For a frst ssue I do really thnk the response from all concerned has been, and wll prove to me, an asset to our fraternty n the days to come, so " Come on all you young and old dvers, wherever you may me, rally round the shot-rope and let's get weavng.... Let's have all your deas, good or bad, we can only sort them out by correspondng and that's what I'M here for. If they are stcky I turn them over to the Edtor anyway. So. what?" Cheero for now, and keep breathng! YOUR SEC. COMMANDER F. C. GOODENOUGH, ROYAL NAVY It was a great shock to all who knew hm to hear of the sudden death of Commander Goodenough n a flyng accdent on October 6th. Commander Goodenough was Superntendent of Dvng for three years untl the end of 950 and commanded H.M.S. Reclam untl ths tme. Durng ths perod he contrbuted much to the dvng world. " Grumpy ", as he was almost unversally known, was grumpy only n name, and hs rather rugged exteror concealed a charm whch was completely genune. Wherever he went he made frends and there are many n all walks of lfe who wll deeply regret hs loss. It was not only those under hm, but hs superors too, who thought very hghly of hm, and t s ndeed sad that a career whch showed great promse should so suddenly be brought to an end. Hs wde nterests all showed the, adventurous sprt whch permeated hs character and he was afrad of nothng and no-one. In short---he was a man.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF DIVING Most dpchcks know that dvng s a pretty old job, but how many realse that a record was made of dvng jobs as long ago as 333 BC? Alexander the Great employed dvers to destroy the boom defences durng the sege of Tyre. Another bloke called Xerxes used dvers to salvage treasure from sunken Persan shps. An early menton of a dvng apparatus was made by a German n 40,5. It conssted of a helmet wth a leathern ar ppe to an ar bag on the surface. The famous Leonardo da Vnc made sketches of dvng gear wth the dver drawng down hs own ar from an ar ppe floatng on the surface. In 802 another dea, by an Englshman called Wllam Forder, used bellows to supply the ar to the dver. What prce " narks " n ths gear? Heave round the bellows! Gettng closer to modern tmes, Augustus Sebe's dress n 89 conssted of a metal helmet and a jacket. Ths gear was open at the wast, and the surplus ar escaped at wast level. The bggest step forward came n 837 wth the ntroducton of the " closed sut," practcally the sut we use to-day. A Dvng Bell started off as long ago as 599. Makes you thnk, doesn't t? H.M.S. RECLAIM By G. W. MATELOTS Matelots are bg and hary, but not always. Ther clothes are blue, ther eyes are blue and the lades on ther chests are very blue ndeed. Matelots draw. They draw ther tots, a weekly pttance, short commons and the long bow. They wll draw you one off f provoked. They are allergc to drafts. Matelots drp. They drp about the food, ther pay, ther mal, ther leave and mostly they drp about ther shp because ts nothng but a blank blank blank. Matelots boast. They boast about the food because ts better than the Army's, about the money they have to spend, about the leave, about not wantng any mal and not wrtng any anyway, and mostly they boast about ther last shp because ts better than ths- blank blank so and so. Matelots hate. They hate foregners, solders, canteenmanagers, cvlans, tcket nspectors, all offcers, all men wth shore jobs and the N.A.A.F.I. Matelots wash. They wash pantwork, they wash decks, they wash ther clothes n a bucket and they wash t out f the Jaunty has heard t before. Matelots are fond of. They are fond of anmals, chldren, beer except the beer they are drnkng all grls and especally the one at home. Matelots are curous. They are very curous on one pont, whch nobody can answed, " Why dd I jon?". 4 The number of developments n underwater search technques certanly staggers when one, looks back over the past few months, of search and subsequent locaton of " Affray " technques whch mght, n normal tmes, have taken years to develop. Among the dvng world they've attaned a certan notorety, though t was wth mxed feelngs that we frst receved them. Always prepared to gve somethng new a far tral, there was a suspcon of hostlty ths tme. I wsh t were possble to dscuss them n ths ssue, but untl we are sure of all the answers, the full story of our actvtes must reman a closed book. Only wth the survey of " Affray " dd we start usng the observaton chamber, all the prevous wrecks havng been nvestgated by the use of suted dvers. And what a wde varety of wrecks there were Cargo Shps, Landng Craft, Coasters, even a suspected Submarne, most, of them the result of the last war, many of them obvously sunk by bombs, judgng by the masses of twsted metal one encountered n these early dves, whle some of the wrecks presented very lttle evdence of damage. Well, to get back to the Chamber, I know almost everybody has seen t by now, but for those who haven't, there's a pcture of t on next page. It's an Italan job and has been loaned to us by Rsdon and Beasley, the Salvage Engneers. We have one of our own under way but t s not yet completed should be the last word n Obser- 6

vaton Chambers when t s ready. Ths one by Roberto Galleaz, of Italy, s pretty good and has been nvaluable to us wth a few adaptatons t could be deal. An hour can be spent qute comfortably n t down to a depth of about 500 feet. It's an absorbng busness, ths Chamber, and one's alloted hour passes all too quckly. Wth the ntroducton of M.F'.V.'s at the Dvng School, there opens up more scope than ever for the use of Chambers n the Servce. The day wll come I hope before long. More changes n Shp's Company seem nevtable before long n " Reclam ", before ths ssue goes to Press possbly. At the tme of wrtng Petty Offcer Peach has just been promoted to v.& Once clear of the water, the Snort had so many lftng and steadyng lnes attached that t must surely have been consdered the most mportant ton weght ever lfted. The edtoral staff of our dvng magazne are to be congratulated on producng the frst ssue and from all aboard " Reclam " : " Cheero for now and the best of luck wth all future ssues ". G.W. Chef congratulatons Johnny! Robbe and Nobby Hall shouldn't be far behnd hm. Bll Mddleton goes to Devonport Dvng School, beng releved by Scants. Wth these changes completed, and a few more trps out n md-channel, t should be about tme for a tranng cruse to Scotland. We cannot be qute sure about the programme, but wth the weather gettng progressvely worse, and dvng tme gettng shorter as Autumn approaches, t shouldn't be long before we wend our way North. Nobby mentoned n the last ssue about " all n a day's work " Hall. As you know he blew up from about 22 feet, the breastrope connecton to hs helmet beng torn off as seen n photograph. Had he not surfaced upsde down he would have been playng a harp by now. The shp lved up to her name nasmuch that durng the " Subsmash " operatons she " reclamed " the Snort Mast. 6 Mstaken Identty One of our very deep dvers, whlst travellng " up the lne " was sttng wth hs rght hand proppng up hs poor tred head. Suddenly he was shocked to hs nnermost beng, by a dear old lady who asked " Are you n the caterng branch of the Navy?" "No Madam, what makes you thnk that?" " Well," sad the old dear, "You have a mlk jug on your cuff." Turn your badge upsde-down and see for yourselves, dpahcks. Who was the dpchck who, on observng the pumps crew turnng the pump handles the wrong way, sad, wth a voce drppng wth heavy drama, " Don't turn 'em that way or you'll suck the dver back up hs ar ppe." R. H. RICHARDSON 7

Dear Readers, When you read ths I expect you wll say that t's all Hooey, but, beleve me, ths story s fact and as told to me (as far as I can remember) and also told to lots of other people n our dvng world. Maybe, f I told you hs name you would remember hm very well as the "Chppy " who could really spn a bender makng hs lsteners beleve t was true, and have no doubt n my own mnd that very often he actually convnced hmself, stll, lots of us do, don't we? Anyway, here s the story as told to me t s tall and farfetched but t s orgnal. call t : THE MAN WHO STOPPED THE GERMAN ADVANCE or THE NORWEGIAN STOP-GAP Tme : 500, 94? Place : Somewhere n Norway. Stuaton : Pretty grm. The Germans had been advancng steadly for the past few days and the small detachment of Brtsh troops were hopelessly.outnumbered. Naturally the Navy was close by to assst where necessary and ths s where our " hero " appears on the scene. Landng Partes already havng been detaled on board H.M. Shp, we fnd Chppy n charge of No. Poneer Secton,.and hs secton had been standng by " snce early dawn, you can bet your bottom dollar that even f they were a lttle bt weary they were far from beng bored. " Who could be bored wth Chppy /c?" Next! We fnd the Party ashore and havng left a bewldered No. 3 Platoon back n the shp wonderng who the honey-tongued Chef was who had persuaded them that t was hs boat they were mannng, see hm and hs boys alongsde the roadway checkng up on ther gear, "YES" Tools all correct : The Temple-Cox's gun, complete wth eght boxes of ammunton of varyng szes, also a few plates of steel that had caused so much trouble n handlng to shore. As Chppy and hs platoon were watng for orders a very tred and dsprted Army were wendng ther way toward the beaches backward from the advancng Germans, and Chppy was heard to remark on more than one occason, " Oh! those poor boys!". Suddenly, n the dstance, a heavy rumble, and Chppy told hs lads to keep quet whlst he hmself stood up to hear the advancng noses better, only to promptly le down agan when a Jerry snper took a pot-shot at hm. Ah! that fleetng moment of observaton. GERMAN TANKS rollng down the road from a dstant hllsde. Our hero once agan knew t was up to hm to stop those tanks at all costs. A plan of acton had already formed n hs mnd Frst : He fenced hmself n wth those plates that had caused 8 so much trouble gettng to shore, then he set hs secton to work loadng Cox's gun-barrels. He was now ready for any onslaught that mght beset hm, and whlst watng for the advancng tanks to approach he fred a few bolts, just to get the correct range, or thereabouts. On came the tanks, 000 yds yds stll he wated, surely those tanks must run hs small caboose over, thereby gettng rd of the Army's last lne of defence. But-NO, Chppy s a very patent man, 40 yds.... Chppy already loaded, fred, re-loaded, fred agan, stll the leadng tank kept comng forward, fre, and at only 20 yards the tank suddenly went careerng up the bank at the sde of the road, rolled over, fell back nto the roadway and burst nto flames, frst blood to No. Secton R.N. (don't forget. Chppy).,The next tank advanced more slowly frng as t came, but all undaunted our hero never faltered. Fre, re-load, no need to fre agan, he'd scored a drect ht wth hs frst bolt, and the second tank suffered the same fate as the frst. The secton were once agan thnkng that after all, they mght stll be able to draw tomorrow's tot, drnkng t would be another matter, but who cares, tomorrow never comes. The remanng tanks fell back, ther drvers no doubt wonderng what ths new secret was that the Brtsh had n ther possesson. Takng advantage of ths, our frend changed hs poston (quckly) ; he also changed over plates, the others beng rather full of holes he dd tell me that he only shfted them because t was ranng and the holes let the ran n. Chefy wasn't gong to get wet for no blnkng Jerry, and he had left hs olskn back n the shp. Suddenly the look-out reported that two tanks were approachng rather rapdly. Chppy took a quck glance, amed, fred, reloaded, fred agan, all n one movement, but stll the tanks came on. Once more he loaded, FIRE, shft barrel, shft strker, re-load, FIRE. After takng careful am he found that t wasn't necessary to,fre agan, as by ths tme both the tanks were burnng brghtly, completely blockng the road, thus gvng the last of the defenders a chance to return to ther shp n complete dsregard for the enemy. On return to the shp the Captan then recommended our hero for a medal ; naturally he refused, remarkng that after all he'd only done hs duty. The Admral nssted that he accept the medal. He dd. Apart from a lttle added fabrcaton, ths s exactly how ths story was heard by me. Look out for the next story : It's even taller than ths one. " The Motor Cycle That Dsappeared ". " PUSSER "

DUNLOP Manufacturers of UNDER WATER SWIMSUITS and self-contaned BREATHING APPARATUS for the ROYAL NAVY DUNLOP SPECIAL PRODUCTS LTD FORT DUNLOP ERDINGTON BIRMINGHAM THE CLEARANCE DIVERS Better late than never s not a proverb that should be used n the dvng world, but s the one that best suts our contrbuton to ths magazne. We mssed the frst number through no fault of our own, t was just a case of " Please Sr, we weren't told ". However, here we are n copy number two to make our debut and ntroduce ourselves, so " How do readers, and greetngs from `Lochnvar' where the dvers carry t on ther back and lke t!" It s an mpossble task to ntroduce each ndvdual member of our party, but a few words about the more notable characters mght not come amss. All our ranks are recruted from the Standard Dvers and perhaps the most famous and certanly the oldest s " Mck " Carns. Ths grand old man from the Emerald Isle, qualfed n the days of crnolne dresses, ths beng part of the dvers' dress and not lades attre. He s our store kng and s known as " Nothng wthout a sgnature " Carns. Next s " Deeps " Stanley, who must be known to all dvers who support two or three badges on ther left arm. No further comment s necessary. " Jock " Grbben, G.M., stll sunburnt from hs recent spell n the Medterranean, s another of our dstngushed company. He s one of the few remanng members of the war-tme " P partes. A recent addton to our ranks s P.T.I. McKnley, C.G.M., who has forsaken brawn for bran. He may be found any evenng sttng on hs bed wrtng mxture breathng formulae on hs Indan Clubs. The Offcers are, wth one excepton, newcomers to the branch and the only name that wll be known s that of Mr. McLanachan who, before hs draft north, was the Admral of Horse L,ake> It s not to be wondered that wth such an array of talent as ths to tran and gude us, the standard of the Clearance Dver s hgh. As s known we are a comparatvely new organsaton, but already we have outposts at Portsmouth, Malta and Hong Kong. Reports from these bases ndcate that the name and work of the Clearance Dvng Branch s becomng known and t s no longer a mysterous band of underwater workers. Our growth has not been wthout ts problems, but these have been overcome and bgger and better thngs are hoped for n the near future. Statoned as we are at Port Edgar, some 0 mles from Ednburgh and about 400 mles from' the nearest Dvng School, we tend to lose touch wth our companons of the " pump and ppelne " servce. It s hoped that through the medum of ths magazne ths wll be overcome and a stronger lason between the two branches made. src/cr...mlfalara 3.M.

PEARL DIVING Ever wondered f there was a story about your shrt button, or the strng of pearls round my lady's neck? That button, or pearl, 'had ts begnnng thousands of mles away wth a knky-hared Kanaka plungng from the gunwhale of a pearlng lugger. Pearlng grounds and fsheres stretch from Chna and Japan, from Polynesa and Australa to Ceylon and the Persan Gulf. Black edged shell comes from Polynesa, but the fnest mlky whte shell s found off Western Australa and Thursday Island. No gear s used by the dver. Clad only n a lon cloth, he holds a stone for weght and plunges to the sea bed. Armed wth a ponted stck, he prses the oysters loose, flls the bag at hs sde and returns to the surface to ease hs stranng lungs. Among the dvers are found Tamls, Japanese and Polynesans but no whte men. The reason beng that the average expectaton of lfe of these pearl dvers s " fve years ". Pearls and pearl shells were worth nearly seven hundred thousand pounds to Western Australa n 946, and ths value s ncreasng as santy returns to the world markets and trade booms. So the next tme you see that pearl, or do up that shrt button, remember those natve dvers that made them possble. Wthout S.9's too. THE BOATSWAIN (Q.D.D.) Yet another suffx has now been added to the long lst denotng specalsts n the Royal Navy Q.D.D. meanng " Qualfed n Deep Dvng ", a ttle now appled to qualfed Commssoned Boatswans, n leu of Commssoned Gunners. Pror to 945, the dutes of Offcer n Charge 6f all dvng both ashore and afloat, devolved upon the Senor Commssoned Gunner or Commssoned Gunner, who was responsble to the Gunnery Offcer for dvng and the correct functonng and mantenance of all dvng apparatus. The evoluton of the specalst Deep Dvng Offcer commenced n 929, and n subsequent years research and development n dvng, and deep dvng n partcular was carred out resultng n depths of over 300 feet beng reached n tdal waters, usng the flexble dress- and submersble observaton chamber from H.M.S. " Tedworth ". The researches, n frendly competton Wth other Naves, were sponsored by the Admralty and admnstered by the Captan, H.M.S. " Excellent ", n collaboraton wth Sr Robert Davs, Sebe Gorman & Co., Ltd., Professor J. B. S. Haldane, Professor Sr Leonard Hll and Servce Medcal Specalsts. The 3 CRICKET By ROG The long awated crcket match took place on No. 2 U.S. Ground on Thursday, July 26th, between the Vernon Dvers and H.M.S. Pluto, and we were severely beaten by a far better team, although wth more practce we've certanly got the talent at the moment. P.O. ljutler and P.O. Smee bowled well, but couldn't do much about the stylsh battng of Pluto's Lt. Comdr. Durell and P.O. Warne, who settled down and showed us how runs can be scored. P.O. Hall bowled well after fndng hs length, and not once dd the feldng let up. The Dvers' outstandng player was Sapper Ayto, who scored a good 22 runs before beng bowled. by Barber who, wth Answorth, skttled the remander of us out for a mere 47. But t was a very enjoyable game, and for our frst match we were all well satsfed wth the showng. U.S. GROUND, THURSDAY, JULY 26th, 95 at 630 DIVERS v. H.M.S. Pluto Dvers H.M.S. Pluto P.O. 9 dvng was carred out and supervsed by selected teams of dvng Offcers, Commssoned Gunners ex-dvers st Class and Dvers, all of whom -were volunteers. In 933, the results of the long seres of deep dves were promulgated n an Admralty Dvng Report, and the depth of 300 feet recognsed as feasble, under expert supervson by qualfed personnel, prncpally to assst n the salvage of sunken submarnes. Concdent wth the deep dvng experments, the Davs Submarne Escape Apparatus was evolved, tested and proved by Dvng Offcers and Dvers to depths of 8 fathoms and accepted nto H.M. Submarne servce as the approved submarne escape devce. On the ncepton of ths equpment nto H.M. Servce, the prmay polcy for submarne escape was modfed, tranng tanks were bult at H.M.S. " Dolphn ", 'Malta and Hong Kong, for submarne personnel to nculcate a self relant course of acton n the event of dsaster. In addton, a deep dvng unt was nsttuted n all submarne depot shps at home and abroad, supervsed by a qualfed deep dvng offcer, who was n charge of the specal deep dvng equpment approved for general use. Deep dvers were drafted to all statons, to form an experenced nucleus for deep dvng n emergency. The deep dvng offcer, always a commssoned gunner, was usually gunner of the shp and wth the addonal notaton " For Deep Dvng Dutes ", n the Navy Lst. These condtons obtaned up to, and n part, durng World War 2, as far as appontments permtted, but generally, the few specalst dvng offcers were exclusvely employed on tranng and operatons relatve to the enormous ncrease of dvng actvtes. Such operatons ncluded enemy submarne locaton and search, development and tranng of human torpedo and mdget submarne dvng personel, underwater swmmers and saboteurs, and, co-lnkng wth the sster servces, the tranng of all specal unts requred for underwater offensve operatons, usng specally prepared apparatus breathng oxygen, oxygen-ntrogen mxtures or ar as the occason demanded. These equpments were developed at hgh prorty by the Admralty expermental dvng unt, operatng under the superntendent of dvng, wth dvng offcers as admnstratve and techncal assstants, both ashore and afloat. At the end of the war, the whole dvng organsaton of the Royal Navy was merged nto the drector of underwater weapons' admnstraton, under the Captan, H.M.S. "Vernon ", thus severng all connectons wth H.M.S. " Excellent " whch dated back to the snkng of the ". Royal George," when Naval dvers frst commenced tranng n lason wth dvers of the Royal Engneers, for work on the sunken shp at Spthead. Ths stuaton left a small number of dvng offcers, ex:commssoned gunners n between " Wnd and water ", and the Admralty agreed, that untl suffcent commssoner gunners T.A.S. had qualfed for deep dvng offcers, they should reman n dvng appontments. RECENT LETTER RECEIVED BY A DIVER Dear Frend, Perhaps you have heard of me and my naton-wde campagn n the cause of Temperance. Each year for the. past 4 years I have made a tour of England and delvered a seres of lectures upon " THE EVILS OF DRINKING ". On these' tours I have been accompaned by my assstant, Norman Fortescue. Norman was a pathetc case, a young man of good famly and excellent background, whose lfe was runed by excessve ndulgence n Beer, Whsky, Gn and other Strong Drnk Norman would appear wth me at my lectures and st on the platform, droopng at the mouth and starng at the audence through bleary and bloodshot eyes, whlst I ponted out ths poor wretch as an example of what strong drnk could do. Unfortunately last wnter poor Norman ded. A mutual frend has gven me your name, and I wondered f you would care to accompany me on my Autumn tour to take poor Norman's place. lb Yours very sncerely, (Sgd.) J. McHAIGH

I MAKE MY FIRST DIVE Havng been nformed durng dscusson wth the only dver borne n our shp, that I should probably have to wat on the roster for approxmately fve years, t came as qute a shock to me when, three weeks later I was nformed that I was on draft to Whale Island to qualfy Dver 2nd Class. After volunteerng, t mght be thought that my reacton should have been anythng but shock. The shock was, however, merely the result of beng confronted wth a stuaton that I had mentally pgeon-holed for the next fve years. " Draft-chts," although taken as a matter of course n tme of war, cause qute a str n peace tme and many vared and colourful descrptons of what les ahead n the new sphere are hurled at the draftee from all sdes and free of charge. If I was a trfle apprehensve about takng up dvng n the frst place, my rnessmates certanly took great care to consoldate ths mental state. The great day for shftng my nautcal abode arrved and I duly repared wth kt bag and hammock to the sanctuary of Gunnery and Dvng, known as Whale Island, or H.M.S. Excellent. By way of ntroducton to ths renowned establshment, and probably as a salute to the fact that I was a Torpedoman, my frst nght-duty was to be sentry on the' pg-beat. As the Royal Navy s never very personal I gnored ths ncdent. Monday, the day I was due to commence course, arrved and revealed the fact that I had as classmates, two very weather beaten types wth two Good Conduct Badges, who struck me, a mere lad of nneteen, as beng much better equpped than myself for the task n hand. We were taken by our nstructor, who strangely enough dd not look too ferce, to the Sck Bay, where began the most metculous medcal examnaton I had up to that tme experenced. Havng survved ths medcal probe and been pronounced " Ft for Dvng," we were guded by our nstructor to the Dvng Shed, stuated at the Per Head. Gathered n ths not very mposng buldng was an odd assortment of men 'of all ages wearng beautfully clean sweaters who began to take stock of us n the best cattle-market manner. Whlst our nstructor reported to the Offcer-n-Charge, the result of our. successful ntervew wth the Medcal Offcer, I had tme to reflect upon the numerous pctures of dvers, n all sorts of predcaments, so ably panted for me by my late shpmates. Ths, together wth what my magnaton made of what I could see around me, dd nothng to boost my morale. Fortunately n my deepest depths of despondency over such stuatons I usually manage to console myself wth the thought that what others have done I can do also. Our nstructor's next step was to arrange us n front of an array of equpment, whch apparently we were expected to wear durng our submerged actvtes. He proceeded to gve us a detaled des- 9 REPORT ON THE FILM " THE FROGMEN " By Cambell Dxon The achevements of Brtsh and Italan frogmen are famous. The fact that feats as darng were performed by the Amercans s qute unknown to most of us, partly because the very exstence of the U.S. Underwater Demolton Teams was kept a. secret untl the war was over. The techncally mnded may lke to know that they were shot wth a new camera ndependent of both ar supply and electrc 'cables from the surface. The camera French by the way was ftted wth detachable wngs and vertcal rudder, and carred ts own lghtng set and ar supply. The operator gudng t wth one hand whlst swmmng wth the other, could sght hs target through the vew fnder, kck hs flppered feet, and gude hmself by tltng and bankng as he would a plane. The scenes so obtaned are as eere as anythng the screen has ever gven us. We see the frogmen roll wth the precson of machnes off a speedng launch, screened frofn enemy batteres by a smoke screen. We follow them as they paddle under water, breathng from the sets strapped to ther backs, we watch the placng of explosves, the whte rrupton of water, and at last the scoopng up of the surfaced adventurers by the returnng launch. More remarkable stll s an attack on a Japanese submarne base, told by cross cuttng from the Japanese, huntng lke terrers on the surface to the frogmen slowly gong about, ther work below. The clmax s a struggle between Amercans encased n rubber and bare sknned Japanese dvers sent down to kll them. Duellsts on the screen are usually as swft as hawks. Here batrachans n a dm green underworld, grapple to the death n slow moton. The effect s as frghtenng as a struggle n a dream. The flm was drected by Lloyd Bacon, roles played by Rchard Wdmark, Dana Andrews and Gary Merrll. No Salvaton Attendant to Dver, who s on the bottom at 300 feet : " Have you seen the lght?" Dver : " Yes! I have seen the lght t s out." Class n lecture room and the Instructor pcks up an ordnary poker. Shows t to the class sayng, " What s ths?" The answer forthcomng was "A poker." Instructor asked, " What s t used for?" Brght boy of the class repled, " For testng gauges." I8

crpton of all the bts and peces, ther functons and ther weghts, wth rather sordd reflectons on what was lkely to happen f they were not correctly assembled and adjusted. Fortunately ths brought us to lunch tme, when by way of a partng shot, our nstructor told us to muster n the dvng boat at the Per Head, ready for dvng at 35. Ths sounded lke hangng wthout a tral, for t seemed to me that I ought to have at least a month of theoretcal nstructon before attemptng to venture nto the depths. Contrary to custom I partook of a very small meal and then turned to my Dvng Manual, where among other thngs I read that "a dver should not descend after a heavy meal," at least I had acted correctly on ths pont. Fndng a mountan of matter n the Dvng Manual that I should absorb, I closed the Manual n dsgust and wth very mxed thoughts made my way to the Per Head. As I was the frst to arrve I clmbed nto the gently bobbng dvng boat and made a hurred survey of the equpment, endeavourng to femember what the Instructor had told us n the mornng. It was not long before my classmates joned me, and, t was wth pleasure that I noted from ther remarks that they were n the same mental state as myself, whch fact I thnk establshed a bond between us whch somehow gave me sprtual uplft. It was not long before our nstructor arrved wth half a dozen of the seasoned lookng types we had observed earler n the day. One of these, a Chef Petty Offcer, selected a dvng dress and wth the ad of two less senor dvers started to get dressed. Ths seemed a favourable opportunty to study the technque of gettng oneself nto ths cumbersome array of equpment. Alas, our observance of the experts was abruptly termnated by the nstructor tellng my two colleagues to get me dressed. So ths was t. At least I consoled myself, I am frst, whch s the poston I always lke to occupy under such crcumstances. My partners produced a sut, and I obtaned long woollen stockngs and a sweater whch fortunately were artcles requrng no further drectons as to ther use. Next came the sut whch the nstructor, who was by now gvng us hs undvded attenton, told me to pull on up to my hps, workng my feet at the same tme nto ther approprate places. Owng to the stffness of the sut ths was not as easy as t sounds, but was eventually accomplshed wth "the ad of my classmates, who were now to be known as "attendants". I was then told to stand up and hold my hands above my head whlst the attendants wth the ad of the "bb " of the sut pulled t up above my head, for me to dve down nsde and make myself as comfortable as possble, before nsertng one arm n a sleeve and the other up through the neck openng. After a great deal of pushng by me and shovng by the attendants and fnal roundng off wth a demonstraton by the nstructor, I eventually found myself n the sut. There followed boots, a cushon to take the weght of the helmet on the shoulders and fnally the 20 corselet onto whch the helmet screws. At ths juncture the nstructor called a halt n the proceedng and drected our attenton to the other dver he was -now referrng to me as a dver also who, he sad, would be watng on the bottom for us. Ths was to be our experence dve, he sad, he would therefore only tell us the bare essentals and not bother us wth a lot of detal. These bare essentals he duly outlned to us and llustrated the descent by orderng the other dver over the sde. We watched hm keenly as he stamped hs way to the ladder and swung hmself over the sde onto the ladder where he paused to have hs weghts and front glass put on before descendng the ladder and sltherng nto the water. Surely t couldn't be as easy as all that. He was bobbng easly n the water, makng hmself buoyant, the nstructor sad, my manpulatng hs outlet valve to keep just the rght amount of ar n hs sut, but we need not worry about that yet. Hs attendants then drew hm gently to a rope whch was referred to as the " shot rope," and wth a wave, of hs hand, whch seemed to elct the order " heave round the pump full speed," he dsappeared amd a cascade of foamng bubbles. At ths juncture two of the seasoned dvers took over the dutes of my attendant and proceeded to add an enormous amount of weght to my apparel and fnally announced to the nstructor that I was ready for the ladder, the latter gentleman ndcatng wth a floursh of hs 'hand that I was to get there. It was then that I realsed, n part anyway, the necessty for the rgd medcal examnaton. To walk seemed almost mpossble and to mantan a perpendcular atttude under the weght seemed equally mpossble, and I dared hardly admt to myself that I had more weght to come. Wth somebody lftng my second leg to clear the gunwhale of the boat, I eventually found myself on the ladder and havng my weghts put on; these -I remembered weghed forty pounds each. The c'ushon that would have been takng the chafe of the corselet had somehow become dsplaced to one sde and my shoulder felt as though t was holdng a house up. The sympathetc observance of my classmates unfortunately faled to ease my burden. In ths poston the nstructor ssued hs fnal nstructons, I was to go to the bottom of the ladder, get completely waterborne then let go, when the attendants would pull me to the shot rope whch I was to grp wth my knees and left hand, whlst my rght hand pushed n on my outlet valve spndle, n whch poston I should be nspected for leaks. Everythng beng all rght I should receve one pull on the lfe lne ndcatng that I could carry on down to the bottom where I should fnd the other dver. Apparently ths latter pont was nevtable as I was not told what to do f I ddn't fnd hm. After the other dver had fnshed wth me (I ddn't lke ths term) I was to press n on my outlet valve spndle and wat untl the ar gradually lfted the helmet and corselet off ;I,

to do anythng, and to made matters worse a trckle of water seemed to be pourng down my neck'. I could do absolutely nothng, alf I could hope was that the seasoned campagners would prove my savours wthout too much delay. I was not kept long n suspense. My head ht the ladder as I was pulled n, whereupon a seaboot planted tself n, the ar bubble where my seat should have been, and my head was yanked uppermost, from whch efforts I eventually found myself once more erect and somehow clear, of the water. Mountng the ladder assumed proportons of clmbng Everest, but eventually I flopped n a heap over the top rung where I was generally manhandled nto the boat, to have my face glass removed and behold the grnnng faces of everybody n the boat. ;At least I had rased a laugh, even f I ddn't much apprecate what t was all about, and furthermore my ntatng experence dve had been completed. Dear Readers, The response for cover desgns for our magazne was not too bad, but could have been a lot better. We have decded therefore that the competton shall reman open for a whle there may be entres from other parts of the globe than the one we are n, and t s hoped that we shall receve one or two attempts from " foregners " before the desgn s chosen. If you also have any further deas on ths matter do not hestate to forward same to our : Competton Secton. We also requre lots of materal for future ssues of the mazagne and for goodness sake don't be lazy, t won't take you more than a few mnutes to drop us a lne before steppng off wherever you may be. Not too many natve excuses, I too am a marred Secretary (male). Heard n the Dvng Boat Dver qualfyng carryng out stoppage drll, tappng the gauge nervously : Stop the dver, haul the pump to twenty feet." 23 my shoulders,-and fnally me, off the bottom, at whch juncture I was to use the spndle to keep my ascent at a nce smooth rate. Ths all sounded very nce, but I was very pleased when they screwed my front glass on, and I was able to make my way awkwardly and laborously down the ladder. I ddn't qute know how to enter the water but I observed the'' attendants had me well n hand so I just let go of everythng and tmade the pleasant dscovery that I came to no harm, n fact, I experenced a great relef as the weght was lfted from my shoulders. I was then dragged to the shot rope whch, after much gropng around, I managed to clutch hold of. The next thng I remembered was to press n on my spndle, but where s t, t seems to have shfted. Ah! There t s, an mpatent hand comes down over the gunwhale and places.my fngers securely on the spndle a pause and then a tug on the lfelne whch ndcates I can descend. Lettng the rope slther gently through my legs and fngers I gradually edge my way down the shot rope to the ncreased rhythm of the ar nrush as the pump s heaved round faster. Before'l have tme to analyse my re-actons to ths new experence, my feet ht the bottom and almost overbalance, and ndeed, only reman uprght by what must have been an almost superhuman effort. What happened from ths pont untl my arrval on the surface agan seems almost a nghtmare. I forgot what lttle the nstructor had seen ft to tell us, and.f aled almostly completely to understand what the other dver told me to do. Hs communcaton was ether by gestures, or grabbng hold of me, he would place hs 'helmet aganst mne and shout. At frst I could hardly see the other dver, but felt hm reach up and adjust my outlet valve, whch must have been very necessary, as I had the mpresson that I was about to return to the surface any moment. He then grasped my hand and pulled me forward nto almo'st a fallng atttude, whereupon I qute naturally put a foot forward and so found myself walkng n a somewhat cumbersome manner. Ths we contnued to do, frst n one drecton and then the other, sometmes I could see the other dver and sometmes the.strred-up mud would completely oblterate hm, but fortunately he never once let go that frm and comfortng grp untl he had guded me back to the shot rope, where he only dd so to put my hand on ths, my gude to the surface. He then reached up and usng my lfelne gave t a number of pulls to whch there seemed to be answerng pulls whereupon, by gestures n an upward drecton I thankfully realsed that he wanted me to go up. After a lot of searchng around I eventually found the spndle and pressed t n, the nose of escapng bubbles ceased, and after what seemed an eternty the helmet and corselet lfted from my shoulders and fnally I was on my way up. On arrval on the surface I seemed to shoot clear of the water and bang on to my face. Ar seemed to be everywhere, ncludng n my arms whch wouldn't bend to allow me 22

A NEW BREATHING APPARATUS When the late war ended the dvng world found tself n possesson of a very wde and vared collecton of breathng apparatus. Some were desgned for oxygen breathng and others for mxture breathng. One of the many problems whch faced the Superntendent of Dvng therefore was to produce a set whch would embody all the good features of the exstng materal and any new deas, and one whch could be, used for any purpose. It was naturally a very dffcult job to produce somethng new whch would satsfy all users, but after many trals and rude remarks we are at last n possesson of a set of whch (although there are one or two mnor faults to correct) the Navy can be justly proud. The sets at the moment are n short supply, but all the Dvng Schools are n possesson of a small number, and the clearance teams are equpped and of course the supply wll mprove wth tme. It s to be hoped that shps wll soon, be able to demand them to replace ther Salvus. Here are the detals of the set so that f you are not fortunate enough to do a course at one of the schools before usng the set you wll at least know a lttle about ts capabltes. The set can be used for sether swmmng, shallow water dvng or mxture dvng. The parts are as follows : THE-BREATHING BAG capacty eght ltres when the relef valve lfts at three nches W.G. THE CANISTER capacty lb. 0 ozs. of Patt. protosorb. Sngle cylnder capacty two cubc feet when charged to 20 Ats. Twn assemblycylnders for swmmng or shallow water dvng capacty two cubc feet each when charged to 20 Ats. Twn assembly cylnders for mxture dvng capacty 3.9 cubc feet when charged to 60 Atmospheres. A reducer whch can be used for ether shallow water dvng or mxture dvng. The reducer delvers down to the last 2 atmospheres. A quck release bag for carryng weghts, sphercal le.d weghts each weghng two lbs. Rubber tubes ftted wth H.P. connectons for connectng the cylnders to the breathng bag. and nserted n the small front pocket then beng connected to the rght sde of the breathng bag. The twn assembly two cubc feet cylnders are charged to 20 Ats., assembled n the large front pocket and connected to the left sde of the breathng bag. The weght pocket s assembled and as many weghts nserted as are requred by the dver. Delvery of oxygen s drect from the twn assembly cylnders to the breathng bag, whlst the sngle cylnder s held n reserve. Used n ths manner the set should last 2 mnutes as the twn cylnders each hold two cubc feet of oxygen and the dver wll use (spreadng hs energes over a perod) one ltre per mnute, one cubc foot equals 28 ltres (approx.). So our equaton s :- 2 x 2 x 28 equals 2 mnutes. TO RIG FOR SHALLOW WATER DIVING The only dfference from the above s that a reducer s nserted between the twn cylnders and the breathng bag. The reducer s set to delver a.5 ltre flow. The lfe of the set s now consderably reduced as the flow s.5, the reducer wll not delver the last 2 atmospheres and ten mnutes must be allowed for the use of the BY-PASS. So the " Lfe " of the set now becomes : ( 2 x 2 x 28 x 08 )-0 mnutes. equals 57.2 mns. (.5 x20 ) TO RIG FOR MIXTURE BREATHING The large twn assembly cylnders are charged to 60 atmospheres wth 60% oxygen 40% ntrogen and hooked on the back of the set. The reducer s connected to the cylnders and the reducer s n turn connected to the breathng bag by a rubber tube. The sngle cylnder s charged wth the same mxture to 20 atmospheres and assembled as before. The large. front pocket now becomes a bag for weghts. The reducer s set to a four ltre flow and the lfe of the set now becomes ( 2 x 3.9 x 28 x 48 )-0 mnutes equals 70 mnutes 4x 60) TO RIG FOR SWIMMING The cannster s flled and clamped nto the breathng bag. The snple two cubc foot cylnder s charged wth oxygen to.20 Ats

A.E.D.U. - " HOW IT ALL BEGAN " By Captan W. 0. Shelford, R.N. In the frst ssue, the late Commander Goodenough contrbuted an artcle on the A.E.D.U. and how t functons. It all sounds a very cold-blooded and hghly effcent pece of machnery and you may be nterested to know somethng of how t all started and the vcsstudes through whch t passed before t became a recognsed and effcent organsaton. The frst germ of the dea orgnated when the Admralty started the very secret development of human torpedoes, and some sort of dress and breathng apparatus had to be developed n a great hurry. A small party consstng of the Inspector of Dvng from Whale Island, myself, then D.S.E.A. Offcer Dolphn, two dvers and two D.S.E.A. nstructors used to travel up from Pompey and try out dresses and other gear n Sebe Gormans tanks: and pressure chambers. We all used to have a dp and then repar to the Vctora Hotel n Surbton to compare notes over pnts of " wallop ". There were more Professors and doctors round the tank top than dvers, and t gradually became appsarent that we had ht some, serous snags. When some of the party sat n slence n the corner of the bar leavng a small beer untouched we felt bound to ask for more help and more dvers. Step by step the party bult up untl we had two dvng offcers, two Naval doctors, Professor J. B. S. Haldane, F.R.S., wth hs team of assstants, four nstructors, ffteen dvers, two V.A.D.'s, a Wren, twelve goats, one Blly goat, some baby goats (later) and a multtude of rabbts, gunea pgs, and whte rats. At one tme we couldn't get any dvers so the " subjects " were twelve cooks and stewards. They dd remarkably well, and were most useful because they knew so lttle about dvng that f told to stay down for three hours they dd so, even f someone had forgotten to charge the oxygen bottles. Ths excellent set-up, backed by Sebe Gormans-Dunlop factores and the Natonal Insttute for Medcal Research at Hampstead, together wth other scentfc bodes n London acheved some really useful work. Every servce authorty brought ts problems to us, and we developed gear for human torpedoes, X-craft, fr'ogmen, submarne escape, amphbous tank escape, mne recovery partes, P-partes and landng craft obstructon clearance unts, to menton but a few. However ths excellent set-up could not contnue ndefntely once the war was over, and wth regret we had to consder shftng to a servce establshment. At ths pont, the T.A.S. department decded to wrest dvng from the gunnery boys. Everyone knows the story of how dvng frst came to Whale Island. How the Sappers brought dvng gear (Mr. Alexander Sebe's Patent Closed Dvng Dress) to salve the wreck of the " Royal George " n Spthead, and how the Navy provded a humpng party of matelots from " Excellent ". When t was all over Ther Lordshps decded ths 26.great nventon would be of use n the Navy and asked the Sappers to tran volunteers from " Excellent's " workng party on the spot. Hence all dvng came to rest on the " Island ". I'm afrad " Vernon " cannot clam anythng so' romantcally hstorc, because t was a plan paper wangle n the Admralty. The offcal excuse was the vast amount of dvng gear requred for mne recovery and clearance n future hostltes. The change came about soon after D-day when very large numbtrs of Brtsh and Alled P-partes were beng traned. A great deal of equpment was pourng out of the dvng factores to supply them. A base was essental where all these actvtes could be centralsed and Brxham n Devon appeared to offer facltes. Brxham had been used as an nvason base and houses, hotels and holday camps were stll under requston, whle stores, pers, and landng craft " hands " were avalable for boat work and dvng tranng. Fshng trawlers and motor yachts were also avalable for use. Here then Mr. Torpedo-man decded to set up what was to be a Central Dvng School, startng wth P-partes and other shallow water dvers, gradually buldng up tll, accordng to the Admralty dea, we were to have large _whte buldngs, lawns and parade grounds. Here, all the dvers would attend dvsons fully dressed, and after Colours and Prayers would double away smartly to ther respectve, shot ropes. However t was not to be, and although Brxham made an excellent base for tranng P-partes on Mxtures and Cder, the expermental sde was never able to expand there. Our offce was n a delghtful cottage on top of the clff overlookng Torbay. S. -of D. shared the best bedroom wth the Wren Secretary, but t was unfortunately ftted out as an offce. Downstars the Superntendent of Dvng and " Chads " who had been whsked away from Whale Island, tred to sort out where they were and to co-ordnate the tranng. The Dvng Room made a good museum wth captured enemy gear festooned about the furnture whle the bathroom and ktchen made an effectve lab and workshop. The back garden grew a flourshng crop of helum cylnders. At frst the expermental dvng gear was stowed n the garage, but later we won a moored M.L. as a floatng store and dvng platform, wth a small requstoned motor cruser as a tender. A telephone crcut was rgged so that S. of D. could watch from hs wndow for trawlers returnng wth ther.gear snagged, and could send Chads to offer hs servces for the prce of some fresh fsh n scallops. There were 300 steps up from the harbour to the offce, but the Brxharn Yacht Club was convenently placed as a frst stop wth safety and at dnner tme Dvng Offcers could be seen exercsng ther elbows at ther frst stop. 27
