TREASURER'S NOTES I should lke to thank all subscrbers for ther loyal support. In spte of the fact that staff dffcultes have only made t possble to produce one ssue ths year, subscrptons have been sent n, almost as usual. 4 stunned or dead. Scores of fsh were collected by the boats. An hour later the Tekong Islanders joned the fsh hunt, dozens of natve prahus and koeks appeared from nowhere and fsh was the menu that nght for mles around. On nspecton the man part of the jetty was found to be completely mssng and a 50 foot crater stll remans to tell the tale. By LIEUT. A. SAGAR, R.N.V.R. OBSERVATIONS FROM AMERICA By LT. CDR. W. FILER Coverng approxmately 20,000 mles n just over four weeks leaves one lttle tme to study the way of lfe of the people occupyng the country vsted. A few of the mpressons ganed durng ths tour may, however, be of nterest, partcularly to those who have not been fortunate enough to vst Amerca to gan frst hand mpressons. Flyng the Atlantc nstead of ploughng through t was qute a new experence and to expect the four engnes of the 70-seater Super Constellaton to keep turnng for hours on end seemed to be askng too much. The strong head wnds encountered at hgh alttudes caused our plot to keep down close to the upper cloud base whch resulted n qute a bumpy trp, as we passed through angry anvl-shaped mnor cloud formatons stckng out above the general level. A flash of lghtnng whch lcked ts way down the length of the fuselage made me thnk hurredly about the locaton of the emergency exts and caused much crossng of fngers. The, exhaust ppes from the engnes glowng red hot n the darkness, the ntense purple flames dartng out, ddn't exactly nspre confdence, but fortunately seemed to do no more harm than to scorch the engne cowlng and leadng edge of the wng. We were mpressed durng our vst by the metculous care our Amercan hosts took when makng ntroductons, and on one occason whlst watng for a farly large gatherng to assemble, our excellent lason offcer who was makng the ntroductons for the beneft of each new arrval, concluded by ntroducng a late-comer to thrty other offcers wth the approprate nterchange of name and rank, accurately and wthout falterng. Although most of our travellng was by ar, all the short journeys were by car, and even the utltaran naval vehcles were beautful devces wth latest streamlnng, hydromatc gear selecton, rados, heatng, etc., and would all take sx passengers n comfort. Whlst beng drven back to our hotel from the naval gun factory one day, the drver told me that 95% of the ratngs own ther own cars, whch gves some dea of ther standard of lvng. The car parkng problem n the States, and n Washngton n partcular, s so acute that many people get up early n the mornng and drve nto the cty to secure a place to park, and then go and have breakfast whlst watng for the day's work to begn. A few people try to overcome ths problem by havng a Brtsh baby car for cty 5 JAPANESE DUMP BLOWN UP OFF SINGAPORE There are many and vared jobs whch come under the rather obtuse ttle of " Clearng Dvng," and t was all n the day's work when the Far East Clearance Dvng Team under Leutenant E. Gash, R.N., were called n to deal wth over 50 tons of Japanese bombs dumped nto the sea by surrenderng Japanese troops n August, Rangng from K.G. many were Hgh Explosve wth a far sprnklng of phosphorous bombs and ant-personnel, they lay under and around Ayer Samak Jetty. Some over 8 feet n length were sunk n the mud up to ther tals, all were covered wth marne growth and fused together wth rust. At a rough estmate t w a s thought that over bombs lay watng untl someone moved them or they moved of ther own volton due to crystallzaton or carelessness on the part of some natve. A damaged phosphorous bomb f set on fre could easly set the whole dump off. It was decded to countermne. Durng the tme needed The exploson seen from 2 mles away, a 2,000 ft. to prepare the dump, t column of water, whte smoke s seen from the was necessary for the C.D. phosphorous bombs. team to lve and sleep n the jungle only Leut. Gash had a mosquto net and there were eght very sore and wser men n the mornng. About 1,000 Islanders lvng n Ayer. Samak on the eastern end of Tekong left ther homes at 6 a.m. on 14th May, 1953, The mltary jetty at Ayer Samak where the bombs were dumped had an ar of eerness and auet. Came Then.. WHOOF.. The waters around the Island turned chocolate colour and twenty mnutes later the Motor Fshng Vessel manned by the Fleet C.D. Team nosed ther way carefully towards the jetty. As the boats drew closer to land, thousands of fsh were seen floatng on the surface, 4

work, but the Amercan habt of shuntng ther cars nto and out of lne of cars parked bumper to bumper makes the Brtsh baby look dog-eared n a very short space of tme. Amercan car desgners have produced so many dfferent models n the hstory of ther ndustry that the man dfference between new models s some small gmmck to catch or appeal to the lades. Although the Amercan husband flls the purse, he certanly does not hold the purse strngs, and Amercan car desgn, as well as the desgn of almost everythng else, s entrely nfluenced by the pecular whms of the real buyer. It took some tme for the Englsh members of the party to adjust themselves to the ntense central heatng, and I know that for the frst week or so I found t necessary to go out of doors from tme to tme to make sure that I was breathng. It was the sort of heat that really ht you when you entered a buldng and the temperature seemed to be as hgh n the man lne ralway staton as t dd n a prvate house. `0,1 cs.t6 o e- Vk Don't fool about Knocker 6 In Washngton we went to see the latest entertanment nventon called " Cnerama." Ths s somethng whch ousts Hollywood's broad screens, 3-D, etc., and conssts of three enormous screens runnng down two sdes and across the front of the audtorum wth three separate projectors, projectng each on to one sde of ths ggantc screen. Ths s coupled wth a thng called stereophonc sound. The man feature of Cnerama s that the audence s gven the sensaton of actually beng n the pcture and t was admtted by some members of our party that after they had watched a travelogue of Amerca, through the eyes of a plot of an arcraft, they felt qute ar-sck. Generally, thngs lke hamburgers, steaks, omelettes, etc., are cooked on an open hotplate n full vew of the customer. Eggs can be ordered " sunny sde up," " over easy " or " over well done." Steaks really were the sze of a dnner plate and two nches thck, and could be ordered well done, " medum " or " rare." A pleasant and delcous dscovery beng that you can stll eat the steak even though you have somewhat apprehensvely ordered a " raw " one. Tea s defntely not to Brtsh taste and s normally made by dunkng a tea bag n hot water.. Coffee s avalable almost everywhere and at any tme, and s consumed wth about the same regularty as tea n ths country. Snce, n spte of Town and Country Planners, the Englshman's home s stll hs castle, he usually has a wall or hedge round t. The Amercans obvously don't feel the needs for barrers of ths sort and apart from a few places n the town and ctes, ther gardens and holdngs possess no vsble boundary. It was, n fact, mpled that to buld a hgh wall round your house was the sort of thng that gets Senator McCarthy on your tal. It seems strange to Englsh eyes to see brght neon sgns outsde churches, encouragng people to come n, but ther churches are well attended and some of our party were fortunate enough to be there when Presdent Esenhower attended the local church near to our hotel at Washngton. Almost everythng was obtanable from a slot machne n the States, numerous brands of chocolate, a varety of ce-creams of dfferent flavours, frut juces n complcated machnes whch can supply any mxture of flavours you desre. It was found that by judcous manpulaton of the knobs on the more complcated machnes we could cause the most frghtful thngs to happen nsde. " Coke " machnes are everywhere and hot coffee wth or wthout sugar or cream can be obtaned from slot machnes n bus statons, arports, etc. Cotton towels are not provded n the majorty of publc washngplaces and hand dryng s done wth hot ar machnes or paper towels. Although we never managed to attend one, we were ntrgued by the open-ar cnemas. A colossal concrete screen s bult n an open space whch s dotted wth pck-up ponts for headphones. The customer drves up alongsde the pck-up pont, takes the headphones nto the car and sts back and enjoys the flm. 7

From Fsherman's Walk we had a very good vew of the notorous Alcatraz Island, and were able to dentfy the guards, wth the ad of a " nckel a tme " telescope. Fsherman's Walk s a sea food paradse. Crabs, abalones, prawns and longusters (lobsters ftted wth antennae nstead of pncers) are on sale n every other shop. Most of them stll alve and dsplayed n tanks so that the customer can select the one he wants and have t cooked. These shell fsh are qute the bggest I have seen and much larger than the " Devonport monsters of Barnpool." We found that Hawa was the exact place that we had read about. The clmate was perfect and underwater swmmng spced wth a lttle underwater photography and fshng was sheer joy. Vsblty underwater was anythng from 50 to 100 feet, and an hour's mmerson merely made you anxous for more. As n all the places we vsted we saw very lttle of the local lfe n the daytme as we were nvolved wth ether con fernces, dscussons or demonstratons, and usually had to rely on one or two free evenngs to explore. In ths way we covered the famous Wakk beach area at Honolulu and even became honorary members of the Outrggers Canoe Club whch s run by Duke Kahanamoku, a former Olympc swmmng champon and a Prnce of Hawaan Royal blood. One of the most outstandng memores of Hawa s of the banyan tree standng n the grounds of the Royal Hawaan Hotel. Ths enormous tree has a man trunk of fttng proporton to ts overall sze and then fve other trunks of smlar dmensons spaced equdstantly at about half radus from the man trunk to the outer frnge of ts huge umbrella lke branches. These addtonal trunks have grown out of the branches and back nto the ground. Our send off from Hawa was qute somethng and really tradtonal. All the offcers of the Unt we were vstng and ther wves came to see us off at the arport, and the wves proceeded to decorate us wth garlands (les) accompaned by a tradtonal embrace and wth much camera clckng. Although ths was secretly apprecated, we were n qute a hurry to get nto the arcraft and hde our red faces. On two or three occasons we spent the day aboard Amercan shps. We were very mpressed by the standard of ther entertanng and the qute extraordnary cleanlness of the shp. The handlng of these shps was very good by any standards and a surprsng thng was that the Commandng Offcers of these smaller shps held the curous rank of Temporary Leutenant or Leutenant Commander Confrmed Chef Petty Offcer. Ths seems to be a Government wangle whereby these people leave the servce on C.P.O.'s penson and not on the Lt. Comdr's. Perhaps when you get Amercan scales of pay durng your actve servce lfe ths s not of any great sgnfcance. In concluson, I would say that everythng the Amercans dd was done on a fabulous scale wth lttle or no expense spared to acheve the ultmate object. BOMB AND MINE DISPOSAL NOTES Speakng, or should I say "blowng" for ourselves, we have, durng the last 20 months, found lfe qute nterestng, sometmes arduous, but never dull. The varety of mssles, and projectles has exceeded anythng shown n the book. Yes, we have had a " ktchen stove "! The hghlght of 1953 was an ncdent at Saltdean, Sussex, when we were presented wth TWO German C.Q's lyng wthn 150 yards of each other. The lowlght was a " flyng " expedton (by Fleet Ar Arm transport) to Jersey Channel Isle by " The Bandt " and " Bluey " to deal wth a German mne. The two remember lttle about the mne, but have vague recollectons of galy (and wth " reckless abandon ") jumpng down 200 feet of sheer clff, after enjoyng a wonderful lunch gven by the local dgntary. " Bluey " Honour carred the " dets "; " Bandt," C-D, crafty-lke, bounded.,50 yards "astern." The mne, deeply bured n bounder rock, was rather naccessble, and the two had to strp off and swm round some rocks. (Bluey, of course, lost hs underpants!). However, ths ddn't worry them a great deal. Gettng back and scramblng up that clff, after lghtng a length of safety fuse certanly dd. Nuff sad! The excellent lason wth Army Bomb Dsposal has been strengthened and n ths respect we should lke to offer our best wshes for the comng year to the local B.D. Troop, (No. 2 Troop) Royal Engneers at Fort Wdley, commanded by Captan R. Hough, G.M., 9 Clearance Dvng responsbltes for Command Bomb and Mne Dsposal commenced early n 1953, wth the appontment of Com'd Bosun S. Curre-Davs at Portsmouth. Later followed by smlar appontments for Senor Commssoned Gunner J. Rae and Commssoned Gunner S. Honour to the Nore and Plymouth Commands. More recently Commssoned Gunner (TAS) C. Lawrence has been apponted Medterranean Fleet B. & M.D.O. and now we are pleased to hear of the appontment of Senor Commssoned Bosun P. J. Messervy as Command B. & M.D.O. Scotland. We wsh hm luck and a good bag.

R.E., and also to our frends at Army B.D. School, Broadbrdge Heath (Leut. Colonel G. Slade, R.E.). Most Clearance Dvers look upon " B.B. " as ther ancestral home. Stop press! Congratulatons to Major " Ray" Ballard on hs promoton. Fnally a word about our " lads." We wsh A.Bs Bll Sadler and Wll Wlcox the best of luck n the Far East team. Congratulatons to you both on passng for Leadng Seaman. Petty Offcer B. Dllstone wll shortly be on hg way to Canada; we wsh hm luck n hs new venture. We haven't seen much of P.O. " Bungy " Edwards or P.O. " Soapy " Watson at Devonport and Chatham, but are sure that they are keepng our flag flyng n those " foregn parts." And so all the very best to " Mne Maskers " and " Bomb Busters " from our present team, Leadng Seaman " Taff " Jones; Leadng Sto. " Terry " O'Nel and the ncorrgble arch fend A.B. Jm Rushton. Oh! and count me n on ths too S.G.C.D. THE STRANGER WORE A NOSECLIP He rode down the Erth Jetty, a quet confdent fgure mounted on a Post Offce push-bke. He carred no kt ths character, but from hs hps hung two well oled nose clps. He leapt nto the boat, landng gracefully on feet encased n dusty but well cut " pusser's " sea boots. A wave of hs rght hand enclosed n a small black glove; we: moved. The new hand from the C.D. Branch had joned. A warm welcome awated hm. On the gangway, clad n unwashed blue jeans and ragged hat, stood Mac, the foreman of the " Annet Strp," and cradled n Mac's arms was a cox's gun, rust showng under the bleak Thames sky. The bowman wth a quck flck of hs wrst secured and faded. Runnng a practsed eye over the set-up, the loaded " U.B.A.'s " and the ples of empty " proto " tns, the character clmbed aboard. The foreman took a last lngerng pull, nonchalantly tossed away the Dettol bottle, and spoke : " New huh! Can you use a thousand foot jackstay?" The character casually spat out a mouthful of " proto ", sad, " Yep," and strolled for'd to the madhouse. Here he was met by te boys!!!??? a truly unlkely and unlkeable bunch. The boys were mostly clad n well-worn loan clothng overalls over greysh woollen garments. Once agan the character's eyes flckered, checkng the escape routes; there were none. Here though a hard unpleasant character sauntered n carryng a " gash " bucket full of pot-mess. In one movement the boys grabbed a drty plate apece and an equally drty spoon, and got themselves outsde t. Pattng a well flled stomach, the character drew hmself to hs feet. " Fellas," he sad, " Glad to be here." At ths a pack of cards appeared. "Any takers?" he sad. The boys moved n jnglng ther ball weghts. Peace had come to. the "Annet Strp." The C.D.1 had joned. 10 The answer to a fsherman's prayer,... Enchantng GL,YNIS JOHNS plays the dual role of a mermad and a prm sports mstress n Betty Box's new Techncolor comedy, "MAD ABOUT MEN." Hate she s seen as Mranda an amorous mermad who bewtches every young man wthn eye-catchng dstance of her seductve charms. Stll by IAN MAYES

BOMB IN A BUCKET Ths s only a story any smlarty between characters and persons lvng or dead (mostly dead) s delberate and ntentonal. In answer to an agtated, agonsed, and aggravated call, " The Bandt," "Pusser," "Bll" and " Wll " found themselves on the foredeck of a dredger. What had prevously been reported as a 50 ton bomb 100 yards long by 50 feet n dameter, was n fact a very ordnary German 250 Kg bured nose down n a dredger's bucket full of the slmest, sludgest, smellest, blackest mud you ever saw. The mssle, from henceforth known as the "objectle" was found to be armed wth a Nos. 17 and 50 fuse and n spte of ts sordd mserable envronment, obvously had to be treated wth respect. After excavatng half a ton of the " flthy stuff," access was ganed to the fuses, whch were then dealt wth much to the amusement of Bll and Wll who were holdng on to the " Bandt's " ankles whlst the latter, " head down " n the bucket, soon fervently wshed that the objectle wo.'d go off and clear the ar a bt! Once the teeth had been drawn the remander of the task seemed an easy one. A small hand operated crane was fortunately (dd I say fortunately?) postoned on a gantry drectly over the bucket and the job of stroppng and lftng the objectle seemed comparatvely smple. Pusser (" I can drve anythng ") volunteered as crane drver and soon created an mpresson of confdent effcency by cleverly lowerng the crane hook straght on to the Bandt's " bone." The objectle was eventually stropped and at the order " host s'owly " t shot up n the ar for a heght of 15 feet, dd a 90 degree turn to starboard, traversed across to port and fnally lowered tself nto the bucket agan. A plea of " Take t easy ths tme " produced an encore, wth the bomb swngng precarously on the strop whch had slpped from centre. It became more than suspcously apparent that " Pusser " was applyng the old prncple of " tral and error " n hs efforts to master the crane, and t was small consolaton to hear a cheerful " Sorry, wrong knob " wth the objectle flyng up and down lke a " yo-yo." After a few mnutes t also became obvous that our mechancal genus was more ntent on explorng the varous combnatons of gears, pawls, brakes and handwheels than postonng the bomb. "Pusser " perched spder-lke on the gantry was really enjoyng hmself, and ganng confdence wth every jerk and swng. Once havng got the dea of the thng he proceeded to gve a remarkable practcal dsplay of Newton's laws of moton. However, durng a bref moment, when "Pusser " by mstake let the bomb touch the deck, " Bll " had the presence of mnd to unhook. Fnally, an nshore mnesweeper based nearby very kndly came to the rescue and the bomb was soon on ts way to open water where t was demolshed. S.G.C-D ADMIRALTY EXPERIMENTAL DIVING UNIT Much has happened snce the last ssue of the Dvng Magazne. A few changes have occurred n the staff, Leut. Border eventually took over Deputy S. of D.'s char from Leut-Comdr. Fler. Surg.- Leut. Cradock-Watson releved Surg.-Leut. Holls, who s now endeavourng to make a name for hmself n the outsde world. In the Lab. we have been joned by Mr. Taylor and Mr. Walker. Mr. Walker

HEARD IN THE DIVING SCHOOL A certan Dvng Offcer : Owng to Shallow Water Dves attanng such a tremendously hgh standard, D.3's and C.D.3's wll have to look to ther laurels. More dvers are requred to volunteer for the Far East?! THE PEE LITTLE THRIGS (A FAIRY STORY BY COLONEL STUPNAG) In the happy days when there was no harcty of scam, and when port ncks were a chopple apece, there lved an old ladyputher mg (n sother words a wow) and her see thruns. Whatever happened to the pgs' old pan s mstwat of a summary. Well, one year the acorn throp craled, and old pady lg had one teck of 'a hme youngng her feedsters. There was a swrth of dll too, as garble wern't puttng much stancy fuff n ther peepage. As a result, she reluctantly bold her toys thy'd have to feek ther own serchuns. So, amd towng flears and sevvy hobs, each gve hs nuther a bg mug, and the pee lttle thrgs set out on ther wepparate says. Let's follow Turly Cal, the purst lttle thrg, shall we? He hadn't gone ferry var when he enmannered a nce lookng count, carryng a strundle of baw, whch was yery. yellow. " Meeze, Mr. Plan," sad the pttle lg, " Wll you gve me that haw to buld me a straws?" (numb serve, beleve me). The man was jghearted Bo, tho', and bllngly wave hm the gundle, wth whch the pttle lg cott hmself a pretty bultage. No fooner was the house snshed, than who should dock on the front nore than a werrble tulf. " Pttle lg, pttle lg," he sa'd n a faked venner toyce, " May I come n and hee your stty proam?" " Thoa, thoa, a nowsand tmes thoa, not by the chars on my hnny pn hn," ped the lttle sg. " Then I'll bluff and I'll duff, and I'll hoe your blouse pown," ped the so werrble tulf. And wth that he chuffed up hs peeks, blew the smth to housereens, sat down to a dne fnner of roast sow and pggerkraut. What a pgnomnous end to a peet lttle swg! Edtor's note Not Funny? Well read t out aloud. 15 s no new-corner to A.E.D.U.: he was prevously on the strength but left at the request of the Government for a two year holday n unform. Mr. Fsher has joned the capable staff n the Workshop. One of the man events ths year was the move of A.E.D.U. nto a new buldng; ths was only just n tme, extensons to the Vernon pggery were begnnng to worry us, many more extensons and the pggery would have become an annexe to A.E.D.U. Your pork would then have probably come from pgs that had ded of " bends." The new buldng s an mprovement over the old but unfortunately we have less space and there s no room for our museum. We have had to share our offces wth dvng models. There s a possblty that we wll be able to obtan a room at a later date for use solely as a museum. Acceptance trals of the new M.R.S. have been completed wth very lttle adverse crtcsm, mnor modfcatons are beng ntroduced and the next step wll be a tral order. We are now pressng on wth the converson of M.R.S. for standard dvng. Progress s beng made wth C.A.B.A., we have what we thnk a good, f somewhat unusual harness, unfortnately we are beng held up for cylnders. B.I.B.S. and S.E.B.A. have passed out of our hands and are now n producton. The Observaton Chamber faled the test at N.C.R.E. and had to be returned to the makers for strengthenng; t s hoped that t wll be back at N.C.R.E. for test about the end of November. The artcle by B.F. (last ssue) has strred us nto acton on the queston of underclothes for dvers. Some trals were carred out last wnter and further trals wll be carred out durng the comng months, perhaps the answer we arrve at wll not be n accord wth the standards lad down by B.F., but I am sure t wll be of value to dvers n general. We are also nvestgatng gloves and we thnk we are nearng a soluton to ths knotty problem. H.M.S. Reclam s carryng out deep dvng trals at Gbraltar; t s hoped that as a result of these trals the practcal workng depth on oxy-helum wll be ncreased: also the tme on the bottom. These trals are also trals of the bulk oxy-helum storage system whch was nstalled durng her last reft. The Superntendent of Dvng recently had a tour of Europe, vstng centres connected wth dvng n France, Italy, Germany and Scandnava. A lot of nterestng nformaton was obtaned, btt on the whole ths trp showed we, have no reason to be serously dssatsfed wth our own progress. Varous other projects are under way, but lttle can be sad about them at present. 14

LATEST NEWS FROM TOBERMORY Methought I saw a thousand fearful wrecks A thousand men that fshes gnaw'd upon ; Wedges of gold, great anchors, heaps of pearl, Inestmable stones, unvalued jewels All scatter'd n the bottom of the sea. Today we are pleased to see Commander Crabb back n the Dvng School and an ntervew wth hm gleaned the followng up-to-date report on Tobermory Bay. Readers wll be able to lnk up ths account wth the recent artcle by Lt.-Comdr. Crawford. Two 167 cubc foot capacty desel compressors wth a 10ft. by 4ft. ar recever were used to supply the ar lft. These were postoned n the s.s. Ardchattan where a crane moved the ar lft accordng to the dver's nstructons. All slt and fndngs came va the ar lft to large sftng grds and then nto a 400 ton hopper alongsde. Work commenced on 17th August, 1954, the recovery vessel secured to fve moorngs n the poston recommended by Lt.-Comdr. Crawford's last exploraton. 'Lance probes were used powered by Denns traler pump and soon evdence was found to show that here lay the elusve San Juan. Now the real task began as the eght nch dameter ar lft tore nto the 20 feet of slt over the wreck. Before long the eager watchers made dscovery of countless portons of shp's tmber whch when dry looked black and worm eaten, but on nspecton proved to be as hard as grante ; human, partly fosslsed bones also came to lght and knfe and sword remans, and a very mportant fnd was the neck of a knfe sheath. To prove that t wasn't an entrely " dry shp " two crude glass wne flagon bottoms turned up, and last of all a quantty of lead sheetng used n those days for Damage Control, or t may have been part of the cargo. Ths was excellent progress, but a major snag soon reared ts very ugly head; t became apparent that when the harbour wall and jettes were constructed a vast amount of rock had accumulated over the sea bed and whle approxmately twenty feet of slt lay over the wreck, the frst twelve feet contaned a defnte layer of rocks whch damaged and blocked up the arlft. It was obvous work must cease and a new method found to rd the area of stones often up to two feet across. Ths dffculty has n fact stopped work untl next sprng, and meanwhle a shp s requred for charter to remove by grabs the offendng rock layer. Exctement occurred, however, when Dver Sdney Knowles (" Baron ") whle workng n a deep hole, felt a nudge from behnd hm and was suddenly pushed flat on to hs face, trapped by a huge rock; to complcate the danger, hard clay fell nto the hole and completely bured hm nnety- feet below the surface. Hs frend, Terry 16 Yatton, proceeded under very dffcult condtons, to extract Knowles and after a long struggle, cleared the boulder, but was unable to drag the dver out by hs feet. It was necessary to use the ar lft to excavate the heavy mass of clay over the dver, a very dangerous procedure, then by loosenng hs bootlaces Yatton managed to drag the man clear of hs boots and the stcky clay. Ex-Petty Offcer Grbbon, now warehouse and transport manager at Lews's, whle on holday volunteered to help, and on hs very frst dve contracted a bend n hs shoulder. The poor manager had to undergo recompresson at 10 p.m. one nght when he was put down wth the ad of ol lamps and remaned down for three long hours. Thanks are due to Sebe Gorman & Co. for ther loan of dvng equpment, and to Broome and Wade for ther loan of compressors. Rolex also allowed fve watches to be usefully employed underwater. Commander Crabb's man summary of the operaton s that vtal progress has been made, the major dffcultes solved, and after the grabs have done ther part he s anxous to get down and fnd the real, long-hdden secrets of the San Juan. By LIEUT. A. SAGAR Commander L. K. P. Crabb, O.B.E., G.M., R.N. 17

DIVER'S BOOKSHELF By JAMES BENSON I begn ths column wth an apology. In the revew of Epcs of Salvage by Davd Masters, prnted n the Aprl-June ssue of 1953, I wrote : " I know of one defnte naccuracy n the, ) text." Inqures have snce proved that the nformaton on whch I based ths statement was tself naccurate and I unreservedly wthdraw my remark and apologse to Mr. Masters for any damage t may have done to hs professonal reputaton. Ths tme I want to wrte prncpally about two books. One concerns the Navy, the other the R.A.F. One s qute recent, the other was publshed n early One s very much a " popular " book, the other s a serous-mnded bography. Reach for the Sky, by Paul Brckhll (Collns: 16s.) s the lfe story of Douglas Bader, the legless and legendary Battle of Brtan Ace. Ths s the " popular " book, whch, n the several months snce t has been on the market, has acheved a fantastc sale. Its author wll be known to many of you through hs earler successes : The Great Escape, The Dam Busters, Escape or De. Hs s the sort of wrtng for whch the descrpton " popular " can never be anythng but a supreme complment. Whether your favourte author s Dostoevsky or Peter Cheyney, you wll fnd n Brckhll's superb technque a book that wll bear comparson by almost any standards wth the leadng bographes and adventure stores of the last or any other war. My only qualms n revewng ths book are that I am probably wastng the tme of nearly all of you, for there cannot be many homes or mess-decks nto whch ths story has not penetrated n book or seral form. But for the others among you let me stress that the key-note of ths whole story s qute planly and smply one man's courage. It s the remarkable degree to whch ths qualty s found n Douglas Bader that makes me gve prde of place n ths column to a book that has absolutely nothng to do wth dvng and no connecton even wth the sea. For courage s somethng we can all comprehend, even though most of us can only pretend to t f at all to a very lmted extent. It s mpossble n the matter of a few lnes to depct the " guts," the " joe-de-vvre " and the " bloody-mndedness" that went to make up the Bader brand of courage. For Bader had lost both legs n an ar crash from whch he should have ded and yet he was always cheerful, nwardly as well as outwardly ; was the sort of awkward customer who refused to use a par of stcks, operated the pedals of a car wth one artfcal leg and the ferrule-end of an umbrella, and flew solo and ndulged n trck landngs completely aganst orders; recognsed no 19 18

lmtatons, dscplnary or physcal, upon hs way of lvng hs lfe; and turned out to be a fghtng fghter-plot of the frst order. All wth no legs. And bear n mnd that he had more than the straghtforward enemy of " danger " to combat. Hs predcament meant that he had to contend wth that much more slppery antagonst, supreme dscomfort often vergng upon physcal agony. Nght after nght he would have to bnd the raw flesh on hs overworked stumps wth stckngplaster. And after that, what dd danger matter? Here, then, s a book that wll brng lumps to the hardest throats. It slows up towards the end and you wll be glad that t does, for the tenson s kllng. My second book s also a bography : Max Horton and The Western Approaches by Rear-Admral W. S. Chalmers (Hodder & Stoughton : 16s.) Ths s the story of the man who, for my money, has had no equal as a fghtng admral snce Nelson. Max Horton was loved almost worshpped by the Submarne Servce n the recent war, and t s no slght on subsequent Admrals Submarnes to say that hs name was stll beng spoken of wth reverence years after he had moved from " boats " to take up the appontment of C. n C., Western Approaches. Here s a book on an nfntely wder canvas than the Bader lfestory. Max Horton changed the course of the war many would say FR,OtttNZ Isa ARe e,n-t ttco.was' L unk-rev-,,c;,, r,414a1- t.-1kes 1/0 `.) 5 SOU' \RWIRE SU Tkfst_S 7 20 that more than any other person he had won t.. One of the greatest of the 1914 war's submarne commanders, he had frst of all organsed our own Submarne Servce n the early years of the Second World War to hs own ruthless standards of effcency, only to swtch overnght to the role of chef U-Boat destroyer. Those who had known hm well n submarnes were not n the slghtest surprsed when hs determned methods succeeded. Rear-Admral Chalmers has done an excellent job hstorcally wth what must have been a very dffcult subject. But I cannot help feelng that the book lacks the Horton personalty. I only had the good fortune and great honour to meet Sr Max once, but I came for some short tme n contact wth the aura that surrounded hs name n submarne flotllas from Scotland to Sngapore. I should lke to have read more about submarnes, partcularly n World War One, because I am convnced that the whole Max Horton phlosophy stemmed from ths branch of the Servce. I should have lked more anecdotes, even at the rsk of a few of them beng apocryphal. But please do not take these ponts as crtcsm of any substance. For ths s a magnfcent book. And f, as ts ttle suggests, t s prncpally concerned wth the Western Approaches perod of Admral Horton's career, s t not a magnfcent trbute to " the world's greatest submarner " that hs bographer should be able to create such an epc story whle keepng Sr Max's submarne actvtes n ther rghtful secondary poston rghtful, that s, when consdered n terms of the contrbuton made by ths great man to the present securty and well-beng of hs country. I have three dvng books to whch I want to gve a bref menton. Almost nevtably they are largely, f not entrely, concerned wth selfcontaned operatons n warm waters. In order of my personal preference they are To Hdden Depths by Captan Phlppe Tallez (Kmber : 16s.) ; Lady Wth A Spear by Eugene Clark (Henemann : 12s. 6d.) ; and Treasure Dvng Holdays by Jane and Barney Crle (Collns: 18s.) I prefer the frst of these because, as well as beng most competently and at tmes beautfully wrtten, t deals wth dvng of the hghest professonal calbre. Tallez s a close assocate of and ranks wth Cousteau, both as dver and wrter. No further recommendaton should be needed. Eugene Clark's book ncludes a wealth of underwater scentfc nvestgaton, whle the carefree dvng lfe permtted to the Crles wll doubtless dangle the restrctons of the Naval Dscplne Act before a good many eyes. And f thngs really are gettng you down and even f they're not why not have a good laugh? The surest recpe on the market at the moment s contaned n three books by Rchard Gordon : Doctor In The House, Doctor At Sea and The Captan's Table (all Mchael Joseph : 10s. 6d.) Lastly, but stll my frst choce as THE war-story of the Second World War, Edward Young's One Of Our Submarnes s now out n a Pengun edton for 2s. 6d. Some or all of the above should help you fll n a few dle dog-watches. I hope you enjoy them. The above books are obtanable from Geves Bookshop, The Hard, Portsmouth. 21

LOWER THE BOMB By LIEUT. CHADWICK, R.N. (Retd.) "Lower the Bomb." Fve hundred and eghty feet below the surface of the sea the dver passes the order over the telephone to hs alert attendant n the salvage shp, slowly heavng to the Western ocean swell and snug, whle the weather holds, wthn her sx moorngs surroundng the wreck. The hawsers fret n ther farleads and whp the wavetops. The wreck, sunk by a U-boat durng the War, has wthn her holds valuable non-pershable cargo for whch the World markets are clamourng. Cargoes worth ncalculable mllons le entombed beneath the oceans, late playgrounds of the submarne n pursut of ther lawful prey. The ntrepdty of the modern dver and salvage man, coupled wth the latest navgatonal and sonc ads, make deep sea recovery of precous cargoes a proposton attractve to the seafarer. Suspended wthn feet of the wreck, the dver, peerng through frst one scuttle, then another, of hs many wndowed observaton shell, can see an llumnated area of a few square feet of the shp's sde adjacent to number one hold, where an explosve charge s beng placed to cut down the shp's sde. The bomb, totally unlke any concept of the late Luftwaffe weapon raned on Brtan durng World War II, conssts of a long snake of submarne polar blastng gelatne ftted wth prmers and detonator, and heavly ballasted. Slung on two long wres from a heavy snker the bomb s lowered n response to the dver's order. Peerng nto the submarne gloom, the dver sees the bomb comng closer. The hgh power lght, suspended above the dver, can dspel but lttle, of the murk. In attendance, and lazly at frst, and then to all appearances anmatedly, sundry fsh, large and small, appear to nspect the nvaders of ther doman, and then vansh! " Hold the Bomb." The bomb stops n md-water abreast the chamber, pckng up the slow heave of fhe shp shared by_the dver. The dver's breathng canster' s gettng hot and the oxygen supply s not surgng through the bye-pass wth the exhlaratng rush of one hour ago, so speed and concentraton are demanded to complete the dve successfully. " Ten feet ahead " " Sx feet to starboard " the dver's order s transmtted to the Captan and all s lfe on deck. Immedately there s a surge of power to the wnches and the *hp-lke hawsers crack round the drums n response, shftng shp, and transferrng to the dver suspended below a rato of movement to poston the bomb. 22 "All set " Passed from the brdge ndcates that the order has been executed. " Just rght " " Or s t?" " Yes " " Steady " " Lower the Bomb." The tenuous snake of prmed explosve n ts protectve coat, wth mprovsed hook at the top, falls nto lne on the shp's platng and snugs n, beng carefully weghted under the dver's supervson before descendng. " Lower a lttle more " " Stop " " Bomb n poston." Exultant and wth a fnal survey to see that the wre antennae are slack enough to ensure rgdty of the charge, the dver passes the command " Up Chamber Up Shot." The yellow panted " shot " over a ton of ron, sways a lttle to the upward heave of the wnch and the phosphorescence streams past the dvng chamber wndows as the fral shell s hosted to the surface, a tenth of a mle above. Meanwhle, on deck, the chamber and shotrope hawsers, telephone and submarne lamp leads are hove n and coled down wth seamanlke precson. At long last the chamber breaks surface and wth a cluck of well-oled blocks s traned nboard by wllng hands and housed on deck. The ld s speedly unbolted and removed wth a " Plop " as the nteror postve pressure s 11). released. The dver, passng out used oxygen cylnders, cansters and telephone harness, clmbs from hs steel shell nto the sunlght and fresh ar. At the order from the brdge, down goes the plunger to fre the bomb. A clout and resonant metallc clang on the shp's hull ndcates the charge has fred. Down on the wreck, tortured rvets fly, a long secton of hull plate cuts cleanly, petallng nboard; mud and debrs cloud the area, and start to settle slowly. One more explosve paragraph s accomplshed n the chapter of the demolton and the prsng open of the hull of the wreck. Later, the dver wll descend agan to nspect, report, and lay further charges, untl the prze s wthn grasp. When reported ready, the eager salvage team, wth mghty eght ton grabs, tough steel fngers tearng the platng clear to gan access to the valuable cargo, work day and nght untl the holds are clear every descent of the grab too slow, every sezure and trumph of the powerful steam wnches the antcpaton of ether a grabload of cargo, or, as often happens, a heap of debrs. 23

C.-n-C. vsts Med. Team MEDITERRANEAN TEAM Greetngs from the rapturous Isle of Malta, n the sunny Medterranean (at the tme of wrtng, olskns and seaboots are the rg of the day). Snce our last communcaton (a long tme ago), we have done lots, and acheved??? Takng passage n varous H.M. Shps, t was unanmously decded that ths was a most outmoded way of transport and that the next tme we moved we would fly en bloc. Consequently operaton " Flyfrog " came nto beng. We flew to Gb. n no lesser plane than the noble Earl's personal plane (hm beng actng C.D.3), where we rendezvoused wth unenlghtened brethren of the H.S.C.D.T. who by the tme we had arrved had moved ther headquarters to Gb. Street and had shares n the Banque d'espanole. Lessons to be learned from flyng: check number of parcels off plane as well as on, e.g. do not leave booster for pumpng tyres of aeroplane. In varous exercses the Fleet, plus H.S.C.D.T. youths were gven the full beneft of the scheme and after stoppng nght leave to steamers and shallow water labourers on varous occasons, C.D.'s were as popular as a D.1 down a C.D. workshop. 25 And so, wth all the vagares of wnd and weather, tde, draggng moorngs and ever mmnent collson dangers, the work goes on, planned wth care and forethought by a small world of superb seamen and dvers, ntent upon ther task of deep salvage made possble by the dver's laconc order, " Lower the Bomb." H.M.S. "ANNET " Durng the frst three months of the year Annet along wth her " chummy " shp Flatholm was based n Surrey Commercal Docks, and dvng was carred out n the docks and n the rver between Putney Brdge and London Brdge. On 28th January, a dsplay' was gven for the Press, just below Lambeth Brdge. As ths happened to concde wth the coldest day for forty years we rather " ht the headlnes." On the followng Saturday, two members of the team were lucky enough to be nvted to speak on the programme "In Town Tonght." So now when we meet Flatholm we are always greeted wth the " Knghtsbrdge " march. On 25th March, we saled to Grmsby to take part n operaton " Lucky Strke." Ths conssted of the search and recovery of a " Sea Hawk " jet fghter, to enable the authortes to dscover the cause of the loss. The job was successfully completed and much valuable experence was ganed n dvng on sunken arcraft and n dvng at nght n rough weather. On the whole t made a pleasant change from lookng at bottoms. From May tll July we were agan operatng n the lower reaches of the Thames but we ddn't fnd t as muddy as we had been led to beleve. At the end of May our morale was consderably boosted by the openng of a new box of C.D.'s and the arrval of P.O. Spcer. Havng fnshed the Thames, we started operatng n the Medway n August, and we were able to bd a fond farewell to our " chummy shp the Flatholm when she saled for the Mersey. Durng operatons off Gunerson Pont, a rather unusual ncdent occurred. On haulng up the cwt. snker used as a shot one evenng, we found to our astonshment a large place wth ts head frmly embedded n the small recess under the snker. It was stll alve and took a lot of prsng to get t out, but t was eaten wth great relsh on the fore mess deck that same evenng. I thnk ths s an easer method of fshng than some of the spearng methods descrbed by our underwater explorng frends. At the moment our dvng actvtes have ceased, as we have just come nto Chatham Dockyard for a reft, so we are lmted to dvng n the swmmng bath. It s hoped to fnsh the Medway early n the New Year and to vst Vernon for the annual shake-up some tme n February. Greetngs to all at home and overseas. 24

The elder brethren had ther usual poston at the bar n the mess, excludng all regular mess members. And t must be told that one elder brother was, one evenng, strcken and lost control of hs lower garments. We are flttng from our outdated Nssen huts, and takng over a stone fortress on the banks of the creek, ngh on to the " House of Steam " where no doubt the unworthy characters wll be graced by havng such as we n the mmedate proxmty. For the future, there are nterestng cruses, all potental relefs (especally natves) please note. Also full scale tranng programme of the shallow water dvers for converson (nto the fath) s about to commence. SAM. CHATHAM We are pleased to report that all s well n the East at least, as well as t can be, after beng vsted by Flatholm, Annet, the 51st and the C.D.T. (A) all together. Personally, we prefer our poson n small regular. doses. They came durng the Chatham Navy Days and we even managed to envegle them nto jonng the dsplays and had 'em fron 100ft. hgh down to 33ft. n anythng from submarnes to helcopters. We have managed to extend our dvng area recently, and are now dvng n the basns and the locks I expect that we must leave just a lttle room for the Dockyard Movements Offcer to play hs lttle games. C.P.O. Pearman has left us for Superb and P.O. Kllon s off to Reclam. We wsh them bon voyage. We are happy to welcome to the fold P.O.s Watson and O'Connor. Before closng, we smply must let you hear our very latest : " Why s t necessary to clear your counter-lung?" Answer : " To get rd of the ar n your clothes!!!" C.D. TEAM PORTLAND We helped John Mlls to make hs flm " Above Us The Waves " and our tour of the studos was qute entertanng. Naturally the dvers had ther own tour, wthout gudes. Two fnshed up n the stables; yes, Sr, they found real horses competton, no doubt. The other three were last seen gong whskygreen whlst watchng a shp stage rollng. We played host to the 51st a short whle back. Led by Cobbe and Robb'e, they proceeded to drag the local team from pub to pub. A.B. Vnng has left the team, and I would lke to take ths chance on behalf of myself and the team to wsh hm luck outsde. A.B. Barrett has an addton. Congrats. Don't know yet steam or tt- breather. Team s now Mr. Donaghue, Whtmore, Chrstmas, Barrett, Housden and P.O. McKnley. 26 ROYAL NAVAL PHYSIOLOGICAL LABORATORY Durng the past four months, experments have been carred out n the Compresson Chamber at the R.N. Physologcal Laboratory wth a vew to elucdatng the causes of Ntrogen Narcoss. Surgeon Leut. Rashbass, R.N.V.R. wll shortly be producng a paper on hs fndngs. Durng a recent dve to 300 feet, a tape recordng was made to llustrate the changes n voce, stops beng made at every 50 feet. The result of the recordng s very good, and s beng kept for demonstraton purposes. Two members of the Staff wondered what the effect would be of ncreased pressure upon a bar of Rowntree's Aero Chocolate. They had vsualsed, that under pressure, the honeycomb texture of Aero chocolate would collapse. However, a bar of ths chocolate was recently taken to 300 feet pressure equvalent to 135 lbs. to the sq. nch). There was no effect whatsoever upon the bar of Aero chocolate. At long last we are pleased to announce that the money had been voted for the move and we wll be nstalled there by 1st December. Movng wth us wll be the same ex-vernon's n the form of the C.D.T.(A) and t s nterestng to note that the Mnstry of Agrculture, apprecatng the Corkheads' affnty for oysters have placed large parts of Poole Harbour out of bounds. The usual run of demonstratons have taken place recently at the Specal Boat Wng, Naval Sub. Leutenants beng the prme recpents. We were pleased to welcome two GURKHA Captans who saw a demonstraton specally gven for the Naval Staff College. Beng nonswmmers t s much to our Gurkha frends' credt that they dd manage to swm wth fns one of them even dd one or two lengths of the Swmmng Bath underwater usng a U.B.A. thus presumably beng the frst Gurkha ever to dve. Talkng of demonstratons, lke our frends at Vernon, we also took part n the Trafalgar Day B.B.C. broadcast. Squeezng an underwater approach, a shore attack on a radar tower and an underwater wthdrawal nto fve mnutes was rather dffcult, but we are glad to say that ths was n fact AUTHENTIC- ALLY commentated on by Mr. Davd Lloyd James n fact the whole show went off wth qute a bang!!
