3 Welcome Letter Dear New Employee, Welcome to Lexington Tower! Here you will have an opportunity to work with a team of professionals that help make this a great place to work and develop your skills. Your knowledge, abilities and positive attitude made you a highly regarded addition to our team, and I am certain that you will make a positive impact on our future. A new generation of air traffic controllers is being developed here and your participation is crucial. All of us want to make your tenure at this facility as enjoyable and rewarding as possible. Please feel free to ask any questions and express your thoughts and ideas to management, staff and team leadership. Our aim is to create an atmosphere which involves everyone in the process of making our facility an exceptional place to work. 4 Lexington Tower Today Lexington Airport was built from late 1941 to 1943 and was used by the Army Air Corps for training during World War II. The airport had three runways, all 3500 feet long. After the war, the airport was sold to the city of Lexington. The first airline to service the area was Bluegrass Airline. It only had flights to other Kentucky cities. In 1946, an airport board was established and on October 13, 1946, Delta and Eastern Airlines began service to the Lexington Bluegrass Airport. Today, Runway 4/22 is the only runway in service. However, development of a new Runway 9/27 is underway. Construction on the first control tower began in 1949 for an estimated cost of $28,000. On January 16, 1950, the control tower was dedicated and opened for business. The control tower standing today was dedicated on October 9, 1970 and the radar installation was completed on March 24, In 1976 a new terminal was completed and later renovated in In 2006, renovation and expansion of the terminal building was again undertaken with the addition of concourse B. The Lexington Airport has continued to grow over the years and is now a level 7 facility with ASR 11 radar equipment and ARTS IIE automation. The facility receives weather from ASOS weather equipment augmented by LAWRS weather observers in the tower. Our airport s traffic is comprised of a mix of general aviation traffic and approximately 11 different air carriers and air taxis that provide regularly scheduled flights in and out of Lexington that connect to major cities. 4

6 Lexington Tower Leadership Team KRISTINE M. TUCKER, Air Traffic Manager, Lexington Tower Kris began working for the FAA in She participated in an FAA sponsored internship while working on her bachelor s degree at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. During the internship she was employed at Lincoln ATCT and Kansas City Enroute Center. Kris has been a Certified Professional Controller (CPC) at Grand Island, NE (GRI) ATCT, Lincoln, NE (LNK) ATCT/TRACON, and Louisville, KY (SDF) ATCT/TRACON. At SDF, Kris worked as a Plans and Procedures Support Specialist for five years. In 2007, Kris began working in management at Louisville, KY Louisville-Bowman (LOU) ATCT as the Air Traffic Manager. In 2010, Kris was promoted to Lexington (LEX) ATCT/TRACON as the Air Traffic Manager. Kris resides in La Grange, KY (Oldham Country) with her husband Gary who is the Air Traffic Manager at Louisville-Bowman (LOU ATCT. They have two young girls who participate in competitive swimming for the Lakeside Seahawks. 6

7 FRONT LINE MANAGERS Ron Hall, Front Line Manager A native Kentuckian, Ron has been at Lexington Tower for more than twenty years the first sixteen as a controller and the last four years as a supervisor. Lexington has a good mix of traffic and approaches and provides good learning opportunities for those who come here. It was the chance to help provide those opportunities that led Ron to be a trainer first and then a supervisor. Prior to his work with the FAA, Ron served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco for almost four years. Travel has been a longtime interest along with sports, both as a participant and spectator. Ron enjoys sharing those interests with his wife and four children. 7

8 FRONT LINE MANAGERS H. Faron Collins, Front Line Manager Faron's air traffic controller career began in 1989 when he joined the U.S. Air Force. His tours of duty included Wright-Patterson AFB, Homestead AFB, Osan AB, Ramstein AB, and March ARB. Following his Air Force tenure, Faron served a short stint as a civilian controller in the D.O.D before joining the FAA in Since joining the FAA, Faron has worked as a controller at the Los Angeles Center and the Lexington ATCT. Lexington is his seventh facility and he has worked in both enroute and terminal environments. In addition to being a controller, Faron is an instrument rated private pilot. He is married to Christy and has two great kids. He considers Lexington a great place to live and raise his family. During Faron's off time, he can be found taxiing his children around town for appointments and activities. Faron enjoys riding his motorcycle around the beautiful Kentucky landscape, flying and aerial photography. 8

9 FRONT LINE MANAGERS Christopher "Kit" T. Plympton, Front Line Manager Kit began his air traffic control career with the U.S. Air Force in Prior to his discharge in 1984, Kit served in Texas, Mississippi, Georgia (three times), Illinois, California and Massachusetts, where he was certified at Boston ATCT. His FAA career began as an Air Traffic Assistant at Stockton ATCT then subsequently at Lexington ATCT. After becoming an FAA controller, he has been assigned to Lexington ATCT, Louisville (SDF) ATCT, Memphis ATCT, Bradley ATCT, and Y90 TRACON. Kit came to Lexington as a Front Line Manager in August of He has ten control tower and five radar certifications in the USAF and FAA. Kit and TJ, his wife of 33 years, have stayed on the move during their time together. They have lived at 22 different mailing addresses in 11 different states. They have two grown children and seven grandchildren that live out of state. 9

11 Reporting for Duty As a new controller, you should report to work at 7:30 a.m. on your first day. If a special circumstance requires a different start time, contact the facility manager. Your start time may be adjusted thereafter during your initial classroom training. There is a call box at the entrance to the facility parking lots. When you arrive, press the call button. You will be expected, and will receive a prompt greeting and entrance to the facility. Hours of Duty During your initial classroom training, you can plan on a eight and a half hour shift, with half hour for lunch. You may leave the facility during this half hour lunch break. Once you begin your on-the-job training (OJT), you will work an eight hour shift. You will receive half hour paid lunch break. During your eight hour shift, you may not leave the facility during your breaks unless you are on some form of approved leave. When you are on a break during your shift, you are expected to return to work promptly at the end of your break, and may be recalled early if needed. Parking One secure parking lot is located immediately adjacent to the facility. Parking permits are not required. Security and Building Access FAA ID cards must be displayed at all times while in the facility. Facility grounds are surrounded by a secure fence, with gates at the driveway and the sidewalk entrance. Access to the gates and facility entry doors is provided by an electronic access card, which will be issued to you on your first day in the facility. Be alert to and report any instances of suspicious behavior or activity, or attempts by unauthorized personnel to enter the parking lot or buildings. 11

12 FAA ID Cards FAA ID cards must be worn at all times while in the facility or on FAA grounds. If you are a new employee, you will receive an employee badge initially at the Acade,u/ If you lose your permanent ID card, contact the facility secretary or watch supervisor immediately so FAA Security can be advised. Subsequently, you will be provided with a temporary employee badge. Guests and Visitors Due to enhance security requirements, guests and visitors are normally limited to immediate family. Other tours or visits may be allowed with prior manager approval. Phone Calls Unless an emergency or unusual situation exists, family/friends/businesses should not normally call you on facility telephones. After administrative hours, you may leave a recorded message for the facility secretary who will respond on the next administrative work day. Routine phone calls should be routed through the Facility Administrative Officer at (859) Cell Phones Cell phones must be turned off in the TRACON and Tower Cab, but may be used in non-work areas of the facility. 12

13 Local Area Information - Lexington Profile Population: 279,044 (as of 2007) Lexington s early reputation as the Athens of the West due to its role as a trade, cultural, and educational center during colonial expansion has been carefully protected and its cosmopolitan role enhanced. Located on a plateau lying at the edge of the Cumberland Gap, Lexington remains the financial, educational, retail, health care, service, and cultural center of the Bluegrass Region in central Kentucky and most of eastern Kentucky. Lexington residents possess a special pride in their homeland. No matter what your pleasure or work, it is all here in Lexington s Bluegrass Country. From sampling blue-ribbon pies at the county fair to sipping mint juleps on the veranda, from the excitement of unsurpassed collegiate athletics to the tranquility of your favorite fishing hole, Lexington offers all the amenities of a major city with the allure of nearby countryside. 13

14 Attractions Abound in Lexington Located in Lexington, the heart of the Bluegrass, the Kentucky Horse Park is a working horse farm with 1,200 acres surrounded by 30 miles of white plank fencing. The park is like none other in the world. Dedicated to man s relationship with the horse, the park features two outstanding museums, twin theatres and nearly 50 different breeds of horses. Visitors can watch a harness maker at work, enjoy the parade of breeds, or take a horse-drawn carriage tour. The park offers a variety of classes and programs for both adults and youngsters. Special events are held throughout the year, including the Rolex Three-Day Event and the High Hope Steeplechase. On Sundays at the park, spectators can enjoy polo matches (free admission). The galleries at the Kentucky Horse Park play host to a variety of internationally significant exhibitions, such as the world exclusive Imperial China, Horses and Hollywood, and All the Queen s Horses. Recently completely refurbished to accommodate the world-class exhibitions it now holds, these galleries also feature changing exhibits of equine art from some of the world s foremost equestrian artists. At the end of the year the Kentucky Horse Park hosts the Southern Lights Spectacular Sights on Holiday Nights which has been designated a Top Twenty Event by the Southeast Tourism Society. The four-mile driving tour is a lavish display of the splendor and traditions of the season. This display is accompanied by other holiday activities and events at the Park. All of these elements combine to make a visit to the park an enjoyable experience for everyone in any season. The Kentucky Horse Park is also a home to the National Horse Center, which is a collection of top equine management associations and organizations. 14

15 Filling six different office buildings on the park, the center is home to eighteen organizations that believe the Kentucky Horse Park is the ideal setting for their national offices. The Thoroughbred Center is a 240-acres Thoroughbred training facility offering tours to look behind the scenes for a rare glimpse of "A Day in the Life of a Thoroughbred in Training!" Filled with hearty pin oaks, sycamores and maple trees, Keeneland's paddock is one of the most beautiful places you will find in central Kentucky. Located in the heart of Bluegrass Country, this National Historic Landmark in Lexington, Kentucky is home to some of the world's most prestigious Thoroughbred races and auctions. In addition, there is a constant bustle of activity for simulcast racing and many special events. Keeneland is one of the few racetracks in America where the racing fans are allowed to get close to the horses. The Keeneland races run during the months of April and October. The Keeneland racetrack clubhouse is open all year round. Keeneland Racetrack 15

16 Yearly activities in Lexington include the July 4th Celebration, Shakespeare in the Park, Roots and Heritage Festival, Bluegrass State Games, Kentucky Christmas Chorus, Dirt Bowl, Memorial Day Weekend Three on Three Basketball tournament and Museum-Go-Round, St. Patrick's Day Parade, Junior League Horse Show, Festival of the Bluegrass and many other city-wide events. Other facilities for recreation include nearly 30 golf courses (six of them private country clubs), racquetball and tennis clubs, health spas, horseback riding stables, bowling facilities, indoor and drive-in movie theaters, shopping malls, and special shopping areas. Lexington offers numerous public service organizations and special interest clubs. 16

17 Sporting and Special Events Sports and entertainment events are available at the 23,000-seat Rupp Arena in the Lexington Center. Rupp Arena is the home court of seven time NCAA basketball champions, the University of Kentucky Wildcats. It is one of the largest arenas of its kind in the country. A convention center, hotel, shopping mall, and numerous restaurants round out the facilities at the Lexington Civic Center, which is located in the heart of the downtown area. The University of Kentucky's athletic program provides sporting events year-round. U.K.'s 67,000-seat Commonwealth Stadium is the scene of exciting football games. Memorial Coliseum is the home court for the U.K. Lady Cats. 17

Commerce Lexington Inc. seeks to promote economic development, job creation, and overall business growth in Lexington and its neighboring communities, while strengthening its existing businesses through the many programs and services that the organization offers. It was created to provide more continuity and enhanced focus in the areas of business, economic development, and workforce development. 18
