Ride times started at 8:00 am and ended at 6:12 pm. Results are posted on our website. STRIDE has successfully just put on the biggest show in our history. A huge Thank You to Show Managers Judy Downer and Liz Long and Show Secretary Jennifer Bravick. Also to Volunteer Coordinator Kathy Smits who managed to recruit 30 volunteers and schedule them all where needed. And of course, Thank YOU so much to all of these volunteers. We had many new riders and new members, we had Snowbird trainers and riders and drivers, we had many new horses (including mine!) and best of all, we had quite a few STRIDE members returning to the show arena after a few years off. How nice to see you all back in the saddle or carriage, trotting down centerline! Results are in this newsletter and posted on our website: STRIDEdressage.org/shows. OMNIBUS CHANGE STRIDE has made one change to our 2017 Omnibus, and that is in the Versatility Division only. A rider or driver who has previously won a Year End Award in Versatility may compete to win again and be eligible with the same horse/pony combination. Please see the Minutes of February Meeting for all the details. MARCH 25 - POKER RUN & MEETING Our next schooling show in 2017 series is not until April 7, so Hellena Smejda and I have planned a fun ride or drive Poker Trail ride and Pot Luck Picnic/General Membership meeting for Saturday, March 25 th at Equestrian Springs, a beautiful property with lots of area, and plenty of places for trailer turn around and parking; thank you Hellena for hosting! Drivers need to depart at 9:30 am and riders start at 10:00. All information and entry form is later in this newsletter. The Pot Luck Spring Picnic will begin at 12:30, so even if you don t join the Poker Ride/Drive, please bring a dish and a chair to join us for social time with horsey friends, and our business meeting for the month of March. DRESSAGE THROUGH THE LEVELS Recently, I attended the Dressage Through the Levels symposium sponsored by the beautiful Dressage Training facility Brec Dressage on NW 100 th Street, with published Dressage clinician Janet Foy. This was the best clinic/symposium I have ever attended, and there were many familiar STRIDE faces there, both riding and in audience. For each level, Training through Grand Prix, two riders demonstrated required movements and Janet directed them in correct execution of these movements with training tips for riders and audience. Then, a third rider did a ride-a-test for that level, and Janet scored out loud, with explanations for the audience. I wish I could show you all the wonderful demo riders and beautiful horses! However, I did take notes, and here I will share many of Janet s very educational comments though the levels. So following, are food for Dressage thought, by Janet Foy: Be prepared, know how to start, know how to finish. Do not lose rhythm in the walk in walk turn on the haunches or walk pirouette. If you make a mistake, or lose one score in a test, don t make a big deal, move on, it is only one score. A very collected canter does not mean a very slow canter. There is a big difference between show riding and training. The show ring is not where you are training. If a horse makes a mistake, do not stop, if you are going forward, you have a chance to correct it. If you don t know what correction to make, don t do anything; stopping does not teach them. Judges should be positive with comments, and realistic with scores. Train extensions by doing lots of transitions, not by just running across the diagonal. A pirouette is 6 to 8 steps, you can count that much! You want to think forward motion and AIR time to develop passage, not collecting up. With shorter rider, not long legs on large horse, move seat down and push tummy out, don t twist shoulders, do nothing except touch with leg. What happens in the rear end comes from the horse s shoulder! We need to get rid of the idea that dressage has to be quiet and perfect.

3 3 STRIDE DRESSAGE INC. NEWSLETTER MARCH PAGE 3 of 19 When training a movement, ask yourself, was this satisfactory, or between satisfactory and very good? If the former, train some more. To answer the question about ear masks: they are now acceptable indoors and outdoors. A good judge thinks, What was the highlight of this test?, so really show off your horse s best movements or gaits. AND my favorite reply of the day, when asked, What does the word Dressage mean? Janet quickly replied, It is French, for afraid to jump! LOL I hope to see you at the Poker Ride or Drive, or bring a dish to share and a chair to the Spring Picnic! We will then organize some volunteers for April 9 th show, and talk about the training demonstration at Sweetwater Farm at our April 19 th meeting. Lonni MINUTES STRIDE GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING FEBRUARY 15, 2017 Submitted by Rita Boehm, Recording Secretary The meeting was called to order at 7:00 by President Lonni Bechen. OLD BUSINESS Recording Secretary s Report: A motion to accept the minutes of the last meeting was made by Charlotte Trentelman, seconded by Loretta Lucas and passed by affirmation of the members. Then Rita Boehm presented a summary of Minutes from Dec. 28 Board Meeting. Treasurer s Report: In Treasurer Lisa Walsh s absence, Karen Kim provided the Treasurer s Report. $ 5, STRIDE $ 8, r program $13, Total Membership and Show Secretary Reports: Jennifer Bravick reported that there are currently 238 members. February 26 th show: Count is not yet final. Currently there are 120 Dressage rides and 45 driven entries. Year End Awards: Lonni expressed her gratitude to all who helped in making the Annual Awards Banquet a success. The decision has been made to hold the 2017 banquet at the same location. NEW BUSINESS Proposals for Changing Versatility Division YEA Criteria: Discussion & comments from the membership were accepted regarding the Year End Award (YEA) criteria for the Versatility Division. After discussion was complete, paper ballots were submitted to attendees to vote on 1 of 4 options. Proposal #3 (no limit on or restriction on winning YEA championship, in Versatility Division only, for 2017 show season) was the majority vote. Results of member balloting were presented to Judy Downer, and passed for 2017 show season, effective immediately. Volunteers: In Kathy Smits absence (since she had to leave early), Lonni announced that volunteers are still needed for Feb. 26 th show. Judy Downer & Liz Long are Show Managers. Members were requested to sign up for either a full day, or a half day, or a half day worked around ride times USDF Convention: Delegates Chris Trentelman and Loretta Lucas, and member Carolyn Hall, reported on and provided comments from the 2016 USDF Convention. Highlights are noted below. Loretta: GMO committee discussed new grants of $1,000 each that will be available to GMOs for educational opportunities. Membership: outreach to Pony Club and eventers to increase USDF membership. There was a GMO Committee Round Table on getting and keeping volunteers in which good ideas were presented on getting volunteers and keeping members happy. Chris: As By-Laws Chairman, Chris reported that dues are being raised in certain categories. USDF is in good financial shape. Carolyn: Attended as a member, not a delegate, and her thoughts are addressed more fully in our

However, she did point out that she enjoyed Dr. Hillary Clayton s session and recommended that anyone who has an opportunity to attend one of Dr. Clayton s talks, do so. Next Meeting: March 25, Saturday. FUN General Membership meeting will be held at Equestrian Springs, 4701 NW 100 th Street (Martin-Anthony Rd), with a Pot Luck Picnic Luncheon at 12:30 pm. (No meeting on Wed. March 15 th ) There will also be a FUN Poker Ride Trail Ride or Drive, with cards for poker hand sealed in envelopes that you pick up along the trail route. Entry $10 per rider/driver, cash or check to STRIDE only, no vouchers because half the money will be for a charitable horse rescue and the other half of money for the winning poker hands, calculated as soon as riders/riders turn them in after ride, and announced during lunch. Drivers must be ready to depart at 9:30 am, riders will depart at 10:00. You must contact Hellena by March 20 th if you are riding or driving, so number of poker hands can be arranged. Hellena at hellenas@mac.com to enter Poker Ride/Drive by March 20 th. yoga for rider s classes at Equestrian Springs. Karen Wohrley announced the purchase of her new horse, Willis. Lonni Bechen announced that she has a new horse, Mosaic, to ride, thanking Charlotte Trentelman for the opportunity. Anne Meinel announced that her driving horse Betty ribboned at Grand Oaks. At 8:12 p.m., a Motion to Adjourn was made by Charlotte Trentelman, seconded by Rita Boehm, and confirmed by affirmation of the members. April 19 th Meeting: Meeting will be held at Carol Rike s Sweetwater Farm, 6700 NW 90 th Ave (a simple turn north off of Hwy 27, or south from SR 326). Bring a chair and a supper dish to share. Dressage educational training demo by David Jay, who is an artist who has made riding an art form as well. He s trained hundreds of horses for piaffe and passage, with his wife Julian riding Grand Prix on her Lipizzaner mare. He has spent many years in the entertainment industry from Hollywood to Medieval Times and is also a master at driving. David will demonstrate how to transform a mediocre trot into a competitive trot with suspension using the Spanish Walk. Talk starts promptly at six at the arena, to allow for maximum use of daylight. Pot luck picnic & General Membership meeting will follow the training demonstration. May Meeting: Lonni requested that someone step up to run the May meeting since she will be out of town. A speaker is also needed for this meeting. Calendar through August: The June meeting will be held at Lonni s home. There is no meeting in July. August 27 th is the date of the Dog Days Show and meeting. Brags: Barbara Brown s grandchildren have won awards in speed skating. Hellena Smejda talked about
