4 BRIEF HISTORY OF TRAPSHOOTING Trapshooting is one of the three major disciplines of competitive clay pigeon shooting (shotgun shooting at clay targets). The other disciplines are skeet shooting and sporting clays. They are distinguished roughly as follows: In trap shooting, the targets are launched from a single house or machine, generally away from the shooter. In skeet shooting, targets are launched from two houses in somewhat sideways paths that intersect in front of the shooter. Sporting clays includes a more complex course, with many launch points. There are variations within each group. Trapshooting is practiced all over the world. There are many variants of trapshooting, however, American Trap is the predominant version in the United States and Canada. American Trap has two independent governing bodies. The Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA) sanctions events throughout the United States and Canada, as well as the sanctions events on the West Coast of North America. Trapshooting was originally developed, in part, to augment bird hunting and to provide a method of practice for bird hunters. Use of targets was introduced as a replacement for live pigeons. Indeed, one of the names for the targets used in shooting games is clay pigeons. The layout of a modern trapshooting course. Trapshooting has been a sport since the late 18th century when real birds were used; usually the passenger pigeon, which was extremely abundant at the time. Birds were placed were introduced around the time of the American Civil War. Glass balls (Bogardus) and subsequently clay targets were introduced in the later 1800s, gaining wide acceptance.

10 Club Message The members of the Prince George Rod & Gun Club Trap Section extend the warmest of welcomes to all participants in our annual Northern Classic Shoot and their families. Effective 2016, we renamed our shoot The Ed Horth Memorial Northern Classic in honour of our longtime friend Ed who passed away in This year s shoot is being held on Saturday, June 2nd and Sunday, June 3rd at the Club s Hartman Road facility just off Hwy. 16 West. We have an excellent concession on both days of competition and we have lots of parking available for RVs. There is a complimentary barbecue on the evening of Friday, June 1st for participants and their families; hamburgers and hot dogs will be served. On Saturday evening, we offer the Calcutta dinner; tickets are $20.00 per person and drinks are $3.00. Both the barbecue and the Calcutta dinner are held at the main clubhouse at the entrance to the Club property. In addition this year, we will be having a PITA-sanctioned 500-bird doubles shoot starting at 1:00 PM on Friday, June 1st. No prize money will be given out for this shoot. The entry fee is $25.00 for the first 100 birds and $22.00 for each of the four other 100-bird events. 11 Certification The Prince George Rod & Gun Club has been authorized to hold a registered shoot on June 2nd & 3rd, P.I.T.A. rules Sue Brewer, Secretary, will govern this shoot and scores made will be included in the official record. Tournament Rules This tournament will be governed by rules printed herein and current P.I.T.A. Official Trapshooting Rules. Registration and squadding will be available Friday afternoon. This tournament will be shot over two traps. Practice will be available Friday afternoon. No practice of any description will be allowed after the first or before last registered target is shot on any day of the competition. Each trap will be set by the Trap Committee prior to the commencement of each day s shoot. Trap Committee must approve all changes to trap machines after an event has started. Any contestant contravening this rule will be liable to disqualification from all events. This tournament will be held regardless of weather conditions. Any contestant withdrawing from or failing to start an event due to inclement weather will forfeit all entry fees, options and purse for that event. No entry fees, options or purses will be refunded after an event has begun and a contestant withdraws, unless the cause for withdrawal is a genuine emergency. A broken firearm is not a valid reason for withdrawal. All guns used by contestants must be so equipped and used so as not to eject shells in a manner to disturb or interfere with other contestants. Any contestant who disturbs the harmony of the tournament may be disqualified from the entire tournament. Contestants wishing to save their empty shells must do so before shells hit the ground. Picking up empty shells from the ground is prohibited. No live shells will be allowed on the ground. Yardage breaks in handicap events apply to trophies only. Yardage breaks do not apply to awarding prize or option money. The purse option in all events is calculated on 100 targets. Each class shoots for its own money. If insufficient shooters enter an option, the option fees will be refunded. Calcutta - Buyer 75% - Shooter 25% - Club retains 5% of bids only. The host club reserves the right to combine short squads in an arbitrary fashion to expedite the tournament. Please avoid short squads. The Prince George Rod & Gun Club reserves the right to alter the tournament program in whole or in part. Prize money can not be altered. The Prince George Rod & Gun Club will not be responsible for lost or stolen articles. Memberships All contestants must be members of the P.I.T.A. for the current year. Memberships will be available at the registration counter and payable upon registration. Contestants are required to present P.I.T.A. and A.T.A. membership cards and up to date score cards to the Handicap Committee for classification and handicapping. 16 Yard Classification Doubles Classifications Class A 96.00% and above Class A 91.50% and above B 92.50% to 95.99% B 83.00% to 91.49% C 88.50% to 92.49% C under 83.00% D under 88.50% All shooters participating in P.I.T.A. registered shoots must shoot not less than B class until they have shot 500 P.I.T.A. registered 16 yard Singles targets. All shooters participating in P.I.T.A. registered shoots must shoot not less than 20 yards until they have shot 500 P.I.T.A. registered Handicap targets. All shooters participating in P.I.T.A. registered shoots must shoot not less than B class until they have shot 200 P.I.T.A. registered Doubles targets. A shooter who has not shot 16 yard Singles or Doubles targets for a period of one or more years shall resume shooting from their last assigned class. A shooter rejoining the P.I.T.A. after an absence of 1 or more years shall resume shooting from their previous P.I.T.A. handicap yardage assignment. All shooters participating in a P.I.T.A. regisered shoot are required to shoot their longest yardage (A.T.A. or P.I.T.A.) It is the responsibility of the contestant to inform the Handicap Committee of eligibility for Special Categories. The Handicap Committee reserves the right to re-classify any contestant at any time during the tournament. All winners and ties on the Saturday events will move to a higher class on Sunday.
