Marlowe: Mascot at work By Tom Marshall Managng edtor Just over two years ago. Matt Marlowe was slammed to the floor n a basketball game aganst rval Morehead State Unversty at McBrayer Arena. t was a prde-buster for the S-foot-8 nch, 145-pound then-sophomore, but now, as a senor, he's gettng a lttle respect on the court He's currently ranked second n the naton, but the natonal ttle and a spot n professonal sports arc wthn hs reach. As a mascotthat s. "There's always that chance you make t to the major leagues," Marlowe Unversal Cheerleadng Assocaton judged hm second among the top four mascots from cheerleadng squads throughout the country based on vdeotaped performances sent n by the contestants. Although Marlowe ranked second wth hs hghlght flm, the ttle s stll open and wll be decded after lve performances by the four fnalsts at the College Cheerleadng Natonal Champonshps Aprl 9-13 n San Antono. Eastern Kentucky Unversty or EDTORALS Gve up some change Staff salares over $50,000 should be cut "hen Gov. Brereton Jones announced hs budget proposal to the state legslature Feb. 6 he made some bold moves and some not-sopretty cutbacks. Among those cutbacks he proposed was a 5 percent slash of fundng for state unverstes. Communty colleges fared better, nettng dentcal fundng n 1993 and a 3 percent slp n fundng n The governor dd make bg commtments to educaton reform, parks and recreaton and health care. For ths, we offer a tp of the hat But Jones further proposed a 2 percent cut for salares of state employees who make more than $50,000 begnnng July 1. Our unversty, among others, wll also have to face a second 5 percent cut wthn only months of the frst He also nvted partcpaton n ths salary cut by other offcals, such as unversty admnstrators, not drectly covered by the state personnel system. For unversty presdent Hanly Funderburk that would mean acut of more than $2,400 from hs paycheck, whch wll amount to $122,300 for For the executve assstant to the presdent Charles Whtlock, t could add up to a loss of more than $1,300 of hs salary of $67,032. John Rowlctt, vce presdent for academc affars and research wll make $97,599 n He could expect to lose a chunk of cash n the vcnty of $1,900. Admnstrators makng more than $50,000 can make a dfference n the pendng lack of funds by acceptng the cuts n ther salares. but wll they allow ther salares to be cut to further ther educatonal goals? Hgher educaton, t seems, s not such a hgh prorty, or s t? t's as f Jones s askng them to put then- money where ther mouths are. Among the tems unversty deans mentoned for potental cuttng are development funds, travel, renovaton, operatng expenses and sabbatcals and a reducton n the number of part-tme nstructors at the unversty. Deans also sad copyng may be cut to a mnmum, meanng more coped materal wll be charged to students at the bookstore. t would seem that wth salares n excess of $50,000 the admnstrators would be wllng to spare the money for these professors to make a few copes. n addton, we ask that all unversty employees makng above $50,000 accept the cut for educaton's sake. We ask that they show us, not just tell us. Legslators also have a say n ths proposal and we encourage them to demand more money for hgher educaton ths sesson. Askng the unverstes to endure a 10 percent loss n fundng wthn months s too much for any organzaton to take. There are three branches of government and the legslatve sts alongsde the executve n power wth the ablty to check and balance the other two branches. t's tme for the legslature to check the governor's proposed cut n hgher educaton spendng and maybe loosen the belt a lttle. AT A GLANCE The ssue The budget crss for unverstes and a voluntary 2 percent pay cut for unversty employees makng over $50,000. Our opnon Those unversty staff makng over $50,000 should accept a pay cut. t s all Greek to Greeks nsurance companes are endng "New System" /\ year ago ths week we were n the process of examnng the evoluton of the Greek system and where t was headng. One year later, ndcators are pontng the Greek system n a drecton that may mean the demse of the system as t s now structured. Sharply ncreasng lablty nsurance rates for fraterntes and sorortes are the backbone of the Greek system's cur- rent troubles. Wth each passng year, nsurance companes are demandng fraterntes and sorortes put a shorter leash on the socal actvtes of ther members, whle contnung to ncrease rates. The Greek system at Eastem and other unverstes answer to the nsurance companes' beckonng wth lttle more than a whmper. Because of the Fraternty nsurance Purchasng Group (FPG), a plan that over 75 percent of the naton's Greek organzatons follow, some Greeks argue they are havng some basc freedoms taken away because they wear letters. Natonwde, Greek leaders say t s nonsense and preach of a "New System" that wll replace the "Anmal House" partyng mage wth a much more clean-cut look that emphases phlanthropc projects and cultural dversty. Greek leaders, however, are sugar-coatng what the nsurance companes are dong, ether n an attempt to keep ther masses content or because they do not understand what s happenng themselves. Mles away from Kentucky, there are several lobbyng groups who are workng to rd our naton's campuses of Greek organzatons because they consder them a threat even AT A GLANCE The ssue The falure of the current Greek system because of rsng nsurance rates. Q Our Opnon Greek leaders must address the nsurance ssue serously or the "New Systemwll fal lke Communsm dd. under the "New System." They seem to be succeedng by contnung to push up the prce of lablty nsurance. One of those groups s Securty on Campus. Ths lobbyng group not only has the ears of many legslators, but also those of some powerful nsurance company executves. The group's founder, Howard Clery, predcts the Greek system wll be eradcated n the next fve years as a result of pressure hs group and others are puttng on nsurance companes. Lobbyng groups are forcng Greek organzatons to pass tghter standards and prce ncreases on to ther chapters, and the chapters on to ther membershp. Across the country, a few Greeks have become so dscontent wth the rules passed down to them that they have taken ther partes underground to avod beng sanctoned. Others may soon follow f the rules contnue to get strcter. Some Greek chapters may choose to go underground to avod not only the tough rules but the hgh cost of nsurance. Unfortunately, once n hdng, sojne chapters may just forget the chartable work and cultural dversty of the "New System" that were held out to the rest of socety as a purpose for ther exstence. Ths move to a more covert mode could be a major draw for potental members who are unwllng each semester to pay hundreds of dollars to have ther ndvdual freedoms taken away by the "New System." f Greek leaders contnue to gnore what s happenng to them and fal to stand up to the nsurance companes soon, the "New System" wll fal just as Communsm dd. LETTERS FROM OUR READERS Columnst off-base about gays n servce We are Gays and Lesbans Unted for Educaton, a group at the Unversty of Kentucky. Although our group prmarly s organzed to serve UK students, staff and faculty, we also have qute a few vstng members from EKU and other neghborng schools. Our EKU members recently brought to our attenton an edtoral by dnt Rley n the Jan. 16,1992, and asked us to respond as a group n the absence of a sun lar organzaton at EKU. (Wemght add that EKU s de only major unversty n Kentucky wthout a lesbgay - lesbans, bsexuals and gay males - organzaton.) Mr. Rley dscusses the ban on homosexuals n the mltary and the ncreasng controversy on college campuses over ths dscrmnaton and ts effects on campus ROTC programs. Although Mr. Rley brngs out several good ponts as to the Department of Defense's (DOD) poston on ths ssue, he fals to examne ther poston n full. ndeed, the DOD has long ratonalzed ts poston on the homophle ban by vewng people who enter nto same sex relatonshps as securty rsks and mparments to the mltary's msson. A recent Pentagon report stated that gay mltary personnel out-performed ther heterosexual counterparts. The personnel studed were lesbgays who were later forced out of the mltary. At frst, the DOD attempted to suppress ths study untl forced to publcly release t at the behest of U. S. Sen. Barney Frank, who s gay. Moreover, the DOD report concludes that lesbgay people are not a securty rsk as they do not possess some secret capable of beng used aganst them n a homophobc socety. Thus, n the vew of performance and securty, a person's sexual orentaton whether hetero, b or homo should not be an ssue n the defense of our country. Apparently, the Pentagon thnks so, too, n tmes of war. Durng the Persan G u f War, known lesbgay mltary personnel were gven actve duty whle also nformed that they would be dscharged once the war was over. Ths s especally true for lesbans. Clearly, the DOD's polcy has no proven ratonal bass and s therefore based on a fear channeled nto legal dscrmnaton. On many campuses throughout our naton, concerned ndvduals of all sexual orentatons are focusng on ROTC programs as (he most blatant form of homophobc dscrmnaton on campuses. The real tar- get s not therotc.butthe DOD's polcy. Unlke Mr. Rley's concluson, many Amercana feel mat fear of losng a campus ROTC s not suffcent cause to tactly support dscrmnaton. Earler n ths century, would Mr. Rley have decded that t was OK to ban Afrcan-Amercans from certan organzatons because of de possble economc backlash? By Mr. Rley' s analyss, slavery would stll exst due lo the dre economc affects of abolton on the Southern economy. A.Jones Gays and Lesbans Unted tor Educaton Unversty of Kentucky Rehrng of pros, wthout reasonng Scottsh poet Robert Burns once wrote.'the best lad schemes of mce and men gang aft agley." The statement seems to descrbe well what has happened to the good ntentons of the legslature when t enacted laws whch mandated the formng of the governng boards of Kentucky'snsttutonsof hgher educaton. t s worthy to note here that recent actons by you, the Board of Regents, are manfestatons of the purpose of Rep. Scorsone's bll whch would alter the selecton process of those governng boards. t should come as no surprse that crtcal thnkng s the ultmate goal of any educatonal system and that crtcal thnkng leads to sound judgements based on ratonal standards nstead of the junk-heap of unwarranted conclusons whch you have recently dsplayed. At your last meetng you extended Presdent Funderburk's contract The publshed reasonng was somethng lke, "t seems mat he s dong a good job. "Ths rases the queston, what s a good job? Makng a judgement mples mpaur' n fl»g«'n«t» ansflsr Your decson to extend Presdent Funderburk's contract was wthout standard - t was superclous. Whle, n your opnon, Presdent Funderburk may "seem to be dong a good job," has hs admnstraton furthered the processes or goals of better educaton n Kentucky? Many say no. t s as f he has only fostered the dea of admnstraton as an end n tself nstead of a means to support the educatonal process. There s now on the admnstratve payroll a presdent, vce presdent, dean or charperson for every 120 to 130 students, or one for every fve to sx faculty. On the other had, classes of 60 to 70 are not out of the norm. Lsa Helton, a 22-year-old socal work major from Barbourvlle, sad, "You bascally need to specalze. thnk you need to go nto a major that s not general any more. So many people major n broad subjects they overrun the job market. thnk the way to go s to specalze n on a specfc area.'* ' Harvey suggests students can oflcncnhancc ther chances by pckng up a foregn language, a Computer course, and Tps for job huntng Remember that the ntervewer s lookng for an excuse to reject your applcaton. Make sure that you have provded all of the requested nformaton. Don't be wshy-washy. f you want the job, make sure that they don't forget your name or face. Make follow-up calls, but don't become a nusance. Be prepared to explan why you are the best person for the job. Don't expect the resume to do the work for you. The ntervew s probably more mportant. Consder whether or not you would be wllng to relocate. f there s a job n your feld, there s a good chance that you may need to move to t by takng a speech class. "1 have no doubt that the economy wll come back around. Hstorcally thas been cyclcal and comeout," Harvey Many students blame the job market outlook on the recesson. "Bush can do somethng to create more jobs. All these layoffs are useless. Our presdent can do somethng about t to boost the economy," sad Harry Dent, a 19-year-old Englsh major from Frankfort "The economy does affect the amount of dollar offered,'' Harvey "When there's lots of canddates, job offers don't go up as hgh. When there arc fewer canddates and more jobs, job offers tend to go up." Some hope A job Held wth a partcularly good outlook s health care. Harvey sad that one reason ths Held s so strong s because of the agng populaton of Amercan ctzens. Average job offers n the feld of health care for bachelor's degree canddates ncreased over the perod of Sept to Sept by a dollar amount of 6.15 percent, accordng to a report by College Placement Councl. Lnn Mcdln.a 19-year-old occupatonal therapy major from Corbn.-sccs hs chances of fndng a job as hopeful. " wll just fll out applcatons anywhere can. They are n demand rght now," Medln "As tght as the job market s rght now, t s extremely mportant that people not only apply for postons, but actually compete for postons," Harvey "Applcants should compete rather than apply. Too many people hear about a job and send n a generc resume wth a generc letter. t s about as exctng to that personnel drector as walkng down to the malbox and gettng a pece of occupant mal." Competton Harvey sad job applcants should take the ntatve and fnd out who n partcular to send the letters to, and to talor that letter toward the person. "Take your tme, and word t, and make sure t s neat The job you really want somebody else really wants to," Harvey Harvey sad employers are usually lookng at a potental employee's study sklls, tme management sklls, cultural dversty, experence and leadershp potental. They are also seekng people who are partcpants and not just passve observers, he "The more areas you have an nterest n, the better t s gong to serve you." Harvey Harvey sad that employers are also ncreasngly lookng for employees who can communcate effectvely. Wrtng sklls ncludng the ablty to form memos, reports and year-end summares, as well as oral communcaton sklls, are mportant Flexblty Harvey sad applcants may also consder the need to be geographcally flexble n order to ncrease ther chances of fndng a job. "n the mmedate future, the job market s gong to be hard. They have to spend that much more tme gettng ready for t" Harvey "When you have an ncreased populaton n certan parts of the country lke Florda, all logc tells you they are gong to need more people n servces lke teachng. Rght now we hear that because of reduced revenues, they are gong to have to be layng off teachers." "Need s not the only varable. Resources are also a varable," Harvey "We see more and more that employers are havng to fnd more cost effectve ways to recrut" Resumes A servce that CD&P s recommendng for students s Resume Expert t asssts students n wrtng a resume and puts them on a natonal database. The CD&P offce regsters approxmately 1,000 students and 1,200 alumn per year. Harvey sad that CD&P s swtch n g to Resume Expert for ts job referrals. Resume Expert s avalable for $25 through CD&P. t works by havng students enter ther nformaton on a dsk. The data s then entered nto the database n the CDP offce. "Employers may not come here to ntervew, but they can have quck access to our canddates va a computer dsk. That wll allow us to assst employers who have never recruted at EKU," Harvey "We know that t wll save students money n the long run, and n many cases the shortrun. We know students have pad a lot more than that to have someone prepare a resume," he "The job search s a job n tself." Progress photo try DAVD RCHARDSON Many students search n the classfed ads for a Job. Goodbye classes; hello unemployment? By Chrstna Rankn Staff wrter Many college students fantasze of the day when graduaton arrves and they fnd ther dream job. For college students today, that dream job may be a deluson. Due to the recesson, students and graduates are fndng t more dffcult to get a job n ther feld of study. Bll Zomes, an employee of the Department of Employment Servces n Rchmond, sad employees currently n the work force are stayng put because they are hestant to shuffle jobs n such an unsteady market "There are a lot less jobs. There's not as much turnover," he There are some jobs, though, that are actually seekng workers, sad Zornes. "There's a lot more demand, even n factores, for people wth computer-related experence. Jobs arc becomng very automated and computerzed. Good math sklls and computer experence are very helpful," he Zomes added that he has notced that employers are oftentmes more eager to hre an employee who s sklled n several areas. "A lot of employers look at people and how they can crossover from possbly one feld to another very quckly," he But for graduates, the opportunty for employment followng graduaton s more grm than ever. Zornes sad some students are turnng to unemployment servces for help. A person may qualfy for employment servces by comng n and regsterng through an applcaton. They explan ther work hstory and what type of job they are searchng for. "They really gve us an dea of what they want us to contact them about The employer gves us a job, a job descrpton, what he's gong to pay and hs requrements. We go through our fles and then we call people," Zomes He sad they don't offer the applcant a job, but nstead "refer them to the employer, and the employer goes nto the more detal descrptons." The Department of Employment Servces does not place a requrement on applcants, and there s no fee. For more nformaton, call the Department of Employment Servces on Gbson Lane at

10 Arts & Entertanment Move revew Psychologcal thrller strs desre, decepton By Melssa Thomas Staff wrter Put greed, lust, anxety and murder together and the result s a suspense-thrller called ' Fnal Analyss." Ths R-ratcd shocker promses to be one of the best moves of the year. "Fnal Arulyss"combncs decepton and romance to produce a delcous mxture of betrayal and sclfndulgcncc. The flm's credentals arc mpressve, ncludng three bg-name stars Rchard Gere, Km BasngcrandUma Thurman. Rchard Gere, whose credts nclude the 1990 smash ht "Pretty Woman," stars as Dr. Barr, a psychologst wth a taste for a dangerously beautful woman. Km Basngcr, renowned for her role as Vck Vale n the 1989 blockbuster "Batman," stars as Heather Evans, wfe of a gangster and sster of Dana, a psychotc. Lma Thurman, who ganed attenton through her role n "Dangerous Lasons," stars as Dana, a half-crazed, sexual psychotc and patent of Dr. Barr. The plot of "Fnal Analyss" focuses on a scheme of steamy seducton and decepton whch ultmately ends n destructon. The story lne s full of dramatc twsts and turns, takng vewers on a roller coaster rde through two hours of fast-paced, chllng suspense. n the openng scene. Dr. Barr s stcnng attentvely as Dana descrbes the recurrng bzarre dream that plagues her. n an attempt to evaluate Dana better, Barr contacts her sster. Heather. The resultng meetng ends n a nght of unbrdled passon. As the affar contnues, the plot thckens and stuatons portrayed n the begnnng of the move arc quckly revealed to be untrue. Barr turns out to be a fghter who s perfectly capable of playng the game of decepton. Heather evolves nto a vllancss capable of strkng fear nto all who are subjected to her wrath. And Dana, rather than beng a defenseless lamb, s revealed as a hungry loness who wll stop at no lengths to obtan what she desres. Exctement regns supreme n ths move. As soon as the events begn to slow down, another shockng dscovery s made whch serves to revve the tumultuous acton of the Flm. The concluson s an unexpected role reversal, wth Dana takng the whole scheme over. She not only deceves Barr, but her sster as well. Phl Joanou drects ths Wesley Strck screenplay, whch s from a story by Robert Bcrgcr and Strck. Joanou'scrcdts nclude the rock documentary "U2-Rattlc and Hum." The producton desgner s Dean Tavoulars, who won an Oscar for the second of the three "Godfather" Flms. The flm edtor s Thorn Noble, who also won an Oscar for the flm "Wtness." Jordan Croncnwcth, Oscar nomnee for "Peggy Sue Got Marred," s the drector of the flm's photography, the ntensty of whch s superb. The acton shots acheve an almost 3-D effect, makng the vewer crnge at lmes. The score s composed by George Fenton, a trple Oscar nomnee for hs work on "Gandh," "Cry Freedom" and "Dangerous Lasons." "Fnal Analyss" s a scorchng psychoanalytc thrller. 13 66 The Eastern Progress Sports Thursday, February 20,1992 Jerry Pennngton, edtor Jerry Pennngton nstant replay Women's hoops can be as exctng as men's l anyone tral to tell me that women's basketball can never be as exctng as men's basketball, would have to dsagree. The Lady Colonels' Feb. 8 game aganst the Lady Raders of Mddle Tennessee Slate Unversty was one of the most exctng basketball games have ever wtnessed, men's or women's. The acton actually started before the game. Eastern and Mddle were ted for second n the OVC wth two losses each. The Lady Colonels were also seekng revenge, because when they * vsted Mddle earler n the season, they were defeated by the Lady Raders. n the openng mnutes of the game, the Lady Colonels fought ther way to an 11 -pont lead, but Mddle quckly bounced back by bombng some three-ponters. t was obvous just by watchng that both teams were gvng t ther all. The Lady Colonels had lead the whole game, but Mddle kept hackng away at ther lead. Wth ther last bucket n the frst half, the Lady Raders clamed ther frst lead of the game. To add to the exctement, a mnor controversy broke out at halftmc. Just as the buzzer sounded, the referee blew the whstle ndcatng a foul on the Lady Colonels. The referee determned that the foul was commtted after the buzzer and dd not count. Ths quckly brought the Mddle Tennessee coaches off the bench n a shoutng frenzy. Despte the shouts and protests of the coaches and players, the referee stuck to hs orgnal call and the Lady Colonels left the floor at the half down by a pont. The referees of the game, along wth an enthusastc crowd, added more exctement. The crowd screamed and howled at the offcals, not because of unfar calls, but because of lack of calls. The referees were lettng too much contact go by wthout a whstle. Both fans and coaches were loudly vocng ther opnons of the way the game was beng offcated. The second half of the game was even more thrllng than the frst. Ths tme t was Mddle Tennessee who lead most of the half, but ther lead never exceeded fve ponts. Eastern managed to tc the game fve tmes n the second half, but never managed to get another lead untl only two and a half mnutes remaned. Scgcna Mackcroy made an nsde shot to put the.ady Colonels back on top. Shannah Mclntosh and Tffany Mayfcld both added buckets to the Lady Colonel lead, pullng them up by fve wth only a mnuc and a half left n the game and puttng Mddle Tennessee out of reach. Watchng the coaches and players jump and shout for joy at the end of the game hghlghted the Lady Colonel vctory. They had played and fought so hard to wn, and the prce of ther hard work had pad off. Ths was defntely one game n whch the fans got ther money's worth. QUZ CORNER Who holds the record for most passng yards n a sngle season for the Colonel football team?
