1 Thank you for your Support Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary P.O. Box 403 Tesuque, NM Fall/Winter 2014 This Issue Fall/Winter All Good Wild Horse News Dec 2014 Greetings from Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary Photo by Tony Bonanno All Good Wild Horse News Roaming Wild: New Documentary Showcases Possibilities for Wild Horses Dec 2014 Wild Investors Campaign The Sky Mountain band of mustangs made their big-screen debut along with wild horses of the Carson National Forest in the world premiere of Roaming Wild at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival earlier this year. Stunning footage of the mustangs running free at Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary and of wild horses roaming the Carson interwoven with an intelligent examination of diverse perspectives illuminate the challenges and possibilities facing wild horses in our country today. Cont d: Greetings from Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary Their bond and capacity to adapt to their ever-changing world are an inspiration and always reminds us why the sanctuary exists.
2 Roaming Wild, Cont d: All Good Wild Horse News Roaming W ild is the first public view of Sky Mountain s work with our partners, Mt. Taylor Mustangs and Carson National Forest, in keeping wild horses free in numbers healthy for them and the range through using the immunocontraceptive Porcine Zona Pellucida, or PZP. The film captures the stark contrast in treatment of mustangs in the West, showing how wild horses in the Carson Forest are gathered using Mt. Taylor Mustang s no-chase methods, darted with PZP and released back into their home territory deep in the forest to live free. Elsewhere, Roaming W ild documents the traditional practice of running mustangs down with helicopters for round-up and re moval to holding facilities where they face an uncertain future. Roaming Wild is currently screening throughout the U.S., with sold-out shows in Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico, and made its international debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Special thanks to filmmaker Sylvia Johnson and her team for a thoughtful, gorgeous fil m for wild horses. 3 Greetings from Sky Mountain We hope this finds you and yours well and with much to be grateful for with the season of light approaching. At the sanctuary, we are grateful as the Sky Mountain band of mustangs romps during games of wild horse tag, grazes on rich summer grass, wanders among shimmering bronze and gold autumn leaves, or thunders through the snow with manes and tails flying. They embody our sanctuary vision of wild horses thriving in wild places. The band is inspiration, hope and wildness in the tumultuous world around them. We continue to expa nd the circle that is Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary, building the land base and our efforts for mustangs as well as the community of members that surrounds them, dra wing our map for growth from the strategic plan develope d last year. The sanctuary has grown with the addition of 250 acres for winter range. This expansion provides the mustangs with protein-rich gramma grass to keep them healthy during the cold, shorter days of winter while resting the range of the main sanctuary in alignment with Sky Mountain s whole ecosystem approach to keeping wild horses and land healthy. Welcome to Janney and Rajani, two young wome n with Inspire Santa Fe, a new youth mentoring initiative launched this year to help young people create a world that is more beautiful and just. At Sky Mountain, we believe in sharing the sanctuary with our next generation to connect them with wildlife, wild places, and the possibilities and challenges facing both. We are very excited to be a part of this opportunity for youth, and thank Seth Biderman and Todd Lopez of Inspire Santa Fe for choosing Sky Mountain as a mentoring organization. We also welcome and thank the many new members who joined the sanctuary this year and appreciate those who joined in our earliest days and continue to support the sanctuary s vision and action for wild horses. As we reflect with deep gratitude on the wildness of mustangs and the community that is the sanctuary, we wish you all joy, blessings, and hope this season and in the coming New Year. Cheers, --John, Karen, Karen, Russell & Teresa
4 Your Support in Action Sky Mountain s New Wild Investors Campaign At Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary, we bring together a love for mustangs and the wild with humanity, science, and direct experience with wild horses on the ground in all that we do. Your support enables us to translate this into action for maximum impact for wild horses and wild lands. T he results are that today, 75 wild horses are free because of the haven provided for the mustang band that roams for life at Sky Mountain, because of the sanctuary s work with our partners in the Carson National Forest and because of each of you. We see economic impact as another key consideration along with humanity, science, and experience. From 2005 to 2011, the Carson Forest s average cost to round-up and remove each wild horse that was successfully adopted was $2571, while the Bureau of Land Management s (BLM) average cost for mustangs removed from the wild was $4254 per mustang. In 2014, there are now more wild horses in short and long-term holding facilities with the BLM than are roaming free. Over 50,000 mustangs live in holding at a cost of $46,000 per wild horse for unadopted mustangs that end up living the remainder of their lives in these facilities (BLM, 2014). For mustangs whose adoptions fail, the future is uncertain, and often results in slaughter. Treating mustangs in the wild of the Carson Forest with PZP currently costs approximately $330 per mustang annually, and gives wild horses what is priceless for them their freedom. As we at Sky Mountain continue to sharpen our philosophy and build the sanctuary, we are developing a wholeecosystem approach to investing in the wild. Through expanding our application of humane principles, science, environmental conservation and economics in our work, we seek to invest in the wild by keeping mustangs free at the sanctuary and in the Carson Forest in numbers that are healthy for wild horses and all wildlife that share the range, for the land, and for the water. At the sanctuary, this translates into ensuring that each Sky Mountain mustang has a minimum of 30 acres on which to roam free with elk, deer, coyote, turkey, and all other species, with diverse terrain, natural shelter and quality water. In the Carson Forest, this means intensifying work with our partners to realize Sky Mountain s vision for mustangs living free and thriving in wild places by eliminating round-up and removal using PZP and achieving balanced herd numbers, environmental conservation, and the most effective use of tax-payer dollars. We invite you to invest in the wild for the wild horses, wildlife and wild lands that help to sustain us all. Thank you for making this possible. --John, Karen, Karen, Russell & Teresa
5 Wild Investors for Wild Horses Campaign Carson Forest Mustangs The bond among mustangs is an inspiration and always reminds us of why the sanctuary exists. Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary s mission is to protect wild horses. We provide a haven where threatened mustangs roam while engaging in humane, sciencebased action to keep mustangs free in the wild. We invite you to follow the adventures of the mustangs at: Sky Mountain Wild Horse Sanctuary is a haven where mustangs belong only to wide-open sky, wild land and each other. Sky Mountain Wild s successes include providing sanctuary for unadoptable mustangs while partnering with the U.S. Forest Service and Mt. Taylor Mustangs to create the first project on Forest Service lands in the country to keep mustangs free in the wild by using the immunocontraceptive PZP. With our Wild Investors Campaign, we seek to build a community of members to invest in the sanctuary s efforts for wild horses, wildlife and wild land.
