3 President s PERSPECTIVE By The show season is coming up quickly, and many of us are trying to put the final touches on the tests we will be performing this season. Others are getting ready for those long trail rides in the great weather, or getting their horses in condition for cross-country. Why not start your season off with a clinic to help make your equine partner bomb-proof and to help you, the rider, cope better with show jitters? Be sure to attend the Pressure Proof Clinics Equestrian Sport Psychology and Cross-Training Seminar with Heather Kuenzi on April 14 & 15 at Don Bar Farm. Alison Volpentesta is a great hostess, and the clinic will be fun and educational and give you a great start to the season, no matter what your discipline. On April 28-29, there will be a clinic with George Williams at Tempel Farms. This is George s second time in this area as a clinician for. He was here two years ago and the clinic was enjoyed by all competitors, auditors and volunteers. Let s give George a big welcome once again. Our new board is in place and promises to be an active one. The board has reviewed our Grant program and made several great enhancements. The amount of the grant has been raised to $400 to be used as tuition or clinic costs, and you can apply for grants each year. Be sure to look over the criteria on page 18 and get your application in. Grant recipients are required to write an article about their experience to share with our membership in the Scribe. The activities sponsors and organizes are coordinated by our committees. Fatima Kranz is leading the Dressage Committee, Alison Volpentesta is leading the Eventing Committee, and Cecelia Conway is leading the Schooling Show committee. We always welcome your input to the various committees, and it is a great way to earn volunteer hours for the year end awards, so please volunteer! We are run and governed by volunteers, and we all need to find a way to contribute to make our association the best it can be. Molly Fine In the next couple of months, we will be distributing an survey regarding possible future activities to see what members are interested in. When the survey comes out, please be sure to complete yours and let us know your thoughts. The best to you in this competition year, and Happy Riding! 19 Grant Program The Board of Directors has updated our Grant Program for our membership. We are very excited about this program and hope that more members begin sending in applications for upcoming clinics, whether, USEA, USDF or USEF sanctioned. As always, the funds must be used for tuition only. members can qualify every year. To qualify for a grant, clinics must be with trainers farther than 100 miles from the Chicagoland area. The clinics must be produced by, USEA, USDF, USEF or must be an approved clinic. In return, asks that the recipient of the grant write a detailed article about the clinic for the next issue of the Scribe. The article should be a minimum of one typed page and may include photographs (please provide photographer credit). Other qualifications are as follows: An applicant must be a member in good standing of for a minimum of six months at the time the clinic is to be held. An application and copy of the clinic entry must be submitted a minimum of 60 days prior to the opening date of the clinic. This will allow the Board of Directors enough time to review and vote on the applicant's request at the next board meeting. One grant per clinic may be awarded. Not every qualified clinic will be awarded a grant. The two main factors that will be considered when awarding grants are the following: volunteer hours totaling a minimum of 5 in the past calendar year and each applicant s past riding experience without regard for number of shows entered or success in the show ring. The amount funded by per clinic is $200 $400, or the cost of the clinic tuition, whichever is less, and will be voted on by the board. The grant funds may only be used for the clinic the applicant anticipates participating in as a rider, and not an auditor. Funds may not be used for stabling, hauling or other associated expenses, other than the cost of the clinic tuition. Grant funding may vary each year depending on the amount available and number of qualified applicants, and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Funds not used in a given year will be rolled over to the next year. In cases where the grant recipient does not participate in the requested clinic or an article is not submitted within a month of participating in the clinic, the funds granted will not be sent out and will be reallocated back. This will allow the money to be used for another applicant. All grant applicants will be notified of the decision by phone or after the board has voted. Checks will be mailed to the applicant only after the Scribe article has been received. April 2018 Page 19
