4 Level/Division Championships Awards Candidates must have been a STRIDE member, competed with same equine in at least three shows with minimum of six scores, & competed in the highest test of the level at least twice. Championships are calculated by averaging top six scores (through First Level) or three scores for Second & Above. Champions may not win the same level championship on same horse more than once, but Reserve Champions may continue to compete in same level the following year. 11 Golden Oats Essay Stryker, by Sonja Haught It was My macaroni and peanut butter sandwich budget college days were done. I had a JOB! My horseless years would become a thing of the past. The search for my perfect partner began. I looked high and low. I knew him when I saw him. He was in a herd of about thirty horses. When the food wagon chugged by the herd came galloping across the field. He was the most beautiful horse I had ever seen. If he was the horse that was for sale, he was sold. I anxiously waited to see which horse was for sale. It was him! The gorgeous bay gelding that stood out in the crowd. I could not believe my luck! My veterinarian was with me. She attempted to conduct a pre-purchase exam. This beautiful boy was not cooperating. He struck out at the vet. She told me not to buy him because he would kill me. I bought him anyway, and named him Stryker. The following day I returned with my trailer to pick up my gorgeous guy. Two broken fingers and an hour later he was in my trailer along with an older Anglo Arab mare that was his buddy. We drove happily off into the sunset, to our new beginning. Stryker was a very large, unruly, untrained gelding. His mother died when he was born. He was bottle fed by the woman that owned him. They allowed him to rear and put his legs on their shoulders to feed him. When he got bigger he scared people because he would run and rear. He kicked and would strike out with his front legs. I was smitten. We spent hours working on manners. When I finally started riding him I spent hours walking back to the barn after being thrown. Then it happened. Stryker started greeting me at the gate. He stood so I could tack up and we rode all over without my having to walk anywhere. He was my partner. Life was good. I married my husband and had a son and a daughter. Stryker and his old mare companion taught the kids to ride. We went to horse shows and on horse camping trips. We added a few more horses to our herd. My mom wanted to join our family on our horsey treks, so I bought a cart and taught Stryker how to pull it. He pulled my Mom and me over the river and through many miles of woods. Life with Stryker was always a ride. We retired, found a lovely farm and moved our crew to Ocala. The kids grew up and went off to college. Stryker stayed with us in the geriatric crowd. Today Stryker is 37 and he is spending his golden years in the pasture at home with six of his buddies. He has been with me through love and loss. We have been together for over thirty years. He is my confidante, friend and truly the horse of my heart. Who knows, maybe he will teach our future grandchildren to ride.
