3 President s PERSPECTIVE By Molly Fine The New Year is here! The Annual Awards Banquet was held this past weekend and was just great. Everyone had a great time all 170 of us! We had 30 more in attendance than last year, and what fun it was! The food and service were outstanding, and we have Kelly Allgauer and the Hilton to thank for that. Thank you to the Allgauers for our dinner wine. The raffle was great, too, and thank you to all who contributed. The awards were well-received, and the ribbons were beautiful. Thank you to the sponsors who helped defray the banquet costs, and to the volunteers who made things happen. By all measures, the night was a great success. The new board met on January 15 and began to look at items we will be addressing in 2019: The Dressage and Schooling Show committees will be looking at changing the rules for year-end awards to include Western Dressage. The Dressage Committee will be looking at methods for affiliating and supporting clinics at local barns. The Eventing Committee is going to be revising the rules for year-end awards, and will be planning activities for the New Year. The Educational/Social Committee will be planning events for member participation. The Schooling Show Committee will be working with the Dressage committee to incorporate Western Dressage and classes for the very beginners in our schooling show program, as well as exploring how to strengthen ties with. We need a lot of help to pull these programs off, and are looking for volunteers for each of these committees. Competitor is responsible for following the rules and completing the requirements of the schooling shows. Competitor MUST send a completed Region 2 Catherine B. Jacob Schooling Show Registration Form for each horse/rider combination to the Region 2 Points Person with a check for $25.00 for each level or $45.00 for two adjacent levels, BEFORE their scores are eligible. Scores submitted must be postmarked by NOVEMBER 5. Show year will be from November 1 to October 31 of the following year. Source: President s Perspective continued from page 3 before our recognized show, and have added several opportunity classes during the recognized show, giving the schooling show participant the opportunity to compete in three shows in one weekend. There will be competitor parties on both Friday and Saturday nights. Come and join the fun. We are excited about new prospects for clinics in 2019, and will be getting information out about a USDF awards program for schooling shows. Competitors in recognized shows, remember that you have do Safe Sport training BEFORE you compete in USEF/USDF licensed competitions in 2019 and beyond. The training is provided by the US Center for Safe Sport. It is free, and when you renew your USEF membership, you will have access to a portal on the USEF website to complete the training. There is a 30-day grace period for those members who are renewing after December 1. This requirement is Federally-mandated. Don t mess up your show season bypassing this requirement, or you will not be allowed to show in USDF/USEF-recognized shows. Your best bet is to renew early and take the training right after you renew. It takes about two hours and is very easy to follow. Stay warm in this cold weather. I hope you had a great holiday season, and I hope that all of you can be part of the action as volunteers, competitors and participants. Happy Riding! 2019 Wayne Eventing Derby By Katie Lindsay This year the Wayne Eventing Derby s traditional dates were usurped by two immovable date conflicts: Easter, and the Land Rover Kentucky Five Star Event (née Rolex). Consequently, this year s Derby weekend will be May 3, 4 and 5, The same levels of competition will be offered as last year, as well as the Derby Within A Derby. See the prize lists and entry blanks for entry information and criteria at The popular Ride A Test and Move Up Challenge will also be featured. Entries open March 26. Everything takes place at Lamplight Equestrian Center in Wayne, Illinois. This is a perfect, low-stress opportunity to knock the winter rust off of you and your horse! Circle the date! 6 A Look Back: February 2008 Scribe Articles Editor s Note: February is a traditionally light month for the Scribe, so I decided to go back ten years to see what the club was up to. I found these great articles by members (who are still active with today!), with great observations that have held up over the years. Enjoy! What Does My Instructor Expect? By Deidre Vegeer (Reprinted from February 2008 Scribe) I ve been wondering, what does my instructor really expect/want from me? What do I really want/expect from my in-structor? I love my instructor. She is overly educated, a massive overachiever, and kind and hard all at the same time. She forgives me and humbles me. Most of all; she encourages me every time I ride with her. There are so many snippets of wisdom I have gotten from her; I cannot list them all. Sometimes I look at my big beast (a.k.a. the Cow) when she is riding him (because I just couldn t get it ) and I think, I don t deserve either one of these two. My instructor always tells me that I do deserve it! Much like how we have to pick our horse(s), I think we have to pick our instructor. In return, they should pick us. It should be, in a perfect world, a mutual enterprise. After all, the three of you are working toward something. Hopefully, that something is a better ride on a better-performing horse with a better-performing rider! That being said, I made a list (I am a list maker! It helps me focus!). Albeit, the list is probably not complete. Some people may or may not agree with it. The list, however, works for me. Take it or leave it, here it is: What I think my riding Instructor wants from me: 1. Be on time for my lessons. a. Be tacked up. b. Be cleaned up. c. Be dressed appropriately. d. Boots or half chaps, helmet, whip (if needed), polo wraps or protective boots for my horse, clean shirt for me (with a collar is preferred), clean riding breeches, clean saddle and bridle, etc. e. Be warmed up BEFORE the lesson starts. 2. Remember, my instructor is not a mind reader. a. My instructor does not know what I worked on during the week. b. My instructor does not know how my horse behaved during the week. c. My instructor does not know what I am thinking. d. My instructor cannot answer my questions if I don t ask them. 3. She/he expects me to ride my horse BETWEEN my lessons. That means I ride 5-6 days a week (including my lesson day). 4. She/he expects me to state what my intentions are for my horse and me. For example, I want to show and I would like to eventually get to 3rd level Dressage or I am just a pleasure rider and I like going to clinics. 5. Remember, my riding instructor is only a human being. She/he has good days and bad days too. 6. She/he expects me to be polite and respectful. 7. Ask questions (see #2d). 8. She/he expects me to educate myself outside of my lessons i.e. partake in riding clinics as a rider or observer (take notes), go to shows, read related articles and/or books. 9. She/ he expects to be paid (don t make them ask for their check that s just tacky). 10. A Thank you at the end of your lesson goes a long way in the realm of politeness (even if the lesson wasn t stellar). Remember, you need them just as much, if not MORE, then they need you (and they may not need you!). 11. If you don t like or understand what your instructor taught you, TALK TO THEM about it. (see #2d and #7 -- catching a theme here?) What I look for in a Riding Instructor: 1. A person who is educated in the field I am riding in. 2. A person who continues to educate and advance themselves in the field I am riding in. 3. A person who is willing to work with my horse and me at the level we are, pushing us when needed and backing off when appropriate (and is okay when I break down in tears thinking I am the worst rider in the world, but a little later they are willing to cheer me on when my horse and I finally get it ). 4. A person who has respect for my horse and me. 5. A person who places value on my horse. a. She/he seeks to do what is best for my horse and my horse s education (even if it doesn t look pretty at the mo-ment). 6. A person who places value on me. a. She/he is willing to tell me where I really need to work on something and where I am doing well. 7. A person who can challenge my horse and me (see #3). 8. A person who is presentable, polite and professional in manner. 9. A person who is willing to ride my horse, when needed. 10. A person who is willing to stop and explain it to me and/or my horse when one of us is just NOT getting that elusive it. 11. A person who I can talk to about my horse and ride(s). These are just my thoughts on the subject. I hope they spur you onto thinking about what your list would entail. continued on page 7 Febuary 2019 Page 6

7 Just Do it!: Riding in My First Public Clinic By Karen Fitt (Reprinted from February 2008 Scribe) Riding in a public clinic for the first time can be a very daunting experience one I almost backed out of at the last minute. But going through with it was one of the best riding experiences I ve had. As you make your New Year s riding resolutions and put your plans together on how to accomplish them, I encourage you to consider actually riding in a clinic, especially if you ve never done it before. It can give an improvement boost to your riding for a long time after the clinic, and it isn t as painful an experience as you might think. Here s what happened with my first public clinic experience. I received the Suzanne von Dietze book, Balance in Movement, for Christmas last year from my trainer. It s quite a thorough discussion of human and horse anatomy and how one influences the other when riding, and more importantly, how problems with balance by the rider directly impact the horse s movements or perceived problems. It quickly became apparent to me that von Dietze had a very special understanding to pass on to her students. Therefore, when I heard that von Dietze was visiting the US for her first-ever clinic tour in this country, I was among the first to send in my application. Then the doubts and nervous pangs started. As a Training Level rider trying to move up to First Level, was I good enough to put my riding to public scrutiny? Would I make a fool of myself? What if I couldn t properly control my horse or perform the movements correctly? Would I be too nervous to ride in front of experienced equestrians for three days in a row? What was I thinking went I sent in my application? I calmed myself down by reasoning that I probably wouldn t be chosen, but when I learned that I had been, the strangest things started to happen to my riding several weeks before the clinic. I began having problems with movements I thought I d already mastered. Things got so bad that I suggested to my trainer the week before the clinic that I should cancel. But she wisely told me, No way! And, in retrospect, I m glad she did. The clinic turned out to be one of the best learning experiences I ve had. The accommodations at Sunflower were wonderful. Phil, the manager, was even able to get a farrier to attend to my horse s lost shoe within an hour of our arrival at the stable. Von Dietze couldn t have been more accommodating, and immediately put every rider at ease. She spoke to each rider at the start of their rides individually, with her microphone off, so she and the rider could converse privately. My pre-clinic tension had manifested itself in my back with rather painful results, so she immediately gave me back-stretching exercises to do on my horse. As we worked through that first lesson, I became looser and more relaxed, and my horse responded with more evenly balanced gaits. The first 45 minutes flew by, and I was sorry to learn that my time was over. I had barely noticed the auditors, much to my amazement. I greatly looked forward to the next two days rides. Von Dietze built on each rider s strengths while fixing key weaknesses. I have audited many clinics in the past and usually found some good points to take away, but after this clinic I ended up with over seven single-spaced, typed pages of notes! One of the keys I use to determine if a clinic was worthwhile is how long after the clinic I still refer to my notes. It s now six months after the clinic, and my notes are as useful as ever. Another plus is that my trainer audited the entire clinic, so we were able to use the same terminology and exercises in my very next lesson, and still do today. That has proven to be very valuable as well. Sue Gerstenberger wrote an excellent summary of the many tips, lessons and exercises that resulted from the clinic in an earlier issue of this newsletter, so I won t rehash that information, I ll just highlight some of the things that I ve found particularly useful over the past several months. If you, too, are a lower level rider, perhaps you ll also find them beneficial. Posting Trot When posting, keep the rising part small. It keeps the lower leg more still. Move hips forward from the knees. Wait for the horse s movement. Think, sitting down forward. Think landing, not sitting. Land to the front of the saddle and roll to the back seat bones. If you land to the back of the saddle, it s harder to get up again in time. Also your horse will slow down because he feels your weight when you land, and it puts your lower leg out of position. When landing at the trot, alternate your seat bones in the center of the saddle right in center, then left in center. The one that s easier to put in the center is where you have a tendency to collapse. Using alternating seat bones requires the rider to balance more. This frees the horse s gait. To get better balanced, change the diagonal every stride: down-downup-down-down-up, etc. or even the more difficult up-up-down-upup-down. The horse waits more for the rider if you re always changing the diagonal. Then go back to posting trot. On the stride when you rise, the leg must not change. Just the hips go forward. Don t hold with the leg. Control with the tummy muscles. Stretchy trot circle: Keep your weight slightly back so the horse will stretch his neck more. Encourage the horse to stretch 1 cm more at the posting trot by sitting 1 cm back in the saddle. But don t lean forward when doing so. Trot transitions: Go into the trot by just stretching up and lengthening your chest. Minimal leg needed. Canter Keep the horse s head exactly between the shoulders to keep the inside shoulder free. Head should not be in front of the inside shoulder. If horse s head is sideways, he avoids using his back. On a downward transition, trot rhythm is faster than the canter rhythm for your body. Grow in the upper body and get quick with your hips. Think go forward into trot on downward transitions. To slow the canter, stretch your upper body and wait for the movement. Don t push too much with your seat because then the horse can t finish the stride. Just follow the movement; wait for it. Feel that your knee is bent and soft, especially in the landing phase. Slide your seat to the inside for two strides, then middle, then the outside. This exercise helps your leg to hang longer without coming off the horse and with more mobility in the pelvis. Count the canter strides in the corners. Should be four strides, then straight. Counting makes you ride the corners more accurately. General Body Position Leg position is the most important between the hip and knee. A long leg is long from the hip to the knee. Keep the feeling of the knees forward When you shorten your stirrups, your seat bones are in better contact with the saddle. (I had mine one hole too long.) Looking down brings you behind the movement. To keep your legs from clamping, feel for non-existent stirrups e.g. two holes shorter, then two holes longer, then two holes shorter, then one hole longer. Between your hands and hips, visualize a square. The distance between the hands and the hips should never vary. This is the taboo zone. Nothing must go in there. Hands should move sideways, never backward. The outside rein is to drive, not to hold. You must give forward with the outside rein as much as you want the horse to bend. The bottom line: Don t think about it or fret over it too long. Just find a clinic that you can afford, and go for it. You ll be glad you did. February 2019 Page 7

15 Grant Program The Board of Directors has updated our Grant Program for our membership. We are very excited about this program and hope that more members begin sending in applications for upcoming clinics, whether, USEA, USDF or USEF sanctioned. As always, the funds must be used for tuition only. members can qualify every year. To qualify for a grant, clinics must be with trainers farther than 100 miles from the Chicagoland area. The clinics must be produced by, USEA, USDF, USEF or must be an approved clinic. In return, asks that the recipient of the grant write a detailed article about the clinic for the next issue of the Scribe. The article should be a minimum of one typed page and may include photographs (please provide photographer credit). Other qualifications are as follows: An applicant must be a member in good standing of for a minimum of six months at the time the clinic is to be held. An application and copy of the clinic entry must be submitted a minimum of 60 days prior to the opening date of the clinic. This will allow the Board of Directors enough time to review and vote on the applicant's request at the next board meeting. One grant per clinic may be awarded. Not every qualified clinic will be awarded a grant. The two main factors that will be considered when awarding grants are the following: volunteer hours totaling a minimum of 5 in the past calendar year and each applicant s past riding experience without regard for number of shows entered or success in the show ring. The amount funded by per clinic is $200 $400, or the cost of the clinic tuition, whichever is less, and will be voted on by the board. The grant funds may only be used for the clinic the applicant anticipates participating in as a rider, and not an auditor. Funds may not be used for stabling, hauling or other associated expenses, other than the cost of the clinic tuition. Grant funding may vary each year depending on the amount available and number of qualified applicants, and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Funds not used in a given year will be rolled over to the next year. In cases where the grant recipient does not participate in the requested clinic or an article is not submitted within a month of participating in the clinic, the funds granted will not be sent out and will be reallocated back. This will allow the money to be used for another applicant. All grant applicants will be notified of the decision by phone or after the board has voted. Checks will be mailed to the applicant only after the Scribe article has been received. February 2019 Page 15
