10 Wings of Angel an by Kathy Rohlwing Golden Oaks Essay What do you do when the doctors tell you that they don t know if your husband will live or die, or if he will even remember you or the kids. They couldn t tell me if he would be able to function normally again, or need around the clock attention. My world was falling apart around me, so what did I do? I not only rode, but I jumped my beloved horse, Sweet Tommy D. I was practically born on a horse and have owned many. But there was one special horse, Tommy, who came into my life for a very short time. He was sent to help me get through this tragedy. Like most Thoroughbreds, Tommy s first career was as a race horse. As most people know, it can take a lot of training to get an ex-race horse to soften and bend, but he didn t need much help with jumping. He loved to jump and was a perfect mount, always remaining under control and jumping beautifully. I had only had him a couple of months when Stan had his automobile accident. During the twelve weeks that Dan was at the hospital and rehab, I visited him almost daily, while caring for our two children, a house and a 22-stall horse boarding facility. Whenever possible, I would try to steal time away to ride Tommy. One day while I was jumping him on our cross country course, a friend hollered out, What do you think you re doing, we can t have you getting hurt also. My mom, who was watching nearby, said: Don t worry, Tommy will take care of her. She understood the connection that Tommy and I had. She knew that when I was riding, it was Tommy s turn to take care of me, as only he could do. They say that In riding a horse we borrow freedom. That s what I was doing. While I was riding, Tommy let me leave my worries behind, even if only for a little while. I don t know how I would have gotten through that time if I had not had him to lean on. Unfortunately, Tommy died the next summer. I soon realized that he had come into my life for a purpose and it was time for him to go. He will forever be in my heart. He came when I needed him most and left when I was better able to cope with my changing world. Tommy taught me that I didn t always have to be strong and in control. That I could let go of the reins, and allow someone else to take over. He also taught me that my true passion was dressage, not eventing, and that it was time for me to find a horse that could take me on that journey. I have never had a horse, before or since, that made me feel so confident and safe, especially while jumping. He truly had wings...wings of an angel.
