Now is the time not to look back at the should haves and I wish I hads But to move forward together with let s do this or let s try that. We need to get creative wit our membership list. Having lost so many members over the years while many of them still have horses but have chose not to join clubs. We need to find out why? What can we do to change their outlook on being a member of our club. What do they need from us to feel like they belong? You all know people who for one reason or another have walked away. January is our membership drive month Bring them to our meeting on the 21st. Let s do what we can to make our family bigger. The enthusiasm new perspectives bring is energy refueled for many Come and share ideas. Let s do this together!!! Stay Warm.. Stay Healthy Your President, Life is like a Camera. 3 COMBINED DRIVING Types of Combined Driving Events -- from Peter Hance and the Equestrians Institute Introduction to Combined Driving clinic... A Combined Driving Event (CDE) is the full meal deal of combined driving. It is generally a three-day event with dressage on the first day, marathon on the second day, and cones on the third day. At big shows,dressage is sometime run over 2 or more days, and at small shows, dressage and cones may both be held on the first of two days with marathon on the second day. Other variations are also possible. The main distinction of CDEs is that a full marathon (including section A, a walk section, and section B) is included. A Driving Trial (DT) is similar to a CDE but the marathon includes section B only. This is done for reasons of space (there is no room for a section A) or of time. Driving trials are usually two-day events with dressage and cones on the first day and marathon on the second day, but all three events can be held on a single day. An Arena Trial (AT or ADT) is designed to be held (as its name suggests) in an indoor arena. There are dressage tests specifically designed for ATs, the marathon is reduced to driving through 2 obstacles only, and the cones course usually has only 10 gates. The AT dressage tests are adapted to be driven in a smaller space and in a shorter amount of time. The marathon usually consists of two obstacles, which are driven one at a time, two times each. Times are taken for each obstacle drive and totaled up. There is no cross country driving involved. The cones courses are also adapted to fit in an arena and usually consist of 10 gates only. One or more of these sub-events are sometimes set up outdoors if the weather is good. A Combined Test (CT) is made up of two of the three competitions, often Dressage and Cones, and is often offered at a CDE or DT as an option for drivers who do not want to compete in the marathon for some reason. A Driving Derby consists of a short course with 6 to 16 pairs of cones and 2 to 4 marathon-type obstacles, which must be driven in proper sequence and direction. There is no dressage. It is scored on the time taken to drive the course plus any penalties. At this time, there are just two divisions, Training (trot only) and Preliminary (okay to canter). Driving derbies can be run indoors or out and are popular with spectators as well as competitors. January 2017ay 2014 Page 3

4 Meet Sandy Johnson of Alleluia Training Center After a hiatus from training, I am back to what I truly enjoy and excel at. To reintroduce myself to all, here is a little of my history. I grew up showing and training Morgans, with starting my training career as a senior in high school. Then, in 2003, I began training miniatures. Every horse and student that I have trained who competed to the National level, have in the least, placed in the top 10 in every class that they showed in. Several of the youth and amateurs went onto championship titles from Showmanship to Performance. Training of youth and amateurs in conjunction with their horse is a great pleasure to me. It is a wonderful accomplishment to see your students do so well!. Horses are being accepted now for the following disciplines: All divisions of driving - AMHA and AMHR; Hunter and Jumper; Obstacle - Halter and driving; Showmanship, Liberty and Halter. Each year we take items to the homeless, needy and the left behind by society. Items that are needed and often not provided at shelters are shampoo, tooth paste, tooth brushes, combs, lotions, etc. If you would like to donate even partial bottles, they would be appreciated. Please bring them to the next meeting. We also take donations all year long. They can be dropped off at any AMHA or AMHR show at our stalls or where we are camping. He does need finishing in driving. He has a great personality and would be a great youth horse. Only reason that I am parting with Tonka is that I am having health problems and need to cut back on my mini s and ponies.
