2 From the President's Pen Our 2014 State Championship Show were held on the 25 th May at the Wallangara Pony Club Ground with a modest attendance of keen & good natured Members. Numbers of entries fluctuate from year to year; but we d love to see more of our horses at our Show! Feedback from Members suggested that the Show was a little late in the season & some were not happy with the venue; but with a new Committee, consideration of costs and strong competition for a suitable venue we made the best of availability & appreciate the assistance of the Wallangara Management. I congratulate our new Secretary, Karen McLean who did an admirable job in organisation. Until you have tried it, organising a Show can appear deceptively simple! Our main Judges for the day; Dianne Bennitt (Partbreds) and Janine Olsen (Purebreds) did an excellent job, supported by energetic Ring Stewards. Their comments were generally complimentary, and both felt that the atmosphere of friendship among competitors was outstanding. There was discussion regarding dress codes for Competitors & did the AHAA have a Dress Code? The answer to this is YES! The AHAA web page; under the Competitions heading has detailed information regarding acceptable attire for both Led & Ridden classes. Basically, the choice is between traditional Spanish attire (or a modified Simple Spanish attire) and English Riding Dress; as per information below taken from the AHAA webpage. Gents: Correct Spanish dress (Doma Vaquera or Doma Classica - see below) may be worn in Purebred Spanish and Hispano-Arab classes. OR Sober-coloured smart and sensibly-styled jacket, e.g. tweed, navy, dark brown, black, plum, wine, bottle green, dark check - or, alternatively, a sober-coloured waistcoat on hot days. Sober-coloured trousers. Long-sleeved shirt with collar, plus tie, bow-tie or stock. Sensible footwear for running a horse out in-hand. A hat is optional - akubra, bowler, trilby, or flat cap set firmly on the head. OR Full English riding dress, as for Ridden Showing LADIES: options are: Correct Spanish dress (Doma Vaquera or Doma Classica with culottes, NOT a skirt - see below) may be worn in Purebred Spanish and Hispano-Arab classes. OR Jacket/waistcoat and trousers as for gentlemen. Long-sleeved shirt or blouse with collar, plus tie, bow-tie or stock. Sensible footwear for running a horse out in-hand. A hat or headscarf is optional, but must be set firmly on the head. OR Full English riding dress, as for Ridden Showing Keeping in mind that our horses are of Spanish origin, the AHAA Council supports the adherence to the Dress Codes above. Traditional Spanish attire is sober, earthy tones in colour & while we recognise the expense of purchasing genuine Spanish equipment & attire; the alternative Simple Spanish look should reflect the traditional style & colours ie sober colours, not vivid coloured or extravagantly decorated costumes. Short skirts, bare legs &/or midriffs & organza hats do not really have a place in a Spanish horse class. In the same way that the Australian Stock Horse dress code identifies the Australian origin of their breed; we hope that our competitors will do the same for our Spanish breed. If you choose Traditional or Simple Spanish attire, it is appropriate that your horse is turned out in the Spanish fashion, with a Serretta & free flowing mane & tail. English Riding Attire would more appropriately be accompany a horse which has a plaited mane & tail; and this might better suit those people who have Dressage & Eventing horses with short manes & square trimmed tails. Footwear must comply with Safety requirements (upper part of foot must be covered). Remember: there is no expectation that Purebreds MUST be left unplaited or Partbreds MUST be plaited. However, as part of the Breed Standard makes reference to the abundant Mane & Tail of the Spanish Horse; so you may wish to take advantage of a generous mane & tail by leaving them unplaited & dress accordingly. Classical Head & Best Mane & Tail Classes are judged, evaluating the animals with attributes mentioned in the Breed Standard (ie the most Spanish ): These are not part of the required National Show & State Show program; but were introduced in WA several years ago to give members with unridden horses something more to enter. It therefore is reasonable that entrants in this class (Pure & Partbreds) will have unplaited manes & tails so that Judges can make an accurate appraisal. [ the class is not for the best plaited mane & tail ]. Congratulations to all our Members who competed and/ or helped to make the day so successful.

3 The Secretary's Note Firstly, I wish to thank all members who braved the foreboding weather forecast and attended the 2014 AHAA-WA State Championship Show. Although the day presented some very short, intense down pours in the morning, the weather improved and even turned on some hot steamy sunshine! All in all the show went on! I was very happy to see such a wonderful group of competitors! The Judges were very impressed by the friendly atmosphere! Your encouraging well wishes and pats on the back to one another is something that has been lost in the show world. Well done everyone! I also wish to extend a big Thank You to our Judges. Dianne Bennit, Janine Olsen, Tracy Hockley and Jan Jankowski. Without complaint our judges endured the weather and judged their classes. Jan and Brenda even setup and took down the horse and handler arena. How good was that! Along with the judges, were all the helpers on the day! The following people deserve a mention (in no particular order); Stephanie Payne, Katherine George, Julia Mounsey, Lindy Slee, Rebecca Desmond, Mr. Desmond, Morag and Martin Duley, Felicity (friend of Janine Olsen), Brenda Morgan, Stephanie Ivatts, Belinda Moreton, Margaret Cala and Linda Fletcher. Applologies Due to mechanical problems, horse health issues and personal health problems, 6 of our member entries were unable to attend the 2014 AHAA-WA State Championship Show. All 6 were missed and it was unfortunate that they were unable to attend. I look forward to seeing you and your horses at the next event! Well done everyone!
