1 FRIDAY 27 NOVEMBER 2015 Advertising/Editorial: Rasa Lila at the top of her game Rasa Lila, who has come of age in this campaign, will chase valuable black-type at Ellerslie tomorrow Time has served Rasa Lila (NZ) (Darci Brahma) well and she is in the right order to continue her winning ways at Ellerslie on Saturday. She really has strengthened up and she s a completely different horse this season, said Steven Ramsay, who trains the mare with his partner Julia Ritchie. Rasa Lila is unbeaten in two runs this preparation and the five-year-old will attempt to complete a hat-trick of wins in the Gr.3 Eagle Technology Stakes. We ll keep her to a mile at the moment even though she has won over 2100 metres, Ramsay said. She s got a really good turn of foot and she can run slick times. Rasa Lila won first-up over 1600m at Otaki last month and she repeated the dose earlier this month in an open handicap over the same trip at Ellerslie. She hasn t got any black type yet so that s the main objective with her, Ramsay said. She s out of a Sadler s Wells mare so she is very valuable. While Rasa Lila will stay at a shorter trip in the immediate future, she could move up in distance over the Christmas period. The Zabeel Classic over 2000 metres might be a nice race for her if she keeps taking the next steps, Ramsay said. The stable is also keen on the long-term staying prospects of Mopsy (NZ) (Mastercraftsman), who recently won first-up over 1800 metres at New Plymouth. She s furnished this time in and she was doing her best work in the last 50 metres to put two lengths on them, Ramsay said. She s bred to get two miles her mother (Popsy) won the Derby and without getting too carried away she could be a cups mare this time next year. NZ Racing Desk.

3 3 NZTM News FRIDAY 27 NOVEMBER 2015 Cunningham has strong hand in Wellington Stakes In form three-year-old Goodsav will tackle the Gr.3 Fasttrackinsurance Wellington Stakes at Otaki today Ron Cunningham will get two cracks at the Gr.3 Fasttrackinsurance Wellington Stakes (1600m) at Otaki today. The Upper Hutt owner will be represented by the form runners Goodsav (NZ) (Savabeel) and Shadows Cast (NZ) (Per Incanto). Goodsav, a Savabeel filly, is unbeaten from two starts and Shadows Cast, a Per Incanto gelding, has had a win and two seconds from three attempts. Cunningham races Shadows Cast on his own and is a member of the syndicate that races Goodsav. Goodsav is raced by the Goodfellas Syndicate, on lease from Waikato Stud. The Goodfellas are a group of sport and racing enthusiasts who meet in Wellington for lunch two or three times a year. We have another lunch scheduled next week - it should be a good one, Cunningham said. Cunningham has been a longstanding owner in both the racing and harness codes while prominent bloodstock agent Phill Cataldo is another syndicate member. Shadows Cast is trained by Mark Oulaghan and won a 1400m maiden at Awapuni before finishing second, beaten a head, in a 1200m three-year-old event at the New Zealand Cup meeting. I think he s pretty smart and there have been a couple of offers for him, said Cunningham, who has the horse on lease, with a right of purchase. I think he will get a mile. Johnathon Parkes rides Shadows Cast at Otaki, with Lisa Allpress, who had ridden the horse in all his previous runs, preferring Goodsav. Continued on page 4

She was also offered the mounts on The Wolf (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) and Perfect Harmonee (NZ) (Nadeem) and had won races on all four horses. They are all nice horses, Allpress said. But Goodsav has Oaks written all over her. I ve never been able to win an Oaks and she could be my opportunity. Goodsav, who is trained by Patrick Campbell, won a maiden 1200m at Woodville on debut before recording a stylish win in a rating m at Hastings. Cambridge galloper Rangipo (Stryker) was a $3.50 favourite for the Wellington Stakes, with Goodsav and Tavago (NZ) (Tavistock) sharing the second line of betting at $5.50, while Shadows Cast is rated a $13 chance. 5 5 NZTM News FRIDAY 27 NOVEMBER 2015 Logan pair set to soar in Ellerslie feature Donna Logan has used the Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial as the platform to launch the careers of several stable stars so far and she s hoping that s no different on Saturday when she saddles Sultan Of Swing (NZ) (Bachelor Duke) and Valley Girl (NZ) (Mastercraftsman) in the Ellerslie three-year-old feature. The Ruakaka trainer has an enviable record in the 1500m set-weights and penalties race over the past three years, having won the race with Rising Romance (NZ) (Ekraar) in 2012 and with Habibi (NZ) (Ekraar) the following year before producing Midnitemagicman (NZ) (Tavistock) to finish second to Tavy (NZ) (Tavistock) last year. Both Rising Romance and Habibi went on to become Group One Classic winners for Logan, while Midnitemagicman finished fifth in this year s Gr.1 New Zealand Derby before he was sold to Hong Kong interests. It s not a race we really target or anything. It just seems to be the way it pans out, Logan said. It just fits into where we are with the horses we ve got coming through. Both Bachelor Duke gelding Sultan Of Swing and Mastercraftsman filly Valley Girl go into the race at their second start, having produced smart debut wins. Sultan Of Swing overcame a tough trip to score by 1 1/4 lengths at Ellerslie last month, while Valley Girl ran out a dominant 2 1/2-length winner at Avondale earlier this month. Neither were particularly well favoured with barriers 14 and 16 respectively but with rain forecast for Friday and Saturday, Logan was hopeful the draws could yet mean the pair get the advantage of the best part of the track. Logan has booked Mark Du Plessis for Sultan Of Swing. He s a very smart horse, Logan said of Sultan Of Swing. He s a horse who is really above average and we ve given him plenty of time to develop so hopefully we are about to see the benefits of that now. He s ready to go a slashing race. He did a fair bit of work last time but he still won with a bit in hand. We re hoping he ll be Derby-bound. We ve nominated him and as a halfbrother to [Group One winner and Group Two winner up to 2000m] Suavito and with what she s doing, we d like to think the staying ability is there. Kelly Myers retains the ride on Valley Girl, who also holds a nomination for this season s Gr.1 New Zealand Derby. She s an Oaks filly through and through in my eyes - and maybe even a Derby filly, Logan said. We really like her and I really wouldn t like to split them going into this race. The Premier, Select and Festival Sales have a combined 1378 yearlings entered across the six days of selling, starting on Monday 25 January at Karaka. NZB s National Yearling Sales Series continues to deliver results, having produced 21 Group 1 winners last season, the most of any Australasian auction house for the third consecutive year. With just 21% of Australasia s auctioned yearling crop going through the Karaka sale ring, NZB has sold 37% of Group 1 winning yearling graduates, more than any other sales company in Australasia over the past five seasons. A $400,000 Karaka purchase by Te Akau s David Ellis, Love Triangle (NZ) (Encosta de Lago) made a flying start to her career with a debut win at Ruakaka before finishing sixth in the Gr.3 Gold Trail Stakes and she was then put aside. David made the right call to spell her after that, rather than going on to Riccarton, and she has put on weight and developed, said Jamie Richards, who prepares the Encosta de Lago filly with Stephen Autridge. Smart 3YO with Waller Sacred Surfer (Choisir) is a recent addition to the powerful Chris Waller stable. The three-year-old won two trials and was a debut winner at Te Aroha last month for Cambridge trainer Tony Pike before the Raffles Farm-owned gelding was transferred to Sydney. He has been a great source of winners, Highview Stud s Brent Gillovic said. He has been getting virtually zero patronage over the last three seasons so at least he ll serve some mares up there. Danroad s best performer has been the Gr.1 TJ Smith Classic winner Rockdale while his son Down The Road was a Gr.2 Championship Stakes winner and ran second in the Gr.1 NZ Derby. In the mid-eighties these types of stallions would have covered good books of mares. Often his type would be the first horse with a full book with mares coming from people who bred to race. Sadly that is but a distant memory now, Gillovic said.
