Welcome In this edition we are focusing on our Field Officers, with updates on some of the things they have been working on over the summer. This work can include bringing horses in to our Rescue and Rehoming Centres, where they are given the care they need before finding loving new homes. This year s Rehome a Horse Month was a tremendous success, but we need to maintain this momentum, as we always have many horses and ponies looking for new homes. It is clear from the many messages we received this year from current rehomers that not only are these horses enjoying their new lives, but they continue to give great joy to the people who have taken them on. In this edition we have included just some of the fantastic photos our rehomers have sent to us, and hope to share more in the coming months. We are also focusing on horse welfare in sport, and this year we have been working with the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) on their review of the whip, to advise on the implications it has on horse welfare. Since August we have been encouraging you to send Action Cards to your MEPs as part of our campaign to end the long-distance transportation of horses across Europe to slaughter. As we go to print our Campaigns team are in Brussels to press for change, and you can read more on pages We could not continue any of this work without the help of people like you. We hope you will enjoy reading about just some of the ways that our supporters have been raising money for World Horse Welfare this year, and that these stories will inspire you in your fundraising efforts. I wish you and your family a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Roly Owers Chief Executive WELCOME 3

NEWS 4 NEWS Saudi Arabia project starts World Horse Welfare has been called upon for the first time to share its expertise in farriery and hoof care in Saudi Arabia. Starting in October, our farriery trainers Tom Burch and Mark Watson have been invited to share their knowledge and skills with existing farriers, veterinarians and horse trainers in the country. The pair have been asked by the Saudi Ministry of Agriculture to carry out an intensive course called 'Introduction to basic farrier practices' with a group of 12 students. Tom and Mark will conduct lectures, perform demonstrations and provide opportunities for the students to work closely with their horses. The course aims to increase the students' knowledge in subjects such as basic horse anatomy, shoeing faults, conformation, horse handling and body language, as well as foot balance and trimming. It is hoped that the programme will be extended into other areas in the future, as our partnership in Saudi Arabia will continue until December This will create many opportunities for us to share our skills and experience in hoof care with the local people. Farriery Trainer Tom Burch says: We are really pleased to have been asked to assist with the programme. It is rewarding to know that we have been approached for our expert advice and skills and that we will be able to make a positive difference to the horses and their owners. "There are also plans for the partnership to continue for many more years, hopefully providing us with an opportunity to get out into the communities and help the local people and their working horses in the future. Ian Kelly, Director of International Training at World Horse Welfare says: This is the first time that an international horse charity has been invited to Saudi Arabia so we are extremely honoured to be taking part in the programme. This is a fantastic opportunity to educate these students who will then potentially be able to pass on their skills to other horse owners." This is the first time that an international horse charity has been invited to Saudi Arabia so we are extremely honoured to be taking part in the programme. The King Abdul Aziz Arabian horse centre where the programme will take place Record crowds at extravaganza A record number of people attended our annual Summer Extravaganza at Hall Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre on 31st July. The day had a Western theme and around 1,300 visitors came to watch the displays and other activities on offer. Rebecca rehomed Read more La about La our four UK Rescue and Rehoming Centres from Hall in the Farm Farm Round Up, pages... in First ever 'Rehome a Horse Month' a success Our first ever Rehome a Horse Month has been an outstanding success with a record number of horses finding new homes in July. Launched by our President, HRH The Princess Royal, a fantastic 31 horses and ponies in total were rehomed, almost three times more than in July of last year. Our Chief Executive Roly Owers said: We are thrilled with how well Rehome a Horse Month' has been received. I am delighted that so many of our horses are now in loving new homes. Although this campaign has been hugely successful, we still rely upon members of the public to consider rehoming one of our horses at all times throughout the year as our centres are always bursting with a fantastic variety of horses. Read more on page 16. Betfair sponsor World Horse Welfare conference We are delighted to announce that Betfair, the world s leading betting exchange, will be sponsoring our prestigious annual conference. Their decision to become new sponsors for the conference lends further recognition to our unique and central role in protecting horse welfare within racing, and promoting the responsible use of horses across all equestrian sport. Held in November, the conference will be attended by our President HRH The Princess Royal and Hugh Robertson MP, who is Minister for Sport and the Olympics. The conference will consider the role of the Olympic legacy for horse welfare, and features contributions from Sir Mark Prescott and Alastair Down. Martin Cruddace, Legal and Regulatory Affairs Director for Betfair, said: "Our sponsorship of the 2011 World Horse Welfare Conference reflects Betfair s commitment not only to racing, but to the wider equestrian world. Horses continue to play a crucial role in many areas of life and Betfair is thrilled to be able to support the charity s invaluable work and this important event."

Field Officer receives accolade A World Horse Welfare Field Officer has been recognised for his hard work, receiving a top award from the RSPCA. Chris Williamson, who covered the North-West of the country before retiring this summer, was presented with a Certificate of Merit in June at our Penny Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre. RSPCA Inspector Ian Robertson, who has worked in co-operation with Chris for several years, often going out to visit horse owners together, said: "Chris played a fundamental role in creating the vital relationship between World Horse Welfare and the RSPCA. As a Field Officer at World Horse Welfare and an Inspector at the RSPCA we have the same aims: preventing cruelty and promoting kindness, and we work together to achieve that. His knowledge of horses really is second to none, something he s always happy to share with me, my colleagues and horse owners whenever the need arises. Dallas Round up features on TV We hope you enjoyed our feature last issue on our Dallas round-up in the highlands of Scotland. We filmed the operation and this has now been made into a programme for Horse and Country TV. 'Wild Round-Up Rescue' goes behind the scenes at World Horse Welfare as we embarked on the round up, passporting, castration and microchipping of nearly 100 feral ponies in our largest ever preventative welfare operation. 'Wild Round-Up Rescue' premiered on 14th September, with repeats throughout the autumn. Surrey woman banned from keeping horses A woman from Surrey has been banned from keeping equines after two of her horses were found in a poor condition. Yvette Tilly, 39, of William Russell Court, St Johns, Woking pleaded guilty this August at Guildford Magistrates Court to two offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 for causing unnecessary suffering to two geldings. Tilly received a five year ban from keeping equines, was ordered to carry out 100 hours of unpaid work for each offence, to run concurrently, and to pay 500 in costs. Our Field Officer Ted Barnes received a call from a concerned member of the public in March this year about the poor condition of the horses at a location in West Byfleet, Surrey. Accompanied by RSPCA Inspectors Michelle Hare and Liz Wheeler, Ted visited the site on the same day, where they found two horses: Kev, a 25 year old 17.2hh chestnut gelding and Benson, a 15.0hh 17 year old black gelding. Kev had a heavy lice infestation and was very thin and Benson was thin and also suffering with a lice infestation. Kev and Benson were signed over to World Horse Welfare. Ted Barnes said Mrs Tilly has learnt her lesson. Although she showed that she was very much remorseful in court, it is good news that she will not keep equines or work in the equine industry for some time. Community payback helps horses Groups of offenders have been carrying out Community Payback at our Penny Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre near Blackpool. Every Friday since March the offenders, supervised by Lancashire Probation Trust, have been completing tasks such as cutting the grass, painting and repairing fences, mending picnic tables and benches, as well as other general maintenance duties. Community Payback is a sentence given by the courts to offenders, putting them to work in their local areas to make amends for their crimes. Fran Williamson, our Centre Manager at Penny Farm, says: The offenders are always supervised and have been no trouble at all. Although we keep the centre very tidy, there have been plenty of jobs for them to do and they just get on and do it. It s been a great opportunity to work together with the Probation Trust and we hope that the relationship will continue. NEWS 5

Driving abuse off Europe's roads At the time of writing World Horse Welfare is still waiting for the European Commission to release their report on the Regulation governing the transportation of horses to slaughter in Europe. This report, due out in September but delayed until October, may take us a step closer to ending the long-distance transportation of horses across Europe to slaughter. Our Campaigns Advisor Jo White said: "While the decision-makers delay, 80,000 horses every year on average 220 horses each day continue to suffer on needlessly long journeys across Europe to slaughter. For their sake, the Commission must commit themselves in their report to taking action. We are hoping that they will have taken the compelling evidence that we submitted into account and that they will now agree with us that a short, finite journey limit is needed." Visit or turn to page 13 to find out how you can get involved with the campaign. Saddle racks donation helps our horses Two of our farms have benefitted from a very kind donation from long standing supporters Linda and John Gregory. They have donated wooden saddle racks for the tackrooms at both Glenda Spooner and Hall farms, which have now been installed to the delight of farm staff. The couple run a company called Cloakrooms on the Nottingham/Derbyshire border, which makes traditional wooden furnishings. They developed their wooden saddle racks as a kinder alternative to the commonly used metal rack, which can damage saddles. Hall Farm Manager Sue Hodgkins says: "Our International Training projects overseas always show horrific examples of how ill-fitting saddles and tack cause terrible sores and discomfort. What people might be less aware of however is that in the UK, albeit on a much lesser scale, poorly fitting tack can be a real problem for our horses. While you might not see big sores or external damage on your horse, your saddle could be affecting its wellbeing and performance. Even a professionally fitted saddle, once damaged or forced out of shape by being stored unsuitably, can cause your horse discomfort. And if that wasn t incentive enough with saddles easily costing around 1000 these days, do you really want to store it in a way that might damage it? We looked for nearly two years for a suitable rack and it was only Linda and John's design that came up to scratch. We are extremely grateful for their incredibly kind donation which will enable us to The Gregorys with Hall Farm Assistant Manager Justina Smith keep the saddles we use on our horses being rehabilitated and prepared for rehoming in top condition." Linda and John visited Hall Farm in September to see their racks in action, drop off another free-standing rack for the farm tackroom, and to meet some of the horses and ponies their donation will benefit. John said: "Empowered by the knowledge that something as simple as a well-kept saddle can make a difference to a horse s wellbeing, we decided to donate some of our wooden racks to World Horse Welfare first Glenda Spooner Farm and now Hall Farm. From here we would be pleased to help the other farms so we may continue helping World Horse Welfare" Join us at a special art preview NEWS 6 We are very excited to be holding a private, opening night preview of Hubert de Watrigant s art exhibition at the Osborne Studio Gallery, London SW1. Hubert de Watrigant is a distinguished equestrian and sporting artist whose work features within the private collection of Her Majesty The Queen. The event will be held on 9th November from pm on Motcomb Street, and World Horse Welfare will receive a commission from each painting sold on the night. The evening will include an auction with Channel 4 Racing Presenter Nick Luck as auctioneer. There is no charge to attend this evening, but numbers are limited for this private preview so please contact Lara Downes as soon as possible by calling or laradownes@worldhorsewelfare.org

Catching horses that fall through the net This year we helped with two events that targeted the owners of tethered horses in the Harlow area. Over 60 horses were microchipped, wormed and passported at the days, which were held in July and September at Latton Common, Harlow Common and Collins Meadow: three areas where large numbers of horses are tethered. The aim was to help owners meet new DEFRA codes of practice on equine welfare, offering them the chance to purchase horse passports and have their horses wormed and microchipped. Local World Horse Welfare Field Officer Claire Gordon played an integral role at the events, which were set up and run by a collaboration of organisations including the RSPCA, animal health company Merial, the British Horse Society, Harlow Council and Redwings Horse Sanctuary. Claire was on hand at both events to provide support and welfare advice to the horse owners, and was assisted at the September day by our new Field Officer for Suffolk, Essex and Kent, Alana Chapman. The events were an opportunity to inspect the horses and offer general advice, with a vet on hand to address any issues. In July the team saw 36 horses, and in September a further 29 were brought from as far afield as South London, an encouraging sign that word had spread about the benefits of the scheme. Claire said: "With the threat of contagious disease on our horizons it is important to know what and where our UK equine population is. Events like these enable horse owners without passports to register their horses. They then obtain a passport, microchip, veterinary advice, a dose of wormer and the opportunity to sign up to Merial s Smart Worming Programme. These events were a fantastic opportunity for a group of agencies and organisations to work together, and I believe this proactive multi-agency approach will help tackle equine welfare problems before they arise, through education and engagement with those who previously slipped through the net." I believe this proactive multi-agency approach will help tackle equine welfare problems before they arise, through education and engagement with those who previously slipped through the net. RSPCA Inspector Stephen Reeves said: We got a great response. The way the majority of owners tether and look after their horses is acceptable within the Animal Welfare Act, but it is always important to make improvements and that s what we re trying to achieve by being pro-active. Passports and chipping go hand in hand with welfare; they promote responsible ownership. It was a good opportunity to examine the horses properly, with Roxanne the Redwings vet on hand to give advice on any issues that did come up. Equine passports - the facts A passport identifies a horse and to whom it belongs, helping to promote responsible horsemanship. All horse owners are responsible for ensuring that each horse in their care has a valid and up-todate passport. You could be fined up to 5000 if you don t have one. Your passport contains details of your horse s markings, which will help the police with their identification process should your horse go missing. It is illegal to sell, move, export or present a horse for slaughter without a valid passport. They may also be excluded from receiving certain medicines. If you have questions about passports, worming, microchipping or any other horse queries you can call our advice line on NEWS 7

The cards are packed in 10 s with envelopes and cost 7.50 per pack. If you are interested in placing an order please contact Agnes Zauner at Red Dot Design by calling or voiceofracing@red.media.uk.com Changes for Grand National We welcomed the announcement in August of planned changes to the Grand National Course and the consideration of improvements to the care of horses pre- and post-race. We have been working with Aintree Racecourse and the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) on their review of the 2011 John Smith Grand National meeting to help advise on how the risks to horses and their riders can be reduced in this challenging race. Aintree has announced modifications to some of the course fences, which should reduce the risk of horses falling. We also welcome their consideration of procedural changes to pre- and post-race care, including the introduction of a new post-race washdown and cooling area, and indications that the pre-race parade could be shortened or removed entirely in unseasonably warm weather. Our Deputy Chief Executive,Tony Tyler, says: We are pleased that Aintree Racecourse and the BHA have listened to the views of a wide range of stakeholders including welfare charities, and are acting on our advice. We believe that the role horses play in sport can be mutually beneficial, but only if their safety and welfare are given the highest priority. Racing is never risk-free for horse or jockey, but by making these changes, Aintree is demonstrating that they do care about horse welfare and we hope that next year s race will be the safest yet. You can also purchase a range of Christmas cards and other gifts that benefit horses from World Horse Welfare's catalogue or online shop: Johnson ban welcomed In August the British Horseracing Authority announced a consecutive four-year ban from racing for trainer Howard Johnson, who illegally raced one of his top horses eight times after it had undergone de-nerving surgery. The 57 year-old County Durham-based jumps trainer ran the racehorse Striking Article after the horse had undergone a procedure called a palmer neurectomy, which is banned in sport on welfare grounds. This procedure severs the nervous connection in the lower leg and therefore affects the horse's ability to feel pain. Our Chief Executive Roly Owers says: When we use horses in sport, that places a significant burden of responsibility on our shoulders for their welfare, and Howard Johnson simply did not live up to that responsibility. He showed a callous disregard for the well-being of the horse when he made the decision not once but eight times to run Striking Article without any feeling in one of his forefeet. This was a reprehensible act that clearly crossed the line between the acceptable and unacceptable use of horses in sport. How could anyone think it was acceptable to race a horse that was in so much pain it needed a neurectomy? This case should send out a clear message to everyone involved in racing that the welfare of the horse has to come first, not the need to win at any cost.

Appeal a flyaway success - but we need more! Our international training work is all about providing practical welfare solutions, and the fly fringes are a great way of demonstrating to owners that even such a seemingly small and simple step can make a big impact on the wellbeing of the horses they depend upon. NO FLIES On Me! We would like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported the appeal, and also to ask for your help. We want to raise our total from 7,200 to 8,000. If our international training team could take out 250 more fly fringes this year, it would help us spread the impact of our appeal even further. We are absolutely delighted to announce that our Fly Fringe appeal has raised an amazing 7,200 - that s the equivalent of 2,400 fly fringes! The appeal launched in March this year and aimed to offer working horses in Honduras respite from the relentless swarms of biting flies that plague them daily. As well as donating fly fringes for 3, you have also sent us hundreds through the post, and our International Training team have been busy across the summer fitting them on the working horses of Honduras and in other countries where we operate. Karen O Malley, our Deputy Head of International Training, says: "A fly fringe is a really simple solution that can bring instant relief by protecting horses against these insects, which can cause terrible sores around their eyes. Local horse owners have been really happy to receive the fringes, and they have been an invaluable tool in engaging owners with wider issues of horse care. Our international training work is all about providing practical welfare solutions, and the fly fringes are a great way of demonstrating to owners that even such a seemingly small and simple step can make a big impact on the wellbeing of the horses they depend upon." 10 Interview with Roly Owers World Horse Welfare supports the responsible use of horses in sport, working with regulators such as the British Horseracing Authority and the FEI to protect their welfare. Our Chief Executive Roly Owers explains why. SPORTS FEATURE 10 Why does World Horse Welfare support use of horses in sport? Supporting the responsible use of horses in sport goes right to the heart of who we are. Our founder Ada Cole shaped our practical approach to the use of horses. She witnessed horrific suffering on the docks in Antwerp when she saw old and work-worn British horses shuffling off a cargo boat on their painful journey to be pole-axed in a Belgian abattoir. Her approach to changing this was not to push for a ban on using horses as a food animal, but instead to insist that we simply fulfil our responsibility to them by treating them with kindness and compassion, right up until the end of their lives. This practical approach runs through our support for the responsible use of horses in sport and leisure. So long as their welfare is given the highest priority, we believe that the legitimate use of horses in this way is right, and that it benefits horse welfare because of the investment that flows into the horse industry as a result. People exist with horses in a unique and evolving partnership. While the working horse is still globally so important, in developed countries horses have increasingly moved from being used in agriculture, transport and war to being used for leisure and sport. Horses in our society have a role to play, and this role covers a very broad spectrum, from a companion pony to the highest level eventer. We believe that involving horses in sport is mutually beneficial, and over 3 million people take part in an industry that is worth 7 billion in the UK alone. Many of my colleagues at World Horse Welfare are or have been involved in horse sports. Among our own supporters we know that many are regularly involved in a variety of activities with their horses, from local shows to high end competition, and it is of course always fantastic to see horses and ponies rehomed from our Rescue and Rehoming Centres go on to excel in sports. Why is welfare in sport so important? Our partnership with horses, be it working in the fields to help us grow our food or in their evolved role in equestrian sport, places a heavy responsibility on our shoulders to ensure their welfare. And I passionately believe that everyone involved in horse sport has a duty to meet that responsibility. After all, people have a choice to take part in sports, knowing the risks. Horses have far less choice. Any horse sport entails risk for both horse and rider, and while this risk can never be entirely mitigated, it is our responsibility to minimise it. How well is welfare protected in sport? The vast majority of people participating in this huge industry place welfare at the forefront of their activities, but there are inevitably some bad practices. Some examples might be the weight of horses in the show ring, the overuse of the whip in racing and training practices such as rollkur or hyperflexion. In addition, from thoroughbreds to Shetland ponies, one of the biggest problems we face is poor breeding practices. The sport industry understands that wherever we find bad practices, we will challenge them, and I know we have the backing of our supporters on that. In addition, public perception is critical to the future of sport if no one goes to watch the big races, the Olympics, or events, the sport will have no future. Some practices from 30 years ago are no longer acceptable to a public increasingly, and rightly, concerned about horse welfare. We have played a part in bringing sport forward in how it is perceived, acting as a constant voice of reminder to regulators about how much they need to do not only to enact change but explain the steps they are taking.

How does World Horse Welfare protect the welfare of horses in sport? We work to protect these horses in a number of ways, foremost by raising awareness. It is important that we promote welfare in sport and educate people about their responsibility to these animals. World Horse Welfare works constructively with a number of sports regulators. We are the official welfare arm of the Fédération Equestre Intemationale (FEI),were their sole advisor on their code of conduct and were one of the leading voices against the reintroduction of Bute in FEIregulated sports last year. We are also welfare advisors to the British Horseracing Authority and were actively involved in their review of the use of the whip in racing, as well as the BHA and Aintree review of last year s Grand National. The involvement of a welfare charity such as our own adds a wider perspective than the regulators can offer, engaging with the wider issues of welfare and helping them know what to regulate. We know from experience with our founding transportation campaign that we can foster much greater change by working constructively with these organisations rather than taking a combative or ideological approach. Pippa Funnell is a World Horse Welfare Trustee perhaps being a negative issue (failed dope testing, injury) to a force for good with horses that are being treated well performing at their best. Rescue pony Yogi was rehomed from us in He was Reserve Champion at this year's National Carriage Driving Championships at Windsor Great Park What role can the Olympics play in highlighting horse welfare? The Olympics are the summit of horse sport to which everyone aspires, and it will be an opportunity to show off excellence in standards both in athleticism and welfare. We hope that by promoting a greater understanding of the positive welfare provisions in the highest levels of horse sport we will move the perception of welfare as The Olympics is also a huge opportunity for getting people to celebrate and engage with horses. We hope that it can go some way towards reversing long term decline in basic understanding of horses in our country, a trend that is sadly reflected in the deterioration of even the basic equine knowledge of horse owners and carers. What challenges do you face in protecting horse welfare in sport? Welfare is not a black and white situation, and we face a constant challenge to balance enjoyment with the inherent risks to horse and rider. The public outcry at the racing industry this year, particularly over the use of the whip, shows the challenges involved, and while we clearly welcome new whip regulations, for instance, the proof of their effectiveness remains to be seen. There is also a long way to go in ensuring that sports take responsibility for supporting the horses they partner with for the bad as well as the good, by caring for or guaranteeing the welfare of these horses after their career is over. Our expertise in the field of sport horse welfare has been built up over the past 80 years through the collective knowledge and experience of our staff and supporters. Please do continue to engage with us to inform and develop our understanding. 12 Driving abuse off Europe's roads What s happening in Brussels? Exhausted, dehydrated and stressed: this horse had already travelled for at least 24 hours by the time this picture was taken. Soon, he would be reloaded and transported for even longer, crammed into a tiny space, becoming ever more exhausted as he struggled to balance on the moving vehicle. He was just one of 80,000 horses in Europe who suffer this fate every single year. At World Horse Welfare we know that these terrible journeys must be stopped by the introduction of a short, finite journey limit and we re sure that you, and every other horse lover across Europe, feel the same way as we do. We have already seen improvements in the law thanks to our campaigning and the hard work of our supporters. However, the road to changing the law is a long one, and we need to convince decision-makers that there is a strong case for change, by presenting recommendations based on scientific evidence. The end of 2011 is a crucial time in this campaign: you are needed as much as ever to help drive this abuse off Europe s roads. Between now and the end of the year, we ll be working hard in Brussels to make sure that the needs of horses are addressed. There are several important reports due to be published and we need to make sure that our voice is heard. AUGUST -This summer we asked you to lobby your MEP by sending them an Action Card, showing mass support and putting the pressure on before our visit to the European Parliament in October. SEPTEMBER At the time of writing, we are still waiting for the European Commission to publish its report on the current Regulation governing the transportation of horses to slaughter. Due at the end of September, this has now been delayed until October. We hope that it will use the evidence that we have submitted and recommend changes to the law, including short, finite journey limits. OCTOBER We will be visiting the European Parliament in Brussels to encourage MEPs to support our campaign and to handover our latest Dossier of Evidence a comprehensive document detailing the full case for a short, finite journey limit. CAMPAIGNS 12 NOVEMBER We will be following up on both the Commission s report and the Dossier through briefings and meetings and, with your help, making sure that this issue stays on the agenda. DECEMBER Another important report is due this time, it s the European Animal Welfare Strategy. This is the EU s second strategy on animal welfare, and will give a sense of the direction in which animal welfare policy will be taken over the next few years. We want to see transport of horses to slaughter high up on the agenda.

What happens next? The next step on the road to changing the law is for the European Commission to release a proposal for a new Regulation that includes a short, finite journey limit. This proposal will then need to be agreed by the European Commission, the European Parliament, and the governments of each of Europe s 27 Member States before it can become law. We hope that the Commission s report will commit them to making such a proposal but whether it does or not, we will continue to make the case for change until the law finally safeguards horse welfare. Please get involved! Our campaign has had a real impact in Brussels for example, horses must now be transported in individual stalls on long journeys and we couldn t have done it without you. To make sure this continues, we need your help now and we re going to need it again in the future to influence every stage of the law-making process. Changing the law takes a long time, and we need to make sure decision-makers remember just how strongly you feel throughout the whole process. Find out how at: Thousands of you have been downloading and filling out Action Cards to send to MEPs this summer. Quotes from some supporters already involved: "This must be stopped. I have already downloaded and posted off the petition card to our MEP - and I do hope that everyone reading this [Facebook post] will do likewise" Keen campaigner Stevie Keates spreads the word at a local show "Already contacted my MEP's and got some positive replies" "I've sent my [World Horse Welfare] campaign cards to Brussels!! Have you?" CAMPAIGNS 13

In the field Our team of 16 UK Field Officers cover nearly 90,000 square miles. It is the only one of its kind working nationwide and funded solely by supporters donations. We admit around 200 vulnerable horses to our Rescue and Rehoming Centres each year and help many more by tracing owners and advising them on the urgent care their animal needs. The number of calls to our Welfare Hotline is increasing every year, with over 6,000 people calling to report a horse in distress during Below is just a flavour of some of the things our Field Officers have been up to over the Summer. John Burns - "This year I ve seen a rise in the number of horses involved in neglect cases whereas previously it used to be 2 or 3 horses involved in each case, now the numbers are in in the high teens or even twenties." Tony Evans - "This summer was particularly busy due to the hard winter and the slow growth of the spring grass, we saw many equines entering the summer still not carrying enough weight as should be expected." Gus Dowson - "I have been doing regular monitoring of horse sales in my area and in August I attended Lee Fair with the RSPCA which is a large traveller fair near Wakefield. This year I have been getting quite a few calls about tethered horses in York and East Yorkshire areas." Jim Maxwell John Burns Tony Evans Doug Howie John Cunningham Rachael Andrews Gus Dowson David Boyd David Boyd - "In April I attended Court to give evidence against a mother and daughter who had allowed four horses in their care to become very underweight and covered in lice - they received a five-year ban. In June I gave a talk at the Members' Day at Hall Farm for 50 World Horse Welfare members, on the day our President The Princess Royal launched Rehome a Horse Month." Jacko Jackson WELFARE Julia Sly - "I went out to two ponies with the most enormous padded rugs which made them look positively fat, but although there was little grazing there was no hay provided. I met the owner and removed the rugs to find them both very poor. They were fed concentrates, but it s not the first time I have found owners unaware of the need to provide adequate hay if there is no or limited available grazing. Not long after ad lib hay was provided and these two ponies both look great." Phil Jones Jeff Herrington Julia Sly Sally Eyres Nick White Claire Gordon Alana Chapman Jacko Jackson - "I had quite a hectic period in August when I took ten horses in from three different cases in three different counties all in just ten days! These were mainly due to emaciation, and there should be no excuse for this in Summer." Claire Gordon - "On one case this year I was out with an RSPCA Inspector when we were tipped off about a collapsed pony in a field where horses are grazed illegally. He was displaying all the classic symptoms of Grass Sickness. A vet and the police were called and the pony seized to ensure he got the treatment he needed. His owner never came forward. Luckily the pony was successfully nursed through at an RSPCA boarding yard before being declared fit enough to travel to our Glenda Spooner Farm where his rehabilitation continues." 14

Rachel Andrews One of my recent jobs has been working with the National Trust to help a group of Dartmoor ponies that had recently arrived in their care. I was called out by a concerned member of the public to see the ponies in Alderley Edge. The ponies had recently arrived in the field and the caller was extremely concerned about their general condition. On my arrival I found 16 Dartmoor ponies. Their coats were dull and scurfy and they appeared to be suffering from ringworm and associated problems. I made enquiries and discovered how the ponies had arrived. They had originally been destined for a different site with a different owner, but it transpired that the owner was unable to take them. To avoid returning them to Dartmoor, the National Trust took them to graze heathland at Alderley Edge. Their intention had initially been to find a handful of a native breed of pony which are suited to grazing on rough terrain and vegetation, but this herd extended to several more animals than had been planned for. The ponies arrived having just experienced one of the worst winters on record in Dartmoor and they displayed clear signs of this. The ponies were in poor condition Rachel helps administer treatment I went to visit the National Trust wardens who explained they had already established a relationship with their local veterinary practice, Wright and Morten, who had examined the ponies and advised on the best course of action. Equine herpes was diagnosed, which meant that the ponies would need on-going treatment and care. Along with a couple of local volunteers with stock handling experience, I arranged to assist the National Trust wardens with handling and administering treatment to the ponies. We met the vet early the next morning and all the ponies were wormed and given anti-inflammatories and antibiotics. The wardens fed the ponies twice daily, providing pony nuts and ad-lib hay and monitoring them closely, and we assisted them each morning that week to round up the ponies and administer the treatment. The wardens erected a crush where the ponies could be confined and treated in a way that would cause them as little stress as possible, and also greatly reduce the risk of injury to both people and ponies! The vet returned to check the ponies at the end of the week and all had improved in terms of their temperature and respiration rate, although several needed to continue with the treatment. It was decided to separate the poorest of the ponies so that they could be closely monitored and fed separately, whilst the stronger of the herd could be moved to better grazing and a field was set aside for this purpose. I assisted with the transportation of the stronger ponies and we were pleased to see them settle into their new field and grazing happily later that afternoon. The vets have been back out a number of times to check the ponies and have been really pleased with their progress. The poorest of the herd are now unrecognisable, and it has been extremely rewarding for everyone involved to see their improvement over the last few months. The Trust are now hoping to gradually reduce the number of ponies to a maximum of four or five and continue with their care, handling and management. The ponies now If you have concerns for the welfare of a horse you can call our UK Welfare Line today on You can also donate today and help us reach more horses that are injured, neglected or in need of veterinary help. 16 Rehoming month a success We launched our first ever Rehome a Horse Month to celebrate the wide variety of horses and ponies that are given a second chance in life through our rehoming scheme. Throughout the month we highlighted just some of our horses and ponies that are already in new homes being used in wonderful ways, and we hope their stories will be an inspiration to people considering rehoming. Current rehomers have also been sharing their news and photos with us, and it has been fantastic to hear all about how World Horse Welfare horses and ponies, some of which have suffered terribly in the past, are enjoying their new lives in a variety of ways. Below are just some of the many photos we have been sent, and we hope to share more with you soon. Catch up on our playlist of videos now by scanning the symbol with your smart phone or going to and don t forget to check out our Rehomed horses Facebook album. Hermione REHOMING 16 Hermione, a 15.2hh dark bay mare, was rehomed in 2007 from Hall Farm by disabled rider Debbie Rounce. Hermione came to Hall Farm as a two year-old after being found abandoned in poor condition. Hermione and Debbie are going from strength to strength and there has even been some suggestion that the pair could reach a high enough standard to take part in the 2016 Paralympic Games. You voted Debbie and Hermione as your favourite YouTube video from 'Rehome a Horse Month' on our Facebook Poll. If you have rehomed a horse from us we would love to hear your news and see your photos. Please share them with us on Facebook or rehoming@worldhorsewelfare.org

Silky is looking for a youngster handling home after a tragic start in life Silky arrived as a welfare case to our Belwade Farm Rescue and Rehoming Centre, Aberdeenshire, earlier this year with her dam Rona. Both mother and foal were exceptionally underweight, carrying large worm burdens and covered in rainscald and lice. In order to give Rona a chance we started to wean Silky, and Belwade s miniature Shetland Sweep stepped in to keep Silky company during the process. Rona was incredibly weak and, despite eating, seemed to be getting progressively worse. Staff had to take turns through the night to help her get to her feet to keep her from suffering respiratory collapse by lying down for too long, and rub her to keep her circulation going. Sadly, after battling for two weeks, Rona lost the ability to get up even with our help and had to be put to sleep. A post mortem revealed that she only had a small amount of fat around her heart and her arteries were infested with worms that had migrated from her gut. The damage that was done by these parasites had meant that, while she was eating, Rona was starving to death. She was only five years old. Silky however responded to treatment and has spent six months steadily putting on condition. She is now unrecognisable from the poor foal that arrived last winter. Silky is now ready to find a home with an experienced person for youngster handling where she can recover fully from her poor start in life and continue with her education. If you can offer Silky a home you can apply online today at where you can also browse the other horses and ponies we have available for rehoming. S Silky now - ready for rehoming REHOMING 17

Farm news Hall Farm Record crowds at Extravaganza A record number of people attended the annual Summer Extravaganza at Hall Farm in July. Digger Around 1,300 visitors turned out in force to watch the displays and other activities on offer. There were big crowds around the main ring throughout the day as people were excited to see the many displays including: World Horse Welfare's own Shetland Mini Mayhem team, the Household Cavalry (including World Horse Welfare's Digger who was rehomed with the regiment last spring), the Stallions of Substance, The Wideham Farm Equestrian Centre, and Amy Last's Driving Horses. The dog show also proved popular, with 150 entries. We would like to thank Leigh and his team from Wideham Farm Equestrian Centre and Drat Dog Agility for their brilliant displays, and the Household Cavalry for bringing Digger back to the farm to put on a show. We would also like to thank all our specialists who gave up their time to come along and support the event by sponsorship and giving demonstrations throughout the day: John Blake farrier & team, Amy Last equine dentist and friend, Christina and friends from Drat Dog Agility and Andy Williamson and team from Uplands Way Vets. Also our thanks go out to all our wonderful volunteers that gave up their time to help make the day such a success. Penny Farm Penny Farm horses out and about Farm residents have been helping to spread the word about our work. These include Dolly, Starsky, Cagney and Toby who were one of the main attractions at Goosnargh & Longridge Show in July, doing a demonstration in the main ring. Toby had his eye removed this year after coming into Penny Farm as a welfare case, however he quickly recovered and has been backed to become a riding pony. Penny Farm pony Dale also went to Tesco at the end of July - not to shop but to promote the farm and its summer holiday activities! Driving Last issue we wrote about the kind donation of two Shetland pony traps by a local masons group. The team have been putting them to good use breaking some of the ponies to drive (pictured). Art at Penny Farm FARMS Open day follow up Penny Farm's annual Open Day was very well attended despite a rainy start to the day. The Musical ride, based on the Glee theme tune, went very well and all six ponies did us proud. We were really pleased to see Wanda, one of our rehomed horses, come back to do driving display as she is now driving competitively at county level. Wanda was joined by our farm mascot Dale, who has just been broken to drive his Shetland pony trap. The highlight of the day was the display by the Kings Troop RHA, including our very own Penny. Penny Farm is pleased to celebrate its 10th year of working with the Association of Animal Artists. The group of local artists hold lectures and painting sessions at Penny Farm as well as producing artwork of the horses there. They exhibit their work in the farm's coffee shop and pay us commission on any sales, helping to raise funds for our vital work. It has been a very successful relationship and the group has gone from strength to strength, always keeping a keen interest in World Horse Welfare and actively promoting us wherever possible. 18

Belwade Development Clay pigeon shoot huge success Belwade Farm hosted its annual charity Clay Pigeon shoot in September. It was so popular that they ran out of clays and had to make an emergency trip to get more! This year's event raised over 2500 for our work. Work is steaming ahead on the new indoor school and visitor centre, started early this year. The centre is coming along well with most of the outside cladding completed in silver larch. The carpark has its first layer and is looking very smart. In the visitor centre the kitchens have been ordered and the lecture room is almost complete. We are so looking forward to welcoming our supporters to meet the horses in our care, and see the every day life of our Rescue and Rehoming Centre. The outdoor patios are definitely going to be the spot to sit, with excellent views over most of the farm. Glenda Spooner Farm Nasher raising our profile In July a Glenda Spooner pony called Nasher, who is currently undergoing rehabilitation including remedial dental work, represented the farm at the Mid Somerset Riding Club s Terrier Racing evening. All the staff from the yard came along, and once people saw how adorable Nasher was they were happy to fill our collection tins by Guessing the weight of the pony (The prize of a bottle of whisky helped too!) Despite 30 or so yapping, howling dogs around him, Nasher behaved impeccably and is looking forward to his next fundraiser. In total the riding club raised for us. Showcasing our work This September the farm hosted an event to raise awareness of our work and our plans for Glenda Spooner Farm. Better facilities would allow us to take in more horses and also improve the visitor experience, helping us share the vital work we do with the public. Hosted by our Chairman Christopher Hall, guests were given a tour of the farm as well as the opportunity to meet staff and watch horses undergoing rehabilitation. The event was also a chance to promote Chairman's Circle membership. The Chairman's Circle hold a number of exclusive events through the year. This year events have included seeing the Greenwich Olympic stadium under construction and a private tour of Darley's Dalham Hall Stud by Princess Haya of Jordan. Nasher All our farms are open to the public on Wednesdays, weekends and bank holidays. Admission is free. Find out more about how you can visit at FARMS 19

Lesotho research will help us tailor training A PhD student at the Royal Veterinary College has completed an in depth study into issues facing working horse owners in Lesotho as part of a World Horse Welfare scholarship. Melissa Upjohn was awarded the scholarship three years ago, and since then has undertaken a number of investigations in the country, where we run one of our International Training programmes, to compare the findings of two different methods of research. The ultimate goal of this comparison was to discover the best way we can ascertain the needs of working horse owners and address these needs through training, and then evaluate the effectiveness of our training work. Melissa s research concluded that while traditional field research by structured survey enabled us to identify commonly seen problems, the interactive nature of newer participatory methods such as interactive face-to-face discussions with groups of owners allowed us to garner a broader and more detailed understanding of local conditions causing these problems, and how we might help to solve them. At participatory events owners were encouraged to discuss and rank problems relating to horse ownership, and asked how they wanted to take action to address them. All groups were keen to have the opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills, so we developed interactive educational workshops for them using purpose-made learning tools, local feedstuff samples and tailor-made photographic learning aids. Melissa and Peo Ntho, one of World Horse Welfare s local assistant instructors, ran these workshops in April and owners participated enthusiastically. They commented that they had really appreciated they opportunity to talk about so many subjects, and to ask questions of people with technical knowledge and understanding of the issues they face. Karen O Malley, Deputy Head of International Training says: 'The findings of this research will be really important to our future work. Melissa s study makes it clear that gathering information through participatory methods, and using it to create tailor-made workshops based on the specific horse care needs and priorities of a community, is the best way to lay the foundations for encouraging these owners to take responsibility for improving the health and welfare of their animals. Owners rank their horse care priorities We welcome new Director of International as Ian Kelly retires INTERNATIONAL 20 Ian Kelly Director of International Training for World Horse Welfare, Ian Kelly, has retired. Ian had been with World Horse Welfare since 2001 and during these ten years he has been instrumental in transforming our international training work in the developing world. His advances include piloting our shoe-making machine in Senegal, which has allowed students to undergo farriery training in the country and concentrate on honing their skills in dressing feet and fitting shoes correctly. In addition, Ian worked closely with the founders of The Cart Horse Protection Association, an affiliate organisation in South Africa, which is going from strength to strength. Ian also introduced the Hula Cart project to Senegal in response to the prevalent use of unsuitable improvised materials for cart construction. Ian's passion for horse welfare, combined with a renowned love of military-style efficiency, will leave a legacy of improved horse care and welfare in the many countries where he has worked. Liam Maguire joined the charity as Director of International in September. Liam spent his early career as an agricultural engineer working in Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, UK, Yemen and Zanzibar. After completing an MSc in Management for Agricultural Development at Cranfield in 1992, he joined Oxfam as Regional Coordinator for Afghanistan and following a stint at Save the Children as Project Manager and Capacity Building Advisor for Ethiopia and Sudan, he re-joined Oxfam as Country Representative for Pakistan in From 2008 he was Head of Organisational Development at The Brooke. We would like to extend a warm welcome to Liam and wish Ian all the best with his retirement.

Say hello to Rocky Adopt a Horse New adoption horse Rocky A great Christmas Gift To adopt a horse for just 5 a month, please fill out the leaflet included in this issue, visit our website at www. worldhorsewelfare.org/you-help/ adoption or call The teams at each of World Horse Welfare s four Rescue and Rehoming Centres work tirelessly to ensure the horses and ponies that come into our care make the best possible recovery and are found loving new homes. Over time each horse grows and develops, being schooled and learning to mix with other horses and people so each becomes the ideal horse for someone. While not everyone can offer a rehabilitated horse a new home, anyone can help support one of our horses and get a unique insight into the work that the grooms, specialists and centre managers carry out by joining our Adopt a Horse scheme. There are four horses to choose from and in addition to a welcome pack that includes a DVD all about your chosen horse, each member is sent a written update every three months from the groom and centre manager describing how rehabilitation is progressing and the plans for the coming months. In August we said goodbye to Starsky, the adoption horse previously at Penny Farm, when he was successfully rehomed. We now welcome Rocky (pictured above) as the newest addition to the Adopt a Horse scheme. Rocky was found collapsed in a field. He was severely underweight, anaemic and affected by internal parasites as well as lice. He was taken to Penny Farm where he was given a course of antibiotics and many hours of care and attention. Slowly and steadily Rocky has made a full recovery and now he is a confident, energetic youngster who is keen to learn. He has proven more than once that he is full of character and is quickly making friends at Penny Farm. Each horse on the Adopt a Horse scheme has their own story and the updates show how each one requires particular care and attention to make the best possible recovery. Spencer (left) grew up as part of a semi-wild herd and had to compete for every scrap of food he could find. He was in a very frail condition Spencer when a concerned member of the public contacted World Horse Welfare. He was brought to Belwade Farm and after a lot of dedicated care from the grooms and vet has gained weight, strength and confidence. Homer and Zeam are being rehabilitated at our centres in Somerset and Norfolk respectively. Both came to us after caring people reported their concerns to our UK Welfare Hotline and each now leads a much happier and healthier life. The funds raised are invaluable in ensuring that our Rescue and Rehoming Centres can continue to help horses well into the future. Adopting a horse can make a fantastic gift for someone who cares as passionately about horses as you do, and a great way to provide ongoing support for horses in our care. ADOPTION 21

Gifts in Wills We were recently saddened to learn of the death of one of our supporters, Miss Elisabeth Bickford, who died in December Miss Bickford or Aunty Bick as we affectionately referred to her, began supporting our work in 1990 by sponsoring Judy, one of our adoption horses at the time. She had a fondness for heavy horses and would regularly send letters and donations for mints or carrots to Judy, a Clydesdale at our Belwade Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Aboyne, Scotland, as well as supporting our direct mail appeals. Her father had been a Sergeant Major in the Army and her mother was a Scotswoman from Aberdeen. Upon retiring, her father had purchased a farm and in her letters Auntie Bick often referred to Jimmy, a pony who had pulled the family trap on summer evenings and Jessie, a Welsh cob. They also had Prince (a Shire) and Punch (a Suffolk Punch) who did all the heavy work on the farm and loved to roll in the meadow on summer evenings. It used to make me laugh to see them rolling in the grass, legs in the air, she wrote. Miss Bickford continued to sponsor our Belwade Farm adoption horses, eventually adopting Sweep whom she continued to write to until her sad death, always signing herself Auntie Bick. Miss Bickford was an animal lover and generously remembered 19 charities in her Will, of which we were one. Her donations totalled over 25,000 towards our work to give abused and neglected horses a second chance in life. We propose to remember her generosity by placing a bench in her memory alongside the new indoor school and visitor centre complex currently under construction at Belwade. We are deeply grateful to Miss Bickford and to everyone kind enough to remember our work through a gift in their Will. If you would like to leave a gift to World Horse Welfare in your Will please contact us on or info@worldhorsewelfare.org and we will be happy to help you. Read more about adopting one of our horses on page 21. Miss Bickford was a long-time adopter of Sweep pictured here with Polly at Belwade Farm We advise anyone considering making a Will to speak to a Solicitor or another suitably qualified professional.
