Please Read carefully!

2 *All, Franklin, Clinton, and Essex County 4-H families are invited to attend Horse Camp, held May 18-20, 2018, at the FRANKLIN County Fairgrounds in Malone, NY. This event is open to all 4-Hers enrolled in the horse project, even if you do not bring a horse. Registration is $35 for the first 4-Her in a family (not to exceed $60 per family). Mail registration and check or register online. Credit card payment available. (Insert online registration link) All horses coming to camp are required to have proof of current rabies vaccinations. (in the current calendar year but at least 14 days prior to Horse Camp) and negative Coggin s test (conducted during the current or previous calendar years). Please send a copy of both with your Horse Camp Registration. Please make sure your horse s name is the same on all forms. You must have copies with each horse/pony to get onto the fairgrounds; papers will be checked at the gate. Keep your original Coggin s and rabies certificates in a safe place at home! You may arrive no earlier than 3 PM Friday. (Unless you are scheduled for set-up duties)horses and riders must be checked in by 8:00 AM Saturday. If you will be arriving later than 7:30 PM on Friday evening (because you need to make two trailer trips, etc), please make note of that on the registration form. You will need to check in with Pat or Rick Banker before unloading your horses. *You are welcome to bring snacks for the weekend to share. If you do, please label with any allergens (peanuts, peanut oil, nuts, etc.). Please also bring a reusable water bottle or coffee mug (or both) clearly labeled with your name. We are trying to reduce some of the garbage and very few disposable cups will be available for the weekend. Bringing tents to sleep in inside the 4-H building is ok and lots of fun! Also, please keep your personal belongings inside the tent. This helps us keep aisles clear for safety purposes. There are camper spaces available. $25 for the weekend. Check must be separate from Horse Camp payment and made out to Franklin County Ag Society. *Bathrooms and showers are NOT located inside the 4H building. Adult chaperones will be required to walk youth campers to the bathrooms after lights out. Reminder: all youth need to wear an ASTM, approved riding helmet when handling a horse (leading, riding, and driving). Adults need to wear a helmet when riding and driving a horse. *Check your helmet for cracks BEFORE Horse Camp so you will have time to procure a new one. *Meals from dinner on Friday through lunch on Sunday are provided for camp as part of the registration fee. Please be sure to list any dietary or other needs you may have on the registration form so we can provide for them. A menu is included in this packet. *An Activities Section will be available in the 4H building during the day from 10:00-3:00pm. We ask that clubs plan a craft or activity to share with 4H ers. Bring materials, instructions and a finished item. There will be people to help in the building.

3 Enclosed are the registration forms. Please read them carefully they are full of important information. Please complete the enclosed forms and return it to the Franklin County Extension Office by 4:00 PM, April 30 if you wish to have a t- shirt. You may also register online here until May 11 if you do not wish to buy a t-shirt: Mail your Franklin County 4H member check(s) and horse Coggins/rabies certificates to: Cornell Cooperative Extension, 355 West Main St., Malone, NY Make check payable to: CCE Franklin County. * If your Coggin s/rabies won t be back in time for registration but will be back for May 19, please let us know. They may be ed or faxed but must be in-hand when you enter the fairgrounds! *All checks from Clinton or Essex County participants MUST be sent to your home county. Counties will be responsible for sending a single payment to Franklin County CCE. All Parents attending are required to help in the following areas: Kitchen-We would love to have a dedicated parent who would volunteer to work with our wonderful volunteer chef, Ron St. Hilaire, for the weekend. If you like to cook and have fun Let Pat Banker know! Kitchen-1/2 hour before each meal: Set up beverages, serving utensils, make coffee, put out, food on ice or in warmers as needed. After meals- 4H youth should clean up after themselves!!!!! Empty garbage, pick up and sweep. Dishwashers needed and greatly appreciated. Bathrooms- If you use them, pick them up! There will be mops and cleaning equipment in all bathrooms. Bathrooms are between the poultry barn and the cow barn and in the upper horse barn. Indoor Arena Keep area clean of garbage and horse droppings. Outside Arena & Announcer s booth area Keep area clean of garbage, empty garbage cans if needed. Move jumps, mini & trail equipment as needed. Main 4H Building Keep garbage cans emptied with new bags place back in cans. Craft Area in Main Building- Make something pick up after yourself! Remember to take your treasures home with you. Erin Sorrell has volunteered to plan and oversee the craft area with help.

4 What to Bring to Horse Camp Warm outdoor sleeping bag. Ground sheet, cot, or air mattress. The 4-H building floor is hard! Helmet Equestrian footwear (boots) Extra clothing for warm or very chilly weather (raincoat, jacket, dry socks, gloves, etc) Shoes for when not riding (no sandals please) Underwear, socks, jeans, etc Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, and other personal grooming items Sleepwear First aid kit for yourself Sunscreen and fly spray Flashlight (handy at night!) Camera if you want to take pictures Activity supplies (if noted on registration form) Towels (there are showers available) Bottle or mug labeled with your name Tent if you are staying in the 4H building! Cooler with extra drinks/snacks Coggins and Rabies Certificates (have in the truck with driver that is hauling your horse) Hay and grain for Friday night through Sunday afternoon Bedding Water buckets Halter and lead lines (extra would be good) Brushes, hoof pick, other grooming tools Manure fork, wheelbarrow or muck bucket First Aid kit for horses Longe line Lead line with chain Fly spray for your horse Saddles Bridles Girths Saddle pads Double ended snaps are handy to hang buckets Leg wraps or shipping boots Stall card with emergency contact information (if you don t have one, we ll have one for you at camp) Clean out your tack room and horse show clothing closet, bring items tagged with your name and the price you are asking for the Tack Swap Table.

5 Tips for Parents Post an activity schedule in the tack stall or keep it with you. Don t be afraid to volunteer to help out. You don t need to be an expert or have any experience. We will teach you new roles if needed. No matter how well planned, things run late/run over, so plan accordingly. We are here for the weekend, relax and enjoy! Don t hesitate to ask questions. We are happy to answer your questions. The PA system cannot be heard in all areas of the fairgrounds. Please check times so you don t miss a class! Menu Menu items based on availability and are subject to change. Friday Night- Spaghetti Dinner! Unload and join us for a homemade dinner. Available from 6:30-8:00pm *Remember to bring a water bottle with your name on it to save on paper cups! *Snack table will be available. Bring a snack to share. Popcorn Machine and Igloos with drinks will be available all day in the 4H building. *Snacks-Please bring a snack to share. Healthy is best! Caution! 4-H Building 1 to 3 PM 4H Training Race #1 and #2 *4H ers will present a Racehorse barn & Grandstands Cooler to the winner of each race 4 to 5 PM Clean Up and Departure (Monday is a Holiday!) Everywhere

7 Starting at noon on Sunday, the Standardbred race horses will be on the track warming up for 2 special races they will be running for 4H. Please put all horses in the barn or tied to a trailer. CAUTION when crossing the track for any reason! They will be training their young horses. 2:00pm, we will all go to the grandstands to watch the races! 4H ers will be asked to present a cooler to the winner of each race. Lots of photo ops! A retired racehorse may be available to give rides in an exercise cart to youth who have helmets and boots with them. Thank you to the drivers and trainers who have agreed to put on the event for us! Please-NO horses, youth, parents, wheelbarrows will be allowed on the side ramp, wash rack and race horse area of the upper barn until after 9:00am on Saturday. 2 yr- old race horses will be working at that time and we don t want anyone injured horse or human! Race drivers and owners will be available in the 4H building after lunch to answer questions about racing, how to become a driver, questions about the Standardbred breed, equipment display, and more. Building and Grounds To ensure that we can feed, keep safe, teach, and have fun with a group of over 150+ people, we all need to pitch in and work together. If you are part of this camp, you are required to help! Horse Stalls It is your responsibility to clean and strip your stall before you leave. Please clean any garbage, hay, or bedding from the barn aisles. No bedding will be provided. Anyone leaving a dirty horse or tack stall, OR Horse Trailer Parking Area or Camper Space will be charged $25. You must have your stall checked before you leave. Tying to Trailer If you will be only attending one day you will NOT be allowed to tie your horse to your trailer for the day. You may tie to your trailer ONLY when saddling or while getting equipment. Everyone will be required to clean all hay and manure from the area around your trailer before you leave. Park ONLY in designated trailer parking area. There are plenty of stalls for everyone. *ABSOLUTELY NO RIDING ON THE RACETRACK OTHER THAN WHEN CROSSING* Watch for racehorses before 8:00am All youth are expected to follow the 4-H Member Code of Conduct and all adults the 4-H Adult Code of Conduct. A complete registration includes registration form (including 4-Her s activity registration, volunteer registration, and club leader s signature), participant health forms, copies of horse health forms, and full payment (Check- Send to Clinton or Essex if you are from those counties). If you register online you will still need to send your check, horse health forms, and medical release form to the Franklin 4H office. A designated adult must supervise 4-H er at all times. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate, but if they are unable to attend, another adult must be designated as the 4-Her s chaperone. o Staying overnight is not mandatory. o Youth staying overnight must have an adult chaperone that is also staying overnight. o NO ONE is allowed to sleep overnight in the horse barns. Horses will be monitored by designated adult volunteers. Leave contact numbers and where you may be reached in an emergency on your stall card. o NO participant may leave the fairgrounds for any reason unless a parent or guardian signs them out at the Announcer s Booth and/or 4-H Building. That includes going to a camper!!!

8 o Camper Spaces will be available for $25 for the weekend with water/sewer/electric. 4H Appropriate behavior will be expected by all staying in the camping area. You will be required to sign-out for the night as if you were going home. Payment for camper space will be by separate check made out to Franklin County Ag Society on behalf of the Franklin County Fairgrounds. Riders will have their helmets and boots checked. Helmets must be ASTM/SEI approved and in good condition. Footwear must be equestrian, with a smooth to lightly treaded sole, approximately a 1/4 minimum heel, and ankle support. No work, hiking, dance, or boots with heavy tread will be allowed. All Cloverbud riders age 5 to 7 must have an adult with them at all times when handling or riding a horse. One horse per stall. (Exception-Minis) No smoking on grounds, in barns or buildings. All parents will be volunteered to work during meals, clean-up, with moving equipment, grounds clean-up, garbage, bathroom patrol and cleaning, and Whatever. All adults associated with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) 4-H programs are required to accept and adhere to the same standards of behavior as their 4H ers and Leaders. Tack and Clothing Swap Sell, swap, or donate your good, used show clothing, boots, tack, and equipment. Available Saturday all day & Sunday until Noon in the 4H building. Please Tag all your items ahead of time with your name and the price of the item. You will need to tag each of your items before leaving them for consignment. Bring your tagged items with you to Camp. Consignment drop-offs can be made between 7 and 8 PM Friday night or 8 and 9 AM Saturday morning. All unsold items must be picked up Sunday morning before lunch. This is not a 4-H fundraiser; 4-H makes no profit on this. Free items must be labeled as Free.
