Voss Stuart Morris wears a cowboy hat, talks with a southern accent, has Kentucky plates on his car (truck?) and is far more likely to be part of Big Blue Nation than he is to Fear The Turtle. But he s a fan of Maryland. The Lexington-based sales consignor brought 22 yearlings to Timonium for the Fasig-Tipton sale last month. And went home to the Bluegrass happy. Morris sold 19 for $447,200 as part of a sale with its highest gross and average prices since I m a big believer that it s all a big pot we live in, said Morris moments after a Tapizar colt topped the consignment by selling for $90,000 to bloodstock agent Bobby Dodd on behalf of Grand Oaks. Kentucky is the center of the Thoroughbred industry in this country, but it s by no means the end all, be all. There are good quality horses and horsemen and judges of horses and people that raise good horses all over the country. When everybody s healthy, we all do better. For the second consecutive year, Maryland-breds helped drive Fasig-Tipton s numbers at the fall yearling sale not that they were the only horses there. More than 40 percent By Joe Clancy of the sale s gross receipts of $6,436,600 came from Maryland-breds and five of the 11 yearlings sold for $100,000 or more were Maryland-breds. The reasons are plentiful: the state s s raise good horses, the slots-bolstered purse fund rewards owners and s who race their horses in Maryland, the racing climate at the Maryland Jockey Club is on the upswing and there s a bit of a vacuum as foal crops catch up with all that progress and the demand it has created. Morris is on board. The state legislature in Mary land is very much behind the industry, which is important, and there has always been a great group of horsemen here trainers who buy horses and s who raise horses, he said. They fought the good fight for so long when a lot of people would have walked away. I m happy for them. He s also happy to tap into the business by selling yearlings bred in Maryland, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky at Timonium. Morris and Darby Dan Farm, also from Kentucky, were the only consignors from outside the region to crack the top 10 by gross. Darby Dan sold 23 for $695,000, led by the sale s top-priced filly at $290,000. Carl McEntee, whose early jobs in the industry were at regional operations Ghost Ridge Farm (Pennsylvania) and Northview Stallion Station (Maryland and Pennsylvania), oversees Darby Dan s sales operation and targeted Timonium for specific horses. We brought 27, which is a big consignment for us here, McEntee said. I spent a lot of time here so I know the region well and enjoy coming back. But it s also a good market for the right horses. There s a great mix of buyers here, from pinhookers to trainers looking for racehorses. Across the barn area, consignor Northview Stallion Station enjoyed a strong sale as well from a different perspective. A regional stalwart with farms in Maryland and Pennsylvania, Northview sold 18 horses for $507,000. Several were Maryland-breds, and they were in demand led by a $150,000 Flatter filly and a $145,000 Scat Daddy filly. People for the last few years come up and ask to see Maryland-breds, said David Wade, Northview s director of sales. There was a period of time when we didn t hear that. It s nice to hear it again. 2 2 Coady Photography Maryland-bred Stakes Winners First stakes win a Grade 1 for 2-year-old filly Dancing Rags Racing for Phyllis Wyeth s Chadds Ford Stable, the Graham Motion-trained Dancing Rags won her stakes debut, taking the $400,000 Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes by a length Oct. 7, opening day of Keeneland s fall meet. Sent off as the seventh choice in a field of 14 in the mile test, the Marylandbred daughter of Chadds Ford s classic winner Union Rags was forwardly placed by Angel Cruz during the opening stages, less than 2 lengths off the early leader. Tipped out to launch her run around the far turn, she powered through the stretch and held off Daddys Lil Darling in 1: Dancing Rags was bred by David DiPietro and foaled at Shamrock Farms in Woodbine. She is the eighth named foal out graded stakes-placed Home Court (by Storm Cat), who is also the dam of multiple graded stakes winner Coup de Grace, a son of Tapit with earnings just shy of $500,000. Dancing Rags second dam, Jewel Princess, was champion older mare of 1996 and won 10 stakes, four Grade 1s, including the 1996 Breeders Cup Distaff, while earning $1,904,060. Sold as a yearling for $80,000, Dancing Rags was back in the ring this past March in Florida, selling for $210,000 at the OBS sale. Third in her debut at Laurel Aug. 5, at furlongs on the turf, she won her next start by lengths at Laurel going 1 mile on the dirt. Motion explained the step up to Grade 1 competition: I felt [the Alcibiades] was an open race. She just seemed to have done really well since her maiden win at Laurel [Sept. 17] and progressively kept improving. This is the time of year when you ve got to take a shot. The historic Alcibiades is a Breeders Cup Win and You re In race for the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies-G1 Nov. 5 at Santa Anita. From three starts, Dancing Rags has earned $275,360. R The President s Corner Maryland Horse Breeders Association president Willie White discusses some of the industry s issues. Why should Maryland owners and s support Fasig-Tipton Midlantic s sales at Timonium? Our group Skeedattle Associates has purchased many yearlings and a few 2-year-olds at Timonium with great success. We have run in the Kentucky Derby, the Breeders Cup, Arlington Million and many other major races with horses purchased there and the offspring of horses purchased there. We ve won the Dixie and Maryland Million races here in Maryland. The point is, it s a great place to buy a horse at any price point and has been for quite some time. With the resurgence of the Maryland-bred program, it s only going to get better. Buyers and consignors can benefit from the state s position in the industry regionally and nationally but it depends on participation. Everyone benefits when you buy and sell at Timonium. 3 Giant Run captures $200,000 Centaur Stakes Since leaving Gulfstream Park in May with firsts or seconds in all four starts at the track this year, three in stakes company, Giant Run has tested the turf in three other states. His most recent trip, to Indiana Grand in Shelbyville, Ind., resulted in his third stakes win, and richest score, the $200,000 Centaur Sept. 7. Reunited with Joe Bravo, who guided him to his first stakes victory in the Cutler Bay in March (after they finished a close second in the Grade 3 Palm Beach), Giant Run went off as the lukewarm favorite in the 1-mile Centaur, which attracted 10 sophomores. Carrying equal top weight of 123 pounds, he was rated off the pace until midway around the turn. Hitting the front with a quarter-mile to go, he held off the late runners to win by three-quarters of a length. His final time was 1:35.68 over the firm turf. The son of Giant s Causeway and the Polish Numbers mare Who Did It and Run, bred by Richard Golden s Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds, improved to this year, for earnings of $355,296. Owned by Robert Baker and William Mack and trained by Tom Albertrani, Giant Run has raced exclusively in stakes company since breaking his maiden at Gulf stream Park Jan. 2. His only off the board finish was a fourth in Saratoga s National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame-G2 in his previous outing, missing the win by a length. He won Belmont s Manila Stakes in July and was third in the Grade 3 Penn Mile. His lifetime earnings stand at $375,436 from 12 starts. Lovable Lady continues to keep the legacy of longtime s Samuel and Carolyn Rogers alive as she reeled off her third consecutive victory and second straight in a stakes by taking the $75,000 Politely for Maryland-bred fillies and mares Oct. 1 at Laurel. The 5-year-old Not For Love mare, sent off as the 3-2 favorite in the field of eight, battled stubborn longshot leader Deliver Me nearing the wire and surged past for a 1-length victory over a sloppy track, completing 6 furlongs in 1: A third-generation homebred, Lovable Lady campaigns for the Rogers family trust, following the deaths of Sam Rogers in late October 2015, and Carolyn on Valentine s Day this past winter, one day after Lovable Lady won an allowance at Laurel. Trained throughout her career by Mary Eppler, Lovable Lady did not get to the races until her 4-year-old season. In 14 starts since, she has just once finished off the board that in a roughly run turf sprint in April. Lovable Lady is the sole runner from three foals for the Notebook mare Summer Notebook. 4 MD-breds average $90,000 at Keeneland September Buyers spent nearly $3 million on 33 Maryland-bred yearlings at the mammoth Keeneland September yearling sale, Sept in Kentucky. The average was $90,894, and median $50,000. Eleven brought six figures. The top price at $360,000 was a Bernardini colt bred by Bob Manfuso and Katy Voss and purchased by Cheyenne Stables, Three Chimneys and Erik Johnson. The second foal out of stakes winner Nana Knows (by Gold Tribute), the March 1 foal consigned with Nursery Place, is from the family of graded winners Region, Announce, Double Feint and Narrate. An Uncle Mo filly out of stakes-winning Tapit mare Galloping Giraffe went for $325,000 on a bid by Jay Em Ess Stable. Bred by The Elkstone Group, the filly foaled March 25 and is the first foal for her dam, a half-sister to Pennsylvania Derby-G2 winner Timber Reserve. Tim Rooney bred a Scat Daddy colt who sold for $250,000 to Fox Hill Farm (Tom McGreevy, agent). The colt (foaled Feb. 26) is out of the Smart Strike mare Striking Kathy, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner J P s Gusto. W.D. North Thoroughbreds made two of the six-figure purchases late in the sale. The more expensive was a Sagamore Farm-bred son of Quality Road for $200,000 Sept. 22. Consigned by Upson Downs Farm, the colt is the first foal out of Polyester, a daughter of Tiz Wonderful and a full-sister to stakes winners Sneaky Quiet and Ironman Dehere. One day earlier, W.D. North Thoroughbreds spent $180,000 to secure a Shanghai Bobby colt out of the Lemon Drop Kid mare Deborah s Moment. Bred by Charles and Cynthia McGinnes and sold through Brook dale Sales, the colt named Snatchandgrab is out of a half-sister to graded stakes winners Sum of the Parts and Rocket Heat. His second dam is three-time graded winner Enjoy the Moment. A half-sister to Grade 1- winning millionaire Cathryn Sophia sold to Zayat Stables for $190,000. The Denman (Aus) filly, bred by Bob Manfuso, is the third foal out of Manfuso s homebred mare Sheave. The filly s second dam is graded winner and Grade 1- placed Belterra.
