Come and be part of the celebration! As usual, we are looking for sponsors to help offset the cost of our prizes and ribbons. Sponsorship is $50 per class, and sponsors will be listed in the program, featured in the slide show, and can display a small banner in the raffle area. In the past, sponsor participation has made this event one to remember. Thanks in advance for helping us make our banquet fantastic! The Debbie McDonald Clinic held on November 18th and 19th was fabulous, and we have Cindy Lambert s organizational skills to thank for a smoothly run clinic. Cindy kept things running on time, the lunch was excellent, and everyone had a great time. Be sure to read articles by our clinic participants in this month s Scribe. Since the last issue, I have attended two memorable events: The National Dressage Finals, and the USDF Convention. I participated in the finals as a volunteer, and had such glorious jobs as Environmental Engineer (Pooper Scooper), Gate Keeper and ring control. Often these jobs were combined with each other (think Gate Keeper/Pooper Scooper). All of my jobs kept me ringside to witness some beautifully executed dressage tests, from Training to Grand Prix to Musical Freestyles. It was great fun, and I recommend it to anyone who wants a behind-the-scenes experience. The only drawback for competitors, horses and volunteers was that the mornings were cold, and I mean really COLD. We survived, however, and had a great time doing it. Molly Fine The USDF Convention centered around the Board of Governor s meetings (fondly referred to as the BOGs) on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. I attended the convention with board member Cecelia Conway. Friday started with an exercise class which I did not attend, but Cecelia did, and reported that it was a great class. That was followed by region meetings and educational forums. The first BOG began on Friday afternoon, with a State of the Federation speech given by George Williams, President of USDF. George reported on USDF happenings in the last year. Membership is running about the same as the previous year, and there are four new GMOs that have begun operation. The 2018 convention will be in Salt Lake City, UT, and 2019 will be in Savannah, GA. The Federation was able to stay on budget, and next year s budget will remain essentially the same, with some capital items added to complete the takeover of instructor training from USEF to USDF. USEF President Murray Kessler reported that the USEF theme is to Bring the joy of the horse to as many as possible. USEF is revamping programs, their website, and the entire organization, as well as redefining roles and responsibilities. Support of our athletes, both international and domestic, will be USEF s number-one priority. In the coming years, we hope to see our U.S.A teams competing successfully, and hopefully on the podium at national and international events. During the convention, there were many educational opportunities, many of which were focused on horse health. There were also many opportunities to reconnect with old friends and make new ones along the way. All in all, it was a very successful convention. By the time you read this, Christmas will be upon us, and I hope that you all had a great holiday season and are ready to start the new year. Remember, membership is important, and if you have any suggestions, please send them my way. Thanks to all who volunteer, and Happy Riding. 7 Lessons Learned with Leslie Law By Erin Loitfellner We all go to clinics for different purposes. Perhaps we are looking for an expert s opinion on an issue, for exposure for a young horse, for that lightbulb moment, or for the opportunity to meet an idol. But often we walk away from clinics learning so much more than just the lesson of the day. My experiences at the Leslie Law Clinic at Hunter Oaks Equestrian Center did not fall short in reconfirming many riding and life lessons. Here is a brief recap of lessons relearned: 1. It all comes down to that darn inside leg to outside rein! Who would have thought that this universal principle in riding would come back to haunt us?! Leslie focused the flat portion of our warm up on confirming the horses acceptance of these aids. He expertly guided riders through various exercises to establish and confirm this connection. The stadium jumping portion of the ride was designed to prove the point that connection and acceptance on the flat will directly affect the balance and impulsion you are able to create while jumping. Leslie taught a concept rather than giving general riding instruction, which allowed riders to continue on with this piece of knowledge well after the clinic was over. 2. Be present and involved! We pay good money for these opportunities, so make the most of them! Be bold and take the initiative to step into the ring as one of the jump crew. Go outside of your comfort zone and introduce yourself to the clinician while helping out. As in my case, they may recognize you when it s your turn in the saddle! Show up for your lesson a few minutes early. The clinician who appreciated your help earlier may give you a few minutes of one-on-one help. Be present for as many other groups and lessons as you can. Since Leslie s lessons revolved around teaching the same concept to various levels of horse and rider, each group used a different exercise to help establish connection between the inside leg and outside rein. I was able to walk away from the clinic with four different exercises to take home! 3 The squeaky wheel gets the oil. Don t fret if a problem arises, take advantage of the extra help! My coach and travel buddy, Erin Dierks, has a little horse who is occasionally challenged by the distances in combinations. This issue presented itself in her lesson, and Leslie expertly helped her through the issue, resulting in a huge improvement in the quality of the horse s balance, jump and impulsion (all through flatwork of course!). This eye-opening experience helped to show the rider that the horse is truly capable of holding his own at this level. Clinics are not horse shows, no need to be perfect! 4. Camping in the middle of a hay field, in +90⁰F weather, is the reason people think eventers are crazy. That s because we are. The weekend was incredibly hot and humid, and my coach and I decided to save a few bucks by setting up a gypsy camp in the middle of a hay field. After mastering quick showers in the wash rack, it all wasn t so bad. I was, of course, apprehensive about being miles away from the nearest air conditioner on the hottest weekend of the year, but it turned out to be quite fun! Turns out we are all a lot tougher than we think. 5. Take full advantage of every opportunity given to you, but always be thankful! More often than not, people are leery of going out on a limb to try something different; myself, included! However, the times that I ve chosen to buck up and go outside my comfort zone have led to some of the most fun and rewarding adventures. My experience at the Leslie Law Clinic was a culmination of several years of opportunity-seeking. I hitched a ride to Hunter Oaks Equestrian Center with my coach, who has opened door after door for me, ever since I approached her saying, I need help! after a very heartbreaking weekend just two years ago. Less than 10 months prior, I thought I might never form a successful relationship with my horse. But the owner, Alison Volpentesta, convinced me to take a chance on a chestnut mare, and I have had the most fun and successful season in my short career. Plus, I was able to participate in an incredibly educational opportunity, thanks to the generosity of the Grant Program. Getting to experience an educational, fun, and rewarding weekend at the Leslie Law Clinic could not have happened without all of the individuals that helped along the way. I am forever grateful to the Mercier Family and Hunter Oaks Equestrian Center, the Law Family, and of course Alison Volpentesta and Erin Dierks. 9 A Great Learning Weekend with Debbie McDonald By Cindy Lambert On November 18-19, 2017, hosted 2004 Olympian Debbie McDonald for a two-day learning symposium at Accredo Farms at Sunflower Farms. The purpose of the symposium was to improve rider knowledge, with the goal of improved horse performance. The symposium was a multi-faceted learning experience which included traditional rider coaching, as well as lectures and demonstrations. For each lesson, Ms. McDonald began with a horse-centric approach. She added easy-to-understand directions for the riders that resulted in improved relaxation and submission from the horse. At the end of the second day, she stated how pleased she was that each horse/ rider combination showed good improvement. Ms. McDonald also ensured that each coaching session was interactive for both riders and auditors. Each time she had a rider take a break, if the rider did not have a question, she turned to the auditors to answer their questions. During lunch on the first day, Ms. McDonald shared her training philosophy by explaining the top five rider issues that, in her opinion, can block a horse s performance. These issues are: (1) Saddle fit - you need to ensure that your saddle properly fits your horse. The effects of a poorly fitted saddle can range from preventing a horse from performing movements, to disobedient behavior; (2) Poor communication - riders need to ensure that all directives are clear, consistent and use the least amount of pressure to achieve the desired result; (3) Weak sides - both riders and horses have a strong side and a weak side. In order to build equal muscle on each side of the horse, a rider needs to recognize their own weak side and compensate for it; (4) Proper development of the horse from the beginning; (5) Poor horsemanship - riders need to understand the nature of horses and, specifically, their horse s personality. Also on day one, Kate Ballard, SMS Master Saddler and Qualified Saddle Fitter, reinforced Ms. McDonald s comments on proper saddle fit, explaining and demonstrating proper saddle fit. Using Heidi Wright s four-year-old gelding Skyler, Ms. Ballard showed where the saddle should sit on a horse, as well as how to check a saddle for poor condition issues. She emphasized that every saddle should be fitted to a horse by a saddle fitter and that saddle fit should be checked each year. On day two, Dr. Sarah Peters, DVM lectured on how to prevent injuries. This included recognizing and compensating for a horse s confirmation issues, and varying your routine to cross-train, which prevents mental burnout and improves muscle development. You also need to build recovery time into your training program, especially after hard work or when beginning new movements. Below are comments from a few rider and auditor participants: It was a wonderful experience for all who rode and watched! Debbie s insights were right on the money and helped each rider move forward quickly and with learnings that they could take home. ~ Molly Fine I loved riding with Debbie and would welcome any chance to be able to ride with her again! I learned so much from watching the other riders as well, so many tools to bring back to my students. ~ Laura Roesing Ms McDonald has the ability to explain things in a way that is easily understood by both riders and auditors. The atmosphere was extremely comfortable, while remaining focused on education, and the true improvement of connection and training of the horses. ~ Meghann Austin I was able to audit on Saturday and gleaned a lot of useful information. ~ Jennifer Kotylo Kate Ballard demonstrating saddle fitting with Heidi Wright and her horse, Skyler. 10 The Debbie McDonald A Rider s Perspective by Heidi Wright When I received the informing me that I had a spot in the Debbie McDonald Symposium, I was thrilled beyond words. I watched her give a lesson two years ago to Laura Graves, and I remember thinking I would give my left arm to receive that caliber of instruction. I was especially grateful to have a chance to ride with Ms. McDonald because I wanted to get her perspective on training a four-year-old. I bought a young gelding (Skyler) last spring. He had been carefully started but was only under saddle for six months when I brought him home. Was I on the right track? Was I asking too much or not enough? Did I need a course correction? I have this chance to develop a beautiful young horse that has absolutely no baggage and I don t want to screw it up! I knew that the biggest issue we had to focus on was improving the consistency of our connection and throughness. It was interesting to see that improving connection was something Ms. McDonald worked on with virtually every horse and rider. At age four, Skyler is at a tender age to learn good habits and proper expectations that I have set. I appreciated Ms. McDonald s focus on giving us tools to improve the connection without going to the hands. Initially, when Skyler was busy in the mouth and not softening to the contact, she asked us to halt, soften, and walk on. Soon we didn t need to halt, but just to slow down a little, soften and walk on, always followed by my giving him a pet or verbal praise and relaxing the aids as a reward. Skyler tends to lean on his right shoulder, so a simple strategy that worked well was a step of leg yield and then straighten and relax when he softens. The hands stay quiet and in position, and the bending in the rib cage enabled him to soften and take the contact more quietly. By the second day, Skyler came out of the box with a better contact, and with more moments of throughness. We did more sitting trot than I had been doing on my own, and that lead to some moments of confusion going into the canter depart; he gave a little buck in the transitions to canter, no matter how softly I asked. Ms. McDonald Symposium said it was important to work through that because we can t avoid putting our leg on and he needed to accept my leg. We were able to use shoulder fore, travers, renvers, leg yield and transitions within the gait to loosen his back and improve throughness. That helped him listen to my seat better and that got canter off his brain. Then he was able to pick up the canter softly and stayed connected in the transition. Our canter was more balanced and adjustable, versus our normal big-strided, too-fast canter that tends to break into the trot if I try to gather it up at all. His canter felt uphill and in front of my leg, with a slower tempo. One of my biggest takeaways from my ride with Ms. McDonald is that I need to ride him more like a mature horse, because being tentative due to his young age is not helpful to him. He is strong enough for me to sit in more, and I need to set a higher standard for our connection so he doesn t learn that its acceptable to be fussy for the first 10 minutes of the ride. I also loved her gentle, positive approach to training, with lots of praise to the horse so they understand clearly when they got it right. She encouraged all the riders to get the basics right, to focus on the little things and to not worry about the movements, because they will happen naturally when the basics are right. She encouraged me to mix it up with jumping, cavaletti, trail rides, gallops in the field, and generally figure out ways to keep the work interesting. The clinic was also a great auditing experience, and I learned so much watching the other riders. Ms. McDonald engaged the auditors as well, and made a real effort to make sure no questions were left unanswered. It seemed every horse not only became more relaxed, but also more energized and obedient as the lessons progressed. I also really enjoyed the educational bonuses provided by, with Kate Ballard of Stanbridge Saddlery demonstrating common saddle fit concepts, and Dr. Sarah Peters of Forward Equine talking about biomechanics of the dressage horse and how to keep them sound, using Hudson, Amy Grahn s Grand Prix horse, as her model. 18 Grant Program The Board of Directors has updated our Grant Program for our membership. We are very excited about this program and hope that more members begin sending in applications for upcoming clinics, whether, USEA, USDF or USEF sanctioned. As always, the funds must be used for tuition only. members can qualify every two years. To qualify for a grant, clinics must be with trainers from greater than 100 miles from the Chicagoland area. The clinics must be produced by, USEA, USDF, USEF or must be an approved clinic. In return, asks that the recipient of the grant write a detailed article about the clinic for the next issue of the Scribe. The article should be a minimum of one typed page and may include photographs (please provide photographer credit). Other qualifications are as follows: An applicant must be a member in good standing of for a minimum of six months at the time the clinic is to be held. An application and copy of the clinic entry must be submitted a minimum of 60 days prior to the opening date of the clinic. This will allow the Board of Directors enough time to review and vote on the applicant's request at the next board meeting. One grant per clinic may be awarded. Not every qualified clinic will be awarded a grant. The two main factors that will be considered when awarding grants are the following: volunteer hours totaling a minimum of 5 in the past calendar year and each applicant s past riding experience without regard for number of shows entered or success in the show ring. The amount funded by per clinic is $200, or the cost of the clinic tuition, whichever is less. The grant funds may only be used for the clinic the applicant anticipates participating in as a rider, and not an auditor. Funds may not be used for stabling, hauling or other associated expenses, other than the cost of the clinic tuition. Grant funding may vary each year depending on the amount available and number of qualified applicants, and will be awarded on a first come, first served basis. Funds not used in a given year will be rolled over to the next year. In cases where the grant recipient does not participate in the requested clinic or an article is not submitted within a month of participating in the clinic, the funds granted shall be returned to immediately. This will allow the money to be used for another applicant. All grant applicants will be notified of the decision by phone or after the board has voted. Checks will be mailed to the applicant only after the Scribe article has been received. January 2018 Page 18
