3 DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Saturday, January 21, 2017 PAGE 3 TAPIT CONTINUES TO RAISE THE BAR AMONG SIRES By Nicole Russo Tapit continues to set the bar higher for himself as he reigns atop the North American sire charts. Tapit broke his own single-season progeny earnings record in 2016, establishing a new mark for the third consecutive year by leading Kentucky s stallions with a bankroll of $19,896,996 more than $7 million ahead of his closest pursuer, Curlin, with $12,772,052. Along the way, he surpassed a milestone in career earnings and notched a rare accomplishment in top-level company. Tapit, who has stood his entire career at Gainesway Farm in Lexington, shattered his own single-season earnings record with still more than a month remaining in He first set the record in 2014 his first year atop the general sires list with $16,813,536, then broke the mark again with $18,397,691 in Tapit, a Grade 1 stakes winner, also surpassed the $100 million mark in career progeny earnings during his latest record season, doing so in June. Comparing Tapit to his peers, other perennial leading sires who compete for similar purse levels, he reached that milestone quite swiftly. Giant s Causeway has finished among the top 10 general sires every year since 2005, leading the list in 2009, 2010, and He passed the $100 million mark in 2012, hitting the milestone, like Tapit, with nine crops of racing age; however, that span also included several years when he stood in dual hemispheres, giving him more foals. The late Smart Strike was the leading sire in 2007 and 2008, establishing a single-year earnings record since broken by Tapit. He passed the $100 million mark in 2013 with his 14th crop of racing age. Tapit s career earnings stood at $108,048,057 as of Jan. 5, and he also is closing in on 100 individual stakes winners, with 89 through His best runners have been Eclipse Award champions Untapable, Hansen, and Stardom Bound as well as Belmont Stakes winners Tonalist and Creator. Tapit s top-level performers propelling him to his third record season in 2016 included a pair of dual Grade 1 winners in Creator, who won the Arkansas Derby before giving his sire a second victory in the oldest and longest American classic, and Eclipse Award finalist Frosted, who won the Metropolitan Handicap and Whitney Stakes. Frosted turned in a scintillating performance in the Met Mile, romping by 14 1/4 lengths and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 123, the top number of the year. Barbara D. Livingston Tapit broke the single-season progeny earnings record for the second time in Tapit sired three other Grade 1 winners on the season with turf filly Time and Motion, and Pretty City Dancer and Sweet Loretta, the dead-heat winners of the Spinaway at Saratoga. The Spinaway was believed to be the first dead-heat sweep for a sire in a Grade 1 or Group 1 event since Prince of Dance and Scenic, both by Sadler s Wells, won the 1988 Dewhurst Stakes. Tapit also was represented by Grade/ Group 2 winners Anchor Down and Lani, both also Grade 1-placed, and Grade/ Group 1-placed performers A Lot, Divining Rod, and Farrier. Lani finished third behind Creator in the Belmont. Tapit, a 16-year-old son of Pulpit, will again stand for a fee of $300,000 in 2017, continuing to reign as North America s most expensive stallion. Second to Tapit on the general sires list in 2016 was Hill n Dale Farm s Curlin, who edged out Uncle Mo with a bankroll of $12,772,052 to $12,461,749. Both of those Continued on page 6

Curlin again put together a career year in 2016, with Exaggerator winning three Grade 1 events, including the Preakness, and 2015 Eclipse Award divisional champion Stellar Wind twice defeating the great Beholder in Grade 1 events in California. Curlin has been represented by a classic winner or classic-placed runner in each of his first four crops, with 2013 Belmont winner Palace Malice, 2014 Preakness runner-up Ride On Curlin, 2015 Belmont third-place finisher Keen Ice, and now Preakness winner Exaggerator. Exaggerator also was second in the Kentucky Derby to Uncle Mo s champion son Nyquist. Curlin also was represented by Grade 1 winners Connect, Curalina, and Off the Tracks in Uncle Mo, standing at Coolmore s Ashford Stud in Kentucky, was the leading freshman sire of 2015 with record earnings for that category, breaking the mark Tapit established when he burst onto the scene in Uncle Mo acquitted himself well as the third-leading general sire of 2016, largely on the continued exploits of that first crop. Nyquist, the Eclipse Award champion juvenile male of 2015, won the Kentucky Derby as well as the Florida Derby to again earn a nod as an Eclipse Award finalist. Uncle Mo also is the sire of Grade 1 winner Outwork; Grade 2 winners Mo Town, Mokat, and Laoban; and Grade 3 winners Auntie Joy, Front Pocket Money, Lost Raven, Mo Tom, and Unbridled Mo. War Front tops in stakes winners Around the country and around the world, the quality of War Front shone through in The Danzig horse, the linchpin of the roster at historic Claiborne Farm, led all Kentucky stallions by stakes winners in 2016, with 22 to Tapit s 21. War Front s season was led by the California-based turf filly Avenge, winner of the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes and Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes. She finished third behind Eclipse Award finalists Queen s Trust and Lady Eli in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf after setting the pace. War Front s other standouts included On Leave, winner of the Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes in New York. American Patriot won the Grade 3 Kent Stakes in course-record time at Delaware Park, then finished third in the Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes in Chicago. Second in the Secretariat was Long Island Sound, who later became a Group 3 winner in Ireland. Stalwart millionaires Departing and War Dancer, both racing as 6-year-olds in Barbara D. Livingston Claiborne Farm s War Front led all Kentucky stallions with 22 stakes wins in , each added stakes wins to their résumés. Departing won the Michael G. Schaefer Memorial in Indiana and placed in stakes in three others states, concluding his career with 16 stakes wins or placings and nearly $2 million in earnings. War Dancer, Grade 1-placed in 2015, captured the PTHA President s Cup at Parx Racing. War Front also led Kentucky s juvenile sires with eight stakes winners to six for Into Mischief, led by a pair of standout fillies overseas. Brave Anna won the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes, one of Europe s leading events for juveniles, after taking the Group 3 Albany Stakes at the renowned Royal Ascot meeting. Second in the Cheveley Park was Roly Poly, winner of the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes in England and the Group 3 Balanchine Stakes in Ireland. Domestically, War Front s standout juveniles included Lull, winner of the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Fillies and second in the Grade 3 Jessamine Stakes, and the versatile With Honors, winner of the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf and second in the Grade 1 Chandelier Stakes on dirt. Top juvenile sire: Into Mischief Into Mischief has demonstrated that he s no joke, as the Spendthrift Farm resident continues to establish himself as one of the top young sires in the country. Into Mischief, by Harlan s Holiday, ranks atop the juvenile sire list by earnings with a bankroll of $3,122,695 from 2-year-olds. His young guns were led by dual Grade 1 winner Practical Joke, who won his first three career starts in New York. The colt romped in his debut by five lengths before gritty scores in the Hopeful Stakes, by a neck over Royal Copy, and Continued on page 12

He then shipped across the country to finish third in the Breeders Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita. Into Mischief also was represented by 2016 juvenile stakes winners Cool Arrow, Let It Ride Mom, Golden Mischief, Party Boat, Miss Sunset, and Dangerfield. Second on the juvenile sire list by earnings was War Front, who led the category by individual stakes winners. Finishing third by earnings was Pioneerof the Nile, likely to have his second juvenile Eclipse Award winner in three years with Breeders Cup Juvenile winner Classic Empire. His first, of course, was 2014 divisional titlist American Pharoah, who went on to sweep the 2015 Triple Crown. Leading freshman sire: Dialed In The 2016 freshman sire race came down to the wire, with Dialed In edging Union Rags with bankrolls of $1,543,136 to $1,466,833. Dialed In also narrowly led by individual winners, 19 to 18; both young sires were represented by three stakes winners. Dialed In, a son of Mineshaft, scored his own biggest win in the 2011 Florida Derby. Now standing at Darby Dan Farm, his first crop is led by Gunnevera, who took the Grade 2 Saratoga Special and followed up with a win in the Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot. The latter has a purse of $1 million. Dialed In also is represented by Ms Locust Point, winner of the Gin Talking Stakes in Maryland, and Ruffenuff, a multiple stakes winner in Canada. Union Rags, standing at Lane s End Farm, was represented by a pair of Grade 1 winners from his first crop in Del Mar Debutante winner Union Strike and Alcibiades Stakes winner Dancing Rags. He also is the sire of stakes winner Tequilita and Grade 2-placed No Dozing. Union Rags was a Grade 1 winner at both 2 and 3, taking the 2011 Champagne Stakes and 2012 Belmont Stakes. Leading turf sire: Kitten s Joy Few of Kentucky s leading stallions have their respective honors in their grasp as tightly as Kitten s Joy, as he leads the North American turf sire list for the fourth consecutive year. A homebred champion for Ken and Sarah Ramsey, the son of El Prado stands at their Ramsey Farm in Nicholasville. He again led stallions by turf earnings ($7,098,572), winners (69), and stakes winners (12). Kitten s Joy earned a divisional Eclipse Award for the Ramseys by winning six graded stakes in 2004, including Grade 1 scores in the Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Barbara D. Livingston Dialed In (above) edged Union Rags as the top freshman sire by wins and earnings. Invitational and Secretariat Stakes. He finished second in that year s Breeders Cup Turf at Lone Star Park. When the horse entered stud in 2006, the Ramseys strongly supported him, and they have bred and raced the vast majority of his offspring. They have been rewarded, with the likes of champion Big Blue Kitten and two-time Breeders Cup winner Stephanie s Kitten and their investments again paid dividends in Kitten s Joy s top earner during his fourth straight outstanding season was Camelot Kitten, who won four graded stakes at three different tracks. The colt won the Grade 2 American Turf at Churchill Downs, the Grade 2 National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Stakes at Saratoga, and the Pennine Ridge and Hill Prince stakes, both Grade 3 events at Belmont. Demonstrating the history of the Ramsey breeding program, Camelot Kitten is a full brother to 2014 Breeders Cup Turf Sprint winner Bobby s Kitten. Top broodmare sire: Storm Cat The great sire Storm Cat died in 2013, but his legacy shows no signs of fading, as he once again reigned as the nation s leading broodmare sire. Bred and raced by the late W.T. Young, Storm Cat stood his entire career at Overbrook Farm. He has ranked among Kentucky s leading broodmare sires each year since 2010 and led the list in 2012, 2013, 2014, and Standout runners out of Storm Cat s daughters in 2016 included Grade 1-winning fillies Dancing Rags, who took the Alcibiades, and Weep No More, winner of the Ashland; Japanese-based Real Steel, winner of the Group 1 Dubai Turf, and A Shin Hikari, who added a Group 1 win in France; and graded stakes winners Blofeld, Glenville Gardens, Strike Charmer, and Term of Art. Boding well for Storm Cat s continued success in the broodmare sire ranks, he also was represented by several standout 2-year-olds out of his daughters, led by European Cartier Award champion Churchill. He also is the broodmare sire of stakes winners Tip Tap Tapizar and Nonna Mela and Grade 1-placed youngsters Irap and Wild Shot. Follow Nicole Russo on

14 PAGE 14 Saturday, January 21, 2017 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING BEYER STANDINGS PROVIDE NEW STALLION METRICS By Joe Nevills A visitor to Hill n Dale Farms in recent years would have found the number 114 inescapable. The three digits adorn baseball caps, posters, print advertisements, and Hill n Dale-branded jackets, begging onlookers to inquire about the meaning. Those who ask learn that the number is what makes the young stallion Maclean s Music special. The son of Distorted Humor raced just once before injury ended his career, but the start was a dazzler, a 7 1/4-length maiden romp at Santa Anita. What made it historic was his 114 Beyer Speed Figure, the highest ever in a debut effort. A typical Kentucky Derby fails to produce a winner with a figure that exceptional. It was a watershed for the marketing of a stallion prospect. Beyer Speed Figures graduated from supporting fact to central selling point. You have to hang your hat on one race in a one-race career, and he ran faster than any maiden has ever run, said John G. Sikura, president of Hill n Dale Farms. That number was a way to help define how good he was. Maclean s Music displayed plenty of traits befitting of a stallion prospect at a major Kentucky farm pedigree, looks, strong connections, and a showcase race but the weight that record-setting 114 Beyer carried was one of the most compelling reasons he entered stud in the Bluegrass State instead of debuting as a regional sire. I would say he wouldn t be at Hill n Dale if he had run a 101 Beyer and won by four lengths, Sikura said. Since making their published debut in The Racing Times in 1991, Beyer Speed Figures have become a widely recognized shorthand to describe the level of a horse s effort beyond a final time and finishing position. Beyer Speed Figures were incorporated into Daily Racing Form s past performances in 1992 and are now an industry standard for the comparison Barbara D. Livingston Maclean s Music received a 114 Beyer Speed Figure for his lone start. He now stands at Hill n Dale Farms in Kentucky. of one horse s performance to another. With the introduction of DRF s Beyer Sire Performance Standings, the breeding industry will have a new tool to compare stallion progeny performance beyond wins and earnings. The standings provide totals and percentages for progeny who surpass specific Beyer Speed Figure benchmarks in North American races (90 and higher for horses 3 and older and 80 and higher for 2-year-olds). While traditional sire lists based on earnings can be slanted by one or two major stakes victories or casino-inflated purses on some circuits, the Beyer Sire Performance Standings are not impacted by those factors. Beyers are assigned to all runners in a race, allowing DRF s sire lists to include all performances. The standings provide a measurement of a sire s ability to produce fast horses, not necessarily the most winners or highest earners. To illustrate this point, Songbird and Beholder fought an epic battle to the wire in last year s Breeders Cup Distaff, with Beholder prevailing by the slimmest of margins. Beholder s win added $1.1 million to sire Henny Hughes s progeny earnings, while Medaglia d Oro s rose $340,000 for Songbird s runnerup finish. Beholder got credit for more black type and another graded stakes win, but few could argue that her performance was massively better than Songbird s. In fact, both received a 105 Beyer for their efforts in the race. The traditional ways in evaluating horse performance have pretty much all been ridiculous, or filled with flaws, said Andrew Beyer, creator of the Beyer Speed Figures. We know all the things that are wrong with earnings and saying that a horse won so many Grade 2s or Grade 3s with no reference to the quality of those performances. Almost every sport has mathematically based evaluations of its athletes that are pretty widely accepted like the quarterback rating in football or wins above replacement in baseball. American Thoroughbred racing never had anything like this, but I think that the Beyer Speed Figures have filled a void, with an objective, mathematically based rating of every horse s performance. Beyer Speed Figures have an established history in the breeding industry, and many breeding operations are quick to note when a runner sired by one of their residents pulls a big number, preferably in a big spot. We use it for Twitter a lot, and obviously for ads, especially if there is a trend or a story to be told based on a personal touch for a stallion, said Darren Fox, sales manager at Darley. For example, it s nice that your stallion had four maiden special weight winners in a week, but you can quantify that with Beyer Speed Figures and tell an even deeper, more meaningful story, one that would grab more attention, which is what we re trying to do. The numbers reverence carries over into the auction market. Every horse who pulls a big number can create a ripple effect on a pedigree page that can potentially increase the commercial value of every horse on it. For some stallions, the Beyer Sire Performance Standings will give numerical evidence to affirm their spot as a top commodity. Sires with small crops can potentially stand out with a large percentage of runners achieving high Beyers. It helps you separate horses, one race from another, Fox said about the speed figures. A race is visual, and assessing it visually is obviously a big part of assessing a performance. If it s one that caught your eye and you see an associated number that affirms what you saw visually, then that cements that performance in your mind. Criteria separations by gender, surface, and distance will allow readers to pinpoint where runners by a particular stallion excel or falter when stacked against their contemporaries. While the Beyer Sire Performance Standings are primarily Continued on page 17

17 DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Saturday, January 21, 2017 PAGE 17 Continued from page 14 a tool in the bloodstock realm, an enterprising handicapper who integrates pedigree into his method would be wise to browse the standings to find stallions capable of producing runners who hit key Beyer thresholds under different circumstances. The standings could help identify sires flying under the radar. In some cases, the Beyer Sire Performance Standings are useful to confirm the prowess of an elite sire. Perennial powerhouse Tapit, who set the North American record for progeny earnings for a third straight year in 2016, led all stallions by number of horses to achieve a 90-plus Beyer last year (36) and tied with Medaglia d Oro for the most runners with a 100-plus figure (eight). Tapit also was represented by the highest Beyer Speed Figure of 2016 when his son Frosted racked up a 123 in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap. Speed figures define the top horses in the country very well, Beyer said. You don t see fluky kinds of horses popping up and running a 120. In 2015, the top speed figures belonged to American Pharoah, Beholder, Liam s Map, and Flintshire, elite horses all. The same is true this year. You ve got Frosted, Arrogate, and California Chrome with the three best that s a pretty good list. The standings also can help potential buyers of racing prospects find value on the racetrack in contrast to stud fee. For example, Flatter, who stands for a midrange fee of $35,000, had seven runners achieve a 100-plus Beyer last year, tying for the second-most with Curlin ($150,000 stud fee) and Giant s Causeway ($75,000). You re always looking for who were the fastest horses, bloodstock agent Mike McMahon said. You have to use [a speed figure] that everybody knows. If you say to somebody a horse gets a 100 Beyer, everybody knows what a 100 Beyer is. Beyond highlighting the exploits of top stallions, the Beyer sire standings can identify fast-rising young stallions who might go overlooked on the national scene. California s Square Eddie, who had four crops of racing age in 2016, was the third-ranked North American sire by percentage of turf runners with at least one 90-plus Beyer, among sires with four or more do so, at 15.6 percent. He finished behind only War Front and Medaglia d Oro in that category. Square Eddie also led all North American-based sires by percentage of turf runners to earn at least one 100-plus Beyer at 6.2 percent. A horse s collection of Beyers is just one part of the mosaic that creates an ontrack résumé, either for wagering or assessment and purchase of breeding prospects. While the long-standing indicators of time, class, and margin of victory remain triedand-true measuring sticks by the industry s most successful participants, Beyers provide a more standardized assessment of the effort, less affected by intangibles like surface condition and bias. Twenty years ago, when a horse ran five furlongs under a minute, that would get your attention, Sikura said. If a horse ran it in 58 and 1, that looked really fast. If a horse ran three quarters in 1:09 and change, it was considered very fast. You had a range of times that you d use, and good horses showed themselves that way. If a horse won by 10 in a hand ride or won four in a row, that s a good horse. It s up to the buyers to decide what factors are important, Sikura added. I m not sure anyone buys or sells a horse based on a number if they re retired, but if they re a racing prospect, it s important. If I want to buy a filly who won three stakes, but she never ran fast, and compare her to one that was stakes-placed twice and ran huge numbers but had an abbreviated career because she got hurt, then maybe she s the better buy because she s the faster horse.

21 DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Saturday, January 21, 2017 PAGE 21 MEDAGLIA D ORO TOPS IN 100-PLUS BEYER RATE In a year with several outstanding fillies and mares on the track, some of the most brilliant propelled their respective sires atop the rankings of Kentucky stallions by percentage of individual runners earning triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures. Among stallions who will stand in Kentucky in 2017, Darley s Medaglia d Oro was represented by 4.8 percent of his runners with Beyers of 100 or higher, edging Hill n Dale resident Curlin at 4.2 percent. Next came Lookin At Lucky at 3.9 percent, Speightstown at 3.4 percent, Flatter at 3.1 percent, Birdstone at 3 percent, and Tapit at 2.9 percent. The co-highest Beyer Speed Figure for a filly or mare in 2016 belonged to Curlin s champion daughter Stellar Wind, who posted a 110 when winning the Grade 1 Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita one of her two Grade 1 victories over multiple Eclipse winner Beholder. Beholder also was given a 110 for the Zenyatta. Behind those two, the co-third-highest Beyer of the year for a female was the 109 assigned to New York-bred Bar of Gold for her runaway victory in the Empire Distaff at Belmont Park. That was the highest number of the year for Medaglia d Oro, who also was represented by his champion daughter Songbird, a winer of four Grade 1 events in She suffered her first loss when second by a nose to Beholder in the Breeders Cup Distaff, but earned her top Beyer of the year with a 105. Nicole Russo BEYER SIRE PERFORMANCE STANDINGS War Front shines among U.S. turf sires It s no revelation to say European-sired horses tend to have a natural advantage in North American turf races over their domestic contemporaries. The major racing jurisdictions on the other side of the pond breed almost exclusively for the grass, and the above-average European runners regularly travel to North America to become forces in graded stakes races. DRF s Beyer Sire Performance Standings back that up, with European sires like Galileo, Dubawi, and Holy Roman Emperor putting up astounding percentages of North American runners to achieve at least one Beyer Speed Figure of 90 or above last year, admittedly from relatively small samplings. The domestic stallion that has arguably done the best job reversing that stream is War Front, who not only had the secondhighest number of runners to achieve Barbara D. Livingston More than 4 percent of Medaglia d Oro s starters posted a triple-digit Beyer in a 90-plus Beyer in 2016 with 24, but also posted the highest percentage of runners to hit that mark among North American sires with four or more runners, at 24.2 percent. The highest turf Beyer for War Front in 2016 came from Avenge, who chalked up a 103 finishing third in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Avenge also earned her sire s highest Beyer in a victorious effort when she notched a 99 in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive Stakes and added a 95 Beyer winning an optional claimer at Del Mar. She also picked up a 94 in her Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes win at Del Mar. Elsewhere among War Front offpsring, Fire Away pulled a 98 Beyer winning an Aqueduct optional claimer, War Dancer earned a 97 figure in his PTHA President s Cup Stakes win at Parx Racing, Get expanded Beyer Sire Performance Standings charts online at DRF.com/beyerstandings and Take Cover took home a 96 after winning the Pennsylvania Governor s Cup Stakes at Penn National. Also of note, Lancaster Bomber earned a 91 Beyer with his runner-up effort in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf. War Front s foals also have shown ability to take their talent across the Atlantic and place their sire shoulder to shoulder with the global powers. He was represented in 2016 by English Group 1 winner Brave Anna, Group 2 winners Roly Poly Continued on page 22

22 PAGE 22 Saturday, January 21, 2017 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING Continued from page 21 and War Decree, and Group 3 winner Royal Artillery; French Group 3 winner War Flag; and Irish Group 3 winners Long Island Sound and Intelligence Cross. War Front stands for $250,000 at Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky. Joe Nevills Birdstone s sneaky-good year Tapit s latest record-setting year atop the North American sire ranks was led by Frosted, who dazzled the racing world with a romp in the Metropolitan Handicap that earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 123 the highest number of the year. But Tapit, who commands the highest fee on the continent at $300,000, has a stablemate in the Gainesway stallion complex who quietly put together a solid year based on Beyers in Birdstone is standing for an advertised fee of $5,000 in 2017 and is a value sire at that price with a high percentage of highlevel runners. The stallion was represented by 97 starters in 2016 fewer than many perennial leading sires who cover triple-digit books annually. However, quality shone through that limited quantity. According to Daily Racing Form s Beyer Sire Performance Standings, 7.2 percent of Birdstone s individual runners posted figures of 90 or above, a benchmark of quality, during the 2016 season. That is a higher percentage than prominent Kentucky sires Awesome Again, City Zip, Ghostzapper, Into Mischief, Malibu Moon, Pioneerof the Nile, and Tiznow all of whom command much higher fees. By seasonal percentage of runners earning Beyers of 100 or higher, Birdstone comes in at 3 percent edging Tapit at 2.9 percent. He still is relatively overlooked, said Michael Hernon, Gainesway s director of sales. But he s a great buy for $5,000. He was a top racehorse, and he s got a great pedigree. Anybody looking to improve their mare for a very affordable price, you could do a while lot worse than look at Birdstone. Birdstone was one of four stallions who will stand in Kentucky in 2017 with a runner earning an elite figure of 110 or above in 2016, joining Curlin, Pioneerof the Nile, and Tapit. The 110 that Noble Bird posted with his romp in the Grade 3 Pimlico Special one of two brilliant graded wins for that millionaire last year was the co-second-highest figure of the year for an active Kentucky stallion, behind only Frosted s Met Mile. Birdstone, a three-time Grade 1 winner most famous for denying Smarty Jones the Triple Crown in the 2004 Belmont Stakes, burst onto the scene with a pair of classic winners from his first crop in Sovereign Award champion and 2009 Courtesy of Gainesway Gainesway stallion Birdstone had 7.2 percent of his runners post a 90 Beyer or above. Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and Belmont winner and Eclipse Award champion Summer Bird. Noble Bird tied Summer Bird for the co-second-highest Beyer of Birdstone s stud career. Summer Bird ran a 111 Beyer in winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup and a 110 winning the Travers Stakes. Mexikoma earned the sixth-highest Beyer of Birdstone s stud career with a 107 in winning the Sunshine Millions Classic. Birdstone s other triple-digit runners fueling his percentages in 2016 included the stalwart Blue Tone, who posted a 103 winning an optional claimer at Santa Anita. The gelding recently opened his 8-year-old campaign by winning the Grade 3 San Gabriel at Santa Anita. He s a tremendous value, Hernon said of Birdstone. He just had a new graded stakes winner, he s had a Derby winner, he was a top-class horse himself. Everyone remembers he won the Belmont in a very memorable race, however he broke his maiden by 12 in his first start at Saratoga and he also won the Champagne, a Grade 1, at 2. People think, He won the Belmont, so he s a plodder. It s crazy. He s a very good stallion. Nicole Russo Big results from low-cost Northern Afleet There is little doubt that Northern Afleet has amassed a fine résumé at stud. The 23-year-old son of Afleet has sired a dual-classic winner in Afleet Alex, a champion sprinter in Amazombie, and a Brazilian Horse of the Year in Barolo. However, Northern Afleet s commercial appeal is limited, leading his stud fee to be set at $6,500 by Taylor Made Stallions. For those looking to breed a runner, or bet on one by the stallion, the price could be right. Northern Afleet was the only stallion advertised for a fee of less than $10,000 to be represented in 2016 by 10 or more runners with at least one 90-plus Beyer Speed Figure. Of his 184 runners last year, 13 horses met or surpassed that threshold a combined 34 times. In total, 7 percent of his runners hit the 90 Beyer threshold at least once in Northern Afleet s number of 90-plus runners tied him with pricier stallions More Than Ready ($60,000) and Harlan s Holiday (deceased, last stood for $35,000). Leading the way for Northern Afleet s runners was World Approval, who earned a 106 Beyer in winning the Grade 1 United Nations Stakes at Monmouth Park by 1 1/4 lengths. He also notched a 105 in a thirdplace effort in the Grade 1 Manhattan Stakes and a 103 as the runner-up in the Grade 1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic Stakes. World Approval was one of three horses by Northern Afleet to turn in a Beyer of 100 or more last year, with that group achieving the mark a combined seven times. Continued on page 27

Iselin Stakes at Monmouth Park with a 102, and Kaigun rounded out the trio with a winning 101 in the Grade 2 Pan American Stakes at Gulfstream. Both horses also earned an additional triple-digit Beyer in losing efforts. Northern Afleet nearly had a fourth horse join the 100-plus club last year when War Story won the Queens County Stakes at Aqueduct with a 99 Beyer. Joe Nevills Bodemeister stands out among freshmen Dual classic-placed Grade 1 winner Bodemeister displayed brilliance during his own racing career, earning triple-digit Beyer Speed Figures in four of his six career starts, led by a 109 when second in the Preakness. He just missed the tripledigit cutoff with a 99 for his runner-up effort in the Kentucky Derby. Bodemeister, now standing at WinStar Farm, seems to have passed that talent on to his offspring. He led all freshman sires by his number of runners with Beyers 80 and above a benchmark figure for 2-year-olds. He had five runners achieve that mark. The highest Beyer of the year for a runner by a freshman sire was the 98 that Straight Fire earned winning his maiden. By Spendthrift Farm sire Dominus, Straight Fire went on to be multiple Grade 1-placed. Next on the list was Bodemeister s son Always Dreaming, who posted an 88 for finishing second in a maiden special weight at Saratoga, beaten a neck by the high-priced Blame Will. Always Dreaming is still a maiden, but is working at Palm Beach Downs toward his 2017 debut. Also among Bodemeister s top numbers was Speedmeister, who was assigned an 86 for winning a Keeneland maiden race by 4 1/2 lengths over eventual gradedplaced stakes winner Warrior s Club. American Anthem also earned an 86 with his sharp Del Mar maiden win in December. He returned to finish second in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes, establishing himself among California s Kentucky Derby prospects. Stakes winner O Dionysus earned an 85 when second by a nose in the Marylander Stakes on New Year s Eve at Laurel Park. Nicole Russo Tapit s sons retiring for 2017 Two of reigning leading sire Tapit s best runners from a Beyer Speed Figure standpoint will be among Kentucky s new stallions of Frosted, who retires to Darley s Jonabell Farm in Kentucky, earned the year s top figure with a 123 for his 14 1/4-length romp in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park. That also was the top career Beyer for Tapit, far surpassing the 112 awarded to Trappe Shot for a runnerup effort in the Grade 1 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes in 2011 at Saratoga. Second to Frosted in the Met Mile was Anchor Down, who joins Tapit in the Gainesway stallion complex for Anchor Down won a pair of New York s Barbara D. Livingston Bodemeister led al freshman sires with five Beyers greater than 80 in other mile events last year in the Grade 2 Kelso and Grade 3 Westchester Stakes. In the Kelso, he posted a Beyer of 108, tied for the 10th-highest figure of Tapit s career. Anchor Down s unique combination of pedigree, physical, and raw miler speed gives him the potential to make a very successful sire, Gainesway president Antony Beck said. Nicole Russo

29 DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Saturday, January 21, 2017 PAGE 29 TAYLOR MADE PUTS CHROME ON THE FAST TRACK By Nicole Russo The big gray colt had just served notice that he was sitting on a big season. Against just two rivals who cared to challenge him in the Olympic Handicap, he coasted by four lengths. He was expected to be a favorite in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap. But then bad luck struck again for the multiple Grade 1 winner, who had been injury-plagued the prior season. The colt came back from a routine gallop Feb. 1, 1997, with a fracture in his right foreleg, forcing him into retirement. He was to be the first stallion at Taylor Made Farm in Nicholasville, Ky. and with about two weeks until breeding season began in Kentucky, the nascent stud operation was under the gun. He was our first horse, said Mark Taylor, vice president of marketing and public sales operations, who runs Taylor Made with his brothers Duncan, Ben, and Frank. He ran down there at Gulfstream, set a track record. We thought he was going to run all year and all of a sudden, bam! Here he comes, and we didn t even have a breeding shed up until this point. But things turned out all right for Unbridled s Song. The stallion covered 84 mares in that 1997 season at stud, according to The Jockey Club s Report of Mares Bred. From that first crop emerged Breeders Cup Distaff winner Unbridled Elaine. Unbridled s Song went on to become a prominent commercial and racetrack sire, putting Taylor Made on the map, with his exploits in both arenas continuing even after his death in 2013 most recently with Breeders Cup Classic winner Arrogate, who will likely become the late sire s third Eclipse Award champion. Now, the Taylor brothers operation faces another challenge in a similar time frame. California Chrome, the 2014 Horse of the Year and favored to take the title again for his 2016 season, is set to make his final career start in the world s richest race, the $12 million Pegasus World Cup on Jan. 28 at Gulfstream. A victory would enhance his already-staggering bankroll. The dual classic-winning California-bred is North America s all-time leading money winner, with earnings of $14,502,650. But win or lose, California Chrome will head to Taylor Made following the Pegasus with just more than two weeks until Kentucky breeding sheds begin accepting mares on or about Feb. 14. Taylor Made bought into the horse in the summer of 2015 and campaigns him as California Chrome LLC with co-breeder Perry Martin and other partners. He has Barbara D. Livingston California Chrome will begin his stallion career following the Pegasus World Cup. already richly rewarded that investment on the racetrack and now embarks on his next career as part of a rebuilding roster for Taylor Made, still seeking its next cornerstone sire after the loss of Unbridled s Song. It s going to challenge all of our respective horsemanship, Mark Taylor said. That s what it s going to be, is horsemanship. The Taylor Made Stallions team is headed by vice president of stallions Ben Taylor and stallion manager Gilberto Terrazas. The staff also includes stallion nominations manager Travis White, stallion administrative assistant Wendy Upton, and sales assistant Brooks Taylor, Ben s son. That team will have its hands full this season with four new stallions more than doubling the size of the farm s 2016 roster. The other newcomers are Mshawish (by Medaglia d Oro), a Grade 1 winner on both dirt and turf; multiple graded stakes winner Protonico (Giant s Causeway); and Not This Time (Giant s Causeway), an Eclipse Award finalist for champion juvenile whose promising career was cut short by injury. While those young stallions have had several months to acclimate to life at Taylor Made, California Chrome will have a sharper learning curve. He s going to have like two weeks to go from the playing field to the penthouse, Mark Taylor said with a laugh. I think he s going to do great. We ve got such a great team that handles our stallions, and they re just thrilled for the challenge. He s obviously a very, very smart horse. He s so adaptable. You look at how this horse adapts to whatever you put him in. How he ships, any new thing he s ever been exposed to in his life he has just taken to it and done great. Continued on page 30

30 PAGE 30 Saturday, January 21, 2017 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING Continued from page 29 New stallions must settle into farm life, which is more sedate than the racetrack. Some also are being turned out in paddocks for the first time in a long while, while others who have been training in warmer climates face Kentucky s winter weather. Newcomers also are testbred, both to check their fertility and to teach them the mechanics of the breeding shed. Overly enthusiastic stallions, or, at the other end of the spectrum, shy or reluctant breeders, require special attention. I know he s got a very strong libido, because he s hollering at every filly on the backside and he s on his hind legs all the time, Mark Taylor said. But there s still a learning process. You ve got to acclimate him to the weather, too. He s coming in here, and it s going to be kind of shellshock. While the next few weeks will be a carefully scheduled flurry of preparations, the wheels have actually been turning on California Chrome s second career for several months now. Last year, California Chrome LLC was joined by several new shareholders, most notably China Horse Club, who have lined up mares for his first book. On the open market, California Chrome s stud fee has been set at $40,000, making him the co-second-highest-priced newcomer of We think that s a very reasonable stud fee, and we re hoping to get some really good mares and that breeders will make money and we can make him a great stallion, Taylor Made president and CEO Duncan Taylor said. California Chrome s pedigree played a big factor in setting that fee. He is by far the most accomplished runner on his page. That hasn t daunted the Taylors who invested in another accomplished California-bred with a pedigree some were skeptical of in Tiznow, now a perennial sire of top horses at WinStar Farm. Even though I think he has a very good pedigree, it s not an obvious pedigree, Duncan Taylor said of California Chrome. I think it s going to take some explaining, and I think, hopefully, with The pedigree is there... if you look behind just California Chrome, there s a reason why that happened. Mark Taylor the price where it is, people will want to learn more. California Chrome is by Lucky Pulpit, who comes from the same sire line as reigning leading sire Tapit and is from the female family of Unbridled s Song. The Taylors also became familiar with California Chrome s dam, the Not For Love mare Love the Chase, when boarding her for Martin. Mark Taylor points out that Love the Chase is line-bred to Dance Number, the Phipps family broodmare whose offspring include 2-year-old champion Rhythm and Not For Love. We ve studied her pedigree, and everyone has their own stigma they place on California Chrome because he s by a stallion that was not a household name in Kentucky before he came along, Mark Taylor said. If you look at the way Love the Chase is bred, there s no mystery why she s a great broodmare. The pedigree is there, which is great to talk to people about, and it s a fun platform to do it. The production is there, but if you look behind just California Chrome, there s a reason why that happened. The genetics are there. Martin elected to sell Love the Chase to raise additional capital for the purchase of broodmares to support California Chrome. The mare fetched $1.95 million at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale. At the Keeneland November breeding stock sale, which began the following day, California Chrome LLC purchased nine mares five as agent for Martin for a combined $2.79 million. That group was led by $560,000 Theworldweknow, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and multiple stakes producer Marylebone. Other purchases included Roughing, a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Diplomat Lady and Grade 2 winner Dream Play, for $500,000; and Uchitel, dam of Grade 3 winner Suddenbreakingnews and also a half-sister to Grade 1 winner and stakes producer Composure, for $420,000. Other mares booked to California Chrome include Champagne Royale, dam of Grade 1 winners Danza and Majestic Harbor; Beholden, dam of Grade 3 winner Brazen Persuasion; Grade 2 winners Mamma Kimbo and Warbling; and Grade 2-placed stakes winner You Bought Her. Duncan Taylor believes the young stallion will be a good physical match for a variety of mares. He s a medium-sized horse with great balance and a great neck, he said. I don t really think he s going to be difficult to match up. He s got a great hip, and with his body shape and type, he s right in the middle. So I think he s just naturally going to match with a lot of mares. When farms are within days of breeding sheds opening, dance cards for the stallions will begin to fill as owners schedule covering appointments for their mares when they are about to come into season. Busier stallions may breed up to three times a day, but farms take special care in the scheduling of new stallions who are still learning the ropes and also are developing new muscles for the physical process of covering mares and building stamina. We re just going to have to take care of him, Mark Taylor said. We ve talked to all the people who have been booking mares and are lined up to breed to him, and we ve told them we re going to try to get him launched as close to the start of the breeding season as possible. But we re going to do the right thing by the horse and ease him into it. We ve tried not to load up his book with so many maiden [mares], where he was going to have 45 mares staring at the front gate on Valentine s Day. We ve tried to be a little bit conscious of that. It s not going to be easy, but it s a good problem to have. 31 DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Saturday, January 21, 2017 PAGE 31 FROSTED BACK HOME TO START HIS SECOND CAREER By Nicole Russo Thomas Wolfe wrote that you can t go home again but no one bothered to tell Frosted. Born in Kentucky, Frosted went on to carry the blue colors of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum s Godolphin operation around the globe, successfully campaigning in New York, Dubai, and elsewhere. The multiple Grade 1 winner now returns to Kentucky to launch his stud career at Sheikh Mohammed s Darley at Jonabell Farm near Lexington, Ky., as one of the most highly anticipated new stallions of The son of three-time reigning leading sire Tapit starts with an advertised fee of $50,000, the highest for a newcomer in Kentucky. Right behind him is Darley s other new addition, Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, with the co-second-highest fee at $40,000. It s very special to retire a horse of Frosted s caliber but even more so in that he accomplished so much as a homebred, racing in Sheikh Mohammed s Godolphin silks, said Dan Pride, chief operating officer of Darley s American operations. His Metropolitan Handicap was one for the ages, and add to that his great pedigree and tremendous physical appearance and you ve got all the pieces in place for a sire of the future. A Grade 2-placed juvenile and a Grade 1 winner at 3, Frosted blossomed to post his best season in 2016, for which he is an Eclipse Award finalist for outstanding older dirt male. His signature triumph came in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Belmont Park, as he romped by 14 1/4 lengths in the historic, sire-making event. His final time was 1:32.73, missing the track record by twofifths; he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 123, not only the top number of the year, but also the top number of sire Tapit s stud career. Frosted also won the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes at Saratoga and the Group 2 Al Maktoum Barbara D. Livingston Frosted, by Tapit, will make his stallion debut in 2017 for a $50,000 fee at Darley in Kentucky. Challenge in Dubai in Campaigning against some of the best talent of the modern era in American Pharoah and California Chrome, he concluded his career with five stakes wins and six additional placings, including a runner-up effort in the Belmont Stakes, for earnings of more than $3.9 million. Nyquist followed in the footsteps of his sire, Uncle Mo, by earning a divisional Eclipse Award for an unbeaten juvenile campaign, culminating with the Breeders Cup Juvenile. Darley announced that it had acquired the colt s stud rights two days later, then watched him go on to win the Kentucky Derby last spring. Nyquist suffered a setback in preparations for his first season at stud when he underwent colic surgery in late December, in which a slight twist to his intestine was repaired. Pride expects him to be fully recovered and ready when the breeding shed opens in February. Nyquist is one of two Grade 1 winners from Uncle Mo s breakout first crop entering stud this year giving the latter an early opportunity to begin proving himself as a sire of sires, and also, perhaps, providing a value point opposite his $150,000 stud fee. The other retiree is Wood Memorial winner Outwork, standing at WinStar Farm. He is one of four newcomers on that operation s steadily expanding roster, along with Preakness winner Exaggerator (by Curlin), with a division-leading three Grade 1 wins in 2016; Breeders Cup Mile winner Tourist (Tiznow); and Grade 3 winner Speightster (Speightstown). Speightster is one of two high-profile sons of Speightstown going to stud this year, along with Breeders Cup Dirt Mile winner Tamarkuz at Shadwell. Joining WinStar and partners in Tourist s stud career is Liliana Solari and Carlos Heller s Don Alberto Corp., a major Chilean operation that established a Kentucky presence with the purchase of the former Vinery in Kentucky in The partnership on a prominent young stallion is another major foray into the U.S. stallion market for Don Alberto, which partnered with Gainesway to repatriate Empire Maker in Meanwhile, another multinational outfit, China Horse Club, is involved in three prominent newcomers for 2017, including Exaggerator. The lifestyle group also has a share in California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit), one of four new stallions at Taylor Made for The 2014 Horse of the Year enters stud alongside Grade 1 winner Mshawish (Medaglia d Oro) and graded winners Not This Time (Giant s Causeway) and Protonico (Giant s Causeway). 32 PAGE 32 Saturday, January 21, 2017 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING Continued from page 31 China Horse Club also is one of four major entities partnering on the career of globetrotting multiple Grade/Group 1 winner Flintshire (Dansili). The horse will stand at Hill n Dale Farm in partnership with breeder Juddmonte Farms, China Horse Club, and S.F. Bloodstock all of which have deep broodmare bands. This is an exciting group that has come together to support and stand behind an incredible international star who brought his best race to every corner of the globe and distinguished himself truly as a horse of the world, Hill n Dale president John G. Sikura said. The fact that Juddmonte is staying in and has committed mares to him says a lot about their belief in the horse to become a great sire. I believe Kentucky needs to become more global again in attracting international stallion prospects. Look at the success of [turf sires] War Front and Kitten s Joy. We should be embracing these kinds of opportunities in order to be relevant to all marketplaces. I have been waiting for the right horse to stand that fits this mold. I believe Flintshire is the one. This year s two new arrivals at Coolmore s Ashford Stud in Kentucky also have a distinct international flavor and both were standout juveniles, displaying precocity that is valued in the American market. Australian champion juvenile Vancouver (Medaglia d Oro) will be standing his first Northern Hemisphere season, while Air Force Blue (War Front), by a popular commercial sire, was an outstanding runner in Europe. Spendthrift Farm also has a standout juvenile by War Front entering stud in Hit It a Bomb, winner of the 2015 Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf. The historic Spendthrift operation, which has grown by leaps and bounds with its breeder incentives like Share the Upside for young stallions, also adds dual Eclipse Award finalist Lord Nelson (Pulpit), multiple Grade 1 winner Brody s Cause (Giant s Causeway), and Grade 3 winner Cinco Charlie (Indian Charlie) to the roster. Lord Nelson is expected to be ready for the start of breeding season in February after undergoing an extensive recovery from the infection in his leg that knocked him out of last fall s Breeders Cup. Two other historic Kentucky farms have multiple new stallions, each including an Eclipse winner. Champion sprinter Runhappy (Super Saver) enters stud at Claiborne Farm, moving into the famous stall in its main stallion barn that once housed Bold Ruler, Secretariat, Easy Goer, and Unbridled. Further illustrating Claiborne s long history, its other newcomer for 2017 is Grade 2 winner Ironicus (Distorted Humor), a homebred for the farm s longtime and most well-known clients, the Janney and Phipps family. The iconic Calumet Farm establishment, which found new life when owner Brad Kelley purchased it, adds five new stallions to its stillnascent roster, led by Eclipse Award outstanding turf horse Big Blue Kitten (Kitten s Joy). Our roster features a wide variety of bloodlines possessing soundness, conformation, and a propensity to winning classic two-turn races on both dirt and turf, said Eddie Kane, Calumet Farm general manager. We are focused not only on building long-term relationships with breeders but also sharing in the commercial and racing success of our stallions. Calumet shopped aggressively to support its stallions at the Keeneland January horses of all ages sale, one of the final opportunities to purchase a broodmare before the start of breeding season in February. Likewise, the partners behind 2014 Breeders Cup Juvenile winner Texas Red (Afleet Alex) were moving to fill his book at that sale. Texas Red is one of two major acquisitions this year for Crestwood Farm, along with 2015 Kentucky Derby runner-up Firing Line (Line of David). Also shopping at Keeneland January were the connections of Not This Time, Protonico, Flintshire, and Grade 2 winner Anchor Down, who will stand alongside his sire, Tapit, at Gainesway.

33 DRF.COM/BREEDING DAILY RACING FORM Saturday, January 21, 2017 PAGE 33 KANTHAROS TOPS SIRES CALLED UP TO BIG LEAGUES By Joe Nevills The string of announcements from Kentucky farms ushering stallions to a better fit in regional or international markets is a common sight in the months between breeding seasons. Less common is the stallion who gets a call-up to the North American breeding industry s major leagues and settles into a stall in the Bluegrass State after entering stud in another market. When the move has gone as planned, it has produced names that have become ubiquitous in the stud book, including the legendary Mr. Prospector and his sons Fappiano and Crafty Prospector, who all debuted in Florida before moving north. In recent years, the roster of relocated stallions into Kentucky includes Saint Ballado, Northern Afleet, Stormy Atlantic, Malibu Moon, Macho Uno, and City Zip. This breeding season once again produces a handful of incoming Kentucky stallions who got their starts out of state, headlined by Grade 2 winner Kantharos. The 9-year-old son of Lion Heart moved to Hill n Dale Farms in Lexington for 2017 after standing his first six seasons in Florida, most of them at Ocala Stud. His first foals are 5-year-olds of A lightning-fast start by his runners made Kantharos Florida s second-leading sire by progeny earnings in 2016 with just three crops on the racetrack. He has 12 stakes winners from his first 106 starters, chief among them Grade 2 winner Ancient Secret and Grade 3 winners X Y Jet and Mr. Jordan. John Moynihan, bloodstock adviser for owner Stonestreet Farm, said the time had come to expand the stallion s portfolio and increase his stud fee from the $5,000 at which he was advertised in The boost to the $15,000 he commands this year at Hill n Dale, though, would have made him Florida s highest-priced stallion. In our case, Florida is an excellent place to stand a young horse and get him off the ground, Moynihan said. When you get to the point where your horse commands a stud-fee range of $15,000 or higher, they don t really have the mare population to support a horse to a large degree like maybe Kentucky would at that level. That was a large part of our decision making. Stonestreet had a long-running relationship with John G. Sikura s Hill n Dale Farms, which already stood Curlin, Maclean s Music, and Atreides for owner Barbara Banke. However, the Stonestreet operation s history of spreading its Barbara D. Livingston Kantharos will stand at Hill n Dale Farms in Kentucky for $15,000 this season after getting off to a fast start in his stallion career while in Florida. assets meant landing Kantharos was no certainty. Sikura said he first expressed interest in standing the horse more than a year before the deal to relocate was announced. With several other Kentucky farms also on the scent, Sikura knew he had to assert himself from the gate to succeed. If you re in this business, you have to try to be aware of everything, if at all possible, he said. Any trends in the marketplace, any new or regional horse getting runners, you need to pay attention to that success, and if it gets to a level to where you think those horses are ready for that move, you ve got to express an interest, you ve got to solicit the people, and you ve got to talk about it. You have to jump on early, too early probably, to make the offer, but early enough to let them know that you re serious. Early response has been positive for Continued on page 34

34 PAGE 34 Saturday, January 21, 2017 DAILY RACING FORM DRF.COM/BREEDING Continued from page 33 Kantharos, who Sikura said had more than 100 mares in his book before the turn of the new year. Sikura had been down a similar path with Hill n Dale stalwart Stormy Atlantic, who stood his first five seasons at Bridlewood Farm in Ocala, Fla., before moving to Kentucky for the 2003 season. Stormy Atlantic was a top-10 freshman sire when the deal was announced, led by Grade 3 winner Atlantic Ocean. What you need to do is make sure the success is real and it s not a blip because if you bring the horse to Kentucky and he falters, they ll look at your horse skeptically, Sikura said. Stormy Atlantic, we really went out on a limb. He had one [graded] stakes winner, and we brought the horse up, and he exceeded everyone s expectations. He was champion juvenile sire, he had Grade 1 winners and in excess of 100 stakes winners, so that s high standards for any horse, particularly a horse who stood in Florida for $5,000. While the destination might be the same, there are many different roads for a regional stallion to take to central Kentucky. For some stallions, relocation to Kentucky is a function of a farm moving its own pieces around the board. Adena Springs in Paris, Ky., brings in two stallions for the 2017 season who started their stud careers in Florida. Grade 1 winner Capo Bastone joins the Kentucky roster for his third season after retiring to owner Frank Stronach s Adena Springs South in 2015, while Grade 3 winner City Wolf stood elsewhere in Florida before being moved to Stronach s Florida farm and later Kentucky. The most prominent example of a fairly recent call-up gone right is Malibu Moon, who entered stud at Country Life Farm in Maryland and later became a classic sire in Kentucky. Owned by B. Wayne Hughes, Malibu Moon was retired to the Pons family s Country Life Farm in 2000 with a strong pedigree but just two starts before being sidelined by injury. The son of A.P. Indy spent his first four seasons in Maryland What you need to do is make sure the success is real and it s not a blip because if you bring the horse to Kentucky and he falters, they ll look at your horse skeptically John G. Sikura before moving to Castleton Lyons in Lexington in 2004 and later down Iron Works Pike to Spendthrift Farm for the 2008 breeding season. Spendthrift Farm general manager Ned Toffey was still working at Three Chimneys when Malibu Moon was establishing his reputation in Maryland and when he made the move to Castleton Lyons but said he was aware of the buzz the stallion quickly generated. He was a horse that immediately started getting great-looking foals, Toffey said. I remember Josh [Pons] telling me he started developing a cult following based on the foals alone, so there was this little grassroots support building for him. That early enthusiasm gained even more traction once Malibu Moon got runners, led in his first crop by multiple Grade 2 winner Perfect Moon. The stallion was moved to Kentucky while his debut crop was 2, but his legacy in Maryland was defined by his second crop, which included champion juvenile Declan s Moon and Grade 1 winner Malibu Mint. I think Declan s Moon was the real game-changer, Toffey said. When they can get the national horse that goes beyond the regional and gives you something to be able to sell seasons with, then you know that you ll be able to get continued support. That s what you need for a horse to make a transition. Malibu Moon continued to live up to his early returns, siring multiple Grade 1 winner Life At Ten in his first Kentucky crop and later siring 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb and Grade 1 winners Carina Mia, Devil May Care, and Ask the Moon, among others. Spendthrift has maintained its relationship with Country Life Farm since Malibu Moon departed and currently entrusts Super Ninety Nine and Freedom Child to the Pons family. Spendthrift also stands stallions in Louisiana and New York. The partnership between Spendthrift and its regional affiliates has produced success in the past, but Toffey noted that the farm also has begun finding solutions to keep new stallions with potential holes in their résumés at the Kentucky base, removing the need to move them in the first place. Toffey highlighted Temple City as an example of a stallion whom farm management was on the fence about standing in Kentucky but turned out to be a pleasant surprise with the proper support. Temple City bore fruit early, with threetime Grade 1 winner Miss Temple City and Grade 2 winner and Kentucky Derby starter Bolo coming from his first crop. In our initial discussions, we thought he was probably a regional horse because his race record was a little limited, Toffey said. He got started a little later, he was a Grade 3 winner, Grade 1-placed, and the Grade 1 placing was long on the turf, and we worried those were going to be negatives. By that time, we had the infrastructure in place to get the support we wanted for a horse like that, he added. We came up with a new spin on one of our programs and did a one-and-done deal on Share the Upside [which typically requires a two-year commitment]. That was a horse that was priced aggressively low, so we got interest. In the past, there was a good chance that was a horse that would have started in a regional market, but we had had enough experience at that level of the market here that we were able to make it work so you can start that kind of horse in Kentucky.
