of the class, talkng about Arstotle's C.olden Mean. Are the men lstenng? No! They're glancng out of the corners of ther eyes at some female wth more curves than brans." "Now wat a mn..." "And before you know t these men arc takng the females out at nght. It's terrble. Instead of stayng home and realty learnng somethng from the books, they are dllyng and dallyng wth these wth those," he ponted at a couple of coeds leavng the lbrary, "wth those useless women!" We stared at hm, amazed. "Why. everybody needs to..." "And besdes," he broke n, "t's rdculous the way they wll park n front of a women's dorm n the dead of wnter wth the heater on and the motor runnng just so they won't have to go nto the recepton room. It's a shameful waste of gasolne. And t wears down t^e battery, too!" "What?" we sad. "Ths s fantastc." "Fantastc? Why, the worst thng about ths datng busness s that the men start to go steady, and they end up worryng more about beng n love than about the mportant thngs lke Korea and Russa and the Iranan" ol dspute!" "You're not serous." "I mean t! I say, do away wth the women for humanty's sake!" Our frend took one route, and we look the other. What s the sgnfcance of ths epsode? It has none. Except that the STUDENT feels that even a radcal dea such as ths deserves proper arng n publc. The STUDENT docs feel, however, that our frend's crusade does not deserve too many followers. Stu-C By A Nose' The nterest shown by the men n the Student Councl electons of the past two years has been a very good change from the passve contests of prevous years. Wth.lttle qualfcaton, t can be asserted that ths change marks a recognton of the mportant part a strong Stu-C can play n campus affars f backed by an electorate not the prsoner of cyncsm and do-nothngncss. A share of credt for the change must go to the new and enlghtened petton system for prmary canddates. The electon ths year carred a good thng a lttle too far. A healthy nterest became at tmes rabd partsan warfare. The electon was a real 'race' You mght have thought the Trple Crown of horsedom was at the end of the ranbow, not the presdency of the Stu-C. The Bates campus s too small, and no ssues are bg enough to warrant mud-slngng campagns. Nor do they warrant tactcs of professonal poltcs. Personal campagnng s excellent, but every man should run for hmself. Why? Because n a small communty personal cooperaton wthn the Councl and between Councl and the men calls for relatons not warped by lngerng antagonsm and suspcon. The comparson of the Stu-C race wth bg cty poltcs became even funny at tmes, for anyone not runnng. But now the tme for anger and laughter s over. The Councl must try to forget ts electon splts and act as a group of ndvduals wth ths ssue frst on ts agenda the best nterests of the men as a whole. Laundry troubles crop up perodcally. The latest colorful epsode nvolves \l Kennedy, who put a hathmat n the Bendx wth hs wash. Result: a lovely shade of green. He s thus vyng for top honor* n the brght undes category wth h roommate, John Rppey, who allowed a red sock to turn ht wash pnk. A pquant blue hue can he ohtaued from one par of dungarees, accordng to several experts n the feld. Bleach, anyone? Best wshes to Los Fehlau whose engagement was announced last week. The usual blushes ensued from announcement of the neat and messy rooms judgng at Betty Mal- Nght. "But t's so hard to keep Hacker's room two lookng nce!" Rand had no booby prze, so the senor proctors gracously donated ther prze to the whole dorm. The sgn on the edbles nvolved reads, "Thrty-one lcks to each lollpop.'' The senors dressed for dnner one nght last week... all sxty-two of them. They paraded nto the dnng hall from the thrd floor sngng "Easter Parade" wearng hats, large earrngs and gloves. Underclassmen returned the song wth a chorus of "Oh, You Beautful Doll." Someone suggested that coed dnng mght he mproved by a headwater system to usher stray guests nto sutable coed company. "Table for two? Ths way, sr." "N'ear the orchestra? That wll nvolve a slght addtonal charge..." Rngsde seats would probably he nearest the door to the ktchens. Or perhaps, the faculty? Wrtng n the January quarterly ssue of the Appalachan Tralway News, Dr. Roy Farfcld noted that one hundred and eghty-seven people traveled twelve mles of the Appalachan Tral ths past fall wthout serous njury except for one spraned ankle. Under the Sponsorshp of the Bates Outng Club, Bates students undertook two mass trps on the Appalachan Tral. The frst hke on Oct. 5 was a clmb up Saddleback Mountan. The one hundred and twentyseven students made up what s beleved to le the largest group ever to travel a secton ot the tral. The Saddleback trp found the clmbng enthusasts forced to cope wth slppery footng on the snowcovered upper -.lopes. Everyone came through n fne shape, except for one coed who spraned an ankle on one of the few dry spots at the summt. Two husky students anl two wllng faculty members gallantly came to the rescue and carred the njured grl on ther- backs the last four and one-half mles. Two weeks later on Oct. 19. sxty students set out to conquer Baldpate Mountan. The clmb turned out to he a most exctng and harrowng one when some of the members found a drvng wnd and often made progress slow and dffcult. In hs account of the trp whch appeared n the Tralway News, Dr. ("arfeld wrote. 'At several ponts n the crevce-flled tral, we'could pro-', gress n safety only by formng a human chan and passng frst one and then another down the rocks. A week,or so ago he recorded a speech for the "Voce of Amerca" rado show n New York Cty, comparng the educatonal systems n the two countres. Nyan thnks that Bates s about as dffcult academcally as the "Lycee", and also sad that thev taught a sort of cultural hertage course n Vet Nam as well..there the emphass was on phlosophy, hut areas lke art and poltcal hstory were covered as well. Nyan lkes the core plan very much, an-l mentoned that Relgon 100 has helped hm understand Chrstanty much more than he dd before. 7 Itsx THE BATES STUDENT, MARCH 18, 1953, By Pete Knapp The shoutng s all over for the basketball season, but stll a fant echo remans the bggest Echo beng that publcaton of the same name prnted at a small, coed nsttuton at Watervlle whose chef clam to wnter fame appears to be a door-stretchng crew of basketbalers. Colby College had a great basketball team ths past season one - whose playng certanly was a credt to ther school. Although wth any wnnng team the opposton tends.to play down ther achevements, few would do that at Rates and would grant Colby had a fne team. However, evdently just wnnng basketball games wasn't enough for some sectons of the Mule student body as the Echo clams to have been on the hgh sde of the good sportsmanshp contest. For example, n a sport column cleverly called Mule Kcks. (Colby Echo, March 6, pg. 5), one member of the Mule famly defntely s kckng. Quote: "And at the Bates szzler... ths edtor became aware that there exsted qute a number of contests besdes the obvous one on the court... Another battle began wth the openng whstle and lasted throughout the entre torrd tussle. It was the Fans vs. Naglc duel. Ths was, wthout a doubt, one of the best dsplays of poor sportsmanshp ths edtor has ever wtnessed... The war on Ro's nerves reached a pont when over a score of Bates rooters extracted whte flags and began wavng them frantcally about. No one seemed to know to whom or at whom they were wavng; t could have been rjo; t could have been one of the refs." "And there was stll another lttle tff gong on durng the game that was perhaps too subtle for the majorty of fans... the regular Soum-Nagle affar. (Mr. Soum s a referee.) I don't want to make Ro look lke a glutton for punshment, as a matter of fact, I would back hm 100% n both arguments, but ths one should be brought out before t s forgotten. It seems that Mr. Soum and Mr. Nagle just don't ht t off as best they could. And snce the former s a referee and the latter only the best rebounder n the state, the former has the rght to slap T.F.'s on the latter." Now perhaps t seems that dggng up post mortcms on the hoop season at ths date s a bt foolsh, but n ths case I thnk t necessary. A charge has been made aganst Bates fans whch I feel s a lttle strong and nvald. Granted our basketball fans have been gulty of a few nstances of poor sportsmanshp at some of the games (namely, bell-rngng and clappng whle opposng playertake foul shots), but wth a few authortatve reprmands the sr practces ceased. But the fact s, that athletes can be just as gulty of poor sportsmanshp as the fans. Not to accuse Ro Nagle of poor Sportsmanshp, t must be ponted out that the fans were not on Nagle's massve neck untl sad Mule and Ref Soum were carryng out ther verbal tete-a-tete. Secondly, t must be ponted ou! that the Alumn Gym was quet as a Chapel Vespers servce whle the vstng Mules were at the foul strpe whle prmtve grun's, shouts, screams and whstles ssued from the Colby sde whenever a crucal foul shot was due for the Bobcats. Pont three. The "whte flags" (.e. handkerchfs) were extracted and waved only after the Colnplayer n ssue was temporarly benched for language unbefttng a representatve of a Mane athletc squad. Sportsmanshp s not a oneway affar. It s a mutual affar nvolvng both athletes and spectators. If one group volates ths code, the other has a perfect rght to show ndgnaton to a reasonable extent. I certanly hope the athlete - fan relatonshp between Colby and Bates remans on the usual hgh level and s no way changed by ths two-way journalstc crtcsm that s currently exstng. It s made n the hope of preservng the nterests of good sportsmanshp and I thnk my fellow sportswrter at Colby wll agree on that score. AD LIBS... And there are stll enough people around the school who are askng about hockey at Bates. Ths subject has been thrown about ever snce the game was dropped here some twenty years ago. But now hockey s comng nto the lmelght of professonal and collegate sports, and many avd hockey enthusasts would lke to see the game reborn at Bates. Fnancal Problem Great At a school whch s as small and as lmted fnancally as Bates, the problem of supportng a team s the matter of prme mportance. Lackng the facltes for ce s the greatest drawback. However, recently a group of boys representng the Outng Chn n the Carnval game managed to practce at St DOOM'S Arena for two hours at the cost of about SO cents per player. Of course, ths cost s nfntely small compared to hgh prces pad by other teams around the country. The problem of managng, coachng, and outfttng an athletc club must be taken nto consderaton. There s no argument as to how heavly these would burden the pockets of the Bursar, but there may possbly be reason to beleve that wth the proper backng, the squad mght pay for tself or at least pay a good part of the total cost. But a team would have to have the backng of not only the student body, but also the townspeople. Some proponents of ths cause beleve that n a hockeycrazy town lke Lewston there would be no problem on ths score' but contrary to ths belef, are there too many teams n ths dstrct (o allow the nterest of the local tans? Team Materal Another Queston There s only one other pont t;> consder, and that s from where s the materal supposed, to come? There are a good number o players who are presently enrolled n the school who could make rp the nucleus of a team, and wth the proper amount of practce and coachng, they mght he a wnnng team n the Mane League, whch s not of very hgh calbre. But consder the Students n the local hgh and prep schools who are hockey players, and good hockey players, who mght be nfluenced to attend Bates and play the sport. If a few St. Dont's players were to go to the school, they would not only brng wth them natve ablty as athletes, but also they would carry wth them the nterest and support of the townspeople on whom the fnancal success of a team would depend. It s possble to have a hockey team at Bates, but t s very mprobable that the Alumn or the Admnstraton wll consder t for many years to come. Wth the expandng of the college and the added costs of admnstraton, t s very unlkely. But f there was enough nterest on the part of the students, and enough honest effort and backng, perhaps a hockey team at Bates could be establshed. cjfe Perfect Honeymoon > doesn't "just happen" VOU mn plan It. Although the varsty was able to wn only one of ther sx meets ther pont totals got progressvely hgher as the season went on, and the ndoor season ended wth everyone n good condton The frosh were able to come up wth a wnnng four and three record, showng qute a bt of promse. Sophs To Help Wth an ndoor season of competton under ther belts, man;. sophomores should be able to add even more n the comng season. Ed Holmes. Phl Cowan, and Don Howell gave Bates strength n the weghts that t has long lacked Along wth Count Swll, these boys were responsble for mav ponts, and wll be expected to :>ee) up ther good work ths sprng. Added to the squad wll be Buzz Barton, outstandng last >ear a- a freshman shot putter. Ed Mcknnon. who was busy durng the wnter season helpng the Garnet hoop forces, wll he out to help n the runnng department as a quarter mler, He wll be expected to add a lot after hs showngs last sprng. Another new face on the varsty squad s that of Gl Crmes. In hs frst try at a varsty sport, t s hoped that Grmes wll bolster the sprnters. Buzz Brd proved to be good new.- as he ran the two mle for the frst tme n hs lfe ndoors ths wnter. It s only reasonable to say that he wll mprove even more when he gets outdoors ths sprng. Wth Bob Goldsmth apparently over hs leg trouble he wll be able to contrbute even more than he has n the past. Clyde Eastman, Tom Hallday. Cal Jodat. Roger Schmutz. Doug Fay. Bob Abbott, Curt Osborne. John l.nd. John Dalco, I.u Brown, and Paul MacAvoy wll all be out lvng to get those wnnng ponts. All were actve durng the ndoor season. Frosh Look Strong Por the freshmen t was Dan Harrows and Sherwood I'ark'hurst halng the pont parade most of the tme. Dck Hooper was a consstent wnner, and Hob Drayto'. Greg Clarke. Don Gnand. Added to ths group.as they move outsde for the sprng season wll be basketballers Saul "Pepper" Glman, Dck Jenkns, and Jm Upton, as well as.mm Davs. Much s expected of Glman n the hgh jump.
