3 DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Sunday, January 17, 2016 PAGE 3 TRIPLE CROWN SIRE LINE IN SPOTLIGHT FOR 2016 By Joe Nevills There is no denying the hype that surrounds a Triple Crown winner when he goes off to stud and the résumé boost his sire receives for adding his part to the feat. What s more uncommon is a grandsire that stands to benefit from a Triple Crown win. When the Ashford Stud breeding shed opens for business in February, American Pharoah will be only the fourth of the 12 Triple Crown winners to begin his stallion career while his sire and grandsire are still active themselves. His sire, WinStar Farm resident Pioneerof the Nile, and grandsire, Empire Maker of Gainesway, will be among the Triple Crown winner s stiffest competition for mares in his debut season, with all three coming from similar blood but offering enough differences to make each stand apart. American Pharoah brings with him the excitement of his recent ontrack exploits and the intrigue of what his stud career might hold. Pioneerof the Nile, still early in his career, enters the breeding season more proven than ever, with winners or placers in Triple Crown races from both of his first two crops. Empire Maker brings with him a little of both, having just returned from a five-year stay in Japan after beginning his stud career at Juddmonte Farms, arguably seeing his most success in the U.S. after leaving the country. Anytime you breed mares and you re catering to breeders, it s different strokes for different folks, said Elliott Walden, president and CEO of WinStar Farm. Some people like the older horse, some people would like the young, new horse off the track. For me, I like the fact that Pioneerof the Nile is the up-and-coming star, that he s the one that s been able to sire a Triple Crown winner. American Pharoah joins Affirmed, Omaha, and Gallant Fox among the Triple Crown winners with two generations of their sire line still at stud upon their debut. Barbara D. The three remained active for 11 years, until Gallant Fox overlapped his sire and grandsire Teddy for six seasons, from 1931 to American Pharoah s situation is unique in that he is the only one of the four Triple Crown winners in this group that did not debut at stud at the same farm as his sire or grandsire. What ties these Triple Crown winners together is that they all came along early in their respective sires careers. Omaha hailed from the first crop of Gallant Fox, who himself was a member of Sir Gallahad III s second crop. American Pharoah also came out of the second crop from his sire. Affirmed was the outlier of the bunch, coming out of the sixth crop by Exclusive Native. That fact sits perfectly fine with Walden, who said the success of Pioneerof the Nile s runners over their first two crops on the track sets up the still-young stallion well for his recent books of mares, with expectations high for even better mares going forward. However, he acknowledged that breeders now have more sources to tap into that bloodline than they did just last year. I think the interesting thing for the whole American Pharoah/Pioneerof the Nile/ Empire Maker thing is that you have all three coming in and last year you just had Pioneerof the Nile, Walden said. It gave breeders a bit of a different option on which one they wanted to breed to that were thinking about breeding to the Unbridled line through Empire Maker. Skipping back a generation, Empire Maker is the youngest grandsire of a Triple Crown winner to still be active at stud, having recently turned 16. Raise a Native was 19 when Affirmed joined the Spendthrift roster, while Sir Gallahad III was 17 and Teddy was 18. Empire Maker enters his 13th season at stud, while the other three stallions in that elite group sired 18 crops or Continued on page 5

5 DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Sunday, January 17, 2016 PAGE 5 Continued from page 3 more over the course of their lifetimes. One of the most obvious dividing factors among the three stallions is their price points. There is little to be offered from a historical context in terms of comparative public market pricing. Affirmed and his line, the most recent example, stood for private fees during the 1980 breeding season at Spendthrift. American Pharoah will have the most expensive advertised fee of the group, standing for $200,000. The rate makes him the highest-priced first-year stallion in North America since Horse of the Year Ghostzapper, who stood for the same fee in 2006, and ties him with Claiborne Farm resident War Front for the second-highest fee in North America for the coming season. Empire Maker, who stands at Gainesway in a partnership between the farm and Don Alberto Corp., will stand for $100,000 in his return to the U.S. Michael Hernon, Gainesway s director of sales, was well aware of the ideal timing the partnership had in reintroducing the 16-year-old Empire Maker back into the U.S. market. He said the stallion has seen a healthy mix of interest from both domestic and international breeders, and is expected to breed about 135 mares in his return season. I think the success and emergence of American Pharoah and his success in winning the Triple Crown has put real focus on Empire Maker himself, and obviously his son Pioneerof the Nile, Hernon said. I think Empire Maker is held in high regard, he s proven, and he was obviously a top runner. I think the expectation is high and he was very well-received at $100,000. Hernon said that breeders were keenly aware of Empire Maker s blood ties to the Triple Crown winner, but most who sought out the stallion did so for his own merit, which includes siring 30 graded or group stakes winners from his first nine crops of racing age. I think it s well known, but we ve also been making people aware of his versatility to get top runners, both colts and fillies, Hernon said, mentioning three-time champion Royal Delta as an example of the stallion s ability to get top females. Clearly, American Pharoah finished up his racing career in great style with the Breeders Cup win at Keeneland, so he keeps the focus on himself, and of course his sire and Empire Maker. Pioneerof the Nile sits in the middle, both in the sire line and by his 2016 stud fee. The 10-year-old will stand for $125,000 this year, and Walden said he had 125 mares in his book. The neat thing about it is Bob Baffert was quoted during that whole run saying that American Pharoah s greatness comes from Pioneerof the Nile, Walden said. Empire Maker gives you a chance to get that Derby horse, but the bottom side [Star of Goshen], out of a Lord At War mare, she was a freak with true speed, and American Pharoah has that galloping speed, which he thinks comes from the side of Pioneerof the Nile s pedigree. It s just exciting to be a part of it. WinStar Farm has established itself as a believer in the Empire Maker sire line, also standing Grade 1 winner and dual classic-placed Bodemeister, whose first foals are 2-yearolds of 2016 and were among the best received progeny of first-crop yearlings during last year s auction season. We feel like we ve got the two best sons of Empire Maker at stud, Walden said. 6 PAGE 6 Sunday, January 17, 2016 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING 2015 STALLION HONORS TAPIT Leading Kentucky general sire by earnings and winners Gray or Roan Horse Foaled Feb. 27, 2001 in Kentucky Pulpit 94 Tap Your Heels 96 A.P. Livingston By Joe Nevills Tapit had the kind of year in 2014 that most stallions never compile over the course of their lifetimes. In 2015, he went even further. For a second straight year, the 15-yearold son of Pulpit topped the North American stallion ranks by earnings, with 315 runners compiling $17,677,580. That figure easily surpassed second-place Medaglia d Oro, who finished the year with 254 runners earning $13,014,924. What is impressive about this accomplishment is that Tapit clinched the North American earnings record in November, giving him an entire month to pad his lead. What makes it truly amazing is that it was his own record he was distancing. In 2014, Tapit surpassed the previous earnings record set by Smart Strike in 2007 by the Breeders Cup in early November, meaning he had nearly two months to add to the most lucrative season a North American stallion ever had. A year later, his foals needed only 11 of the 12 months to outpace an already historic figure. Tapit resides at Gainesway in Lexington, Ky., where he will stand his 12th year at stud for a fee of $300,000, North America s highest advertised fee for the 2016 breeding season. He can get you any kind of horse, said Michael Hernon, Gainesway s director of sales. He really moves his mares up, and they run at all distances on all surfaces. I think their one basic characteristic is their competitiveness at the highest level of racing. They re really tough horses with great cardios, they stay sound, and they generally have a lot of speed and the ability to carry it. In setting the earnings record, Tapit was obviously helped by a healthy share of KENTUCKY GENERAL SIRES BY 2015 PROGENY EARNINGS RANK NAME (BORN, SIRE) 2016 FARM 2016 STUD FEE RNRS WNRS 2015 EARNINGS 1 Tapit (2001, Pulpit) Gainesway $300, $17,677,580 2 Medaglia d Oro (1999, El Prado) Darley 150, ,014,924 3 Pioneerof the Nile (2006, Empire Maker) WinStar Farm 125, ,580,716 4 Candy Ride (1999, Ride the Rails) Lane s End 60, ,459,378 5 Kitten s Joy (2001, El Prado) Ramsey Farm 100, ,230,953 stakes winners, but he did it with quantity as well. His 175 winners topped the North American ranks, bettering runners-up Candy Ride and Giant s Causeway, who were each represented by 156 winners. A group of familiar faces led the way among Tapit s progeny, with 2014 champion Untapable and Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist each returning to earn Grade 1 wins. The latter was one of two Eclipse Award finalists for Tapit in 2015, along with multiple Grade 2-winning juvenile Mohaymen. Tapit s highest-earning runner was Frosted, whose campaign included wins in the Grade 1 Wood Memorial and the Grade 2 Pennsylvania Derby, both $1 million races. His clashes with Triple Crown winner American Pharoah also earned him a runner-up effort in the Belmont Stakes, a third in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes, and a fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby. Others by Tapit to claim graded stakes victories in 2015 included Grade 1 winner Constitution; Grade 2 winners Race Day and Just Wicked; and Grade 3 winner Divining Rod, who was third in the Preakness Stakes. On the turf, Tapit s runners were led by Grade 1 winner Ring Weekend; Grade 3 winners Prospect Park, Tin Type Gal, White Rose, and Walk Close; and Grade 1-placed Closing Bell. Tapit s reign at the top of the auction market continued through 2015 as well, siring the most-expensive offerings of the yearling and juvenile portions of the North American auction calendar. The yearling was a colt out of the winning Mr. Greeley mare Silver Colors, herself a daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors, who sold to Mandy Pope s Whisper Hill Farm for $2.1 million at the Keeneland September yearling sale. Tapit was the September sale s leading stallion by total receipts for a fourth straight year and had the auction s highest- or co-highest-priced offering for the second year in a row. A Tapit filly made history during the juvenile season when bloodstock agency Solis/Litt went to $1.9 million for a daughter of the unraced Silver Deputy mare Silver Wolf to make her the mostexpensive horse to ever sell at an Ocala Breeders Sales Co. auction, changing hands at its spring sale of 2-year-olds in training in April. The filly was later named Inheritance. I think the belief is that Tapit can get you a high probability of a graded stakes winner or a Grade 1 winner by one of his progeny, Hernon said. His fillies are going to be in strong demand going forward based on him, their ability, and the very strong pedigrees that they re out of now. I m sure Tapit will emerge as a top broodmare sire in his own right, and his influence through his daughters will endure and be significant in the years ahead.

Already a successful young stallion, the son of Johannesburg was completing the best season of his career. Scat Daddy led all North American sires with 30 individual stakes winners in Powered by his chief earner, multiple graded stakes winner and one-time classics contender El Kabeir, the stallion rose to ninth on the general sire list the best placing yet in those ranks for the leading freshman sire of Off that success, the horse was set to join the elite with an elevated stud fee of $100,000 a major boost from $35,000 for 2016 at Coolmore s Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky. Everyone here at Ashford is very upset as he was a smashing horse with a great career ahead of him, Ashford manager Dermot Ryan said. Scat Daddy won multiple graded stakes in both seasons he raced, taking the Grade 1 Champagne and Grade 2 Sanford as a juvenile and the Grade 1 Florida Derby and Grade 2 Fountain of Youth as a 3-year-old. He finished unplaced in the 2007 Kentucky Derby, the final start of his career. He captured 5 of 9 career starts and earned more than $1.3 million. Scat Daddy has consistently turned out stakes horses since entering stud at Ashford in His breakout 2015 racing season was helped along by a strong juvenile crop including Grade 1 Frizette Stakes winner Nickname, and Acapulco, who defeated elders in Group 2 company at the Royal Ascot meeting. Scat Daddy finished second on the juvenile sire list for 2015, trailing only Ashford s breakout freshman sire Uncle Mo. During his career, Scat Daddy has sired 70 stakes winners to date, led by multiple Grade 1 winner Lady of Shamrock and Group 1 winner No Nay Never, and multiple graded/group winners Daddy Long Legs, Handsome Mike, Daddy Nose Best, Frac Daddy, and Dice Flavor. Scat Daddy also was a popular shuttle sire for Coolmore, finishing as the leading sire in Chile in 2013 and 2014 and represented by champions Il Campione, Dacita, Solaria, and El Bromista in that country. Dacita, now based in the U.S., was a graded stakes winner at Saratoga this year to bolster her sire s résumé. Among active Kentucky stallions of 2016, Medaglia d Oro takes over as the reigning leader by stakes winners, as he edged top general sire Tapit in that category. Medaglia d Oro, who is based at Darley s Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Ky., finished second to Tapit on the 2015 general sire list with progeny earnings of $13,014,924. After finishing fourth on the freshman list again, to Tapit in 2008, the stallion has been a top-20 sire every year since, finishing in the top 10 in four of seven years. Medaglia d Oro has been known for siring top fillies since 2009 Horse of the Year Rachel Alexandra emerged from his first crop, followed two years later by another Kentucky Oaks winner, Plum Pretty. An exciting filly once again led the way for the stallion in 2015, as Songbird was considered a virtual lock to earn the Eclipse Award as champion 2-year-old filly. She won all four of her starts, three of those Grade 1 events, by a combined 22 lengths, capped by a 5 3/4-length score in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies. Medaglia d Oro s other top runners in 2015 included Grade 1 Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap winner Mshawish, who finished third in the Group 1 Dubai Turf; Australian champion Vancouver; and multiple graded stakes winners Sentiero Italia, Valid, and Lochte. Medaglia d Oro, a 17-year-old son of El Prado, earned top-level victories in the Travers Stakes, Whitney Handicap, and Donn Handicap during a career in which he bankrolled $5,754,720. Reinagel By Joe Nevills The group of 12 horses to win the Triple Crown is about as exclusive as a club gets in any sport. Just as select is the group of 12 horses that sired them. Pioneerof the Nile became the newest member of that group on a June afternoon in New York when his champion offspring American Pharoah crossed the finish line unchallenged in the Belmont Stakes to sweep the series of classic races. It would have been an unforgettable year for Pioneerof the Nile had he stopped there, but American Pharoah also chalked up wins in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational Stakes and Breeders Cup Classic before calling it a career. American Pharoah almost certainly will be named Horse of the Year. American Pharoah s single-year North American record earnings of $8,288,800 helped propel Pioneerof the Nile to the top of North America s active sire list by average progeny earnings, with his 120 runners making an average of $96,506 in He finished second overall behind the pensioned A.P. Indy, whose 49 runners banked an average of $100,360 last year. Pioneerof the Nile s $11,580,716 in combined progeny earnings also placed him third on the 2015 Kentucky general sire list, behind Tapit and Medaglia d Oro. Pioneerof the Nile will stand his seventh season at stud in 2016, residing at WinStar Farm in Versailles, Ky., with an advertised fee of $125,000. The fee more than doubled his rate of $60,000 in 2015, and is more than six times his 2014 fee of $20,000. You never expect to have a horse at the farm that s the sire of a Triple Crown winner, said Elliott Walden, WinStar s president and CEO. It s exciting for WinStar and all the employees, and following American Pharoah s progress right along was really KENTUCKY GENERAL SIRES BY 2015 AVERAGE EARNINGS PER RUNNER (MINIMUM 10 RUNNERS) RANK NAME (BORN, SIRE) 2016 FARM 2016 STUD FEE RNRS WNRS AVG. Then, to have it with a horse that s 9 years old and has his stud career in front of him was really exciting. Though American Pharoah was clearly the standout runner for Pioneerof the Nile in 2015, his body of runners proved that the Triple Crown winner was no fluke, with Grade 1-placed runners on both dirt and turf last year. Leading the charge was Midnight Storm, winner of the Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap and runner-up in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile, both on turf. Also performing well on the grass was Grade 2-placed Courtier, who won the $206,000 Centaur Stakes at Indiana Grand. Pioneerof the Nile s leading dirt runners included Grade 1-placed stakes winner Catch My Drift, stakes winners Eighth Wonder and Cash Control, Grade 2-placed Jojo Warrior, and Grade 3-placed Pioneerof the West. Though still a relatively young stallion his 2-year-olds of 2016 will be his fourth crop of racing age Pioneerof the Nile is already beginning to branch out into the next phase of his career, where he must prove himself as a sire of sires and producers. American Pharoah will headline the class of incoming stallions for the 2016 breeding season, standing at Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., for $200,000. That price marks the highest entry point for a stallion since Horse of the Year Ghostzapper commanded the same amount in Walden said he expected the number and quality of Pioneerof the Nile offspring to enter the breeding pool will rise exponentially in the coming years as the makeup of his book evolves. The next step is really the last two years, Walden said. Since his horses hit the racetrack, his books have gotten really good. For the first four years of his stallion career, he bred the dams of four Grade 1 winners. In the last two years, he s bred 25 mares that were Grade 1 winners themselves or dams of Grade 1 winners. He had 13 mares in those four years that were either graded winners themselves or graded producers, and it was over 60 last year alone. His future is bright. The mare quality is improved. It s going to be exciting to see what he does with the next phase of his stallion career and the mares that he has. Though pensioned since 2011, A.P. Indy has carried one of the all-time great careers at stud into his 18th and final crop, led by Eclipse Award finalist Honor Code, whose 2015 résumé featured wins in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap and Whitney Stakes, and a third in the Breeders Cup Classic. A.P. Indy, a 27-year-old son of Seattle Slew, stood his entire career at Lane s End in Versailles, Ky., and is living out his retirement in the farm s stallion facility.

Uncle Mo, who stands at Coolmore s Ashford Stud in Versailles, Ky., led not only the freshman list but also the overall juvenile sire list, as his 28 winners on the season contributed to his progeny earnings of $3,632,314. The earnings are a freshman-season record, shattering the $2,811,337 amassed in 2008 by Tapit, now the reigning leading general sire. Uncle Mo s bankroll outpaced runner-up freshman Twirling Candy ($1,167,144 and 25 winners), who stands at Lane s End in Versailles, Ky., by nearly $2.5 million. Uncle Mo, by the late Indian Charlie, won his three starts as a juvenile by a combined 23 1/4 lengths, earning a divisional Eclipse Award by a near-unanimous vote. Trained by Todd Pletcher for owner Mike Repole, the colt burst onto the national scene with a runaway 14 1/4-length victory in his Saratoga debut. He added open-lengths scores in both the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park and the Breeders Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs. Although illness caused him to miss the Triple Crown series, Uncle Mo continued on at 3 to win the Grade 2 Kelso Handicap over older horses and was multiple Grade 1 placed. He won 5 of 8 career starts and missed the board only once, earning $1,606,000. The Uncle Mo filly Gomo, racing for Nyquist s connections, was stakes-placed twice in California before also making a successful raid on Keeneland to win the Grade 1 Alcibiades Stakes. Gomo, who was forced to miss the Breeders Cup due to injury, has been on the board in all five career starts. Uncle Vinny won the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes via disqualification, while Thrilled was multiple graded stakesplaced in New York in the summer and fall. Both are trained by Pletcher, who sees similarities between his young charges and their sire. We are seeing a lot of them that have similar physiques, Pletcher said Breeders Cup week. He seems to be putting some size to most of them. And a lot of them have that big, long stride that he had. For a horse that was as fast as he was, he had a huge leap, and we re seeing that with some of his babies. He s off to an impressive start, for sure. Uncle Mo is also represented by stakes winners Forevamo, Lost Raven, Mo Tom, and Uncle Brennie; graded stakes-placed Mokat; and stakes-placed winners Mo for the Money and Conquest Babayaga. Laoban recently finished third in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes as a maiden. Following Uncle Mo and Twirling Candy on the North American freshman sire list was Girolamo, who stands at Darley in Lexington, Ky. Next came First Dude, Archarcharch, Giant Surprise, Big Drama, Paddy O Prado, Gone Astray, and Court Vision. Archarcharch, Paddy O Prado, and Court Vision all stand at Spendthrift Farm in Lexington. 15 DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Sunday, January 17, 2016 PAGE STALLION HONORS A.P. Livingston By Mary Simon Twenty-three years ago, A.P. Indy entered stud at Lane s End in Kentucky with high expectations. And why not? He was gorgeous, fast, and impeccably bred. The son of Seattle Slew out of Weekend Surprise, by Secretariat, did not disappoint. His first crop, 47 foals of 1994, featured 13 stakes winners and two stakes-placed runners a whopping 38 percent of starters including future top sire Pulpit and a trio of Grade 1-winning fillies in Tomisue s Delight, Royal Indy, and Runup the Colors, the latter boding well for his future as a broodmare sire. Scroll ahead two-plus decades. A.P. Indy was pensioned from breeding in 2011, after racking up two leading sire titles and overall stats at least as impressive as those of his own legendary sire. He had established himself not only as a spectacular progenitor of racehorses (163 stakes winners 17 percent of career starters to date), but, more importantly, as a stallion whose imprint on the American Thoroughbred gene pool would successfully span the generations ahead. Sons such as Pulpit, Bernardini, Malibu Moon, Flatter, Congrats, Mineshaft, Majestic Warrior, and Jump Start, paternal grandsons Tapit, Sky Mesa, and Lucky Pulpit (sire of 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome), and rising stars named Girolamo, Wilburn, Friesan Fire, and Discreetly Mine are ensuring that his name won t soon disappear from the top stirp of sought-after American pedigrees. In 2015, male-line descendants of A.P. Indy occupied five of the 25 leading spots on the general sire list, including Tapit in the No. 1 position. After twice reigning as America s premier sire, in 2003 and 2006, A.P. Indy now finds himself atop the broodmare sire KENTUCKY BROODMARE SIRES BY 2015 PROGENY EARNINGS RANK NAME (BORN, SIRE) RNRS WNRS SWS STK WINS 2015 EARNINGS 1 A.P. Those numbers placed the 1992 Horse of the Year safely ahead of second-ranked Unbridled s Song, with Storm Cat slipping to third. Whereas Unbridled s Song and Storm Cat each had a home-run horse among their maternal grand-offspring of 2015 (Carpe Diem and Honor Code, respectively), curiously, A.P. Indy did not. His black-type winners as a broodmare sire did not include a single North American Grade 1 victor, though lifetime to date his daughters have been responsible for 13 such topflight runners among them champion fillies Royal Delta and Wait a While, and Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver. His highest profile performer was Ghostzapper s track-record-breaking millionaire son Moreno, winner of the Charles Town Classic. A.P. Indy s mares also sent out 2015 Grade 2 winners Ironicus, Tiz Shea D, Protonico, and Dramedy; Grade 3 victors Imagining and Far From Over; and Irish Group 3 winner Moviesta. His 29 stakeswinning maternal grandsons and granddaughters placed him second internationally in that numerical category behind only deceased Danehill, with 31. As with almost any great progenitor, A.P. Indy has crossed efficiently with a variety of bloodlines, though he seems to favor some over others. In 2015 his broodmares produced four stakes winners by 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow runners who thus carried a 4x3 cross to Seattle Slew. Best of those was Grade 2 Indiana Derby winner Tiz Shea D. A.P. Indy mares have also proven good crosses for Distorted Humor and Hard Spun, getting three 2015 black-type winners by each stallion. With his 18th and final crop foals of 2011 stellar to the end with Grade 1 winners Honor Code and Got Lucky A.P. Indy figures to play a prominent role on sire and broodmare sire lists through the foreseeable future. The now-retired Lane s End patriarch is without question one of a handful of the most breed-shaping American sires of the modern era (think: Storm Cat, Mr. Prospector, Seattle Slew, Danzig, Unbridled). Like his sire before him, he has displayed profound top-to-bottom genetic potency, and his breeding sons and daughters are proving superb producers. While he is largely responsible for keeping the oncepredominant Bold Ruler male line alive into the 21st century, his daughters are crossing spectacularly with everything put to them. Perhaps most notably, A.P. Indy has reinfused the golden virtue of stamina into an American breed desperately in need of it.

Strong Contender, who relocated to R Star from Florida for the 2015 breeding season, reigned as Indiana s top active or incoming sire by 2015 progeny earnings. He had 15 winners from 42 starters for earnings of $649,527. Former Indiana resident Chief Seattle, who died in 2011, was represented by 23 winners from 33 starters and earnings of $591,384. Strong Contender, a 13-year-old son of Maria s Mon, had a brief but successful career in which he won half of his eight starts and competed consistently in graded stakes. After winning his first two outings, he finished third in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes in just his third career start. He went on to take the Grade 2 Dwyer Stakes by 7 3/4 lengths, and the Grade 2 Super Derby by a length over eventual older male champion Lawyer Ron. He also finished third in the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational and the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes. As a stallion, Strong Contender is represented by seven career stakes winners to date, led by Grand Contender, who won the Grade 3 Texas Mile and Grade 3 Lone Star Park Handicap in 2014 and won or placed in seven other stakes in 2013 and His daughter Awesome Fire won the 2012 Wonder Where Stakes, third leg of the Canadian Triple Tiara. Strong Contender added to his tally in 2015 with Days Ride, who took the Stud Muffin Stakes at Aqueduct, and Lady Contender, who won a trio of stakes in Nebraska and Colorado. Multiple stakes winner Miss Da Point finished third in the Dancin Renee Stakes at Belmont Park a race won by Eclipse Award finalist La Verdad and also third in the Union Avenue Stakes at Saratoga to rank as her sire s chief earner in R Star Stallions has a roster of five stallions for the 2016 season, including Deputy Storm, another top-10 sire in Indiana. Also holding a strong hand in the Hoosier State for 2016 is Swifty Farms in Seymour, which has a six-stallion roster, headed by Unbridled Express and Pass Rush, respectively third and fourth on the leading sire list behind Strong Contender and Chief Seattle. Unbridled Express, by the late Unbridled s Song, also finished as the state s leading juvenile sire for Skylord, standing at Breakway Farm in Dillsboro, was the only one of Indiana s trio of freshman sires to have multiple winners. That was enough for the son of Sky Mesa to finish fifth on the juvenile sire list. OHIO MAPLETON SIRES FINISH ATOP 2015 OHIO LIST By Joe Nevills The Ohio breeding program remains in the midst of significant upheaval as the market continues to adjust to the state s new tracks and expanded gaming. At the forefront of this critical period has been runners sired by residents of Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm in Polk, which accounted for the top two sires by progeny earnings in Leading the way was Cowtown Cat, with 47 winners and progeny earnings of $1,814,628. The 12-year-old son of Distorted Humor arrived at Mapleton Thoroughbred Farm for the 2015 breeding season after previously standing at Journeyman Stud in Florida, and his first Ohio-sired foals will arrive this spring. He will stand the 2016 season for a fee of $2,500. Cowtown Cat, who has five crops of racing age, was led in 2015 by stakes winners Calgary Cat and Cat Trap. Other notable runners included stakes-placed Sunrise Kitty, My Cowboy, and Model Citizen. Calgary Cat was named Canada s champion sprinter in On the track, Cowtown Cat won 4 of 16 starts and earned $562,228, led by victories in the Grade 2 Illinois Derby and Grade 3 Gotham Stakes. Bred in Kentucky by Gulf Coast Farms Bloodstock, Cowtown Cat is out of the winning Storm Cat mare Tom s Cat, who is the dam of two winners from four runners. He is from the family of Grade 3 winner Crafty But Sweet. Finishing second was Mobil, whose first Ohio-sired foals are 2-year-olds of 2016, after beginning his stud career in Ontario. Mobil, a 16-year-old son of Langfuhr, had 16 winners in 2015 and combined progeny earnings of $862,924. He will stand for $2,500. Canada s champion older horse of 2004, Mobil was led last year by stakes-placed Sorry About That and Obeah Woman. A trio of veterans will highlight the new additions to the state s stallion ranks in 2016, instantly asserting themselves as some of the state s top sires by progeny earnings. Hand Ride Stables in Dublin will add Maimonides, who stands for an advertised fee of $2,500. The 11-year-old son of Vindication previously resided at WinStar Farm in Kentucky. City Weekend comes to Meadow Springs Farm in Georgetown after previously residing at the Equine Veterinary Hospital of Northern Indiana, and the 14-yearold son of Carson City will stand for $2,000. Added Edge, a 16-year-old Smart Strike horse and perennial leading sire in Iowa, was purchased by Raimonde Farms in Wooster for the 2016 season, where he will stand for $1,500. Kentucky Dane retained his spot as Ohio s leading stallion among those with state-sired runners, with four winners and earnings of $480,594, ranking him sixth overall. The bulk of those earnings were made by Jac s Fact, a five-time stakes winner in His 10 foals to race last year included stakes-placed runners Hope s Frog Song, Circle Can Run, and Mom Genes. Kentucky Dane, a 16-year-old son of Danehill, stands at Raimonde Farms for an advertised fee of $1,000.

For the third consecutive year, the relatively young stallion is the Prairie State s top active stallion. Road Ruler, a 14-year-old son of the late Unbridled s Song standing at J.B. Stables in Burnt Prairie, Ill., was represented by 22 winners from 37 starters for earnings of $667,767 in That was enough to edge the late Cherokee Rap, who died in 2012, represented by 27 winners from 38 starters for $625,035. The season continued the success of Road Ruler, who first burst onto the scene as Illinois s leading freshman sire in He finished second to Cherokee Rap by progeny earnings in both 2013 and 2014, making him the state s leading active sire. Road Ruler was bred in Kentucky by Taylor Made Farm which stood his late sire and Brian Kahn. An $800,000 yearling, he won three of his first five starts, with all three victories coming at Fair Grounds. In his career, he competed for three seasons in Louisiana, Kentucky, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Oklahoma, taking 4 of 15 starts. Road Ruler s 2015 season was led by the consistent Canette, who became her sire s fourth career stakes horse when she finished third in the Pershing Handicap at Hawthorne. Armando s Star was his sire s chief earner of the year, banking $88,566 in a busy 14-start campaign. Road Ruler s progeny represented their sire well on multiple different surfaces including synthetic racing surfaces, which have dwindled in number in the North America. With Illinois one of the final states where synthetic-surfaces figures are meaningful, due to the presence of Arlington Park s Polytrack, Road Ruler led the state s sire list in the category. Straight Line, a son of Boundary standing at Fairberry Farm in Waterloo, Ill., topped the state s turf sire list, with Road Ruler third. Third on the leading sire list was Cashel Castle, standing at Hill N Dale Farm in Barrington, Ill. The son of Silver Ghost was the state s leading 2-year-old sire, with Road Ruler finishing third. IOWA SHORE BREEZE LEADS IOWA S SIRES IN 2015 By Joe Nevills Shore Breeze ended Added Edge s three-year reign at the top of Iowa s sire standings by earnings, but both stallions walked away from 2015 with their own victories. Shore Breeze topped the overall 2015 earnings list among Iowa stallions, with 25 winners and progeny earnings of $634,879. However, the 18-year-old son of Danzig relocated to Iowa for the 2014 breeding season, making his first Iowasired foals yearlings of Among the stallions with Iowa-sired runners, veteran Added Edge once again led the way, with 25 winners and earnings of $539,546. However, Added Edge moves to Raimonde Farms in Ohio for the 2016 season, leaving Woke Up Dreamin as the top returning stallion with state-sired runners, featuring 12 winners and earnings of $383,713. Prior to arriving at the Iowa State University Horse Farm in Ames, Iowa, Shore Breeze established himself as the top sire in neighboring Illinois, leading the state by earnings from 2010 through Throughout stints in Kentucky and Illinois, his leading runners included Grand Obsession, winner of the $100,000 Lady Charles Town Stakes in 2008, and stakes-placed Johnnies Breeze and Chantilly Lady. He also sired The Elevator, who earned $363,743 over seven seasons of racing. Now with 10 crops of racing age, Shore Breeze was led in 2015 by Creative Art, winner of the Robert S. Molaro Handicap and third in the Blackhawk Handicap, both at Hawthorne. Shore Breeze won 4 of 22 starts during his racing career and earned $152,948. His best season came in 2001, when he won the Gallant Serenade Stakes and finished second in the Zwaanendael Stakes, both at Delaware Park. Bred in Virginia by Morven Stud, Shore Breeze is out of the Grade 1-placed Gulch mare Sea Breezer, whose eight winners from nine foals to race includes Mexican stakes winner Justicialista. His second dam is champion Lakeville Miss, with extended family members including Grade 1 winners Mogambo and Dortmund. Shore Breeze will stand for $1,000 during the 2016 breeding season. Added Edge, a 16-year-old son of Smart Strike, turned in another solid year in 2015, led by stakes winner Nic a Jack and Sweetedge, and stakes-placed Lil Apollo and Foxy Fleda. He previously stood at Special K Stable in Runnells, Iowa. Woke Up Dreamin was led in 2015 by stakes winners Dreamin and One Fine Dream, as well as stakes-placed Daybreak Dreamer. The 16-year-old son of Holy Bull resides at Madison County Thoroughbreds in Macksburg, Iowa, where he will stand in 2016 for $2,000. With eight crops of racing age, Woke Up Dreamin is representedc by Ecuadorian champion Carla; Puerto Rican Group 1 winner Dreamintowin; and stakes winners Nanaja, Woke Up Lovin, and Maddox Who.
