4 4 Maryland-breds sell well at April OBS 2-year-old sale Friesan Fire filly out of the Duck the Punch (by Two Punch) turned in an eye-catching work at the Ocala Training Sale. Following the trend from the March select sale, Maryland-breds sold well above the sale s average at the April Ocala Breeders Sales Company s 2-year-old sale April in Ocala, Fla. Of eight Maryland-bred juveniles offered, seven sold. The Maryland-bred average was $110,857, compared to $90,245 for the overall sale. The top price among Maryland-breds was a filly by Friesan Fire consigned by Rick Lopez Training and Sales. The chestnut out of the Two Punch mare Duck the Punch dazzled at the under tack show, zipping an eighth in :09.80, just a fifth off the fastest time for the sale. She brought a final bid of $230,000 from LEB, agent for West Point Thoroughbreds and Team D. Bred by Glennie Martin and Country Life Farm, the filly failed to sell when offered as a weanling at the Fasig-Tipton October New York sale in She descends from a long line of Worthington Farm stakes winners her dam is a half-sister to Tim s Crossing and her second dam is a full-sister to Lady Beaumont. Puerto Rican champion Gale in the Vale is a daughter of Two Punch out of Duck the Punch s half-sister Vale Valley. Also bringing six figures was a chestnut filly by Dialed In out of Zazzle, by First Samurai. Sold from the consignment of Parrish Farms, agent, she was purchased by Doubles Partners Stables for $190,000. The filly, bred by Alan S. Kline Revocable Trust, clocked an eighth-mile in :10. She is another with a deep history in Maryland for her, descending from the line of Kline-bred stakes winners Unbridled Hope, Forestier, Peaceful Road and D Youville Nurse. Two juveniles by first-year Maryland sire Freedom Child were offered, and combined to sell for $215,000. Bringing six figures was a chestnut colt out of Final Humor (by Distorted Humor), a half-brother to stakes-placed Hot Fun and E Dubai s Humor. Simon Callaghan, agent, signed the ticket for $160,000. Sold with agent Top Line Sales, the colt sold initially for $22,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale. Bred by John D. Stuart, he is from the family of graded stakes winner Bank Audit. Friesan Fire and Freedom Child stand at Country Life Farm in Bel Air. R Maryland-bred Stakes Winners Bonus Points takes Parx Derby for first stakes triumph Despite getting a less than perfect trip, Three Diamonds Farm s Bonus Points rallied from last on the backstretch and outran six rivals to win the $100,000 Parx Derby at Parx Racing May 6. The 3-year-old son of Majestic Warrior trained by Todd Pletcher recorded the first stakes win of his career. Bred by Country Life Farm, Bonus Points was stakesplaced multiple times going into the Parx Derby. At 2, the New York-based colt broke his maiden at Belmont Park in October at miles in his third start, and followed with a third in Belmont s 1-mile Awad Stakes on the turf. He concluded the year with a second behind Maryland-bred champion 2-year-old male Greatbullsoffire in the Maryland Juvenile Futurity at Laurel on the main track. Less than a month later, Bonus Points contested the Grade 3 Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct and rallied to get up for second behind El Areeb. Bonus Points was off the board twice in graded company before making his Parx debut. Sent off as the fourth choice, Bonus Points was bumped, carried wide in the first turn and lost ground the entire trip. He caught even-money favorite Alex Again in the stretch and pulled away to win by lengths, getting the 1 mile

5 and 70 yards in 1: With the win, his record improved to , for earnings of $219,150. The Pons family s Country Life Farm purchased the Not For Love mare Baby Love at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Fall Mixed and Horses of Racing Age sale in October 2013 for $24,000 with Bonus Points in utero. At the time the dam of one winner, Maryland-bred Baby Love is out of Serenity Jane (by Affirmed). Her second dam, graded winner Illeria, also produced Grade 1-winning millionaire Include, additional stakes winners Magic Broad, Encaustic, Broad Rule and Magical Broad, and stakes-placed Implicit, Loaded Brush, Invent and Officer s Holiday. Baby Love was resold this past January at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Winter Mixed sale to dissolve a partnership, bringing $8,000 in foal to Super Ninety Nine, with Philip Birsh making the purchase. Her just turned yearling colt, also by Super Ninety Nine, sold for $20,000 to Three Diamonds Farm. Less than two weeks later, Baby Love s 5-year-old son Candid Desire won Aqueduct s Hollie Hughes Stakes, and now has career earnings of $312,314. Bonus Points was a $6,500 sales weanling at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic December Mixed sale in 2014, with Three Diamonds Farm listed as the buyer. 6 Maryland Thoroughbred Career Program participants chosen The Maryland Horse Industry Foundation announced the six participants for the inaugural Maryland Thoroughbred Career Program in May. Those selected were Sidney Boots (University of Kentucky), Katie Brooks (University of Maryland), Megan George (University of Maryland), Sara Gordon (Virginia Tech), Tabitha Gregory (University of Maryland) and John Piassek (Loyola University Maryland). We were thrilled to receive a large number of applications from high quality candidates; narrowing the group down to six was difficult, said MTCP coordinator Jordyn Egan. The level of interest in the program confirmed our hypothesis that there are many young people eager to learn more about careers in the Thoroughbred industry. It is an exciting time in Maryland, and we are honored to walk alongside the participants as their career paths come into focus. Maryland Horse Industry Foundation board member Jim Steele added, The MTCP is an exciting program that coincides well with the Maryland Horse Breeders Association s move to Goucher College. I believe that it will help young people get involved in various aspects of the Maryland horse industry that they may not have known about prior to this opportunity. MTCP participants, outfitted by EMBRACE THE RACE, will have access to the leaders of the Maryland Thoroughbred Industry during site visits exploring every- thing from breeding and sales to aftercare, racetrack management and beyond. Each participant will be encouraged to absorb the entire scope of the industry while refining specific areas of interest so that their next steps can be defined. The MTCP is an educational program presented by the Maryland Horse Industry Foundation, which serves the various educational and charitable needs of the Maryland horse industry. The 2017 MTCP runs June 5-10 and the participants journey may be followed via social media (@MarylandTB).
