Your 2018 Executive is looking forward to helping provide you with an enjoyable and memorable season. We have a full slate of activities planned for you, to take part in, socialize in, compete in, and have FUN in. We have added more prizes for Thursday casual play to reflect the trend of greater 9-Hole player participation. In the spirit of inclusiveness we have scheduled our Club Championship for August 11 th (Saturday) and August 12 th (Sunday) with the hope of encouraging greater participation in this, our premier event. Betty Mattson and I will be co-chairing the event this year. A tip of the golf hat to Patti Stuart Coordinator for New Members; Debbie Sutherland reporting of provincial/national results of our Ken-Wo women; Beth Lloyd Chair of the Scramble Fore Cancer Care (your Division s only fundraising event); and Cheryl Hawboldt Handicap Chairperson. For 2018 your Executive is planning to revamp the Wall of Fame; post information on each of the names on our trophies; name trophies that are generic; make the Quick Reference Guide more readable and available to members; hold a Rules Clinic with Derek MacKinnon and an information session with Dave Bolton, Ken-Wo s new Handicap Chair April 28 th ; and planning a not-to-be-missed Opening on May 3 rd. We would like to get your suggestions of how to use these monies in celebration of this event. Please the Women s Division with your ideas. 1

2 From The Match Committee: This year s Match Committee of Coleen Youden, Cathy Coates and Yvette LeBlanc has planned another fun season for Thursday morning Women s golf. There will be more opportunities to win dining room gift certificates, with some new formats being introduced this year. Throughout the season there will be a number of random draws, as well as opportunities to win, if your score matches the mystery score for the round. On Chip-In Day, everyone who gets one is a winner. On Pin Round days, there will be a prize for low net score for the round (for both 18-hole- and 9-hole players). We want to provide those working women who have not been able to participate in the past, an opportunity to compete in this our premier event. We are hoping that by providing these women, and indeed all Ken-Wo women, with the opportunity to participate on a weekend we will see our numbers grow from previous years. If you have a weekday membership, there will be no extra cost to play in this weekend event. In preparation for our Championship we will be asking players to exchange scorecards and attest same during each of our pin rounds and trophy rounds. We are encouraging our competitive play rounds, and indeed all rounds, to be played in a friendly atmosphere, encouraging helpfulness with the rules and encouraging players both casual and competitive to attend Rules Clinics. Yes, even casual players may like to be informed of the rules. Playing by the rules and knowing the rules benefits EVERYONE. 2

Rules Clinic/Handicap Presentation/Orientation Please pre-register for attendance at the following sessions on Saturday, April 28th at Ken-Wo. Please give you name, address and whether you are a new member or a current member. A mini rulebook will be given to each participant who requires one. If you attend the Rules Clinic at 9:30 am you will need to bring one club, notebook/pen, and dress accordingly. Deadline to register is: Monday, April 23 rd. Please register at KenWoWomen@gmail.com 9:30-10:30 Rules Clinic with Derek MacKinnon - Outdoors or Indoors - will depend on the weather 10:45-11:15 Handicap Presentation by Dave Bolton, Ken-Wo's new Handicap Chair - in an interesting, informative, and easy-to-understand format. David is very qualified for this position and wants to communicate and inform Ken-Wo members on Handicaps and Rules in general. 11:15-11:45 New members and current members Orientation - distribute/review Handbook; Review activities of the Division; Question and Answer session. Note: When you pre-register, please indicate if you will be attending the 9:30; the 10:45; the 11:15 session. 9:15 am yes 10:45 am yes 11:15 am yes We hope you will appreciate having these sessions, especially the Rules Clinic, early in the season. As well, in the past, having the clinic on a Thursday prior to play, some participants had to wait a couple of hours after completion of the clinic prior to their tee time. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity we are offering. Pace of Play A reminder that you are attempting to keep up with the group in front of you don t worry what the group behind you in doing look forward, not backward. Pace of play is a concern of all golfers, no matter where a person plays we want to encourage fun with your fellow playing partners and also encourage making it fun for everyone on the golf course by keeping up. 3

4 Women s Division Opening Please join us for the Women s Division Opening on Thursday, May 3 rd All the details are on the posters at the Club and at the end of this newsletter. The 9 hole Scramble will begin at 1:30pm, followed by social time and the Division s Semi-Annual Meeting at 4pm, and Dinner at 5pm. We expect that you will be home before dark. You can register with Brandy until noon on Monday, April 30 th.. and yes, that is a very large turtle on the course last year as photographed by Sirpa Winslade. We hope that the turtle joins us again in The Scramble for Cancer Care Back in February, when the temperatures were solidly above zero and the ground was bare, your Scramble Fore Cancer Care Committee met and hatched the plans for this year's Women's Golf Tournament. It's hard to believe that in 15 years it has grown into the event we have today. Over the previous years, we have raised slightly more than $100,000. Despite rain & wind, last year's event was the best year yet, raising approx. $13,000. It would be amazing to raise $15,000 in our 15th year! Why not??? Ken-Wo has stepped up and will, again, be sponsoring several items for auctions & draws, plus assisting in many ways to enable us to pull this off on a shoestring budget (zero). Golf Central, Go North/Uncork NS, and Ken-Wo are supplying the Raffle Items. Windsor Home Furniture and MacDonald/Chisholm/Trask will have Hole-in-One events. The "Peelers" will be offered again to legally 'cheat' on shots! There will be several on-course games of chance or skill. Although I can't mention all the sponsors, here is a smattering of the ones who have helped us grow the event: Gates Insurance, FYI Doctors, Acadia Sports Complex, Atlantic PharmaSave, SunDog Sunglasses, Jordan's Home Furnishings, Grand Pre Winery, and many personal donations of items and money from members & guests. A few new faces have taken up the challenge to seek out new avenues for sponsorship, garnering several interesting and valuable items for our Red Cup, Silent, and Spontaneous Auctions. If anyone has ideas for sponsorship or are willing to approach one or two businesses on our behalf, please contact Linda Durling, Ann Young, or me for direction and a copy of our official "Request Letter". Several people are bringing gift baskets or other items, Golf Courses are offering packages, new & past participants are already enthusiastic. The Registration Packets are being constructed - starting with new dukkies for everyone. Invites for the event went out in early March and on March 8th, the final team got in under the wire to fill the field. Presently, we have one team looking for 2 players and one team on the waiting list. With the date set (June 16, 2018), weather ordered (we play in all climes), and Ken-Wo GC plans/people in place, we are a "GO" for the 15th Annual Scramble Fore Cancer Care Charity Golf Tournament!!! Raffle Tickets will go on sale at the Women's Opening. We are requesting that members consider taking a booklet or two to sell to friends. A reminder that ALL donations of cash over $20 will receive tax receipts from the Valley Regional Hospital. Every cent that we raise with this event is used by Dianna Hutt for her clients' needs. We are the major source of funding for this unit so it is critical that we continue to make this a successful FUNdraiser each year! Sincere thanks for everyone's support in the past and future! We are trying to emulate the Men s 9-hole social evening. When? Tuesdays, shotgun start at 5:30pm, registration from 5:00-5:15. Where? Ken-Wo of course! Why?
