18 L o n n i e P o o l e G o l f C o u r s e I (was very) excited to hear about the potential for NC State to acquire its own course. There was a lot of talk about building a golf course while I was being recruited by NCSU and it is very encouraging to know that things are finally moving in that direction. It will definitely be a great asset for the golf coaches. - Carl Pettersson, PGA Tour Player and former NC State golfer Adding to the tradition and distinction of NC State University s commitment to academic and athletic excellence, the first 18-hole golf course was built on NC State s Centennial Campus. Thanks to a $3 million gift from Lonnie C. Poole and his wife Carol Lynn Poole in the spring, construction on the Lonnie Poole Golf Course began in the summer of 2007, and play began in the summer of The course is an 18-hole, 7,350-yard, par 71 public course. Funds were raised for a $11.6 million dollar Arnold Palmer Signature multipurpose golf course that would also include a research center and clubhouse. It would not only aid the golf teams, but would also support critical academic programs, including the Professional Golf Management (PGM) and turfgrass programs. The Palmer Course Design Company, a team of superior golf design and construction professionals, has been chosen to oversee a signature course built with the Wolfpack s athletic, academic and alumni goals in mind. Erik Larsen, a NC State alumnus, is the architect designing NC State s golf course for Arnold Palmer Designs. Our goal was to build a course equal to or better than any collegiate course in the country, stated Larsen. I m very confident this is going to be a top quality course that will provide an excellent venue for collegiate competition. The 18-hole tract features great variety, with low lying areas as well as fairways with rolling hills. It also features beautiful green sites as well as tee boxes. Several areas of the course will provide gorgeous views of downtown Raleigh as well as the NC State campus. The course features three types of character flat, wetlands, and trees which makes it a very interesting golf course, commented Larsen. NC State will have the best golf course in the ACC. - Arnold Palmer at the 2008 Golf Coaches Association of America s Hall of Fame Awards Dinner W O L F P A C K W O M e n s G O L F

19 For the nearly 60 industry and government organizations, and the new Alumni Center that will be located on Centennial Campus, this golf course fulfills the promise of a full-spectrum campus. The golf course will not only provide an amenity for those looking further their interaction with faculty, students and alumni, but it will also be an important attraction to future organizations considering Centennial Campus as a prime Raleigh business location. - Terry Wood, Vice Chancellor, University Advancement The par 71 course will list nine par four holes, five par threes and four par five holes, measuring 7,350 yards from the championship tees. A driving range and practice green are also available. The NC State golf course, research and training facility, and clubhouse covers approximately 200 acres and be positioned on the southernmost portion of Centennial Campus, easily accessible from Interstate 40. These facilities support the academic and athletic needs of the university, and will also benefit the community by providing the only public golf course inside the beltline. The research and training facility serve as the focal point for critical research, teaching and extension programs within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and as a central laboratory for NC State s prestigious Turfgrass Management and Professional Golf Management Programs (PGM). This 12,000 square foot facility includes classrooms, working laboratories, meeting and conference rooms, offices, and storage for the turfgrass program and for the PGM program, as well as offices, locker rooms, showers, meeting room, storage and a golf club repair area for the golf teams. Common areas include a reception area, offices, student lounge, classrooms and conference room. The clubhouse will be an 8,500 square foot, two-story frame building with a 1,200 square foot outdoor terrace overlooking the course and practice range. NC State s environmentally-friendly golf course will not only fulfill its role for recreation and athletics, but will provide the university with a functioning laboratory for research, instruction, and training. In addition, the university will propose this course for the Audubon Signature Program certification. This program strives to balance wildlife conservation, habitat enhancement and environmental improvements with the economics and practicalities of running a golf course. With the proximity of the golf course to the new Alumni Center, NC State clubs, conferences, meetings and reunions will have the option of including golf tournaments as well as hosting fundraising golf tournaments. 20 S tat e C u p Wolfpack Club The NC State Student Aid Association (The Wolfpack Club) is a private organization established in 1936 to promote and support the athletics program at NC State. Through continuous fund-raising efforts, the Wolfpack Club is able to provide 100% of the studentathlete scholarships and to continue to build and improve athletic facilities at NC State. Over 18,000 Wolfpack Club members make this type of support possible. The organization also coordinates many special events and functions for Wolfpackers all over the state, as well as certain regions of the country. Ticket priority and special mailings are two popular benefits of becoming a donor. However, the most important benefit is knowing that the contribution is providing a young man or woman the opportunity to attend NC state University. The Wolfpack Club would like to thank the following people for the generous scholarship endowments to the women s golf program. The State Cup weekend is a fun way to help build a proud golf tradition at NC State. Foursomes compete in the golf tournament with former and current members of the Wolfpack playing as a celebrity for each group. The 2007 State Cup took place at Prestonwood Country Club. The participants also attended and enjoyed a tailgate party before the NC State football game against Wake Forest on October 14. Dr. Robb Wade, a professor in NC State s Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management college and the assistant director of the school s Professional Golf Management program, served as the coordinator for the event. Wolfpack Women s Weekend The annual Wolfpack Women s Weekend held during early June has become a Wolfpack tradition at one of the state s premier golf resorts for women Wolfpack fans to gather for a weekend of golf and to hear from several coaches of NC State women s teams speak. 21 atlantic coast conference A C C w o m e n s G o l f Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually impossible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 56th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive intercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. In women s golf, Duke is second in all-time NCAA championships with its five titles (1999, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007), only trailing Arizona State s six. Miami claimed one NCAA national title in 1984, before joining the ACC. Duke is tied with Southern California for third in NCAA individual champions, claiming three national medalists - Candy Hannemann (2001), Virada Nirapathpongporn (2002), and Anna Grzebien (2005). The ACC currently has nine teams competing in women s golf with the newest additions being Miami, (2004) and Boston College, (2005). The conference recognized women s golf as a conference sport in when a minimum of four teams (Duke, North Carolina, NC State and Wake Forest) competed. After a five-year hiatus, women s golf became a sponsored sport once again in 1992 with Duke, Florida State, North Carolina and Wake Forest competing. Maryland joined the ranks during the 2000 season, while NC State joined the following year (2001). Duke has won 16 ACC championships, followed by Wake Forest (3) and North Carolina (1). Duke leads the schools in ACC individual championships with 14, followed by Wake Forest (4) and North Carolina (2). Six of the nine women s golf teams participated in the NCAA Regionals a year ago, with three of those teams - Duke, Wake Forest and Virginia advancing to the NCAA Championship. All three teams placed in the NCAA top 15 with Duke placing third, Wake Forest tying for 10 th place and Virginia tying for 12 th place. The nine schools that carry the ACC banner this spring have produced 60 first or second team All-Americans, seven National Player of the Years, three national freshmen of the years, and six National Coach of the Years W O L F P A C K W O M e n s G O L F 1 9

22 S h o r t G a m e Fa c i l i t y NC State opened its short game practice facility August Located on campus at the University Club, it is adjacent to a parthree golf course. A state of the art facility designed for virtually any type of short game practice, the Wolfpack s practice facility is closed to the public. Three separate greens, constructed to USGA specifications, are the focal points of the facility, planted with a blend of A-1 and A-4 bent grass providing a turf that is unsurpassed for putting surface quality in the southeastern states. The 6,800 square foot putting green is characterized by diverse movement with a wide variety of slopes and breaks. The chipping green is designed for sand, lob wedge and bump and run play. This green is surrounded by bunkers of varying depths, hollows mowed at both fairway and rough heights, level run-up areas and elevated ridges for downhill shots to the putting surface. Imagination is the only limit to shot variety in this area. The third green is designed as three distinct areas. It is protected by bunkers and hollows and will accommodate shots up to 100 yards. Mowing patterns surrounding this green allow play from both fairway and rough cuts. This facility is a one of a kind, said the designer, Bob Moore of JMP Golf Design, who graduated from NC State and has built award-winning golf courses all over the world, including the Heritage Golf Club in Wake Forest, N.C., which earned the Best New Course Award in It will provide the NC State golf teams with an unrivaled short game practice area. Bob Erickson Golf Facilities Superintendent NC State has a top-notch practice facility, said Carl Pettersson, a former All-American for the Wolfpack who currently plays on the PGA Tour. When I m home and not on competing on the PGA Tour, I always make it a point to practice at NC State s facility to keep my short game sharp. The facility also includes a putting green and a spacious indoor lounge. In order for the practice facility to be useful to the men s and women s golf teams, it has to simulate tournament conditions at all times, said Bob Erikson, the superintendent of the short game practice facility. That s what we strive for every day - a facility that allows the athletes the opportunity to practice every conceivable short game shot. I ve worked at both the men s and women s US Open Championships and a number of PGA events, and I can honestly say that the NC State golf practice facility rivals any short game facility in the area used by players of that caliber. The new building renovations will allow NC State to provide the student-athletes with a place they can call their own for the first time in NC State golf team history W O L F P A C K W O M e n s G O L F

23 P h y s i c a l I m p r o v e m e n t Proper strength and conditioning is a key to success on the fields of play for all collegiate athletes, and at NC State each athlete is provided an opportunity to build themselves through the Wolfpack s outstanding physical improvement program. All the facilities needed by the Wolfpack soccer program are available in the expanded Weisiger Brown weight room facility. Chris Morland, the Pack s strength and conditioning advisor, is there to provide superior training and guidance to the entire team. Sports Medicine Under the direction of Charlie Rozanski, few programs play a role as essential to the continued success of NC State athletics as sports medicine. It provides preventive care that helps athletes avoid injuries, and postinjury treatment that enables athletes to fully recover as soon as possible. p r a c t i c e, n u t r i t i o n a n d C o n d i t i o n i n g Care starts with the facilities, and with 23 varsity athletic teams at NC State, the school has a pair of fully equipped training rooms, one in Reynolds Coliseum and one at the Weisiger-Brown Athletics Facility. The Weisiger-Brown training room, where the men s soccer team is treated, opened in July of 2006 and is a state-of-the-art facility. The Wolfpack is assisted by a host of health care professionals in the Raleigh community, providing state-of-the-art care in prevention and treatment of athletic injuries. This readily available task force includes physicians, orthopedic consultants and chiropractic consultants. Case Dining Hall Proper nutrition is essential to all Wolfpack athletes. The Case Dining Hall provides wellbalanced and appetizing meals needed to maintain winning performances. NC State athletes enjoy the convenience and outstanding quality of the Case training table. The friendly Case Dining Hall staff does an outstanding job feeding over 400 athletes three meals a day. The dining hall is located on the bottom floor of Case Athletic Center, which is convenient to main campus, the Weisiger-Brown Facility, Reynolds Coliseum and classrooms. Each meal is designed to give the athlete a number of healthy options. There is a wide array of food selections including a buffet line, potato and pasta bar, salad bar, cold sandwich buffet with a variety of breads and meats, frozen yogurt and desserts. The meal schedule is molded around the class and practice schedules of the athletes, which allows them an extra advantage in budgeting their time W O L F P A C K W O M e n s G O L F 2 1
