1 WOMEN'S DIVISION NEWSLETTER Late Fall 2018 A Message From Linda Ken-Wo renovations are underway Our 2018 Women s Division activities have officially come to a close, but if you are like me, we will be golfing till the course closes. Thank you to those who attended our Closing activities. Congratulations to all the winners I was debating whether to call Brinks to escort Debbie Sutherland home the complete list of winners appears later in the newsletter. On behalf of your Executive, Thank you to everyone who participated in/contributed to our successful 2018 season to you the members, to our Executive, to the Ken-Wo staff and to the grounds crew. It was a pleasure to be a part of and share with you Ken-Wo s 2018 golf season. We are saying good-bye to a few Executive members: Nikki Dolbaczuk- Past President; Coleen Youden Match Chair; Susan Markham- Starr Publicity; Edna Harquail House. Thank you ladies, you will be missed. We are, however, pleased to welcome new Executive members Gail Hazel Secretary; Patti Sheehy Match Assistant; Joan Merlin Publicity, and Mary Marshall House. We are still looking for a volunteer for the Vice-President position. We lost our BMO sponsorship this year, and this has been a challenge financially, but we as an Executive made the decision not to seek outside sponsorship we felt that we should support our activities from amongst our membership, that we are an economically fortunate group of women, and that we do not want to seek sponsorships from the community that is already inundated with sponsor requests. The Division continues to be one of the most active in the Province and it is due to your participation, commitment and passion for golf. A recap of our activities this season: *Renaming of generic trophies: - Liz Vermeulen Award for 9 hole longest drive. Liz was Women s President ; , Ken- Wo Club President 1996, NS Sr. Team member 1998, Ladies Champion 1989 and much more. - Margaret Townshend Trophy for 18 hole ringer board 2 nd division. Margaret was a Charter Member in Hilda Johnson Cup for 18 hole ringer board 3 rd division. Hilda was a Charter Member in Enid (Tufts) Guest Cup for 9 hole ringer board. Enid was our 1 st Ladies Club Champion in *Instituted a Handicap Policy including Roles & Responsibilities thank you to Cheryl Hawboldt and David Bolton. The updated Policy Manual is now on our website. *Contacted other clubs in NS to get feedback on their programs, then sent a recap of same to each club *Hosted the Worker/Staff Appreciation Luncheon. *Recruited Winnie Horton to plan for

2 *Printed Quick Reference Guides. *Hosted a Rules Clinic/Orientation/and Handicap seminar. *Hosted the Club Championship and undated the binder. *Attempted to host a Home and Home with Avon Valley and also a day competition at Brightwood neither of which drew enough participants from Ken-Wo. *In process of updating Executive Binders. *Participated in Junior/Senior/Women Scramble *Assisted in getting the Tuesday Social Women s group started. *Arranged good-byes for Debbie Barclay and Neta Jollimore. *Hosted the Opening Scramble, Semi-Annual Meeting and Banquet. *Assisted with the Scramble Fore Cancer Care. *Through Ken-Wo purchased a backdrop for our photo-ops. *Planning to revamp Wall of Fame, depending on our bottom line. *Continuing to work on profile sheets for each name on our trophies to post in the locker room. It has been a good experience to be your President the past two years. I was very nervous undertaking this position and my main reason for doing this was because Winnie Horton asked me. I have great respect for Winnie and could not say No. Thank you everyone for your support. Now, please join with me in welcoming your in-coming President, Betty Mattson. Betty you will have my full support. Sincerely, Linda A Message From Betty It is hard to believe, that the 2018 golf season is winding down. It has been a wonderful year, hot on some days with very little inclement weather. I hope that you have had an enjoyable year, meeting new golfers and catching up with old friends. The course has been in great shape with many projects completed and others in progress, which will hopefully help to improve our game. The Thursday women s day has been fun, with many interesting challenges. Thanks to our active Match Committee Coleen, Cathy and Noreen. The quality of our newsletters thanks to Susan Markham- Starr, kept us informed, thus improving communication with our members. She did not miss much! Kudos to Susan! Edna Harquail was always busy planning our opening and closing dinners as well as the club championship dinner. She also ensured our locker room was well stocked. Great job Edna! Thanks to Debbie Boutilier, our treasurer and an expert in mathematics, has provided a financial plan to help us meet our goals. Keep working your magic Deb! Of course, Jane Cayford, Prize Chair, ensured, the hardware was polished and the prizes were ready to present. Great Job! I would be remiss, not to mention the work of your outgoing President Linda Durling. She was focused, extremely energetic, accomplishing the goals for the year. Thanks Linda for your hard work, commitment and dedication! Your work was greatly appreciated! I know I have big shoes to fill! To help me, are the new as well as the experienced executive for 2019 season who have talents to share at the Division table. I am looking forward to working with them and with you, our members, over the months to come. Have a safe winter (oh gosh it is hard to say that word) and see you at our opening in the spring! 3 The Closing Scramble, Business Meeting and Awards The Closing event took place under sunny skies and warm temperatures, with about 60 golfers participating in the Scramble and a few more members joining us for the Annual General Meeting, dinner and the awards presentations. Material for the meeting was distributed before the meeting via . The Scramble s best scoring team was Geri MacKay, Debbie Boutilier and Heather MacKay with a 36. Linda Gordon was closest to the hole on #2 and Kim Graves was closest to the line on #7. Patti Sheehy had the closest guess in the guessing game; and Debbie Bolton won the 50/50 draw. The winners of this season s awards and their photos are shown below. But, among the highlights of the awards were the presentations of three named trophies by the women who are honoured by these trophies.
